Words with Friends: laziest iOS port evar? - EVO 4G General

Srsly, I'm blown away by how rushed and buggy this port seems. It's as if they did the minimum possible to get the thing to "run" on Android.
I've been playing Wordfeud for a long time, and I was excited about finally getting to play a Scrabble-ish game with my friends who have iPhones.
So far I have experienced:
Force closes,
Notifications that it's my turn when it's not,
No notifications when it is my turn,
Random letters showing up on the board that were never played but cannot be removed,
Scores changing randomly,
Games where neither player can play a turn,
Games where I see one score and my opponent sees another,
Having to view multiple ads before I can exit,
and More!
Srsly, wtf. I'm uninstalling this crap. Anyone else have similar problems?

yes all of these ...

A few months for a full iOS port with ads thrown in at the worst parts to make a statement. What did you expect from Zynga?

words with friends blows. seriously.
I get the force closes all the time, I noticed using dev tools that it runs almost constantly even though the person who I downloaded it to play with hasn't played in over a day(meaning I rarely open it). I get the stupid notifications when it isn't my turn.
Wordfeud is sooo much better, way to go zynga!

I had to revert to the old version after updating because every old game I finished and deleted showed back up on the current games list as me waiting for them to play. Then after reverting, it won't stop searching for an opponent. The worst part is its been searching for 2 days and still hasn't found one. So its eating my battery like a fat kid at a buffet. I wouldn't call it the laziest ios port ever though. How much could you really expect from an iPhone app on android? If you take the kid that eats his own boogers and put him in the gifted class, he won't exactly be rackin up the gold stars.

Other applications have made the move much more successfully, i.e. Angry Birds.

That sucks that its not working for u guys. I've been playing it a lot with no problems. At least u didn't pay for it.

When I updated, all of my finished games came back in the "not my turn" section, with no way to delete them. Really poorly done port, very irritated that they rushed this to market just to beat the iOS wordfeud. 20 bucks says the iOS wordfeud is flawless and sadly, nobody will notice because so many are switching to words with friends. I hope the World Wildlife Fund sues them like they did to the World Wrestling Federation for making a thing that can be abbreviated as "WWF."

Wordsmith free is much better, no force closes, and no freaking ads, which it's why I got rid of words with fiends.

What is words with friends? All I hear is people complaining about it.

game doesnt work for me. i don't even use ad free and the opening page has this ad that cannot be displayed so i cant click my games

I only got it because I have some iPhone friends who can't play Wordfued with me. worst part is I finally bought WordFued also, and don't touch it.
I wish WordFued would port to iOS.

ive been playing on my gingerbread Hero and it works perfectly. the only downside to this game is the frustration when u cant think of a word

i just wish there was a ios port all together lol. SO MANY APPS!

I played Words with Friends once right after it came out, and I haven't touched it since. I just got so angry at seeing ads BETWEEN EVERY TURN. Seriously, an ad every 5 turns would have been annoying enough, but EVERY TURN? I was going to try the newest update again, but after reading the comments here, I might just uninstall it.

Same here. This morning was the first time i got a force close..... Wordfued has ads too. Just press home after you play your turn, then you dont even notice the ads, on either app.

Who does this RIGHT after boot?

Seriously, for a tech review site/channel it's incredibly unprofessional. No clue if this is some sort of a joke but he basically says the phone is rubbish and android multitasking is rubbish as it lags. This after good reviews from the same guy not long ago.
Just leave the phone to finish its media scanning and it works fine for me...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAcvIqcpHrI
Wow, I couldn't even finish watching that. That's kind of a huge user fail. Who doesn't wait until a device is all the way done booting?

i would say the only reason it lags like this is because of the media scan that these phones do at the begining.
he's a dumb ass. what a pointless video.
This was an obvious attempt at trying to bash the best phone on the market. Fail Bash is Fail.
What a joke!
The guy runs a Windows Mobile OS site/blog/video channel. Fanboys will diss other products just for the hell of it.
LOL
He has all those apps installed and an other than stock background configured so he has to know how it really operates. Talk about a BS video.
Thats like turning on a computer and trying to play a game right away. You have to let the damn thing finish booting up first. Honestly if he waited a minute then used the phone there would be no slow down.
Obvious bashing is obvious
lolol...what an idiot.
This was obviously a smear campaign.
I think he has a valid point from a user experience perspective. It annoys the heck out of me that the media scanner brings the phone to a grinding halt at start up.

Yea, I get annoyed sometimes with it too. Luckily, in the Froyo update Samsung adds a percentage to it in the notification drawer so you can see how long it'll take instead of just waiting. Not to mention the rotation lock button in the drawer as well.
Just more reasons to be excited about the update and gps fix.
As for the video, I couldn't finish watching it either. It's the most unprofessional and uneducated video I have ever seen from PocketNow. And this is coming from someone that watches PocketNow all the time coming from years of WinMo usage.
I can do the same thing by hammering Win7, WinXP, Win98 et al trying to load up apps, open the clock, WIFI menu. Its the same effect
"APPLICATION NOT RESPONDING" is the biggest notification I get on Win7
I wonder how Windows Phone 7 will fair? I have already posted many critical points but the MS worshippers there must want to burn me at the stake already!
From the guys Twitter posts it looks like he has a small axe to grind against Android
I cannot post his Twitter link directly (Newbie poster) but his user name in Twitter is adamzea

I don't think is point is valid period. On a cold winter night and day, do you start your car and immediately put it in drive/reverse, do you start your computer and right after windows boot up do you start launching programs out the wazoo....I think his whole purpose was to bash Android. There wasn't one valid point throughout that whole review.

[Q] Keyboard Lagginess on display units

I just got home from Best Buy where I played with their Xoom for about 20 minutes. Anytime I tried to use the keyboard (in the browser or just doing the google search on the home page), the keyboard only registered like 1/5 keystrokes I made. The line "just testing out this new xoom" would come out as "j tesgo t ewom" or something like that. I watched as I was typing and it looked like the keys were lighting up. Is this just a bad display unit or does the keyboard really suck this bad?
Let me put it this way, I am typing this on my xoom almost as fast as I can type on a computer. It does get laggy in the browser on more complex sites, but it shouldn't lead to that much mispelling. The keyboard is at least as good as the ipad in terms of speed.

Best Buy has some crappy units on display for some reason. ANGRY BIRDS lagged when I used the one at Best Buy.

The xda forum makes the browser lag like crazy, probably because of all the elements that are on the page at once. Use the xda app instead.
Not sure, but as far as my personal experience goes, every single floor unit of any device I've tried is always slower than the real thing. With the amount of abuse that the devices get, and in the case of Android the people messing with things that they don't know the reason for make everything laggy.
I remember using the Galaxy Tab at a T-mobile kiosk and having it run pretty smooth, then trying one in a Sprint store than absolutely lagged out and crashed several times. It really depends what people have been doing to them.
Let me also +1 the Xoom soft-keyboard- between the responsiveness and accuracy of the touchscreen, the size of the keys, and the medium autocorrect setting, what used to be a chore typing on soft keyboards has now made sending E-mails FAR easier (which my client certainly appreciates, as now I respond to E-mails coming thru in late at night or early AM much faster ).
I found that when I went to bestbuy the display unit was terrible because everyone installed apps and put a ton of widgets on the desktop. When I actually got my own xoom it was perfect and never had any issue browsing or using the keyboard. So I guess the point I am trying to make is that its more what people put on it then the unit itself and when you have tons of people messing with it a lot of things get screwed up.

The unit at the best buy I was at didn't have a google account tied to the device. You couldn't use the market, gmail or any google application. So nobody put extra apps or widgets on there. Maybe they messed with the settings? All I know is the keyboard was horrible. It would enter a couple letters, miss a couple letters. Half way through typing something it would auto-close the keyboard. Something must have been messed up, I guess. Otherwise I assume everybody would be complaining, which they aren't. I just wish I could have tested the device with the keyboard working correctly so I knew what to actual expect since I'm still on the fence between this and the ipad 2.
Sorry but its not the store unit's fault. This is something ive noticed and subsequently been annoyed with using my Xoom. Usually its while im using the keyboard in the browser window. It just cant keep up and misses keystrokes. It wouldnt be so bad if the keystrokes were just behind, but it lags enough where it doesnt even register some keystrokes. but like i said this is mainly in the browser. Plus for the person who mention Angry birds, i noticed this myself. Which is something thats alway bothered me about Non-Apple(dont shoot me im not a fanboy) hardware/software. If there was one thing i never experienced on my iphone/ipad it was subsequent slowdown while using apps and such. Everything was as quick the first time as it was the last time. Slowdown to me is a major nusiance becuase it seems to happen in intervals as apposed to consistantly. i hate that. Sometimes AB is smooth as silk other times its choppy, but i never know why or when.
I have noticed the lag too. Not on all sites but some especially XDA.I have seen many others complain about the same thing in other posts. Obviously an issue that needs to be corrected by Google in an update.
I have yet to see any lag playing Angry Birds.

Interesting since the unit I messed with had a ton of stuff. The only time I have noticed some keyboard lag occasionally was in the web browser when on some intensive websites but other than that seems to be fine. As a note you could try out a different keyboard on it if they actually have a Google account such as swift key and see if that helps. Also id see if you can go to another store such as Verizon and test it out there since normally it works well without lag for me.
That is very strange, I played with my new xoom and it was quick on all apps except for SBM but it makes sense since its not optimized yet but as far as browser and keyboard I haven't experienced any lag yet. Side note Google body was very underwhelming.... more for children then Med students or anything past high school.

I get no lag but I use voice to text a lot and that works great
I thought that I was the only one that noticed a little lag on the keyboard..... nothing I can't handle or that stopped me from buying the Xoom
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
My problems with the keyboard are how it freezes up during a keystroke and the only way to stop it is to turn the Xoom all the way off. It can be a bit laggy, but it seems to depend more on the app being used vs the keyboard its self.

Ya it probably depends on if the app is optimized yet for honeycomb so the keyboard lag issue should be fixed when everything becomes more compatible.

Words with friends

I tried this at the request of my friend and am never touching it again. I am pretty sure it's full of garbage pretending to be scrabble. F Zynga. Damn. Caused lag and has no exit button. Won't close except by force. Bad app. Bad app.
Sent from my armed and operational battle station.
It is pretty horrible that you can only close it by force.
No I will not make out with you.
Caused my phone to lag as well.
A...lot...of apps...have no exit button. Are we using the same Android?
The stock browser, GMail, Google/Amazon app markets, YouTube, and a BUTTload of games all require you to back out, rather than use a distinct exit function.
Words is pretty laggy, and it's not as well rated as Wordfeud, but it's the most used cross-platform Scrabble game in the mobile space, and frankly, if your phone is getting jittery from it, you're doing something else in the background. While it's clunky for me, too, it doesn't bog my entire phone down.
We set a lot of apps up in the background on our phones and have a wonky habit of blaming the most recently installed app for whatever problems we encounter, and the simple reality is that it isn't always just the tylenol causing organ failure when there's the binge drinking you did five minutes earlier.
Just sayin'.
wordsmith
I've been playing wordsmith free with a few of my friends and it hasn't been particularly laggy or spammy, though their server slows down from time to time. It's not in the market at the moment but you can still find it on the Amazon app store.
Yeah I am currently on stock rom and play it daily with no issues at all. I actually never had issues with it bogging down with my phone just had ingame issues before. And correct me if i am wrong but doesn't just hitting the back button out of an app pretty much close it?

You trust zynga to sit in the background and not actively collect data? It didn't ask that permission for nothing. It doesn't close when you back out. It also breaks ad block on custom roms. That's aggressive, in my book for being scrabble.

ive never had a problem. youre probably doing it wrong.
Although you are totally right about the lack of an exit button.
I have been runnig it for a while now, with no lag or lockups or such, and I exit the same way as most of my android apps, by the back button
From what I can tell, the reason it runs in the background is so it can keep checking to see if it is your move yet or not, which may be a battery drain, if you have to worry about that sort of thing
It doesnt break AdFree, as I beleive AdFree has been modified to allow Words with freiends to get ads so wwf will work, after massive requests to AdFree to do so.
AdFree will still block all my other ads, but seems to allow the stuff for WWF through, so the game works

I know how to close an app normally, thanks. You shouldn't have to force apps closed. I can understand with a beginner developer, but this is Zynga. They also have gotten in trouble for looking too far into peoples' info with Farmville. Was just warning people of a possiblity. Didn't know everyone owed their life allegiance to Words With Friends.
Words with Friends does not work well on any overclocking or undervolting kernel on my phone. It is too much crap, Wordfeud is WAY better. Nice, simple and runs on any kernel.
Wordfeud
I tried Words With Friends a few months ago and uninstalled bc I couldn't send pm's nor could I exchange letters. I have had Wordfeud ever since and have had no problems (other than getting my friends to play ).

sluggish secure sites

hi guys, I'm finally Xoom owner as of yesterday, haven't even gotten the thing rooted yet so.....falling way behind. Man, I love this thing though.
So the problem I'm having has been hard to research because I don't know what some of the basic website types are called. The biggest problem is my bank website so sluggish and choppy it's really not useable. Actually though I'm noticing that posting here is causing the same trouble so....what is this dialogue entry, scrolling animated called? Cause if I can't get it to work with this, the enemy is going to pull rank and make me take this back for the laptop she has picked out.
Is there any browser, or add on that will hook me up?
If Pnc's app wasn't so half ass this wouldn't be an issue!

You've got to give the Xoom a real chance. To me, rooting and installing the Tiamat Moray rom, overclocking, installing the overclocked gpu Odachi kernel over it, will fix you up. Also, I find that the alpha Ice Cream Sandwich build by Team Eos (aka Tiamat) is fantastic--fast and smooth as butter. Also, use a launcher like ADW EX, and you'll love using the Xoom. I use Dolphin HD browser and like it better than stock android. Not all apps are optimized for tablets yet, but they are getting there. My Bank of America app works fine.
I am struggling to figure out wtf I was talking about to be honest. I have a newborn and I haven't slept in a few days.
So the type of site in referring to, I am thinking it might be java. basically it's a constant fight to keep the courser where you want it to be. Then it still winds up typing in the middle of some other word. I thought it was just https sites but during this post it realized it was the desktop version of the forum too.
Our laptop has about had it, this thing may have to be a full replacement for a while. The only way to do it banking is through the full version site, their half ass mobile site lacks the functionality......so if we, can't use this for banking I'm going to have to get a laptop. I really like this thing. I'm just hoping there's a way around it that I'm not aware of.
For videos....let's just say hypotheticaly someone for whatever reason would want to go to....oh I dunno, "you corn", a farming site loaded with streaming videos. Let's say that person were to click on a clip starring his favorite farmer, Bella Donna, when my wife is finally out shopping or hair or something.
The only thing that would show would be the first five seconds, then it would stop and say buffering. Eventually the slider would start moving again and your can hear the combine running but the video status frozen.
First of all, congratulations on the baby...been there and it's a tough first few months, so you have my sympathy. Lack of a good night's sleep will wear you down, fast.
I love my Xoom, and for most of my purposes it has replaced my laptop, but Imho, the Xoom is a personal device and it would probably not suffice as the family's sole computer. You can definitely improve the Xoom's performance by rooting and running custom roms/kernels. You can possibly improve your home's internet speed, which will improve your downloads and reduce some of that streamed video buffering. But there is no tablet, not Xoom, not Transformer Prime, not iPad, that has what the comparably priced laptop has. Of course, the Xoom can do things and go places that the laptop can't match, but for your needs, and for peace in your home which you need right now, maybe the laptop is the better choice. I'm sure you'll make whatever is the right decision for you. Good luck with everything.

GS3 vs N4 multitasking

A quick question for you lucky people who have got your N4s:
What's the multitasking like? I'm hoping it must be flawless with 2gigs of RAM?
Can someone who has GTA3 tell me if you can pick up exactly where you left off, if you've gone out of the game to do other things for a while? On my current phone GS3, it has the annoying habit of kicking me back to the beginning of the last mission I started if I leave the game for any reason. Is this a RAM limitation on my phone, or does GTA3 do this on all phones?
EDIT: I should mention I'm using the international GS3 i9300, that only has 1GB RAM.

My biggest problem with my older phones was that they would constantly close out the apps that I needed to stay open like contacts, messaging, phone. It annoyed me that my old clam shell phones would instantly open contacts and my G2 couldn't open then faster than 4 seconds or so. This thing leaves all those open and they all open instantaneously.

Flawless x2. Seriously, apps stay in memory for a considerably greater amount of time than my Atrix 2, and obviously longer than my Captivate. It makes switching to almost anything smooth and snappy.

To be honest with you, multitasking has completely amazed me on the N4. On the Gnex, apps would close right away. With the N4, I go back to the browser at the end of the day, and the page I loaded hours earlier is still in memory In fact, I have yet to see my phone go below 950mb RAM remaining. I really think 2gb was overkill (1.5 would've easily done the job), but hey, I'm not complaining Also, keep in mind that I don't use any widgets at all, and I have very few things running in the background aside from Skype, so others may have a different experience.
Edit: As for GTA, it might be the game doing this. For example, Livingsocial is really annoying like that too. It doesn't matter if you just hit home and come back right away, it'll start from beginning. Yet, World of Goo, a much more demanding app, will come back exactly as I left it even when I leave to browse the internet for a while. Some developers really need to get with the program. I personally don't have GTA, so I couldn't tell you specifically.
Perfect. No other word to describe it. So much so I've noticed the phone stuttering a bit when scrolling (like a TINY bit, much less than any other android phone normally) and out of instinct opened the task killer to find 30+ applications all RUNNING. Including GTA3,

OK, I know its good, but 30 RUNNING? You do realize some stay in the launcher but aren't running, right? So you clicked them and they all didn't need to reload? I find that hard to believe. Someone should do a stress test of how many apps you can open before they need to reload when you go back to them and post it on YouTube
