Hi everybody
I’m super excited about T-mobile's HD2 (US version), this thing is awesome in real, the display is just gorgeous.
I went yesterday to my local T-mobile store to get the device, but it was sold out, and the next batch won’t come until next Wednesday, so I asked the rep some questions, but I’m not really sure about her answers, she might be new…I was hoping you can help me with some of them:
1. I want to the get the device alone, without any plan, and rep said that is possible, even if I don’t get the “Even More Plus” plan…just the phone… all I have to do is pay $449
Was she right?
2. If I bought the device alone, can I still get an unlocking code from them? I read in several places that people can usually do that after 14 days, but the rep said 60 days, and she’s not sure if I can ask for unlocking code if I buy the device without any plan
I’ll continuing my education here in the states, but in the same time, I need something that will work when I go home (Dubai), and we have GSM back there, and since AT&T suck , I guess I have to go with T-mobile..

Today I called Microsoft, Danger, Nvidia, Sharp, and Verizon about the KIN. I wanted to know about the Windows phone 7 merge claim from Microsoft, the rom for the phone, and the lack of support for the tegra apx series. Microsoft told me "I'm going to transfer you to the mobile service center" and after a ring the call ended. Danger's phone number doesn't even work anymore. Nvidia told me they only support the Tegra 2 series. Sharp claims "We do not make the kin here at sharp". While Verizon said they would be happy to release a rom to me as long as I had proper permission from sharp. So my question is... Who the hell wants to take responsibility for this damn device?

Wow, quite a run around - frustrating that they don't want anything to do with this phone. I appreciate what you are doing.
If you aren't fed up yet, try again. Maybe with some "social engineering" Vzw will release the rom. Also, maybe a different sharp office?

Thanks for the update this gives me a little hope of atleast getting a rom from verizon. My phone is currently bricked, but I think that if I was able to get a rom I could flash it and have a working phone again. I will contact verizon with the approach of fixing my phone.

As stated above, a hope of a rom of some kind is a light of "hope" to get it working on our bricked phones and to do something with our cute smartphones. ^^
Can this device work on GSM networks? I am confused as some sites are selling unlocked codes for the Kin Two, to enable GSM functions? If this is true, I'll get one.

Nope. It works on CDMA or kinda networks. Has no SIM either.
Just wandering again... what's the requirement on the stated by verizon: "sharp permission".
Cause if i read right, in other thread attempts, sharp was OK if verizon wanted to give it, and verizon is OK if sharp does...
So.. what's (exactly) needed to make verizon give away a rom?
I've been going into Verizon stores in several cities here in South GA the last few days asking about maybe getting a Kin Twom. (I travel around for work). So far EVERY sales person I talked to has told me that I should not get this phone.... That I will not like it and will want to bring it back within a week because it will stop working! Dang!....I would kind of like to have one! Are they just that bad...."really"?
Just FYI stuff mostly. Also I am a 50 year old man, so they probably think I can't figure out how to turn the thing on....lol
When I emailed Verizon about support for bricked phones, their reply was:
At this time,there are no software updates planned for the Kin Twom. Verizon Wireless does not have any control over the software updates because we are not the developers of this device. We simply offer the wireless service to the device.
All devices have a one year manufacture's warranty. If you experience a manufacture's defect within one year (and the phone does not have physical/liquid damage) Verizon Wireless is happy to replace the device free of charge. The "Updating Modem" screen (which has not been listed as a known issue) should not be a concern. Please remember, thousands and thousands of people have this device and only a small amount of people have reported problems.
dezgrz, maybe Verizon was just telling you what you wanted to hear about being willing to release the ROM if Sharp gives the OK. Nobody wants to own up and take accountability on this phone.

So we have a place for support. Now someone else call and asked about how they restore a bricked phone back to factory functional form and if they can give us the tools to do so. Then ask about releasing the ROM.
Did no one watch XDA developer TV last week. We are suppose to send Motorola a message by not buying or developing for their products so they start playing by the community way. Releasing source code, updating devices that they promised to update, etc. Just saying if we are going to work as a community we should all follow the advice of others that are recommending a complete boycott of said devices. What do you think?

Motorola gave 5 free RAZR M Developer editions to US power-users (including myself and P3Droid).
Motorola has always released their source code for kernels... more timely than some but still could use some upload checkers hehe.
I got jellybean leaks for the RAZR M and RAZR HD.. and hopefully soon for RAZR i.
My bootloader is unlocked...
Boycotting this doesn't make sense. The old Motorola yes. Verizon yes. The new Motorola? Not so much. Every device released since they announced their unlock program has an option to be unlocked, and for Verizon they had to make a separate Developer Edition since they are the bad guys here. If anyone should be boycotted its Verizon for requiring locked bootloaders for retail devices and killing unlimited data.

You can boycott them if you want, but I'll continue to buy Motorola devices. They rival HTC in build quality, and the radios can't be matched. Plus, they actually make form factors that I want. Motorola was the only one to make a portrait QWERTY with decent specs (and they were the first at all, as far as I can remember). That gave me 2 more years before I had to make the switch to a stupid slab. Now, they're the only ones making a small device with high end specs. Samsung's attempt at that, announced on Thursday, is a joke.
If all on xda boycotted Motorola I doubt they would notice? Anyway, no use cutting your nose off to spite your face. I certainly agree that their radios are by far better than their competitors. Now under the wing of Google I'm hoping they have changed. Time will tell!

I watched this video and always figured that the host was more informed of behind the scene information then I was. So now am I to believe that what he says is not based on fact? Does anyone censor these video hosts to make sure what they say is actually based in reality? I always turn to the community here to decide if I should invest in a certain product or app. I read countless user reviews and listen to XDA developer TV to make a final buying decision. I think that people that are more in the public eye as representatives of the community should be accountable for the information the are allowed to share. All the information he gave is public, so he's not any more informed than any of the rest of us. He's only more informed than those who don't follow tech news, and those people don't care and weren't going to boycott anyway. Also, all his information is not completely accurate. The $100 rebate is not only for Verizon customers. The list includes several phones that are not Verizon phones. You can verify that for yourself here.
Ultimately, though, he's not misinformed. Motorola did lock bootloaders, they did push updates to an even later date, and they did cancel the updates for a few phones. He just has a different reaction to the information than I, and many others, do. He believes we should boycott Motorola to get them to change. As somebody who has an avenue to get their opinion out there, of course he's going to put his opinion out there. Personally, I think boycotting Verizon would be a better solution, because it's pretty clear that they are 90% of the problem. The new RAZR M/i and RAZR HD are only locked down on Verizon. In every other country they've been released in, they are unlockable. Motorola really doesn't care if you unlock your bootloader or not, because if you do, they don't have to warranty your phone. Verizon, though, for whatever reason, does seem to care.
The truth is, there will never be a widespread boycott of either Motorola or Verizon for this issue. For a boycott to be effective, you have to have a very large number of people upset about something. The number of people upset about locked bootloaders and a lack of updates is pretty low in the grand scheme of things. Most customers have no idea what a bootloader even is, and couldn't care less if they got an update or not. Then there's the fact that Verizon sells far more than just Motorola devices, so even if every Verizon customer that was pissed about the Motorola devices decided to boycott Verizon, it still wouldn't be a majority of those 100+ million customers.

Now that's some information I can rap my head around. However, let me add one thing that Verizon does seem to care about besides money: They are one of the only service providers I have found that blocks text scam premium service providers. I recently received a text from some supposed event notifications service that I did not solicit. I of course paid no attention to it and deleted the text off my phone. When I was about to pay my bill I noticed an irregularity in the amount. $9.99 charged for a monthly membership fee. After notifying T Mobile of the fraud, they credited my account and told me if I wanted to block such services that I had to pay them $9.99 a month to have that feature. Or I could accept a block on all messages that come through their premium text services for free. I opted for the second and all of my important financial institutions were than blocked as well. After doing research on the web I found millions of cases of this same thing and the only provider not to have any complaints about it was Verizon! I was thinking of switching over to them when my term with T Mobile ends. But now that you have informed me of something else, I guess I'll stay away from them as well. Any other information that you can share would be very much appreciated. I know that we actually vote with our cash so even though it seems like one person is a small amount of revenue that won't be missed, when millions of us make the same decision I believe it does have an impact. Who knows? I guess I'll renew with T Mobile because it seems like no matter which service provider you choose, there always will be some shady business practices going on. Guess you have to choice the least of two evils, kind of like voting for a president. To bad XDA does not have a mobile provider of it's own with it's own devices as well. LOL

Hmm...I didn't know that about T-Mobile's service. I have that block on my account, too, since I got a fraudulent $9.99 charge a couple months ago. I don't really subscribe to texts from many places, but it sucks if I don't have the ability to.

I now receive text from my financial institutions and was given these procedures to follow if I receive anymore unwanted texts. Forward a copy of the offending text to 7726 immediately followed by a blank text to 4647. That will permanently block the text sender and also get them investigated for legitimacy. So I guess it's a slight pain in the ass but I need to receive important information from my bank or credit institutions anytime there is activity so I can verify that it is me making the activity happen and is approved.
So, I've been with Sprint for a while. In the past, they have given me decent customer support, and better service than my husband gets on T-Mobile.So I decided to stick with them instead of going to a discount carrier (like Net10) or T-mobile. And I wanted a one-handed phone. I had planned to get the Galaxy IV mini when it came to Sprint, but when I went to purchase it, I asked whether I could use a different SIM when I travel abroad. The salesperson looked it up, and said "no". Thus, I ended up with a Moto X.
I got it SIM unlocked. Then I had all sorts of flaky problems with it, and ended up having it replaced under warrantee. Sprint wouldn't help me with that, because they wouldn't touch Moto-Maker phones, so I had to deal with Motorola directly. (And not the convenient Sprint shop around the corner from my office. - another reason I have liked Sprint obsolete, no more convenient service.)
So I tried to get the new phone unlocked. PROBLEM! Sprint will only unlock one phone per year per customer. They think they can amke an exception since this is a warrantee replacement.
Never heard back from them.
Called again today to check on the progress. Oops! My request was denied. They have no record of having replaced the phone. Because they freaking refused to... If I FAX them PROOF that Motorola replaced it under warrantee, maybe they will reconsider. And hey, maybe they will even tell me the result of that reconsideration. Or not. I guess I will find out. No, I can't forward the email I got from Motorola. No, they can't send me an email documenting what they want me to do. Apparently, Sprint hasn't entered the email age, and only deals withy phone calls and faxes. Who the #### uses faxes these days?
Wish me luck.
Next phone won't be with Sprint. Sigh. I wish I could pay for decent customer serive without paying for frequent upgrades and stuff. I wish we had a market like in Europe where you buy a phone, and you buy service, and the two aren't intertwined.

Thanks. I will give them a chance to unlock the phone by following the last set of instructions they gave me (dig up all my email from motorola and fax it to them) but if that doesn't work, I will try that. Maybe I'll write anyway to complain about the unfriendly customer service, but it seems premature to write in the middle of a request.
Might seem cheesy, but I've always found emailing [email protected] resolves my issues. You email and they will call you the next day. I believe these folks are about as high as you can go. Plus, once someone calls you, you have a direct number to cal back and deal with only one rep until your issue is resolved..hope this helps a little.

Thanks! That looks like a good next step, if this doesn't work. I found my correspondence from Motorola, and as I remembered, a lot of it is vague "we have mailed your new phone", rather than "we have mailed your warranty replacement", but one of their letters did say

I'm hopeful that will be good enough. Of course, there's nothing to prove that I didn't compose that email myself ("fax us the email" really seems dumb, as a form of "proof") but I also have the letter saying "it's been shipped and the cost was $0" and the FedEx mailing label. Hopefully, that will convince them.
They claim they sent me email when they first denied the unlock request. I never got that email, but I suppose some computer may have thought it was spam and deleted it before I saw it. These things do sometimes happen.
After faxing them a letter detailing the issue, along with 30 pages of correspondence from Motorola, I got a call that they had decided to unlock the phone, eventually followed up with an email stating the phone is now unlocked.
Thank you for your advice and support. It improved my sanity.

My parents had Sprint in the early 2000s and even back then they had horrible customer service. I stick with Verizon their CS is pretty spot on.

Well that sucks, earlier I got in on the Moto X for a penny trial thing, would have been nice to have had this one as an option.
This should have been available from the beginning.
Excited to see this, but it jumps to 499 at checkout and there isn't a 64GB developer edition. It kinda gives me a reason to get a custom one I guess. I'm also under the impression that this means that X+1 is going to take longer to release than I thought or Motorola has a buttload of MotoX shells to get rid of still. I gotta see how much I can sell my Developer edition for and I guess I'll decide to either jump on this or wait for the next one.
Edit. I went back to see if they fixed the checkout and realized that it isn't an error. $449 is for republic wireless. I guess they are subsidizing it slightly.
The Moto design site starts out at $449 for the 64gig version, then the select carrier page bumps you up to $499 for the GSM Unlocked version. What's that about?
It's $50 cheaper for the Republic Wireless version. Same for the 32 and 16GB versions too. It's been that way from the beginning I believe.

From what I have read the T-Mobile version can be rooted just as easily as the GSM Dev Edition. Unlocking the bootloader on the T-Mobile phone voids the warranty, unlike on the GSM Dev Edition. Other carriers may have the X locked down more.

Motomakers are what these are...no? I was sure they can't be unlocked.
And definitely republic wireless can't be.
I'm waiting on the 64GB unlocked GSM version from the 2 week trial. The unlocked gsm is the same as the T-Mobile version and the bootloader can be unlocked.

I mean, it's entirely possible that these trial phones will have their specific IMEI numbers (if you ordered one for the 14 day trial) added to some other entirely different internal blacklist that won't let us unlock them for the trial period, that's my concern.
I fully intend to do everything possible with this phone when I get it - that's what a trial period is for, and when it's shipped back (if it doesn't live up to my expectations) they can easily just reset it in a few minutes time (bootloader locked, restored to factory state, even alter the IMEI and program it with an entirely new one if they want, it's their damned device).
As long as I know it can be rooted and then bootloader unlocked so I can play around with some ROMs, I'm cool with that and could decide to keep it. If not, then I'll just toy with it and send it back - again, it's just a penny so it's not like I'm breaking the bank or anything.

I fully intend to do everything possible with this phone when I get it - that's what a trial period is for, and when it's shipped back (if it doesn't live up to my expectations) they can easily just reset it in a few minutes time (bootloader locked, restored to factory state, even alter the IMEI and program it with an entirely new one if they want, it's their damned device).
As long as I know it can be rooted and then bootloader unlocked so I can play around with some ROMs, I'm cool with that and could decide to keep it. If not, then I'll just toy with it and send it back - again, it's just a penny so it's not like I'm breaking the bank or anything.

They could see you unlocked the bootloader and send it back to you and charge you. If unlocking voids warranty, which it does on anything that's not a dev edition, then it may affect returning it too.
A possibility anyway.

It depends on the carrier.
Verizon and ATT moto makers can't be unlocked. You are right, Replublic Wireless can't be unlocked.
However, Sprint and the "GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile SIM)" variants can be. Some other carriers can too.

If you do anything that voids the warranty while you are "trying it for $.01" they will likely refuse return.
If you are buying a Moto Maker X, unlocking its bootloader DOES void the warranty just by completing the action of requesting the code from Moto. You are submitting unique info to Moto about the phone you are unlocking, so expect they will know you have requested the unlock code.
And as for Moto can"easily" re-lock the bootloader, it depends on if its an eFuse or not. Using mFastboot, we can get the bootloader status to unlock and relock, not LOCK. If its an eFuse, moto likely can't set it back to lock without replacing components.
Can you get a developer edition for a penny? If so you do keep warranty for unlocking. I cannot verify whether or not they will accept the return, for that I would call Motorola and request confirmation in writing that they will accept the return even if you unlock the boot loader. If yes, get it, test it, if you like it send it back and order the Moto Maker one you want.

The "Try Then Buy" FAQ clearly stated that the regular non-Moto Maker version, the Moto Maker version, and the Dev Edition were all supposed to be available for that offer but I tried several times to get the Dev Edition and each time I punched in the promo code they sent me, it wouldn't apply the discount and the price remained $449 and change. After maybe 5 attempts, I decided to contact them using their "instant chat" support and the first time it said I was number 18 in the queue so I waited 14 minutes and when I got to being number 3 in the queue, it kicked me out and said their instant chat support was offline.
I waited a minute, reconnected to the chat support thing and it said I was number 27 with a wait time of 35 minutes so I said the hell with it and just ordered a Moto Maker edition, hence my question(s) above about rooting/unlocking.
For 14 days it's my phone, that's how the deal goes, so I'm going to use it as if it were my actual device, that's the only way I'm going to know if I want to actually keep it - I'll fire off an email to 'em when it arrives to clarify things, but if I do end up rooting it and unlocking the bootloader and then they refuse the return of the phone, well... guess I'll be getting it for free, who knows.

And yes, you will void the warranty.... And therefore probably void your chance to return it.
Remember.....us rooters are a very....very tiny fraction of their customers. They don't think of us when they make deals, or rules or promos.....most will try it, not change a single thing and keep it or return it. Then WE come along, void its warranty and try to return it. Nope....not happening. You own it now. Pay up. Or bye bye imei. And now you own a pretty paperweight.
And.....if moto is smart, which they seem to be, any device on this promo....no matter the carrier....won't be eligible to unlock on their site. Didn't think of that one....did we. I'm betting they won't be eligible to unlock on motos site, not until the deal is done and you keep it. ?

Very valid points KJ. Sad thing is I've had root since day one and I barely use apps that require it anymore. With the recent updates and the ability to disable apps without TiBu my battery life is fine so the only thing I've used root for is kernel tweaks.
Try the phone, if you even remotely like it without root, you'll like it that much more with it.

I'd die without root. Lol. Luckily I research first and would never own a device I can't root.
Yeah, I don't get the attitude about its mine for 14 days. Its yours to TRY they are saying. Taking it apart physically or unlocking boot loaders and messing with the system is not something they will be happy about. They'll just laugh, send it back to you and say congrats on your new purchase. Lol.

I would never own a phone without an unlockable boot loader. Until the Nexus5 all my phones had CM and I bought my phones based on having a stable-ish build. I understand your point.
I think I should teach many of you in here something my father taught me as a kid.
If something isn't yours return it how you found it. If you break it, you replace it.
