From what I have gathered (sources below), the iPad 2 doesn't look to be that good of a match to the XOOM. Here are a few highlights, for those of you (like me) were curious about the competition and/or were looking for confidence in our purchase.
Screen:
XOOM: 10.1 inch, 1280x800 at 150-ppi (720p)
iPad 2: 9.7 inch, 1024x768 at 132-ppi (720p) Note: No retina-display
For 3G Version:
XOOM: Upgradable to 4G (LTE)
iPad 2: Stuck with 3G apparently
Front Camera:
XOOM: 2MP
iPad 2: VGA.. really??
That's just a few specs that caught my eye and made me smile. That's not to say the iPad 2 is a bad choice, hell at approx 8.8mm thin (33% thinner than iPad), to pack all that power into that is impressive to say the least.
While Apple is a solid performer, and their software "works", I'm an Android fan, and am thankful now that I joined the XOOM club. More customizations and such make the OS unique. Despite all the riff-raff going on about the Bugs, issues, and disappointments of the XOOM - most of these will be fixed or improved most likely over time through software updates (Like the OG Droid).
None-the-less, just some more info to keep on top of the recent market of technology.

if you feel like ranting, sharing your sage wisdom, bi&%$ng or anything else about the ipad2, we need only 1 thread for this. this is why i hate the general forum.
I think the title is wrong. Is the Xoom supposed to compete with the iPad?
Without the apps (which I'm now finally realizing is so important) the Xoom will never "beat" the iPad. I've noticed everywhere, in all the reviews, all the people, blah.. that everyone needs apps. Without these apps Android tablets will never be true competitors.
I think..

Yes, but as an early adopter thats to be expected. the iPad didn't launch with 65,000 apps, that was built up over the past year. Time will fix that. Just like Android took over the phone market, it will take over the tablet market. Strength in numbers.
Yeah, the iPad launched with 2000 not 6 like the Xoom.

Yeah but as I recall there were a lot of duplicates, and I really came to dislike the 2x iPhone apps - couldn't wait to get rid of. One thing that I keep coming back to - the big selling point for the iPad was it offered a "new user experience" and even tho I was a longtime Apple hater I ended up getting iPad and had to admit I liked the new experience although I don't like the iTunes tether and got tired of IOS limitations. But nevertheless 15 million people ended up buying into the "experience" and now, for XOOM or any other competitor to succeed they have to offer a better experience. Earlier Android tablets weren't able to but I think the XOOM will.... when it finally gets finished .... and some real apps. But with the I pad 2 released the media hype is focused on it so Google and Adobe better move fast!

I was an early adopter of the first ipad. And it was just as weak with apps. There were almost no quality apps out of those 2000. Atleast there are already a few sweet games that take advantage of the system and plenty more to come. Mix that with the vector graphics of a lot of android apps and it isn't too shabby at all. Atleast we don't have to deal with that "2x" crap with ios.

And the good Apps that the iPad did have on release were $10 on average. Most were 2x of existing Apps = crap.
Give the xoom time to catch up.

After reading this "article" i have lost all interest in Gizmodo for good. I take more care pooping in a toilet then this rush job they call reporting.
The device looks pretty good.. but not sure what value i could have with it when i have my Streak 5.
Who cares..I am coming from a 3GS and I got sick of this control freak whose name's Steve Jobs.
Apple products are very good, fast, polished and very pricey....it is going to take a while for the iPhone users to get their devices jailbroken and unlocked. It is all about rumors when it comes to that, and lots cat and mouse...Apple keeps releasing new updates and the hackers keep trying to jailbreak with no much success in the last few weeks.
I got tired of a very stable system which does not allow you to download any file unless you purchase a downloader and if you download with it you can't move the files around, they have to stay with such app,you can't install any non-crapple store apps.If you want an unlocked iPhone 4 you might want to sell your car too.
Once again the rumors regarding jailbreak/unlock.....you can see all this online too.
I would much rather have more control of my devices, that's why I pay for them.
Wow way to fuel the apple fanboy retards who are continuously lyeing to themselves everyday believing that just because something has an apple logo on it, its better.
I really dislike gizmodo.
Jobs could slap an apple logo onto a piece of sh$t and you know that they would all happily pay almost $800 for it.
The streak 7 is honestly a solid android tablet. It may not be the "best", but atleast its not another $150 big POS that you can buy at walgreens. Lol.
IMO dell gave it a good shot and they should be proud of have made.
Any publicity is good publicity right.
How can you release a 7 incher and stick on the same 800*480 screen as on the 5 incher

I agree - not a good thing. With a ton of tablets coming down the pike, as much as I like my 5" Streak, I can't imagine that the 7" Streak will be that compelling given that screen.
So, what's wrong with the article. I think it's spot-on.
I think the article was well written and bang on point. The Streak 7 was a lazy effort and barely worth releasing.
This has nothing to do with apple.
The Streak 7 is lazy. I would say his points are all well taken.
And the Galaxy Tab is nice. I enjoyed my experiences with it.

Hate on Apple all you want, I do and I've had Android devices since January 2008. Bottom line, the iPad is a far better functioning device than any Android tablet currently available. I really think that Honeycomb and the Motorola Xoom will shift things in Android's favour though

Agreed. I thought the article was thrown togiether in 5 minutes and the video was done in 30 seconds... I don't care if the device sucks... but if your supposed to be reporting on gadgets that will influence people.. you should take the time to go over the pros and cons...
and recommending the galaxy tab really put it over the top. Like you will ever see an update on that device now that the tab 2 has been announced. Most people won't get burned again by samsung after the galaxy s fiasco.

Exactly, the person who made the decision seems to be completely having no sense. Why would I buy a 7" tablet if it has the same resolution as 5" Streak,
which is more portable, and light weight. This product is like a formality for the
7" inch tablet. Dell should just keep 5" inch size, and cut another $50 to get more sales(with new CPU and 4G chip).

Read the rest of the thread or don't bother bro
The review you posted was for the 5" Streak, this thread is discussing the 7" Streak.
The problem with the Gizmodo review, is that its not an actual review. They're using a $450 tablet as canon fodder saying its **** n all, but its only selling for $450 (outright)!
If it was priced sans $750 (outright) onwards like the Xoom and LG tablets are going to be priced, then fine, rip its ass out and fcuk it over.
Dell made it cheap (mind you, its just the screen thats rubbish) and is selling it cheap. There are far worse tablets out there right now around the same price, but with half the goodies of the Streak 7 - So sue Dell if they went for the low end of the scale... Take it or leave it - thats the bottom line...
Ive found most websites for example gizmodo, T3, engadget etc favour Apple products, its something ive come to live with. Softpedia is pretty good.
And another thing, everyone always compares mobile devices to iphones/ipads. A friend recently posted on facebook about the motorola xoom and another person commented 'is it an ipad killer tho'. I was like, why would anything need to kill the ipad?
It really grinds my gears.

Hate on Apple all you want but the iPhone and iPad are both excellent devices.
They have, in the past, favoured Apple because most of their products until very recently have had far better out of the box functionality and let's face it, that's what the vast majority of users want. Until recent times of Froyo and Snapdragons I longed to have my phone be as responsive, and have as fast a browser as the iPhone. The Dream and the iPhone 3G came out around the same time in Aus. My Dream, although I loved Android, was amazingly slow next to the iPhone. Furthermore, reviewers are STILL comparing Android phones to the iPhone and even though it has far inferior hardware, it STILL stacks up. How do you think an out of the box Dream would compare to the Desire? If a reviewer compared the two you would say, "yes the Desire is better, but the Dream is older hardware with older software!" Both of these limitations apply equally to the iPhone, yet for many it was the yardstick for the Desire when it was released.
I've never owned an iPhone, only played with mates, and I've owned Android phones since the Dream. I personally think that the iOS user experience is too limiting for me, that's not to say it's bad. I know some people who have as HTC Desire and have never customised the home screens in any way.
----
This has been another edition of my $0.02
those websites are in the business of page views. And nothing gets page views like apple does.
Like it or not(i usually dont) people want to know how products stack up against their apple equivalent. Apple has had great products.

And without owning any of them and using them for a good 2-3 months, how can you justify yourself?
I own both devices, and after the "honeymoon" period of about a month, they're now sitting in my cupboard and about to hit ebay...
I think if you've never owned an Apple product, but get to use a friends for a few minutes, you do love them. But day in, day out, using Apple devices just makes you dumb, and they get boring very quickly with so many restrictions. To keep it interesting you have to continue to buy more apps because the free ones are just rubbish, or worst case, jailbreak to get the features you really want. But, this is rutt that Apple wants you to get into. Get bored, spend more $$. The iPhone & iPad line is all about the revenue, not about the user experience.
To be honest, I've owned every version of the iPhone since its inception in 2007, and its been the same **** but in a different body since then. There have been no Major leaps in software or tech, and the iPhone has almost always been behind in core features (eg, camera, 3G, etc) when you look at their competitors (except maybe for capacitive screens).
I will admit, where Apple products shine is in the looks. Their devices are top notch build (except for the 3G and 3GS plastic case cracks and yellow LCD screens) - but they look very nice, and feel good in the hand.
Its just a pitty that the rest is just rubbish though.
I'm so thankful for Google and Android. Theres loads of choice. And now the Hardware war is about to begin - the first time Apple will be a spectator watching dual core handsets and brilliant tablets bring fluid gaming and a brilliant user experience to all of us.
Theres my $0.02.
Anyone that is looking to get the XOOM, i just find out today that COSTCO will be carrying them at the cell phone booth. They had the samsung tab for $100 less then everyone else, so might want to check it out if you plan to get one. The email said live displays would start arriving in stores the 22nd, and display banners/signs would start arriving the 24th. It did not say when the units would go on sale or for how much.
No show today
Checked with Costco this am 22nd, and the fellow told me they will not have anything until Thurs.--he knew nothing about price etc.
I doubt it'll be cheaper than verizons on contract price of 600.
even then, people said the apple ipad was to expensive at 499, but the xoom with no flash support(i know yet, but it will, maybe, its motorola who locks there stuff down tight, ask anyone with a Moto X, so who knows. lol) is going for 800?!

Agreed - HTC seems to be pushing too much sense and not really promoting the android aspect of it. Yeah they update their phones relatively timely manner but they're doing with sense what apple did with unix - keeping it limited to only what they want and that's whats irritating.
I think the Flyer would have been nicer with vanilla honeycomb and not all the extra fluff of sense. Its the main reason why Moto, Samsung, AND LG are keeping with the vanilla version - they finally realize they'll get more people on board if they put out a standard tab the way apple did with the ipad
I might get the xoom after it is rooted, and bootloader unlocked, cm8 tab edition ftw
i am loving every aspect of it, but the only thing stopping me is there are no good apps and games for Android. I won't be playing games, but there will be time when i will want to and there are no good games. I can't justify myself spending $800 and not having a Complete product.

About the flyer truth HTC adds a lot stuff to their phones that not a lot people that are into deveplomet (like people at this forum) wants but to the regular consumer it does look really nice, is impresive what they did with android os (not honeycomb ) and is easy to use, plus 7 inch sounds like a good size I didn't get the sansumg tablet cause bad experience with sansumg in the past but anyone with open mind should read this article (link below), and most it to me sounds correct, android seems to be rushing to it just like gingerbread, they said in the past the gingerbread was going to have a better UI but it looks the same to me (just some new stuff here and there ) while HTC have been more advance to what google is doing, we can just put a simple example like facebook integration with HTC is better then google integration (after you download the app) so I have to give it up to HTC for taking a risky approach, and of course google for.bringing android

You obviously haven't played with the iPad enough. Well, lucky for you, I have (I have owned one since its launch). And I'll tell you that the lack of Flash support alone is reason not to get one. That, by itself, makes this tablet inferior to any Android-based one. Trust me on this! You'd be surprised how many sites that you visit rely on Flash.
Also, another thing that really limits the iPad is the fact that apps are not flexible in its code to accurately extrapolate the pixel density, leading you to have iPhone/iPod apps and iPad (HD) apps. Not the case in Android. All apps work in all devices. Regardless of its resolution. This means that all apps in the Android Market are also available to its tablet users. Not the case with the App Store. I'd say about half of the apps on my iPad are iPhone apps that are 2x scaled over, making it painfully pixelated.

I am just going to wait for the $600 WiFi only version. I spoke with mobile guy at Costco and he said there is a WiFi only version in their system that will come out 30 days after the 3G Xoom is released (Feb 24). I have a Costco AMEX card and will just use that as Costco has a better return policy than BB. I also have a BB card that has nothing on it and interest free for 18 months sound good as well. I guess I will cross that bridge when the WiFi only model gets released.
The twitter about the unlocked bootloader totally changed me....now I waiting for the wifi only xoom...if it's available on Costco even the better.

Well they didn't include the iPad 2.. I'm assuming whoever set the poll up had their reasons. But definately Transformer 1 is the best Honeycomb tablet out there for the money and the keyboard-battery dock was an amazing extension to it.
Asus stepped up and brought a new pricing standard to tablets for others to follow which made it a huge hit. Not to mention the price point got so many people involved in the dev scene for it; that alone makes it one of the best for people who love tinkering with Android.
TF is my first and so far only tablet i have got so i can't compare it to others, but still.. i'm definitely voting for it
i saw it in the portal and voted for it. why would someone say gtab10.1 is good? there were no updates

The Transformer is the best don't wast your time with all the rest.
I've owned the ipad 2, viewsonic gtablet, acer iconia, and asus transformer. My vote goes to the transformer.
I've also used the thrive and xoom.
There's just no doubt that the transformer is the best one out there... that is unless you want to live in a walled garden of eden then you should get the ipad 2.

i don't see how ipad is "walled garden od eden"? You did hear about jailbreak?
I still have to see android tablet on which I can type without delays and dropped letters, and to position cursor quickly and precisely right where I want it. Lack of usb charging is a terrible design flaw and the reason I ignored it was because I ran inti article which stated that it would be fixed by bios update, which is even more stupid.
I honestly still don't see single aspect where android beats IOS. This poll shuld be named "best android tablet 2011" or include ipad on it. Until then, I will refrain from voting.

I agree with you partner that is so bias not to in include the ipad, after all it is the best selling tablet of all time. Ios is just like any other os. In order to fully mod and unlock the phone you would need to jailbreak or root your phone. I hate when people say ios is a walled garden every os is. Once you jailbreak ios is just like any android phone that is root. You guys be acting like you just buy an android phone and out of the box you can do whatever the hell you want without root. Plus its easier to jailbreak ios than it is to root an android phone straight up. If android was truly open people would be able to uninstall or at least turn off custom skins that OEM insist on forcing down our throat without any hacking or uninstall carrier apps. Ios doesn't come with none of that bull****. I love android but ios is far more open than you guys think.

The funny thing is most stores, businesses, and websites will categorize tablets as android, hp, xoom, samsung galaxy, etc. But for the iPad 2 it's just the iPad 2. There isn't a tablet section because the iPad 2 is the iPad 2. That is clearly how apple and the rest of the world want to define it.
Voted for the Transformer. Really is the best tablet this year. I have played with the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 in store and a friend who has one. It is stupid fast and when compared to Transformer the specs are better and it runs faster and smoother. But I'm not going to pay an apple price for it. Besides I love the look and feel of the transformer and am so happy they did not try to make their tablet look like apple.
Funny, my fiancee and I were talking about tablets last night and I told her the GT was regarded as the best thing this side of an iPad, since Apple practically owns the market. Maybe I'm not the only one who loves the Transformer, muahuahuahuahauhaa

Wait what? Stupid fast and better specs than transformer? Where you get that? I've spent quite some time playing with it, I don't feel that it is any faster than transformer. And better spec?? as far as I know they are the Exact same spec. Tegra 2, 1 gb ram. what better spec does it have?
Voted it. I really love it and it is amazing, with the keyboard having an extra battery and can be upgraded to ICS.

Hmmm... last I checked there wasn't a pluthera of Roms and Kernels available to IOS devices, nor is IOS updated as often. Why dont you go ahead and overclock an I device... ohh wait you can't, all you can do is trick the device in to not underclocking it. How about Dualbooting with linux? heck, I don't think you can permanately install Linux on an Idevice yet (although they are working on it). Lets talk about true Multitasking or ow about widgets... My point is, Idevices are still very much walled off, even Jailbroken there is little that can be done easily, that can be done on Android. Side loading apps and freedom of files are the key thing I love about android, plug my phone in to my pc and i can pull any file off I want, I can email any file i want from my device, no need for ssh or any crap like that.
Don't get me wrong, IOS is a fine system and for the majority it is perfect, but don't kid yourself thinking that a jail broken Idevice is as open as a rooted android. Honestly I think a jailbroken Idevice = non rooted android, at least as far as permissions are concerned. I recommend Iphones to people all the time, its a great piece of hardware but for someone who really wants to control their devices and the data stored... Android no questions asked.
To each their own though, back when I rocked iphones I use to think that Android wasn't all that grand, but when I got bored of my iphone4 and grab an Infuse4g for ****s and giggles I was instantly hooked to Android. I had Iphone 2g-4 but it felt like i had the same phone for years, just got a little faster every now and then but it was basically the same... I needed a change. Anyways, i'm just thankful we can have these discussions, many out there have far greater concerns than "what is better the apple or the droid"

Yee indeed.good talk buddy. I pad and iPhone are labeled the best due to sales. Which is far from it. Just because the HP touchpad sold completely out, does that mean it's the best or near it? No,hell no. Apple is great system but every year its the same damn thing and millions of dumbasses pour hundreds for a minor upgrade or update lol. Android is where its at

Well with the specs I just heard about it. I assumed it did as well. Maybe they are the same. I think what it really is the reason why some people like it better is because Samsung is well known. Maybe they think paying the premium price makes it better. it's probably the slimness too that attracts people. I am not crazy about the slim trend. If they made the prime without the thinner form it would not bother me. I played with the two at best buy and reset them both. I went on a few sites and did some flash video sites on both. I used the stock browser and the galaxy seemed a little faster. I checked both and they were both updated as well. Try both in the store and see if with the newest update if they are more balanced or if one is a little faster. Even if the galaxy is a little faster I still think the transformer is the better talet and deal. I guess its mostly the tech snobs that drooled over the samsung galaxy 10.1. I used to spend wayyy too much time and too much belief in engadget.
First off, I have an android phone, motorola atria.
I have a 32gb wifi iPad, and a chance to trade it for either an acer a500 or samsung galaxy tab 10.1 4g. It would be a straight trade. Would you do it?
I like the apps for the iPad, and there are great games for it. This is my only major road block right now. Hardware wise, I would trade for either one easily, but it's the software side that's keeping me from the simple trade.
Are there apps for android that are specifically made for tablets like iOS and their "hd" version of apps?
It seems the quality of apps and especially games are better right now for iPad?
Ps. In general I do prefer android, I would never trade my atrix for an iPhone. I'm speaking just tablet wise right now.
An iPad 1? It's a roughly equivalent trade though they might be coming out slightly ahead on a purely dollar perspective. Performance-wise, you may like the faster Android tablets if this not an iPad 2. However, if the software is there for you on the iPad, you could simply look to sell your iPad and pick up a newer iPad later. I would suspect Apple is due for an iPad 3 upgrade in the near future.
There are some apps Google claims as "tablet" in their tablet tab but they appear to just be standard apps a lot of times. Some apps do list themselves as HD, usually suggesting they work well with tabs but I don't know that Android has the same quantity of tab apps that iOS does. Most of the time you're just working with phone apps that also work on a tab. If sales increase on Android tablets, I would expect that to change but it may not be the fastest process, particularly if phone apps are working.
App quality on Android certainly runs the spectrum from really solid to absolute junk. Given Google's app stance, that's just the way things go. Right now, companies looking to sell apps and games still look to iOS first. Even at a lower market percentage, iOS is still more profitable for developers than Android. Android users just seem to be more reluctant to purchase apps where iOS doesn't seem to suffer that same problem - Apple's got them used to opening their wallets wide and frequently That's not to say that there isn't junk on iOS.
Part of the reason for the junk, though, is the way Apple and Google go about allowing publishing. You need to be a subscriber to some annual developer service on Apple to publish. $99 a year, I believe. Not a huge amount but it's a consideration. I don't know that Google has any monetary requirements involved. So Google gets a lot more people wanting to develop for it but they can end up with guys that are just learning Java and scrounged something together that managed to run. On the other hand, you get some great developers that have an easy entry in and can put out brilliant software. There's good and bad that comes with both positions.
As the previous poster said, it depends on if it is an iPad 1 or 2. Just to put things in perspective right now:
In canada, a wifi iPad2 32GB is $619.99, An Iconia A500 32GB can cost as low as $349.99. If you have an iPad2 you are probably better off selling the iPad separately and buying an Iconia. If you are looking at a Galaxy Tab then a straight up trade might not be so bad as they cost more and have more "appeal" than an Acer tab. By appeal I mean resale value of a Galaxy tab is likely higher because of the "Galaxy" name.
As for the software side of things. I have plenty of apps that work great on the tablet. There are some HD versions of apps and the number of tab apps keeps growing. The only issue I have is sometimes trying to find apps for tablets, but the market is slowly getting better at that too.
Regarding apps, you have to consider that android tablets are a year "younger" than ipads. The quantity is not nearly close to the numbers for ipad. The good news is that most of the phone apps will work just fine and with ICS optimizing an app for both small screens and large ones is easier, so ideally developers should make better apps (actually it's easier in HC too, but but there are no HC phones ) . The bad news is that as someone here said android users don't open their wallets as often or as wide as Apple ones, so the development almost always goes with ios in mind and android follows. However this will also change in the future.
I have access to both the A500 and GT 10.1 and samsung beats the iconia only in the battery. The screen is oversaturated (someone may like it that way, I but I hate it), and no USB, they even have the ridiculous apple's connector for charging and connecting to pc.
And one more thing - android developers also have to pay a 25$ one-time fee for registration in the market.

I sold my ipad 1 so I could buy my iconia tab. There is much more I can do with the iconia
Than a ipad. I guess its the freedom android offers that lured me overfrom apple. I like the
Galaxie tab 10 but there is no usb port so the iconia was my choice. Good luck with the deal

From a hardware perspective, the answer is easy--i.e. Android tablets are better. I have recommended iPads and Android tablets to various people. It really boiled down to what they were wanting/needing. iPad has simplicity because you are prevented from doing pretty much anything to the device. I have folks who prefer that. An Android tablet gives a better desktop/laptop experience because you can customize. Software is a biggie. If you have apps you enjoy on the iPad, you need to investigate if they also exist on the Android or if something comparative exists. You mention enjoying games. You'll really like Gamesoft's games. I also like the emulators for Android, which means I can enjoy playing my old NES/SNES/Genesis/etc. games on my tablet.
The iPad 3 will come out (instead of originally coming out this year, rumour has it Apple extended the date to coincide with the iPad anniversary next year). The iPad 3 will more than likely come with a quad core processor. One of the biggest problems with iPads is the lack of connections, so an Android tablet will win in that test. Being able to upgrade your storage is a pretty huge plus. I know iPad has the iCloud. As I tell folks, that is great if you are in an area where you can actually get to the cloud, otherwise it is a huge fail.
One more comment about apps. Yes, iPad has a larger selection, so again do your homework on those iPad apps you use frequently. Yes, there are apps and games that are released specifically for Android tablets versus phones. I liked Adobe offering their support to Android with their Photoshop app. Not only is it available for Android but Adobe released the software for Android before iPad.
Best of luck. Hope some of this is of use.
Keep the iPad.
I figure anybody who bought one, well, they should just live with it.

That's the thing I don't get. Is anyone planning on installing 140,000 apps on they're tab? Most likely there's going to be something that does the exact same thing, or similar, on android if it has any value. My impression is also that android phone apps run better on tabs than iOS on iPad

I have both an A500 and an iPad 2. They are both great in their own way. Some things to note:
Ability to expand the storage on the A500 is nice
The screen dimensions on the A500 are better for movies
It's fun to customize the A500
I continue to have problems with wifi here and there on the A500
The screen on the iPad is nicer
The iPad software is MUCH 'snappier'. I'm amazed how slow the A500 is when I use it.
The big name apps for the iPad are generally better. The developers just seem to concentrate more on that platform. For example, the Twitter app for the iPad is nicer.
That said, running iPhone apps on the iPad sucks. The 'little app in the center of the screen' thing is awful. Resizing the app is even worse.
They are both good for their own reasons. If it helps, I use my iPad more than my A500.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 equalizes the screens (better screen than the A500 IMO). I would lean that way if the ability to expand storage isn't an issue.

I like the fact I can run my 2.5" HDD on my Iconia A501, Makes watching movies, moving files a whole lot easier than having to connect to a pc, use all the inner storage and not be able to expand... I also have a 32Gb sd card for all the "must have" shows I like to watch.... That gives me 64Gb storage... Include the 1 Tb drive I attach, take that Ipad....
Oh, and the other thing I found, having a friend with an Ipad, he wanted to download a game I showed him on my android device. It actually cost him to buy the app that Android was giving away for free... The fact I can load apps from elsewhere other than downloading off the market is also a big plus (its nice to keep a copy of the apk files elsewhere)... Something else to think about.
hmmmmm i still think my Xoom is very relevant and will better suit me for what i use a tablet for. heck my first gen kindle fire is still relevant (for me anyways)
what are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that comparing the too is like comparing oranges and carrots. The only thing they have in common is the color orange (they're both tablets).
They are damn near 2 generations apart tech wise and 2 completely different form factors.
exactly, thats what i meant, no need to get something new like the ipad mini (or any ipad) when my xoom still fits the bill. apple has always innovated, now with the mini, they are trying to get in on the smaller tablet market that Google and Amazon have already taken the lead in

Honestly it sounds like you just want to chat about how Apple is bad and the Xoom is still a masterpiece (its not - its quite outdated). Apple is still quite relevant to the mobile market (phones and tablets). They make solid products with good hardware, have fantastic marketing, provide options and on the tablet front, are destroying Android in terms of app support (the OS, IMO, is **** compared to Jellybean). Regardless, they're not going anywhere, no matter how hard you pray.
I love my Xoom but it is far far out of date. I can't wait to see the Nexus 10 and may very well upgrade to that.

So now I need to be an Apple user in order to have an unbiased opinion? Please tell me where I downgraded Android wrongly rather than just shrugging it off. Android tablet app support is atrocious. Its getting better and its nice that Android apps "scale" upward but in doing so, a lot of the screen real estate of a tablet is simply not used efficiently. You can compare it to mobile websites. Have you ever looked at a mobile website on a desktop? They look horrible because they're not using the screen real estate efficiently. With all that said, the user interface of the OS itself and the features and speed have finally surpassed that of iOS.
And yes, the Xoom in the tech world of tablets is very out of date. Hardware tech moves fast; its still relevant and useful but the Tegra 2 processor is simply not up to par with newer chips. One of the main Eos devs even said in their nightly thread that the Xoom is old (coming up on 2 years) and people should start looking to upgrade. It was a bit of an off hand comment (as in I don't think they plan on dropping support any time soon) but people were discussing speed and such and the simple fact is the Xoom's hardware is holding it back from taking full advantage of Jellybean (its fast but not nearly as fast as a Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 7 with Project Butter).
Back to my original point, as I stated, comparing the Xoom and Mini is silly and to me comes across as nothing more than a fishing attempt to bash on Apple and circle jerk about the Xoom with other Xoom owners. They are two products that simply don't compare well to one another. A proper comparison would be the Nexus 7 and the Mini; they are much closer in release dates and are actually of similar sizes and targeted at similar customers.

People that want a smaller tablet and are already invested in the iOS arena or simply prefer it? Tablets that are 9.6" or 10.1" aren't for everyone, just as phones that are 4.7" aren't for everyone. I know quite a few iPhone users who never got iPads because they saw the device as too large and cumbersome. The Mini introduces another option for iOS users at a different price and size.
I've cleaned this thread.
Please be civil and respectful of each other. Thanks.

great point, open source has always been better at providing better and faster support to products which make them more reliable and longer lasting. look how many old PCs are running linux
on the flip side, proprietary software like drivers from nvidia (on my LG phone) take forever to get updates. LG/Nvidia and T-Mobile have only just recently upgraded my phone to GB 2.3.4 (back in March) where as my Xoom is running the latest JB
I think that apple products are great! They give people who are new to the computer world a chance to learn hope to use a computer...
That being said anything beyond being new to computers in respect to acceptable customer support, software support, getting the most out of your device, power, and topping on the cake ethical business operation, you don't find it in apple.
I won't go to far into detail and try not to hate on apple to much, but I think that if you want a device that actually allows you to fully use the hardware then you have to look elsewhere. I also think that you pay far to much money for devices in that brand since they already get their hardware cheap as hell. sure they build solid hardware, but its not always high end, nor is it reasonably priced.
I bought a laptop from an off brand that was twice the power of the average apple computer today and half the price. I received it a year ago.
Ok enough with apple. Sorry that organization irritates me.
So on the xoom. I bought mine fairly recently. Some of the things I love about it is that it's build Pretty solid. I feel like I could throw this thing at a friggin wall! People claim the hardware is outdated, I don't agree. My xoom has EOS Wingray 153 currently and doesn't have any issues at all with lag. The only problems I've had with running apps is that I can't find enough that I want to use. That is to say ones relevant for me to use. I have about 64GB to fill and not enough apps to fill it with
Now this isn't as if I'm saying there aren't enough apps made for android to be honest I think there are plenty. I like that you don't need to use a ca authority to make an app attachable to the store, and I like that they don't pull root apps from the market. I also haven't heard of people being sued for hacking android devices.
I haven't been able to take full advantage of my xoom hardware yet, though it's mostly due to a lack of trying. I mostly use it for a few games and internet use when I'm not home. I also do ebooks and PDFs as well as ssh and some research. To say the xoom is outdated is in my opinion grossly wrong. The software that does a pretty damn good job of efficiently using the hardware, and I've yet to see an app thus far have trouble functioning properly or have any sort of lag. Well I did once, but that could have been so to a new build I literally just installed it also could have just been the app. In any case I no longer have lag.
To close to the question of iPad mini vs xoom. If you have a reason to use something smaller than a xoom then by all means support a terrible organization, but otherwise I think the xoom will be good for me for another year.

I hate Apple's policies for market share! But over hating their policies I hate those iSheeps who keeps saying that their iPoops of them is better than Android, which was com proved by Geekbench that it's the opposite! For all those saying that Xoom is better than any Apple device, it's a lie, BUT even with it's 2 y.o. hardware it's only worse than the new iPhone 5, which is worse to GNote 10.1, GNote 2 and GS3! And there's still missing the new devices that'll come now, like RAZR HD, HTC One X+, Xperia T, etc... And on the iPad mini topic, all I can say is that it's not worth in ANY F-Word WAY! N7 is the best 7" tablet you'll see, Xoom 2 ME is way better too! But I else think that's not fair compare a 7" tablet to a 10" one, they were built for different functions and there's no way you can be fair to both sides when comparing utility, for example: I have my Xoom, which is amazing, and today I used a little my mom's Xoom 2 ME tablet, and it was way better to read than my 10.1" screen! That's why I'm keeping my Xoom and getting a Nexus 7, as I don't need another high end 10" tablet for now and need a tablet for better mobility.
