hello
i am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
after installing "no signal alert" from the market.
i found my signal would drop anywhere from 4secs-30+secs and come back every minute or so it would repeat this randomly as far as i can tell. it seems to be the cause of my high battery drain.
i have a strong -63dbm reception here.
so i have been changing radios to see if i can notice a difference,
however i am confused as to if the type of kernel would react differently with the radios? does the kernel tell the radio what to do, or does the kernel just react on what the radio is saying?
i hope this question makes sense to someone else
i just edited my sig,
but i am trying to run
[02.MAR.2011][CWM]TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 v2.4.5[GRI40/2.3.3/RC1+][A2SD/RAM][tytung r6]
i have also tried different kernels before trying to change radios and they all seemed to have a similar result
sounds like youre having the same problem i was having. im also running Typhoon with the tytung r6 kernel and 2.15 radio. try what i posted in this link... it gave me almost perfect reception everywhere and dropped my time withot signal from 76% to 4%

thanks
i did see that post, i didnt want to sacrifice using 2g speed as i use data a lot,
but maybe thats what ill try just to have a decent battery.
so i have noticed some things and wanted any input as to what could be the problem?
When in an area with 3g the phone will loose signal and do this constant data loss/reconnect as mentioned above
however when in an area where 3g isnt avialable and im using edge network i dont seem to have any problem with data loss and my problem goes away. this is the same when i am on wifi
i did a logcat where i have good signal (but i dont have a copy of it at the moment) and the problem is occuring, i cant remeber exactly what it said
but something to the sort of
"phonydialer....... rmnet=0 ...=null.......disconnect"
i know thats a awfull description and i hope to post a logcat of it tomorrow.
can anyone tell me how things work as far as radio and kernels and 3g data and maybe what area i could research to narrow down to possible be the cause?
the radio is probably switching between hsdpa and regular 3g, each time it does so it disconnects and reconnects, with the radio on full power, hence teh signal drop and battery use. (At least this was my conclusions on a winmo rom, i assume the radio works the same regardless of the OS)
I turned off hsdpa (again this was on winmo) and i still got 3g, but never H, and teh signal became much mroe stable.
also, i noticed this behavour was far more pronounced in the later radios, 2.14 and .15.
Im now using 2.11.50 with typhoon and all seems well.
man i see talk about this everywhere and ive tried a few times to bring it up to some devs who always shoot down the idea that theres an issue.. but i have a theory.. does anyone have these issues on roms that use ppp and not rmnet? cause i remember that the only way that cotulla was able to get rmnet working on android with magldr was by inserting a chunk of code form the desires radio into magldr to enable rmnet to work, i wonder what the chances are that just maybe, that little bit of code doesnt work 100% stable and causes signal and data issues... hmmm?
It seems to be a common thing amongst all roms ( i dont know about ones that use ppp and not rmnet, which in theory would bypass the rmnet code inserted into magldr) so anyone think there might be the possibility of something going on with that?

this seems to be the cause of signal loss/ reconnect
anyone have any more input?

the problem i have, is that my phone loses signal every once in a while. I get between 4 and 0 signal bars, changing all the time, while I sit still in the living room So often I have no reception for text messages or calls.
it seems that winmo uses so much CPU power for certain background tasks, that the signal quality suffers, or even loses signal. When starting a call, or sending an sms, the signal bars drop like led.
what can I can do? getting desperate here... I even tried holding the phone upside down, thus not touching the antenna. Pharaday effect is known, but phone quality is only marginally better outside. Tried all radios on the forum, and several different flavours ROM, including a stock one
is there a software tool, that displays exact radio signal strength, instead of the bars on top?

i have very bad signal if i sit or stand under or next to METAL roof around my house, but i have a very good signal outside my house. Sometimes i am not able to receive a call when making a call from home phone. Since you have all radios in here, i don't know which radio to suggest. FYI, I am using 2.08.50.08_2 radio and it gives me better signal.

that's Pharaday's Cage effect. that is not what I have. HD2 cpu power is having an effect on the radio signal strength (bg processes probably)
If other people with non-HD2 phones have the same problems, the problem may not be your HD2, but consider you have weak signal strength from your provider. This happened in my previous appartment where I had to stay in the kitchen if I wanted to make a phone call.
What radio ROM do you use ? I had some problems too in the past. Now with radio ROM 2.10.50.26 I don't have these problems anymore.
But in the meanwhile I never went back to a stock ROM either so my next question is : what ROM do you use ? I don't have any of these problems with Laurentius26 or CleanEX ROMs since I use the 2.10.50.26 radio ROM.

hej, 2.10.50.26 was the last one I used, when i decided to go "back" to the official ROM in Denmark and that one came with radio 2.06.51.07.
I used primarily Miri's ROM, but I switched to Artemis (did of course a task29 after the stock ROM); Artemis tests on radio 2.06 instead of 2.10. My theory was/is that a windows ROM should fit with radio ROM. But so far, not noticeably better.
REQ: still looking for a tool that monitors (and logs?) signal strength, so I do some tests. anyone?
I just found this post by tokolosh in an EnergROM thead
Q: Which is the best Radio to use with EnergyRoms ...... ?
A: There is no "Best" Radio, they seem to be Location and Preference dependant. Some have better Recetion but poor battery life and vicaversa. Try out the "big 4" to see which works best for you (2.(07/08/09/10).50.xx_xx) just make sure it is a 50 and not a 51 version --> example 2.07.50.xx is good but 2.07.51.xx is not

Anyone smarter than me who can explain WHY the 51 is not good? (googled for answer but no luck...)
Hi,
I've found the same behavior across several different ROMs on different phones, one of them completely factory fresh and recent. I was lucky to record /proc/kmsg dump before the beginning of this behavior, and see it starting.
It looks like mmc0 stops getting correct data - at some point every transaction attempted results in CRC error, and kmsg is full of those errors. The phone during that time appears unresponsive - screen dimmed but not completely off, or soft buttons lit but screen doesn't appear, or when it appears - it doesn't react to touch.
Turning WiFi off and on after it happens seems to cure it.
Now, if I'm not mistaken, mmc0 is the SDIO interface to WiFi card. I see that "card0001 is attached" on it when WiFi is toggled on, and removed when WiFi is off. I believe that it's a dedicated interface and nothing else is connected to it. Kernel devs - can you confirm?
kmsg dump:
http://pastebin.com/zrDzNRUc
Starts looking weird at line 100:
<3>[ 1728.086883] msm_pm_wait_state(2, 0, 0, 0) failed 11001
Then at line 156 bad things start happening:
<4>[ 2736.639434] dhdsdio_checkdied: msgtrace address : 0x00000000
From this point, it goes down the drain until WiFi is turned off and back on (and the log ends on it).
So what I'd like to do, is to find the reason for this happening, and possibly make a simple workaround - I'd prevent WiFi turning off and on over a hung phone. Anyone with kernel / driver knowledge cares to assist? I'm not much of SW developer, but I know my HW.
I wasn't sure whether to post it here or in Development. It's not a Q&A thread, and I'm not asking for confirmations/opinions, unless people are rooted (that's a requirement to be able to dump kmsg), have enough knowledge and are willing to assist with gathering data / solving the problem.
Thanks.
Bump.
In the meantime, I'll try to change a kernel on stock FRG83 to see if it helps.
Seeing this as well. Hope you get to the bottom of it.
I believe many people started seeing it with FRG83. It might not only be affected by WiFi, but also Bluetooth - they're using the same SDIO path to the same BCM4329 controller, using the same MMC0 controller for access.
Since it was always present, but got worse with FRG83 - I believe it might be a race condition somewhere in the code.
I am using a tmobile hd2 running nand, i followed all the directions to install the radio, which is Radio Leo 2.15.50.14, HARDSPL 2.08, and MAGLDR 1.13. I have tried multiple roms and everything works like it should, except i will lose a signal completely. Sometimes it comes back right away, or after a couple minutes or at the extreme i have to restart my phone.
What i dont understand is that this is my second hd2 since my first one got stolen, and i am running into the same problem. I have tmobile and i have pretty good service, so when my phone doesnt act up the signal strength is full bars, but it will still fade out like that.
This is what you need to do
task 29, reinstall clk/magldr ( i prefer clk, makes it more native android since it boots straight into android.) and than instead of radio 2.15, use 2.12 radio. and then flash rom. i havent experienced data drops, and its fast, and the battery life is super amazing. you wont look back
good luck!
Well i have mostly good reception but when im at my house i lose connection all the time, but when i switch to only 2g i dont have the problem at all. Try it.
well here is my update, i have tried multiple radios, task 29's and stuff, and i have yet to find a radio that gives me a stable connection. i have tried the 2.15, 2.14, and 2.12 and none of them have worked. my network type is set to 3g preferred. i live in central minnesota in the usa with tmobile and should have good signal, so i dont know what is wrong.
I've been having the same issue ever since I started using my HD2 a few days ago with AmeriCan build, 2.15.50.14, HARDSPL 2.08, and MAGLDR 1.13
not sure if this will work for everyone and so far it has been a couple of days and i have not have any drops and the signal stays at full bars, but here is what i did:
settings-network settings-network operators and then i selected t-mobile and a popup appeared saying "registered on network"
After i did that my signal became stable. i just kind of stumbled across this when i was looking through the settings >.<
I remember reading about a hardware fault that caused horrible connections , i had it bookmarked but i effed up my HD partitions and lost everything . Its a siimple fix , it has to do with the pins connecting the antenna .
Hi,
i am facing the same issues... Signal drops from time to time and signal strength is generally worse even in big cities.
Sometime after a phone call the signal drops completely for a few seconds...
@elesbb: Could you please lookup that hardware fault.. mabye an issue, that is easily fixable....
Thanx,
Nils

Just wondering if the appearance of the cell network signal is normal (shows its like half full)
I've flashed a few different radios and none seem to get the signal higher than what looks likes about 50% (as measured by the graphic)
Is this just how the graphic appears?
i can't link because i'm new but the picture is at
dl.dropbox.com/u/9195034/signal.png
Are you losing signal or having reception problems?
Be careful flashing radios too often. A bad flash equals a bricked phone.

Same issue. I use WiFi so much I hadn't noticed it. I am able to get full WiFi bars though. Maybe the software isn't coding to report a high signal even when it's available? I'll have to test this again while standing/driving next to a cell tower.
If the signal is reporting the same at all times no matter what, it's probably b/c he forgot to add a line to the build.prop
I spotted this in zips' older builds and he fixed it when I told him what it was and what he needed to do

Care to share with the rest of the class what this line is?

I have the same issue. Im guessing its because the build isnt finished yet. Also, do any of you have the wifi calling feature on this rom? When i first got the phone, i can use the wifi calling whenever I am not in range of a signal or something, like in my basement, but now that i flashed my phone I dont have it, and i dont know where to get it from.
Any help would be appreciated
edit system/build.prop and add
ro.telephony.ril.v3=signalstrength
reboot and done

I'm right now on LiGuxV4.1 and was having trouble with battery life, the users mentioned to reduce the screen brightness but that did not help much. So, I started looking at logcat and I'd like to know if the following could be of any concern,
At every regular interval (2 Mins), I see,
D/AK8975 ( 116): Compass Start
D/AK8975 ( 116): Compass CLOSE
Is that for Location or Google Now or anything that could be eating battery ?
Also, when I try to access audio files, I see,
W/WVMExtractor( 112): Failed to open libwvm.so
D/Ringtone(13775): Successfully created local player
Should this be corrected?
Please help me with these as well as anything that can help me with better battery life.
Since its a ported ROM there must be a file/sensor running that's draining the battery.
