I stay in the Vibrant section, but was hoping others could help the cause.
I generally remain calm and try and remain upbeat and defend... but the news (rumor/leak) about Samsung holding off the froyo release to sell more phones set me over the edge.
While nothing is confirmed, I still believe Samsung needs to be aware of just how pissed they are making our community. I'm not talking stupid class action, blah blah... I simply want our voice heard, and for a Froyo release to happen ASAP... but beyond that, I want them to adhere to the Open Handset Alliance and release their source for our developers.
http://www.openhandsetalliance.com/
I believe we all now who is going to put out a better product, and right now they (our developers) are handicapped because they do not have everything they need.
That said, we need to be organized!
We need twitter to trend.
To do that, we all need to use the same #hashtag. We also need to threaten something that means something to them... the whole problem is they are not updating to help with their sales (allegedly). Well, we need to threaten to never buy Samsung again.
Please use this #Hashtag:
#NeverAgain
would work.... it is easy to use, short and to the point.
An example: (just copy/paste this if you like)
[email protected] I will never buy a Samsung product after the way you've treated your customers. #NeverAgain

Haha. Did you see they just said they plan on selling 60 million handsets in 2011? I had to tweet back to them myself on that one. I said good luck since about 50% of power users won't ever buy another samsung after the failures with the Galaxy S.
Thanks for the crosspost from the vibrant forum, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, so I hope the mods don't remove it.
I set up a twitter account just to complain to Samsung. They should be embarrassed over this. They and Sprint should fire all their devs and hire the folks here. It's ridiculous what is accomplished here by the developers working without full resources or a paycheck compared to what Samsung gets accomplished. It's amateur hour over there.
Tweeted!!! I'm with this movement all the way. Never again will I buy another Samsung phone.
Done and done. Thanks for getting this movement started, power to the people!

Thanks man, I felt bad because I did it and THEN thought to myself, shoot... this breaks an XDA rule. I hope that XDA will have a bit of leniency for this isolated event. That said, I certainly would understand if they did close it... sad but I did break a rule.
Our developers need their source!
I also want to add GalaxySSupport to complain to on twitter. It is the support twitter feed for all of the US Galaxy S variants.

I tweeted them my 2 cents. Thanks for this. I hope alot of people actually jump on it. Not that it's likely to do anything. Still worth a try though!
That being said, it's pretty sad, because the epic has tons of promise. Oh well.

Don't be so sure of that. A smaller website maybe, but one like xda that reaches so many people, its possible to scare them enough to believe we can effect their sales. Its energy better spent than posting over and over speculating about froyo so it also serves a two fold purpose. Overall I'm behind this.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Done as well.
Man, i hope that rumor isn't true..
Did my part. I hope Samsung listens. They make great phones but need to step away from using an open source platform to maximize how much money they coul make by leaving their existing phone users to die.
I agree with everyone that says the hardware is great, but I just can't stand the fact that Samsung is so slow to update to froyo even after all the complaints. There isn't any sort of support for this phone. Also, the fact they can't promise 2.3 (Gingerbread), as LG has done on the Optimus, even though they were able to put 2.3 on a Nexus S which basically has the same hardware is ridiculous.
You can tell me that I should just root and stop whining but that doesn't solve the problem. It's the principle. I feel like people are just sitting back and saying that the corporations will do what they want to do, which is to look only at short term profits (based on the article on AndroidSpin). If we can affect their bottom line through bad reviews of their products and petitions such as this one I'm sure they'll listen.
Also, if we just sit back and do nothing they'll just do it again and again. The reason for the "whining" is not for the sake of just whining, I just personally want to have the best android platform we can get.
In addition, isn't it just easier for everyone (rooted and not rooted) if we got the upgrade from Samsung directly? So why not try to make our lives easier.
That's why I'm all for this. Just my two cents.
Also, I would suggest people write poor reviews on places like CNET where less "techy" people might read reviews on cellphones before making purchases.
dont think this is going to work because with twitter they haev the same canned response everytime its mentioned , someone needs to reach the higher ups like super management somehow. let them know how unhappy everyone is
Whuts do we need to post on Samsung site? I honestly post sumthing to them daily about dropping the ball on froyo n galaxy
They responded to me w the bull ish Re they sent to everybody about froyo due to the complexity whutever lol

Done and done.
I wish HTC had invented the super amoled and bought intrinsity instead of samsung. After hearing about all these "new" galaxys s phones being released I can only hope that if and when the froyo source is released it will give devs the code they need for porting 2.3 and beyond. I hope people realize they shouldn't buy these phones and the new galaxy s sales plummet to hell.
I don't use twitter, so I can't post but I do hope this movement is successful in getting samsung to wake up.
I just posted a "tip" link to the Vibrant article on Engadget. The whole Galaxy S Froyo update has been a running joke there, so hopefully they will pick up on this latest news.

Why make another thread for this ? It's already in the "Android 2.3 any info?" post.. It's XDA Forum here, not Twitter, we don't need zillion of posts about 2.3 status.
very good!!!!!
I think they testing on their own i9000 because mine still got 2.2 froyo wich is also not official rom because no foryo yet released for pakistan
samsung is extremely lazy in releasing updates, so relax and go to sleep !
Haven't they been 'testing' for months....
Useless!!
I was personally told they were testing 2.3 before froyo was even released for the sgs.
Come upgrade day, not sure I will stick with Samsung, I love my sgs but the updates and software coding they do to their own android versions, really does suck.

While i agree with the Samsung bashing about software quality and other updates.
Is there any real benefit to roms on other devices. I know of cyanogen name miui. But at the end of the day there ain't too much of a benefit over what we already have.
At the end of the day what Samsung may lack in software they made up for in the hardware on our devices.
Everybody here will have done their research before buying the device, it weren't hard to work out Samsung were still getting to grips with android.
Im sure in time they will mature and make very good software, but this will take time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Totally agree man, the SGS was my first android, and also my first Samsung and I have been with them ever since. I have bought a nexus S the day it came out. Samsung hardware is great but they seemed to be overwhelmed with the different models and such. And with the SGS2 coming out soon, I am not sure about 2.3 for us. However that is why XDA is so important for us.
Rome might not be built in a day, but ROMs can be

While I appreciate the fine work done on the xda ROM's, I would much rather like the official ROM that has undergone a lot of testing and has the backing of the manufacturer. Since Samsung has not given any indication of its commitment to a phone beyond a few months, the Galaxy S would probably be the last Samsung product that I buy.

This might come as a shock, but it's one thing to ship a customised ROM with plenty of upgrade issues (etc).
It's a total other for a major company to do so. I know the guys at XDA make ROM development seem easy, but the reality is, that's because Samsung has already done most the work for them.. Lets be realistic, any ROM out there in the community which isn't a slightly modified Samsung ROM, is extremely buggy still.. Furthermore, Samsung needs to consider the various rebranded models, etc.

Bro, have you tried CM7? It's fricken amazing.
A lot of folks here on XDA are (almost) as talented, or even more so, than half the clowns working at Samsung. I'm sure they learn a thing or two from around here.
Only reason the Nexus S is so good is because Google did all the development.
Yes, Samsung has eventually shipped very nice & fast 2.2.1 ROMs. But how long did it take, and how long will it take for Gingerbread?
I'm placing my faith in CM7 which will continue to improve.

Unfortunately that is also my point of view and I cannot spend my hard earned money to a company that cannot commit itself to it's costumers. Probably the Galaxy S will be the last phone from Samsung that I buy.
On a side note, I'm looking forward for the Nokia / Microsoft partnership. I played with a WP7 this days and I got very surprise by the build quality and software.

I'm afraid this post is pure tripe!
CM7 is nowhere near stable yet; not even all the "advertised" features work! I'm not bashing them, because they know there's still bugs, but just think for a minute.... how vocal would you be, in a very demeaning manner, if Samsung had put out CM7 as it stands now?
As for Google "doing all the development [on Nexus S] - I think you'll find that they only did (at most) 50%. Most, if not all, the initial hardware driver support, which is the KEY to making Android work on any device, will have been done by Samsung, as it's them who has the knowledge, skills & facilities to make the phone. Once you've got the hardware drivers / abstraction layer; its very easy to put any OS you want on top! (do you really, really think there's a huge hardware difference between Samsung's Bada, Android, WP7 & even Symbian phones?)
Now, I'm not saying Samsung are the best at delivering updates, but they're better than some *cough* Motorola *cough* and their hardware is still the pinnacle of what's available. And yes, there's a few talented people on XDA, but there's also a hell of a lot more who muddy the waters and generally add to the nonsense going round by wrongly accusing Samsung / XDA devs / polar bears of X, Y, & Z.
Some of you have to take a good look into all that is "technology" and the likes...Most likely, once a device is out, YOU WILL NOT GET MAJOR UPDATES besides bug correction. And this is valid for every company.
Consider yourself lucky to get major release like 2.2 or 2.3, most of the others makers (HTC, Sony, Motorola) are still on 2.1.
Take a good look there and see by yourself:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Android_devices
Most of the devices don't even have 2.2.1 and the only one with 2.3 is still Nexus S.
WP7 had a long run before releasing the first bug correction (not even sure if it's out yet...)
Even worst, iOs users have to PAY for their release
So, you can complain all you want but reality is far from what you are thinking...
Now, as for 2.3, it's supposed to be optimised for SGS hardware (because of the Nexus S), can't wait to see how it goes!
theres a good chance we will get 2.3 because galaxy s phone are still being sold and the 4g ones
I sincerely hope samsung is gonna surprise us one of these days (even then probably later rather than sooner), since 2.3 is finally optimized for the hummingbird aswell... Also the screen shutdown animation kicks ass.
On another note: Samsung should really communicate better, and ffs train your customer support. I tried to poke for some information earlier this week, and I got a response saying: Samsung is not responsible for the updates, please contact the responsible party, in this case "Android".
Testing ! In galaxy S2 v2.3 ... S3 v2.4
Galaxy S 16Gb Int
CM7 Honeycomb
I know this may sound far-fetched, but I am proposing a possible merger of developers from all the Galaxy S series. I know that the hardware may slightly differ, but apart from a led flash here, ffc, keyboard, and 4g, the hardware is the same. After all, 10+ devs are better than 1 or 2 per section. Perhaps a seperate subforum for devs or senior members only to create and test new roms can be created, members test with their own phones and report, and devs can collaborate.
I understand that some junior members may complain about beta bugs and such, but that is why I proposed a restricted area only to those who fully comprehend that a new rom does include bugs.
I know CM7 is such a project, but perhaps we should extend that scope to something beyond that, and utilize the advantage that Samsung has given us by 10 million sales.
Well, while that is the true XDA dream, the variations of the Galaxy S devices really are quite different. You have 4 main devices that each use different radio hardware and bands that each ROM must be cooked specifically to work with. The ammount of flash memory in each is different.
The idea is a nice one, but the execution would be massively flawed IMHO, as they are such different devices.
I think it's a great idea, but one that won't work until Samsung provides each, or most of the devices with a good base to work from. I have heard of the amount of hacking needing to be done to get even a partially functional AOSP rom working for the Fascinate, and I can't imagine it's all that much better for other devices. While it'd be great, I don't see it working ATM. Although, from what I've heard, the latest updates seem to tie all the devices together much better than the initial releases did, so maybe revisit the idea in a couple months?
Who says devs for the sgs variants don't talk to each other?
I know that myself and others consult devs for other sgs devices quite frequently. There are many mods that span all sgs devices.
IMO a forum merging them all would be pointless. Don't have to converse in public to make progress

I cant help but feel that they are. With projects being abandoned left and right, I feel as if the domino effect is starting to take place. Devs are getting "bored" therefore us end users start jumping ship also. Then more devs leave etc etc. Feels like that process has begun. I, like many have put my phone up on craigslist in hopes of getting something better with a more active community around it. I do not want to sound ungrateful to the dev s that we do have. They have made my phone what I love today. But I can't help but feel like even the remaining ones have lost passion and drive for this phone.
I can't help but feel that the escalating high school drama over the past few weeks due to little or no moderation has been the tipping point for devs to leave and move on. I can only hope that someone high enough puts a plug in the dam before its too late and it all comes crashing down and no amount of money or resources can synthetically create the magic we already have now. Here is hoping.

It could seem that way, but lets be real here for a minute.
There are a few devs who decided to stop working on the vibrant. More specifically , decided to stop posting their work here on XDA. Mostly because of the drama that starts in here and the lack of appreciation that is given to them for their "FREE" work.
But, and here's my main point, there are still MANY devs who have never spoken about leaving and are continuing to bring us great mods and roms. We have entire teams of devs like Team Whiskey and Eienharjar Developement Team who still continue to work on great things for our phones. Not to mention people who make mods consistantly. Supercurio, Morphic, etc etc.
It's just a few people who decided it's not fun anymore and are moving on. It doesn't mean the END ALL BE ALL of Vibrant development. I think we should stop dwelling on the drama of a few people who on their own decided to leave and still support those that are STILL here to help us.
Technology moves fast. Newer things come out and some people just get bored fast and get tired of the mudslinging.
Be appreciative to the devs and supporters that are still here, still making things, and still helping us with our questions. Android is an OPEN SOURCE PROJECT. People come... people go. But don't get caught up in the politics of some. Support those that stay. But don't forget those that left a huge impact on Android and this modding community.
I love Android. I love the community, and understand I have to deal with some disrespectful kids/noobs/adults.
Thank you to all who stick around and help us out, and good luck to those who went on to better or more phone projects.

Unless CM7 is near final and it can be used as a stable base, then we will be stuck with the same roms probably as all are based on Samsung's source. The reason the G2 has such large development is due to the large amounts of stable roms, MIUI, CM, and a a stock rom( which we do have).
And with the leaving of Eugene, the Vibrant is basically starting to sink. Those new to these forums may not remember, but he has contributed many stable roms in the past and greatly contributed to the startup on development. We will miss you Eugene!
A galaxy s merger was what I proposed in the previous forums where some international and US developers may contribute to each other's work in a seperate forum dedicated to devs.

Yup. Development may seem to be slowing but lets not forget that we have an whole other i9000 dev forum to choose ROMs from. Especially while they are mostly 2.2.1 ROMs. That'll prolly change (at least for a while) once all the i9000 devs abandon 2.2.1 for gingerbread.
Not every phone will have the lifespan of the g1, hd2, etc... But one can hope lol.
Even the Nexus One development is slowing down with only small updates to previous roms. Guess even their devs are moving.
Lucky me that I have a hd2.
Was considering getting one of those Hd2 for all the development around it but I can't help but feel like it would be a step down.

Not everyone feels the need to upgrade every 6 months to a year, especially when the new dual cores don't provide a huge difference than the hummingbird chip + voodoo in daily use (maybe 3 second gain in web browsing). With android 2.2.1, the galaxy s touchwiz launcher and browser use gpu acceleration, so it will be just as smooth (if you don't believe me use a live wallpaper on the twlauncher, then use it on launcherpro).
However, tegra 2 will set the new standard, so our power sgx 540 will do just fine for the next year (comparable performances).

Yes to an extent. There are alot of phones that are years old and still have development. I understand that they probably are not samsung and probably have all of the source code. But to me, it seems that this phone has not even reached the pinnacle of what it can do. Alot of roms (bionix exempt) are still trying to just get everything working a 100%. Having a phone really becomes a ton of fun when the development gets past just making it all work. It's really a shame if this will never be possible because of samsungs code.

Being that the vibrant was a high end phone when it was released, it still stands up to alot of the newer phones. To leave this phone behind just because it's getting "old" (less than a year is old for cell phone nowadays = bull****), is stupid.
Maybe devs should spend some time porting the Nexus S APIs so as to provide a good base for future roms.
And in the end, I have to admit that if you want fast updates, go Windows Phone, or IOS if you are really desperate.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I've seen us lose basically two significant development projects.
Meanwhile we retain several equivalent kernel devs, multiple ongoing rom development projects, progress on CM7, and a slowly building flood of ports from the i9000 dev community.
Furthermore we're finally to a point where this is less about stamping out annoyances with Samsung's lackluster tuning and poor choices, and more about customization and the tailoring of experiences.
i.e. there's less to be ecstatic about, but only because things are no longer fundamentally broken and because development has matured.
My take is that these are good and evolutionary developments. You also have to remember that developers cater to their own whims as much as ours, and it's entirely normal for them to "move on". This is what happens when a community is dynamic and HEALTHY.
I've been on the net longer than most here have been alive, and trolls will always be trolls. If you're expecting the high school drama and angst to vanish entirely in a constantly churning public forum such as this you have unrealistic expectations.
All is well!
Thats a different way of looking at it master, interesting.
While I somewhat agree with this thread, I'd say give the other devs some time, like maybe a month and see what they come up with, we might get a Gingerbread port or a leak from GS4G. Team Whiskey and EDT will surely come up with something I believe.
Also, I don't understand the craze about HD2, it was a great phone in its time, now if you want ROMS and active dev section, probably better to get Nexus S or wait for Optimus 3D I am sure it'll be sold like hot cakes when it comes out.

Hell yeah! Let's hear it for us old farts! I've been on the web since Windows 95. A very scary thought. I actually started with a commodore 64 and it's Gigantic floppy disk drive. When I look back at those days, the worst rom on here is blazing fast and bug free!

I open this thread because I think there is something wrong.
Why the note3, note2 etc. already 'there are rom final of galaxy s5, ma s4 we are still to zero? I can not understand why!
I hope that the moderators can understand the outburst of a user who has a passion for android.
I hope I have given a shock to everyone in the friendly way.
thanks for your attention.
I know what you are saying. There doesn't seem to be many devs and themers etc in the international S4 forums, and the few there is dont seem to be very helpful or active, especially in the themes and apps thread.
In all the time I have been coming here, I don't think I have seen a single 'recognised developer' or 'recognised themer' in any of the many threads, especially the S5 threads.
It's pretty shocking really, especially with the S4 being so popular. You would think it would have far more support than it does.

in fact! The galaxy s4 is one of the phones most 'popular, and you do not understand where are all the developers, maybe they are secretly at work but at least they could warn us so we are more' quiet ....
outputs are a few applications, and most also have bugs .... it's something a bit 'sad what's going on
It is sad but i have to agree the S4 is not getting attention of much developers, dont know why it is the most sold Android phone and still the Note 2 and 3 beat us for number of developers, they have ported all s5 apps and we are just struggling trying to do it by us with copying things here and there.
Dont know why so
For Note 2, Sammy released a fully Libs/Framwork Base, so porting was verry easy,
For Note 3, Devs Mad great works, but still in progress
For us, We need to wait
Yeah I agree with you guys note 3 got all s5 features even ultra power saving mode. All least they can port the rom ( ditto note 3 ) for us.
Something that Samsung should have provided to all flagshi pphones from day1...

amen to that m8
It would be nice if you all stop asking for this and that... No dev signed a contract saying he would provide all latest features to S4. Its not their job. So just wait until someone capable does that, if you can't wait sell your phone and buy the latest one as you want Thread reported.

it's just a friendly protest!
it is useless to say you wait and sell the phone etc ... we all know how it works do not need him to tell you ... it was just kind of a question to understand why the developers for s4 (popular phone) are so 'absent

Yeah yeah yeah. The international S4 forums hardly gets any support from 'recognised' devs and themers etc, thats just the truth of the matter. You virtually never see recognised devs helping out in the apps and themes forum. With their knowledge and skills, they could get all or most of the latest and greatest apps from the S5 working on our phones, because everything that is needed to get them working, is right there in the ROM. It just needs someone knowledgable and with experience with android and TW ROM's to figure it out. I just wish the guys with the knowledge would help people out more!

Hahahhaha.
Bro let me tell u something
A lot of developer more likely to ported or focus on note due to certain reason
1st larger community starting from note 1.
2nd all dev are helping each other on rom
3rd note are more user friendly framework based on certain dev.
Just pray. So far follow more than one thread. S4, note 2 and note 3 development. And downloading 1xxx gb of rom files and apk of s5 to mod it with my s4.
So far i do excited. Even sometimes i have to flash and wipe my phone more than 5 times. Soft brick blalallalala
And do understand s9me of dev are studyin
Just relax and wait with patience hehhe

@nplnpl isn't this a great opportunity you to step up to plate and become a recognized dev or themer

Hi Dudes.
From a theme perspective, there is not too much to do nowadays for the S4. Stable ROMs with few unnoticeable firmware update changes led to this. Since KK release, Sammy added only 1 lonely PNG !!!
While porting a theme to the Note3 community, S5 apps flooded the ROMs with doubtful results. Lots of FC's ... Music hardly opens.
So, may be we can just enjoy the stability and try to calm down our ORD.
Nice regards.
.
To be honest the is probably a few reasons we are seeing less and less on these forums.
1. Many ROMs are ported to dozens of devices, meaning maintainers are needed to work across all phones. Likelihood is some models are more time consuming then others.
2. The s4 was a flagship device, devs don't earn a huge amount for what they do so for a lot the top end devices are out of the question until the price drops
3. In line with above, as the price comes down, the price of newer models released do too. For example, my wife's note 3 was released at the same price my s4 was worth 6 months after release.
4. In general, a fair amount of Developers come from the US, this device is null and void to them.
5. We seem to of hit a plateau regarding features and performance for the s4 where as newer devices have newer features to build on.
6. Its summer (nearly) and a lot will be studying for exams
Make of my views what you will...

While I do agree with the obvious.. all great devs have jumped ship, a thing I am truly sorry for, we have no right to protest. They don't owe us anything.
All they did, they did from passion and on this base they've created this wonderful community - xda which indeed grew along with Samsung and HTC a few years ago, period in which Samsung was the no 1 choice for any big dev.
They weren't payed for this, some didn't even got the respect they would've deserved and nowadays they have other priorities, other passions or other preferred device on which to try their magic. It's their decision, they probably have good reasons for this and we can just accept and respect their decision in respect for their great work.
Beside, the context has changed, now there are many potent OEMs, each really trying to do their best when it comes to fast updates, functionality of the sw and top notch hw.
_______ _______ _______ _______
Anyway, just wanted to get you guys a glimpse of hope.
Apparently @sac23 is ready to start working on a direct port of the s5 to the s4 (just after he irons out the last few things the on the s5 port to n3).
This beside all the great work @Albe95 , @Arsaw , @Tamerlan2009 , @m_beek , @Carotix , all roms maintainers etc. are doing!
Fun isn't over yet boys!!!
