Managing Data (Help Stay Below 200mb/mo) - Atrix 4G General

Going to get my Atrix in 2 days...dropped from unlimited to the 200mb plan. I know people will advise against it but I think I could manage. I came from WM and only went over 200mb once in my 2 years (averaged around 130mb/mo).
What are the best data managing tools?
I know leaving wifi on all the time will drain the battery but are there any tools that could use the GPS to turn on and off wifi based on location? ex. GPS checks location every hour and turns on wifi if it is within 2000ft of presaved wifi locations (ie home, office, school)
I have read opera mini will save the most data vs the default browser.
How can I manage Google Maps from using alot of data?

I made the same move from unlimited. I'm around wifi like 99% of the time, but liked not having to worry about going over limit. I installed 3G Watchdog from the marketplace, amd it really helps to see how much data you are using.

Locale is one app you might be looking for.

Tasker is a very good program. Read up on it

You should definitely get 3G wwatchdog; I'm using that now and love it.
Also, make sure you use wifi as much as possible (obviously) and yea, I would use opera Mobile as a good browser.

Jeeze, good luck...
Even on a good month I'll use 1.5 gigs, and I don't even stream music or anything...

Maybe change you accounts to sync only on wifi as well?

Carefull at night for me, it switched from wifi to 4g. I had to disable mobile data manually via app quick setting.

If you can, you should definitely try to get the extra!10 to use the 2 gigs.
You'll use 6mb (about the daily budget) within 10 minutes of surfing the net viewing full sites. Seriously.

I dont know what you are doing but I use opera mini and only rack up about .5mb for 30mins of intense surfing.

Slacker radio issues

Just curious if anyone had issues with slacker closing it self out after about 30 minutes of play. Pisses me off, because the app won't reopen from the recently used apps list, have to launch it back from the app drawer. It also closes out of the notification bar. I dont think this is normal because my hero would play all day. If others are having the problem, I want to write the dev and see what they have to say about it.

Which ROM? DK28 has horrible RAM management.
Slacker, once a great app that is now pure garbage. I uninstalled that thing months ago. Would open by itself in the background, ate batteries for lunch, and too many ads.

It almost seems as if Slacker watches for user interaction with the device and after about a half hour it will close if you don't interact w/ your device.
Really gets on my nerves too. It does the same thing for me but I've never paid attention to how soon it will shut down.
I've been using Pandora quite a bit lately.

Yeah, this seems to be it - if I don't use the device at all, it closes down. Which sucks, I usually lay it on my desk while I roam the server room and listen to music.
It's funny sometimes I don't even realize it if I get busy on a project. But as soon as I do I have to go back and turn it back on. Pisses me off. I think Ill switch back to pandora...they both have their ups and downs. But I thought slacker was good for general background noise where pandora was good if I wanted something specific.

Ever try Tune In Radio? It broadcasts actual radio stations. I use it mostly for sports talk in my car. I use Pandora sometimes in my car also, but it's not a fav for a variety of reasons

I also use TuneIn to listen to out of state radio stations, however, I prefer to pick artists that may not always be mainstream in one way or another..
Pandora is above average for this requirement, however, it does lack in others LOL
It amazes me how many people have problems with this app!
I use slacker at work and in my car for multiple hours every day and I've never had an issue. I do have a premium account, but I don't see how that would matter...
I've run stock, Syndicate, Midnight, & Viper roms and I've received nothing but excellent performance every time (streaming over bluetooth btw).
I guess it just really shows you how your mileage may vary from device to device, lol.

Can you test something for us since you're the only person that I'm aware of that has a premium account ??
Creat a free account and try it out for a week or just a few days and see if you experience similar problems. Maybe it works 'indefinitely' since you're a paying subscriber.. Seriously though, I was about to pay for premium because I like the caching option for times when I don't have a good signal or whatever.

[Q] Xoom usage inquiries to actual users/owners

Reposting from the tips and tricks thread.
Hi guys! just wanted to ask for some helpful information about the xoom, will be getting mine soon and I am still deciding on which to keep (ipad 2 or this)
Was an android user myself (cm6 on nexus1) so am quite familiar with the advantages and expandability of Android.
If I may ask the following:
1.) can i load a youtube video in the background and while waiting, multitask by browsing? (bandwidth in this part of the world is bad - we are waiting for youtube videos to load, even at a 360p resolution
2.) is the browser really as good as it gets? can it load forum pages with more than 20 pictures loading fine without crashing? background loading in tabs is a HUUUGE deal for me, is it really working "as advertised"?- close to (if not exactly like) a computer experience?
3.) how many tabs can i load? any real world input is appreciated. (in the ipad , i can load only a forum page with a lot of pictures)
4.) can i load videos in avi format?
5.) actual battery life? -(ipad is advertised as 10, and is really 10, any feedbacks on actual users?) - answered already in the other thread
6.) how is the 1gb ram for multitasking? is it always running out of ram? (nothing fancy, just loading youtube vids in the background, then browsing through 4-6 tabs, checking mail and chatting in Gtalk) the 1gb ram can easily handle these I presume?
Very optimistic about the potential of the tablet, I am hoping to get answers from actual users who have been already using the xoom, please enlighten us
4. I throw my avi movies on the xoom and watch them fine with rockplayer lite. Mkv. will need to get converted over to mp4 to work. I havent tried dl'ing them straight from the xoom though.

#1. No. It seems like youtube is set to be in hibernation stage when you leave/tabbed to the browser.
#2. Yes. The browser is as good as it gets. Forum pages with images loads with no problem.
#3. 16 tabs.. That's just on the default browser (chrome) that came with android. Another 8 for the Dolphin browser that you can get from the market.
#4. Skipped, check the post above me.
#5. I'm on my 10th hour now with 67% left on moderate use (browsing and watching youtube videos playing games). About 3-4 hours total usage out of the 10. Note: I saw some reviewer claiming 8+ hours of playing movies, so I'd say it depends on what and how you use it.
#6. Not a single hiccup!! It's just too fast! And the 1GB RAM is way more than adequate.

I'd agree with this. Battery is a nonfactor. It's as good as the Ipad with one exception. The Ipad has a 30day standby time. Nothing comes close to that. BUT, for runtime battery drain the Xoom is very good. You'll enjoy at least one day of battery with heavy use.

You cannot. The app must be displayed for it to properly buffer. If you switch tasks and go back to youtube you have to rebuffer again.

browser is phenomenal, but its nowhere near 'bug-free.' Theres tons of force closes if you open multiple tabs. The browser will be refined as the months go by I bet. I use 'Dolphin HD' as an alternative browser and works flawlessly, if not better than the stock Browser. However, I would still prefer to use stock browser as it does look slicker than any other browser out there at the moment

theres still a lot of force closes that i feel a lot of xoom users aren't talking much about. this, however, will be resolved through time.
I had to stop reading after the YouTube comment. You want it to keep buffering while you're searching the web or doing something else? Youtubes play instantly on wifi and on 3g you don't expect it to load while you're browsing the web do you? I say keep the ipad 2

Anyone know if SlideIt or Swype is available for the Xoom yet? Believe it or not, that's the one thing holding me back from going out and buying one right this second. I know I'll be doing a lot of typing on it and like my inspire 4g, the keyboard is rather slow compared to a laptop, but with SlideIT, I can type ON MY PHONE damn near as fast as I can type on a dedicated hardware keyboard, which is baffling to me, to say the least.
SlideIt is on the Market. Never used it but it's there.
Swype beta still only works if you hack build.prop to report Froyo instead of Honeycomb (no tablet layout either).
SwiftKey is not on the Market, although I believe VIP testers will soon get a Honeycomb version.

[Q] HSPDA/3G Issue on ROMs, Radio Question

When I was on stock with my MT4G I stayed on HSPDA almost all the time. Now, after flashing, every ROM has trouble sticking to H and goes back and forth between that and 3g. This has been on GB sense, ICS Sense, ICS CM9, ICS MIUI, and ICS AOKP ROMs equally. (I was on stock for a good while as I didn't require root at the time)
After searching around I see signal strength and data speeds on 3g discussed with radios but not H not sticking and continually flipping. For all i know this isn't even a radio issue.
Anyone Experience the same issue?
Any suggestions for radios or other fixes?
This is extremely annoying as while it flips there is a pause in the data stream so it's almost worse than just having 3g. Any help is greatly appreciated.
This needs no fix. Unless forced otherwise by base station, 3G will be the default connectivity and it'll automatically switch to H whenever traffic is going back and forth. Perfectly normal and expected.
If you get drops to 3G while data is actively required - it means that baseband might be overloaded. In any case, this isn't your phone's fault.
Tested back with the the Stock ROM and I can confirm that it doesn't happen on stock.
Sounds too strange. GB Sense = stock ROM.

Well, the stock ROM has crap battery life. Perhaps it tries to force HPSA+ too often, which looks good when you're staring at your status bar, but kills battery.
I'm probably wrong, but it is a thought.
To clarify the data so people with more knowledge than I have can have an objective look at it. On any ROM, including stock, I tend to stick with H during a continuous download for the most part. Occasionally it will drop to 3g which may be a tower issue like you were saying. At times where I have apps open for data use but not continuous file download, say, in the middle of browsing web pages.... Even as a web page is loading I get continuous flickering back and forth of 3g/H on multiple ROMs but not on stock.

Don't look at the damn icons, look at Settings/About/Status, and if you don't understand what's written there - measure speed with SpeedTest. That's it!

Watch your data usage

Group,
Just a heads up. I just noticed today that my new S3 is using a lot of mobile data. settings->data usage. I think it came from how photos are now synced to picasa by default when you add your primary gmail account. In less then a week I have used over 500mb with more then 300mb of that being used by the Gallery app. Coincidentally, I stopped the picasa sync a couple days ago because I did not want the picasa albums to show in my phone gallery. Since then, there has been no bandwidth used from gallery.

+1 for Speedtest. I got a little excited with LTE speed tests the first few days. 40+ Mbps allows for a lot of tests in a short period of time

[Q] Terrible wifi; ROM or old tech?

So I recently got this tablet, rooted it, and installed the 4.3 nightlys (this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413878)
I've been bringing it to work so I can just get things done faster reading e-mail and news without distracting during my breaks. At some point, I started to noticed how incredibly slow things loaded up such as trying to load articles from feedly as well as its videos. I later noticed that my wifi was only 2 bars. I figured it was enough but apparently it isn't as things just load up so bloody slow.
I decided to to download the app, Speed Test, into the tablet and found out I've been downloading at crappy speeds of 900-1100 kbps while my Samsung Galaxy S4, in the same area I'm testing the speed, is running at ridiculous speeds of 26-30 >mbps<.
I actually restore the tablet back to original stock and tested again and same deal. Has anyone got this problem? I'm leading to believe its old hardware which would be incredibly disappointing if that's the case... but maybe there's an update or fix for this terrible wifi?
Check your Advanced WiFi settings - disable 'WiFi optimisation' and see how that goes. Apparently it slows things down!

I turned off and used it for a few days; same issue. Is there any other possibilities? Any patches or fixes for this? Because if it's really because of old tech, I'm going to sell this and try out Swappa to avoid eBay fees for such a disappointment.
Maybe you got a bad tablet mine off n router is way faster then that. Loads almost instantly
Sent from inside my mkv.
the router/modem combo that Time Warner gave me is junk, don't know what the hell is wrong with it
but other routers at my friends houses seem to do fine
so i'm guessing it's a hardware issue
im going to hook my d-link router up to the modem/router combo (if i can ever figure it out)
oh yeah, if anyone know how to do that (router to router) message me or something
