Watch your data usage - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Group,
Just a heads up. I just noticed today that my new S3 is using a lot of mobile data. settings->data usage. I think it came from how photos are now synced to picasa by default when you add your primary gmail account. In less then a week I have used over 500mb with more then 300mb of that being used by the Gallery app. Coincidentally, I stopped the picasa sync a couple days ago because I did not want the picasa albums to show in my phone gallery. Since then, there has been no bandwidth used from gallery.

yes it keep syncing and also the dropbox too...
i have to turn it off...
@[email protected] um...aside from the usage...does anyone have any experience with the app ovano extend? it said it can compress data for you, but is it safe to use? cuz your behavior is going through their server like rimm but this company is not as famous as rimm...

Good heads up :good:
Any other apps that we should take note too? Anyone else observe any other heavy data hog apps?

hahahah probably speed test?
i did like 10 speed test or something and its about like 120mb gone @[email protected]

I use Onavo Count with Onavo Extend to monitor my data usage. I also use the built in data monitor. I have never had a limited data plan so I'm being extra cautious. As far as automatic uploads for Google+ and Dropbox, I have mine set to only upload when on WiFi.

+1 for Speedtest. I got a little excited with LTE speed tests the first few days. 40+ Mbps allows for a lot of tests in a short period of time

I use 3G Watchdog Pro, well worth the purchase. It's very accurate, and usually only off by a few kilobytes at the end of the week. Then I just do *3282# and correct it based off the message I get.

Managing Data (Help Stay Below 200mb/mo)

Going to get my Atrix in 2 days...dropped from unlimited to the 200mb plan. I know people will advise against it but I think I could manage. I came from WM and only went over 200mb once in my 2 years (averaged around 130mb/mo).
What are the best data managing tools?
I know leaving wifi on all the time will drain the battery but are there any tools that could use the GPS to turn on and off wifi based on location? ex. GPS checks location every hour and turns on wifi if it is within 2000ft of presaved wifi locations (ie home, office, school)
I have read opera mini will save the most data vs the default browser.
How can I manage Google Maps from using alot of data?
I made the same move from unlimited. I'm around wifi like 99% of the time, but liked not having to worry about going over limit. I installed 3G Watchdog from the marketplace, amd it really helps to see how much data you are using.
http://www.twofortyfouram.com/
Locale is one app you might be looking for.
Tasker is a very good program. Read up on it
You should definitely get 3G wwatchdog; I'm using that now and love it.
Also, make sure you use wifi as much as possible (obviously) and yea, I would use opera Mobile as a good browser.
Jeeze, good luck...
Even on a good month I'll use 1.5 gigs, and I don't even stream music or anything...
Maybe change you accounts to sync only on wifi as well?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Carefull at night for me, it switched from wifi to 4g. I had to disable mobile data manually via app quick setting.

If you can, you should definitely try to get the extra!10 to use the 2 gigs.
You'll use 6mb (about the daily budget) within 10 minutes of surfing the net viewing full sites. Seriously.

I dont know what you are doing but I use opera mini and only rack up about .5mb for 30mins of intense surfing.

How's IR Blaster? Did you get it to work with your TV? Also Any performance issues Lag etc?
I'm at work so haven't tried that feature.
No apparent lag...the screen is beautiful, but my other phone is the Optimus G so this is not noticeably faster.

One of the things I hate doing is swiping a whole bunch to scroll through length webpages or forums.
Have you used the smart scroll feature to surf any pages? How well does it work? Does away with all the swiping that is normally done while surfing on a smartphone browser?
Have you tried the NFC? I assume it works in exactly the same way as GS3...?
---------- Post added at 03:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:31 PM ----------
Also, could you take pictures of the phone itself? In addition, a picture of the apps that are in the drawer immidiately upon boot?
Just tried it on a few pages...it seems to work really well...I guess it is based on the angle at which it thinks your eyes are looking at the screen so you can trigger it by tilting the phone. I can scroll up and down an entire page without touching the screen, and stop wherever I want to read something.

I'm not a big NFC user and didn't have a GS3, but I just sent a web page from the S4 to my Optimus G and it works the same way I remember.

Unfortunately it started downloading all my apps I have ever installed on my play account as soon as the phone cranked up.
In my best fake Australian accent...
"What a beauty!"
Thanks for the pics!
Could you take a pic of the battery vs. the S3's battery? or just the battery of the S4 if you don't own an S3. How's the movies quality on the S4? Thanks.
LTE speeds? and area you are testing?
No S3 here...My old phone is the LG Optimus G
The screen is great, movie quality is awesome, HD!

It's definitely nice, the screen is probably it's best feature. My other phone is the LG Optimus G so the S4 is not a big spec jump. It almost feels too light, but I am attributing that to the fact that my OG is a slab of glass.

Could you give us a real world example of the "dual camera" feature? I guess you simply have your face over whatever picture you took with the main shooter? The reviewers are excited about this feature, but I can't figure out any practical example of why this would be useful...

Maybe if you're filming a video and you want to talk about what you are filming? Maybe showing the reaction on your face to whatever it is you are taking a picture of. Video reviewers will like it because they can show their face while recording their review.
I'm definitely with you on that....the only thing I could see it being useful for is capturing your reaction to the picture you are taking...? It actually frames your face in a postage stamp and overlays that on the rear camera picture. I guess they are trying to make the picture taker not feel left out of the picture.

Where is auto sync please?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Doesn't solve anything for me. Hit the Phone icon, Phone app opens with no info on it, just shows the layout, and after a couple of seconds the dealer/buttons show up. It's still slow for my taste.
Obviously this behavior it only happens the first time i open the Phone/contacts app, if it's already opened on the background it's super fast.
The only thing that my Note 3 beats my old 200€ quad core, in terms of speed, it's on bench scores. It scores 3-4x times more, but that doesn't translate in every day use at all. I imagine it will beat it in games too, but i don't use my phone for that.
Still happy with the phone, but something is missing. All this hardware power....

Settings > General > Accounts - then choose which accounts you want to sync/un sync etc - If you have Facebook contacts sync on and Gmail contacts sync on it'll slow your device a bit due to having to sync when you open contacts/Dialer.

after i enabled this feature internet is much faster on my S6 Edge

Hello, I like to share you this feature in Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, it's really helped me to get faster internet cause it combines WiFi with Data.

but it will surely drain your battery

you can enable/disable when you need , for example if you in need to get faster internet to download you enable, then disable after using, i found it useful on my phone.
The only notice to take into consideration, if your Wifi is very slow (some countries having limited quota for ADSL internet then drop speed to 512 Kb ) and you enable download booster, in this case will not help, you better need to disable Wifi and use only data.

Samsung put this option and rarely who tried. In my case was useful. But of course drains battery faster. But you get more speed. Everything has a cost.

yes there was already news reported about the app on the pixel's and that it was actually slowing them down, so i would imagine any phone that has this installed would have the same results.
