Universal suddenly shuts down; battery or other problem?

I recently acquired a HTC Universal for dirt cheap, and have found the first problem to explain the low price: Whenever I'm using a "power-hungry" application (TCPMP, Internet via Wi-Fi) it eventually just blacks out. Full shutdown without warning.
When trying to reactivate the unit, it reboots as if after a soft reset.
In fact, if I try to reactivate it too quickly, even the reboot fails.
None of the above happens when on external power.
This leads me to think that it's nothing worse than a battery that's lost its mojo, but since there is no warning about low battery, and when the reboot finishes successfully even SPB says the battery is somewhere around 70%, I want to run this by you guys.
What do you think? Just go get a new battery, or is there something else going on which will make buying a new battery just a waste of money?

I'd say it's the battery, 99% sure.
I'ts gotten old and its voltage breaks down under load. If you have proper equipment and a glimpse of an idea what you're doing you should drain about 300mA from the battery and measure its output voltage.
You'll most likely see it going below 3.0V quickly.

I'm afraid I don't have that equipment, but all I really needed to hear was that it's probably the battery.
Now I can stop thinking about it and just order a new batery.

I knew I wasn't the only one withthat problem. I think i've prooved it to be a battery faultt. as if you taake te battery out after it gets to that stage where you just can not get it too complete a boot up without it shuttinng down again
take out battery ,place finer oveer all battery trmminals and plug inn your mainss charger it should now boot up and runn fin off the charger unless your finger slips off the battery terminals. thisshsowws it's the temprature sensor in the battery.

Hmm, the idea that a temperature sensor in the battery causes this problems is interesting. I'd just expect the device not being cappable of rebooting instantly, because there should be a hysteresis implemented in the battery's protection circuit.
I had the exact same problems and described them elsewhere, but in my case it surely wasn't an issue of temperature.
I'd suggest to take out the battery and wait about an hour for the device and the battery to cool off. Most likely the battery will then take a complete boot but shut down soon after that - without having gotten near to "warm" yet.
If this happens you can be sure that the battery itself is dead without needing to measure anything.

Okay, to tell you what I tried:
I ran the Universal until it spontaneously went dead.
Started bootlaoder to see how much longer it would work on that. Was a bit longer, what with low energy consumption, but soon even that wouldn't stay on for long.
Then decided to try the "old wives' tale" (meaning I don't know whether there's any sense behind it or not) of putting the battery in the freezer for a little while.
When I took it out and let it get back to normal temp, I plugged it in and after a while booted the Universal. It showed 40% battery, lower than it had ever gotten lately.
Recharged for a full day.
Tried TCPMP: went dead after three minutes.
So in my experience the above didn't help battery performance.
Am going to get a new battery in a few days; I'll keep you posted on progress as I try with a fresh battery.

I just bought a new 3100mAh battery. Best thing i ever did. It might be thicker now with the new battery, but it actually feels more comfortable as a phone. Plus the new battery only cost 13 odd quid, so definately well worth it. Oh and it doubles the battery life (3100/1500 = ~2... duh)

oh you know wat i have the same problem with my Jasjar and the bigest problem that there is no batteries on market for Jasjars in my country....its looks like im living in Jurassic Century!!!

I ordered a regular battery replacement, but maybe I'll add a 3100mAh as well.
I could use it as a media player during long train trips.

I revived two batteries by intense cycling to work quite well again. They still black out at 20%, but only under extreme load (active gsm connection, active wifi, bluetooth and having to render a webpage).
But you should be able to discharge them below 25% at least. Else they're most certainly "too dead" already. And you should do at least 3-4 cycles.
My guess would be that the freezer finished your battery off. I don't understand how this method should work anyway, as lower temperatures reduce the time affected capacity loss. Actually the best place to store a LiPo or LIo battery is the fridge, charged about half the way.
But I also ordered two 3100mAh batteries. I'm using the Uni as a laptop replacement and the permanent wifi usage together with some cpu load and the backlight kicks the battery's ass quite hard.
In Germany the China 3100mAhs are overpriced and it's hard to get your hands on an external charger, but on Ebay.co.uk there's a seller that offers battery and charger as a bundle for about 15€. This will give me a solid 6000+mAh per day and should be enough to forget about virtually every setting related to power consumption

hhh ok buddy you too for care....but there is realy no way i have to wait tell some one(my brothers friend) come from USA so he can get me one from there....its ok...i can use it yet as a normal mobile...i have some other devices for multimedia right now i can wait there is no any other ways....thanks...

Just to give you all the end of the story:
I ordered a regular replacement and a 3200 mAh one, and both have returned my Universal to a well-used life.

For you guys does the device switch off only when the battery is low, or any time. Cause I have this problem as well, and I was SURE that it wasn't a battery problem until I read this thread. The phone switches off intermittently, sometimes after only 3' talk time right after it had been charging for a full 8 hours! Also, usually if I let it sit there for a few hours I could then turn it back on and it would last a full day, so I knew it wasn't due to low battery.
The overheating theory would explain my problem, as, now that I think about it, all my seemingly-random shutdowns were during radio activity (making or receiving calls, especially when the phone was searching for signal, or wifi, which would almost instantly kill it). Strange that it overheats like this, most phone batteries simply run out of charge faster and faster until they can't hold a charge at all, but mine lasts almost as long as it always lasted even though it's 2 years old - unless I get the shutdown thing of course.

I asked this in another thread, but since this one is full of people who got replacement batteries I'll repeat my question here as well:
How much thicker than the standard battery are the 3100 and the 4200mAh ones?

There is a problem with our battery life and we all know its true... I have even been given a new battery and HTC mains charger
I turn off any service im not using at the time (ie: wifi, BT, GPS, NETGPS,etc) not that I should have to do this, but lets story on track...
My battery will make about 1 day as I am A "power user" but if its not plugged in I wont have the juice for my alarm to wake me up, my wifes Sony Ericsson lasts 4-5 days per charge, but lets not compare apples and oranges, the whi-phone 3g my sister has sahe bought it about the same times as my g1, she hadn't ever heard of "deep cycling" 2-5 times when you get a new phone, she never lets it discharge fully and just tops off all the time, AFAIK she is treating a NIMH cell exactly the wrong way, BUT SHE GETS 1-3 DAYS depending on the type of use, and never turns off ANY of the 3g, gps, net gps, wifi, BT nada and Id say she uses hers alot because its her primary camera, GPS & A/V player
my question is WHY?
Im sure there must be somebody involved with the development of this phone/OS that reads thru here, since there is more exciting stuff coming from XDA than there is the market...

they better come off a new battery almost all other new phones will get 1-2 day + average use, Ive had phones that could go 3-4. but the state of the art G1 mindblowing innovative phone wont even work a whole day, so what if its bigger than the whi-phone, it has no keyboard.
I for one would like to hear some solid info on a replacement battery and back, for new and existing G1 users, early adopters got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on the HTC->headphone jack adapter I got the headphones with the htc angled adapter from fleabay, so many manufactures stick it to the early adopter, when we are the ones that get the word of mouth going, as people go "WOW that thing is cool!,what is it?! they know when we bought out phones and should be able to figure out when the head phone rev change was made, so send them to the first of the buyers....

I think the bad press is starting to out weigh the good press the G1 and possibly android as a whole is at a crossroad. If the g1 tanks Android will be stained forever...thankfully enuff I dont think XDA-DEV would give up on this badboy, I love this thing, and I love it for what it can be

HTC/Google need to fix battery problems in G1. Maybe it's soft bug, but maybe it's a hardware bug - Nobody knows

I dunno. With normal use, I get about 12 hours or more from my stock battery. That's about the same as other HTC phones I've had.

there is a battery issue and we are al aware of it.
i have managed to have it last through out the day
just set the brightness to the lowest possible, sleep time to 15 secs
turn off data and wifi and anything else that you are not using
its not how the phone was intended to be used, but it's what i ave to do for now

I find it fine for everyday use. Of course I haven't done a full test but maybe tomorrow I will.

I would like to use my G1 like I use my WinMo but no way I can with the battery.

I think you're exaggerating here a little bit. The battery life, while it got press at first, has faded from the limelight of android news for the general population. The G1 is already far from a flop and I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden mass return of all the handsets sold.
Let’s face it living on the cutting edge means you will get cut sometimes. Your high expectations will not always be met and manufacturers will frequently not care. The battery life is less than what many people expected, but we’ve learned to deal with it. At least we have options (power management, backup batteries, and expanded capacity batteries), but I’d not hold my breath on HTC making any major moves. How long has the issue been going with the TYTN II drivers anyway?

I have no idea what kind of use gets 1-3 days, but it certainly isn't 3G web browsing. Most iPhone 3G battery life tests clock 3G data use at about 3-5 hours. Based on my own usage of a friend's iPhone 3G, that seems to be about right. Coincidentally my G1 gets about 3-5 hours of 3G data use as well.
Frankly, from an engineer's point of view I have not seen any power drain tests conducted with enough rigor and variable control to be worthy of being called a truly scientific analysis. Even the best "battery life tests" out there aren't declaring what type of testing environment (los and distance to closest 3G tower), what background apps are installed, ambient temperature (which affects the battery discharge profile), etc. Without considering and removing these variables from the test, deviation could be as high as... well there's no fixing the percentage really. It's all just junk data.

I do notice after I installed Task Manager, to close out programs I am not using my battery life went up. There are a lot of un needed start up apps.

Yep my friend has iphone and we did test last weekend, both went 3 hours and change then died. If i dont use internet and set timeout and brightness down plus use task manager mine will go as long as my dash. I personally dont care about the battery life, i have a computer, home charger and car charger and i drive for a living so if it gets low no biggie. In my opinion i dont see android going anywhere and i love the g1. Just like wm its gonna take time to get off the ground. To say its at a crossroads is ridiculous.

I am using ADP1.1 and yea if I am browsing the net with 3G for 3-5 hours straight I start seeing the battery go down. But from 100% to 0% takes me longer than 5 hours. I know because I like to lay in bed and don't care to come check my messages LOL

I bought a G1 last week and so far I have been really dissapointed. After having an elf and seeing other htc phones I was expecting big things from the G1.
I am now a week into ownership and after 5 full charge - discharge cycles I am managing to get 24 hours out of the phone with next to no use what so ever. If i check my emails and do 30 mins browsing the phone is dead in 6 or less.
The hardware is simply put 'very poor' my screen is wobbly and the back is loose, all this after just a week.
As for android, it is fantastic everything I expected (except hotmail support) and there is no way it is going to flop. Its just a shame that google and htc didn't wait until they had the right phone for the job.
Thats just my 10p worth!!

It all depends on what you have installed. for me the start up is. I beleve amazon does too, but I uninstalled that. But the first thing I do is go into task manager and kill everything. And only like two things auto start up. I really with HTC built in a x-button app for android. I loved the click x for close.

Under light usage I get about 36 hours from full charge to shutdown. That's GPS on, Bluetooth on, Autosync on, periodically doing e-mail and web browsing.
Under heavy usage (Which is basically I listened to MP3s for 2 hours) it goes at least 17 hours before I plug it back in. I haven't tested but I'd bet it could go 20 or more.
That's as good as (or better) than I was getting on the Wizard/MDA.

I dunno if anyone has stated it but the problem with the battery has to do with the phone recieving the cell signal. For some reason the phone runs in overload when searching for a cell signal...I noticed this one day when T-Mo suspended my service and my battery meter never moved all day, I think by night it was down to 85-90%...sure enough that night when I paid my bill and the phone started picking up signal again, the battery depleted at "normal" speed.

Why do i keep hearing that there is no hotmail support? Android (and G1) works with hotmail just fine! Just go to the Email program and set it up. WHY!! .. I am having connection errors sometimes though..
Battery is a big issue. Never had any luck with it.. EVER.. just unplugged it and after about 1+ hour it's down to 66%. Played a game (slide puzzle) watched 2 youtube vids of about 3 minutes each. And I had it fully drained and recharged a couple of times in the beginning. It didn't even took 10 minutes to drop from 100% to 89%.. But I was on wifi.. Maybe this is normal.
Software has a lot to do with this I think. Yesterday I had about 50-60% left. Did something, can't remember what, opening programs or music. And closed it. After 5 minutes I checked and battery was hot and had drained to orange level. I checked with task manager and only calendar/messaging/tunewiki/music was on. I closed all and restarted the phone, cuz it was still hot. Luckily it lasted a few hours till I got home, with very carefull use..

X1 battery a design weakness

Although there are a few threads on the X1 battery, none have addressed the real issue, in my view.
The 3.7v, 1500mAH battery specified and supplied with the X1 is underpowered for the processor (Qualcomm MSM7200A 528Mhz)
The defining symptoms for this are overheating when:
a) using wifi for over 60 minutes whilst on charge
b) using GPS for over 60 minutes whilst on charge
This 60 minute limit is somewhat arbitrary - it may be as low as 30 minutes, but within 60 minutes the overheating will definitely manifest itself. At the very least, this causes the device to behave erratically and if left unchecked may eventually cause the battery to explode.
I've tried 3 completely new batteries now - all carefully charged overnight before turning on the device in accordance with SE instruction manual. All chargers (both wall and car) have Sony Ericsson stamped all over them, as do the batteries.
I've owned these devices previously, none of which showed this problem:
HP HW6515
HP HW6910
Eten X500
HTC P3600i
HTC Polaris (still used as a totally reliable backup)
Useless to say "don't use wifi, use AS". This comment tacitly admits that my comment is accurate - ie. don't use the wifi for more than say 15 minutes, else the battery overheats
Useless to say "don't use the GPS for more than an hour" - again a tacit admission that the battery/charge system is unfit for its purpose. It has no value when I'm field mapping for 8-10 hours at a time.
My best guess is that the battery is underpowered for the system, so that when a large, constant drain on the battery such as using wifi or GPS is executed whilst charging, the balance of power within the battery is erratic. It certainly charges, but at the expense of heating the battery to unacceptable levels.
It's of interest to note that the original wall charger supplied in the box has a stamped output of 700mAH at 5V, while an SE-stamped spare wall charger I purchased has an output of 300mAH at 5V. It takes longer for the overheating to show on the lower charge rate than the higher, but eventually it does show.
Of course, some will reply "My device doesn't do that, your phone must be faulty" ... to which I ask: "What happens when you leave the device on wall or car charging and use wifi or GPS for an hour or two ?" This is a very specific question and requires a very specific and accurate answer ... not an evasive piece of generalised rhubarb.
I'm looking at two ways to resolve this serious issue, because the X1 as currently constituted is unfit for its purpose:
1) eBaying this and replacing it with an Acer DX900/X960/F900 as my experience with Eten devices have been positive (again, slagging these devices does not address the battery issue with the X1)
2) waiting in the hope that within 6 months or so, MugenBatteries or some other reliable manufacturer will produce a more powerful replacement battery that will tend to overcome the problem
I welcome constructive comments, especially those that read the post before replying. The X1 has some good points of course (eg. abundant Storage/RAM, high WVGA resolution), but the battery issue is a serious, fundamental flaw that makes the device unfit to rely on when in the field.

Perhaps it's your X1 itself? I myself and a couple of friends have X1i's and X1a's and we do not have such a problem.

saying that its a design fault that your battery warms up is a bit of a sweeping statement. WiFi is notoriously power hungry and just because that device warms up a bit doesn't necessarily mean its going to get worse and worse and explode. if you work on that principle then may be none of us should use wireless routers as they often get pretty warm too - I know mine does!
Also, even if some devices manage to give the impression of being cool, it doesn't necessarily mean they are. they might just have double walling around the batt area, etc.
If you are worried though, go ahead and sell your phone - its only you that looses out!

I've also noticed that it gets remarkably hot when charging but that's when charging from the USB port on my laptop. Haven't really considered how hot it gets when charging from the mains or in my car. Will test it out on a long journey in my car and get back to you.

My X1 works very well and has no battary problem. The durability of the battery is excellent!

If you say excellent, whats been your experience? I have to recharge my phone every second night, at the very least.

Can't say I've had any issue with hot batteries on my black X1, my mate who has a silver X1 often mentions that his battery gets very hot.

This is exactly the type of issue that arouses the partisans ...
but the only sensible reply so far was Ruudford, who states he will test his X1 on a long car trip.
That's sensible - I've tried on an 10 hour field mapping trip and in the end had to use the Polaris to maintain mapping data integrity
The exact question is: "What happens when you use wifi or GPS for an extended time (>1 hour at least) while the device is on charge ?"
I've given my results - from three (3) new batteries. These results show that the device is underpowered.
No other answer apart from Ruudford so far has actually addressed this exact issue I've pointed out.

Yes, i completely agree that the phone becomes a bit HOT when using WiFi/GPS while on charger, and really this scared me for a while.
it even get's hotter when using WiFi/GPS and charging through USB Port of a PC!
this is surly serious issue, regardless of the heat that might explode the battery (i think it's still far from that level) but this really might cause some problems internally!
we all know that using hTourch on high beam has melted the LED Base of some devices and dammaged the vibrator (not pointing to hTourch or something, with respect to the great application and the author) but heat is a really scary issue that Might (and i say MIGHT) dammage the X1 on the long run.
how to solve this?
i have no clue, maybe some electonics engineers here will give some explaination of what's going on. after all, i'm just a software developer after all :S
i agree that this must be addressed and attended by SE (replacing batteries/chargers/anything else) or "could it be a software problem?" like the software is utilizing the CPU much to decrypt the WiFi signal? or maybe wasting the CPU cycles?

have you tried to upgrade to R2A version of the ROM?
after all i noticed that in the R2A my battery lasts longer, mybe fixed some high current consumption bugs! the heat is still there but i think (not sure) it's less that before.

if i dont open the keyboard..it relly gets hot on wifi...so much so that i can smell the heat

so what would the ideal battery specs be?
my phone used to get hot but since the rom update i havent noticed it at all.

when your reception is low, your phone get hot easily when surfing internet.. More battery consumption for grab the line.

I have also noted my X1i overheat whilst charging and the GPS/WiFi is on use but considering the power usage by those two functions I assume it is the norm, especially with the X1i having a metal casing which allows the heat to flow more freely from the inside to the outside casing.
Coming back to the first post on here...if you wanted only people who have the same opinion with you to reply you could have at least made it a plain and clear. So dismissing replies that you simply don't like as non constructive is very silly.
If you ask other users about their experience in similar situations, the replies you are going to receive are bound to be different because the variables that come in to play are countless.

ianl8888, my phone has the same problem, now that you have pointed it out! Once or twice when plugged into the wall or charging via USB, I have mistakenly left the WiFi on. The back of the phone gets extremely hot. I haven't used GPS yet.

I have the same problem, about 2 weeks i just travel to the beach and near to 1:30 hr of trip, my mobile stop to work, I do soft reset, and I catch that was really hot, because I'm charging and using GPS at the same time, my mobile is X1a and I have R2A ROM version. I imagine can be touchflow, so I uninstall and leave phone like originally came, but when I return from the beach I have exactly the same problem, I can't do a trip of 2 hours using GPS. I hope some one can find a solution.

afaik, no phone have ventelation nor cooling system!
Edit : Heat-sink? Maybe but i don't think so! these things are not supposed to generate much heat! too much heat = more wasted energy = lower battery life

Coming from a Nokia 95 that I used to have to charge every 2 days after using it for GPS and WiFi I am totally impressed with my X1i that lasts 4 to 5 days with similar useage.
I remember my first phone (A motorola tac in 1995) that had a battery lasting all of 6 hours...

Well, great times you got. My phone is empty with 3 hours of GPS on.
As to the heating of battery/phone, my phone gets quite HOT outside when I use anything for a period of time (1hour) while NOT on charge.
I am using media player a lot to listen to music and after half an hour the phone becomes hard to hold in the hand because it heats up outside/backside really strong. Again, while NOT on charge, just using the battery power. And frankly that is more of concern that when on outlet power.
I had this with 2 different X1i's and both Silver!

Battery Life Problem with HD2 - Help Reqd

So I finally got rid of my iPhone 3G (jailbroken on T-Mobile), and got an HD2 instead. I've always liked Windows Mobile phones (and had most iterations), and since now there is finally some capacitative goodness on WM, I jumped on the opportunity.
And I'm regretting it already.
I'm hoping that somebody here has some suggestion that my two days of thread searching, and experimenting didn't cover.
The problem is, yay, .... the damn battery.
I left it on the charger from totally empty to completely full at 2AM. At 8AM, it was down to 85%. Ten minutes of reading e-mails, 74%. The thing is really not usable in this state.
Here are all the things I checked already:
It runs the latest T-Mobile ROM and radio (the one that just came out a few days ago).
Latest version of .NET (3.5.9).
No push e-mail, e-mail checking once per hour, weather checking once per hour.
Strong 3G coverage area, still tried out WMLongLife anyway (with no difference).
Did several cycles of full discharge, recharge.
Always check task manager, not leaving programs running.
Nothing else is set to go online - Live is disabled.
Screen brightness is set at 30%.
All charges done via wall charger.
I read every post I could find, especially fun the ones where people get 4 days of standby, and 6+ hours of heavy use. Short of loading the ARTEMIS ROM, I exhausted all options I could find. And really, it seems like people get decent performance from the stock ROM, so I'd like to stick with that for the moment.
What am I missing?
So frustrating. I can see how this sort of thing would make the average "just user" go run for the Android or Apple hills. No wonder we get stuck with restrictive babysitting technology, when others can't get their **** together. Spend $450 on a phone that can't make it through a half day of reasonable use? Argh!!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hey man, i was like you at first too. all my mates had iphones (i dislike apple in general) i didnt want one. At the time o2 (uk) didnt stock android phones and i had a sony x1 previously. So, i got the hd2 and...like you said was disapointed.
Changed the rom to a custom one here at xda (hdowners btw) which lasts 1.5 days (heavy usage)...never seems to get 2 full days when i use it alot.
installed a few different browsers (opera 9.7 and 10)
installed morphgear (with some amazing landscape skins)
fpsece (i found time crisis to be the only actual playable game)
coreplayer
and found it a awesome phone...changed my views on it. Try some custom roms and see what you think...usually you will go mad installing themes, skins, apps...just go wild and keep the ones you really like/work in a seperate folder. Then reflash and install the best only...thats how i done it and i now love this phone

wayandrs: The main thing that will help is by upgrading the ROM even if it is to stock 1.66 (the latest UK one available) then you notice a large difference and even more so with some of the cooked ones. Other things to note are the WiFi, make sure it doesn't be left on (and only turn it on if you need it) it proper drains the battery. Without knowing your habbits with your phone it is very hard to come up with decent suggestions that hasn't already been posted elsewhere.
I can safely say I get 2-3 days use out of my device but then I don't use it all that much (anymore), don't forget as it is a new toy for you, you will keep playing with it seeing what it can do, this will soon die down (as it always does) then it will be better.

there must be something wrong with your device or battery.
mine lasts for about 3-4 days while middle use. i think for such a powerful and huge device, this is more than respectable.
heavy use...mh...i would say it lasts minimal 2 days, sometimes more.
did you write a complain to t-mobile?

The battery will improve after a week or so .
Note : charging your battery the first time for only 6hours isn't much , the first time that i charged my battery i left it charging for 24 hours.
Updating to the latest ROM and Radio helps .

1) Take your phone back to where you bought it and let them deal with it. I get at least a full day with heavy use which is to be expected from a high end device with a 4.3 inch screen. I spent a few dollars on a car charger and an extra wall charger for work, sorted.
2) If you want help on these forums leave out the useless complaining about what a rotten device you have. I think I speak for many contributors of this forum when I say that these kind of posts are getting old and wearisome. You will be more likely to get polite replies with inteligent suggestions if you simply state the problem without moaning about the horrible mistake you made in being seduced into buying an HD2. I have purchased phones that I simply did not care for. I returned them.

First step: Flash a decent ROM with most of the performance/battery tricks in there already. Many of these ROMs are constructed from the best (often most battery efficient) parts of multiple ROMS.
Touch-X, Energy, Artemis, CleanEx, etc. All are excellent (though I favour Touch-X myself for a great utility/preformance/battery balance).
Second step: Flash a good Radio that works well in your area but also works well with the ROM/has decent battery life. You'll need to research this for your chosen ROM.
I use the Korean radio in UK. Good quality/signal/battery life.
Run it for a few days, charging to full and emptying the battery before recharging to full again. Do this for 3/4 days at least.
Those changes alone got me upto 2.5 days standby and 4 hours usage (thats movie playing for 4 hours with 100% backlight in a hotel room). Good for a smartphone and longer than my friends IPhones.
Other small programs like WMLongLife, adjusting down the backlight automatically, added another .5 days to standby (though not much to active use life).

I do wonder though if when someone buys a new 'Toy' that they dont hammer it to start with for the 'joy' and never think of the consequences.
I like you, no matter which phone I own, being a businessman and needing maximum performance have a charger at my bedside (the phone is my alarm) and also connect it to the car charger when driving.
I wonder if many of the people that move up from a basic Nokia phone (or similar that can last a week) realise what is involved in powering all the functions they require?
Please don't quote iPhone as it dunt do half!

I use the stock rom 1.66 from the beginning and check my mail automatically every 30 minutes. Now and then I check some websites and download cabs and use HSDPA/3G and WIFI if available. My battery is 100% in the morning and 70 percent in the evening. Not bad at all. The first 12 times I fully charched the battery during the night.
I use Bandswitch, which automatically disables my connection within 30 seconds. This is the most important and useful tip! You don't need a custom ROM to solve the battery drain issue.

And yea, to those 'get a life' and 'don't complain about Windows phones' posts, whatever. I've owned Windows Mobile phones since they first came out, and it's just frustrating that the out-of-the box usability hasn't gotten any better to this day. A new 1200 battery is 15 pounds (the official from HTC) as a backup. I personaly have bought the extended battery 2400 and it is great. The default battery doesn't last the full day for me because I use it constinuosly as mp3 player , brownsing and video player. I mean, you have options.

I'll be trying the Elegancia ROM.
That is, once I find a ROM with 2.8 SPL that works on my 1024 version of the H2, to reflash mine so I can get HSPL to work to flash.
I've always really liked Windows Mobile for its flexibility and massive base of developers ... on the flip side, I've been screwing around with this thing for several days now, trying to get a phone that can last through a day. Ahhh, the bittersweet experience that is WM.

I get at most 2 days combined cycle out of my stanard battery and i've had my phone for about 10 days. It came with the stock 1.66 rom but i've run through the tips and tweaks threads so the phone ui is faster and a bit more usable. One of those is a replacement task manager that disables smart minimize in favour of actually closing programs. I've also set the weather software to update every 3 hours because tbh you don't need it to be any more often than that. I do use the wifi alot but i do turn it off when i'm not using the phone. i have also noticed with my phone is if the wifi is connected to an access point for more than 5 minutes it will automatically disable the 3G connection and turn it back on when the wifi is disabled.
for the first couple of days i was completely discharging the battery and then charging it for about 12 hours. this seems to have been the most beneficial. i also will not put it on charge unless it really needs it.

hi, from experience, 3G medium usuage.. 4/5 a day.
If you disconect the 3G connection when not using, it will help.
And of course if you go on GSM instead, one day is not difficult..
battery killer :
1) constant 3G activity
2) Watching video. Worst, video on 3G !
3) games, especially the 3Ds ones or high on processing like the Tower simulation game.
4) bright screen
5) bluetooth

From my experience, from a fresh flash, my battery improves as I get to use it longer and longer.

take a look at your data sync like weather and stock and also check the social networking sync.

Obviously that is without SetCPU or anything and people have to have been playing with it. Even not, 30%/day not being touched is pretty good. What have you guys done for battery life? Have you noticed the "ramp up" time that is always claimed by cell phone manufacturers? Mine has sucked today but I've been beating the hell out of it. I'm going to charge it and let it stay unplugged overnight to see what the standby drain is but what is everyone doing? Have you messed with SetCPU at all?

Who cares, I'm buying 2 spare batteries from Ebay, just like I had for my G1. I can go thru all 3 batteries on my G1 while at work for 10hrs. So, I'm assuming I will get similar results.

Haha I know what you mean. That's what I love about having a removable battery. Who cares right? Swap it out and you're good.
As for my experience, the battery live has been good. The battery status bar up top is not accurate though. Similar to the reception (bar) problem how it shows no bars but you actually have great signal. I'm sure a software fix will be available soon for this. Very minor.
Here are some things you can do to improve battery life:
Remove all unnecessary widgets off your screen. I had an analog clock on there and when I removed it, I noticed better battery life just from that. No joke.
Turn off the live wallpapers. Those drain battery too.
Turn off wifi if not using it
Turn off bluetooth
Set the notifications to refresh at a longer interval instead of like every 5 mins etc...
If you're really nit picky, check "use only 2g networks..." - I personally wouldn't.
Adjust your screen to the lowest brightness. I love that it's an SAMOLED screen, because I could never get by with the lowest setting on other lcd screens.

By the way....regarding non-OEM batteries....I do notice that they are all 1500mAh (like oem), but I've always had a stigma about putting generic batteries into expensive devices.
I guess where my stigma comes from is due to my past experience with my digital camera, when I took photos of a wedding and my files got corrupted. My only explanation was because I was using a non-oem battery, because ever since that I've only used oem batteries along with that same memory card and have never had a problem since. It's been 3 years.
Since the non-oem batteries are 1500mAh, it shouldn't matter right? Now that I think about it, I do remember the camera batteries being of a higher mAh than the original battery...I know this only has to do with the capacity, but as for the voltage output, could there have been a strange surge to cause the corruption?
I know I'm just being paranoid, but just thought I'd get some input from those who know about the mechanics of batteries and the likelihood of any malfunction due to it being a cheap non-oem battery made in china.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My biggest battery drain was use wireless networks was disabled by default. All apps that tried to get my location therefore turned on GPS. One widget was bugged and would keep using GPS, killing my battery overnight. Uninstalled the widget and enabled use wireless networks and only lost a percent or two overnight. Make sure the GPS icon is not consistently on when not using Google Maps and whatnot.

This didn't really do anything for me. Under usage it definitely uses less battery than my N1 but standby SUCKS. How did the one in the store get 2+ days. I switched from GSM/CDMA Auto PRL to just GSM Auto PRL. I am switching back. WCDMA Preferred actually got me better battery on the N1.

The Amps and Volts are important, but in a battery is only a small part of it. The quality matters, the drain matter, it's max input matters, it's sensitivity to fluctuation, sensitivity to over charge... etc etc etc...
That being said, most modern devices these days have a lot of internal fail safes that should try to stop anything crazy from happening... because really the battery could have any amount of amp hours rated to it, how much it can and will output is what matters though. You could theoretically make a battery the size of a car battery for the thing that with 1500AH (aka 1,500,000mAH) would give you a retarded amount of standby time as long as it was rated about the same on everything else... although charge that thing wrong and you would have a pretty cool fireball...

an app called juice defender seems to work pretty good for me on the vibrant (ultimate juice is the paid version with all the features). I previously used it on my cliq and had good results also.
what it does is disables apn and/or wifi and you choose what intervals it comes back on. example - you could have it come on every 15 minutes for 1 minute at a time to complete necessary syncs. you can also set up night schedules etc.
I would recommend this app if you're lookin to save some battery. it also has a little widget to show you how much battery you have saved. not sure how accurate that is though. good luck!

I've used this but it is a little buggy. I also need live data. Point is results shouldn't be this inconsistent. I need to figure out what that store was doing!

I stopped caring. As long as it has enough to charge to stay on between unplugging it in the morning, and plugging it up at night, I'm golden. I've had the phone since launch, and I've only charged it up twice, so that's about two days between charges. I got it with a roughly 60% charged battery.
I use BatteryLife by Curvefish to see my battery usage.

Galaxy S/Vibrant charger is 5v @ .7A. I think I read that the N1 wall charger is 5v @ 1A. It'll charge a little faster, and will probably heat up the battery more, but it shouldn't destroy the phone. I'm sure somebody smarter will correct me, though.
