Webtop tethering with an unlimited plan. - Atrix 4G General

OK I have the tethering working fine without the laptop dock.
Once webtop launched it checks for at&t tethering plan and will not connect to the previous trick.
Anybody got a solution for me? Please?

There's like 40 threads about this, but what I do that seems to work ok is:
1) Create the custom APN using the settings provided on these forums (I don't have a link, just search, they're in about 20 different threads), activate it, reboot the phone.
2) When you launch webtop, it will hang on "Verifying AT&T account status."
3) Open up the APN settings, switch to any of the default APNs, then switch back to your custom one. In 10-15 seconds the popup should go away and you can use firefox without issue.
I have to do this maybe once a day. There's likely a timeout if you're not constantly using it where you have to follow this procedure again.

sorry if I missed it in the search, there were so many on just the regular APN trick that the one I was looking for got lost in the clutter.
Thanks for the tip, I will give it a try.

limit pie and email-retrieval to wifi?

Hello,
i was wondering if it would be possible to limit any application on my hermes to only use wifi for data-retrieval.
expect for the mms application of course...
a few days ago i flashed my hermes with wm6 from lvsw, it works fine (expect the thing, that i cannot change the keyboard-layout...) and reinstalled the SPB GPRS-Monitor. It shows 0 kb all the time, but this cannot be true.
10 minutes ago, i connected to google.com to search for some things, and, as expected, pie showed up google. the only weird thing is: after closing pie i noticed, that my wifi-connection was disabled, and my 3G/GPRS-Connection was enabled.
it doesn't matter what i try. if i disable 3g/gprs in comm-mgr. it reenables without user-interaction. and in fact: the device seems to use this connection, if its enabled (without asking me of course)
so no again my question.
ANY way to limit PIE and email-checking to only use wifi?
any way to do this without breaking my ability to receive and send mms?
greetings
garfield
ps: sorry for my, partially, bad english. i am not writing english so often atm. and therefore i'm not trained
hi there again, seems that I found a way to limit all applications to use wifi only.
in fact "my work network" is the network containing all my wifi-connections.
with this in mind I found one option in start >settings>connections>advanced. there I can select wich betworks to use t automaticallz connect to the internet. I put "my work network" in both fields. and now mz hermes complains everytime I try to check my mail with wifi disabled. when sending an mms my hermes asks for a new connection in order to send that mms.
this is all I wanted. so this thread is now "solved"
[EDIT]
Is there any way, to edit the thread-title? searched the bottom of the page, and the "thread-tools" but can't find any option anywhere...
if theres any mod online, please feel free to edit the thread-title and prefix it with [solved] or something like that. thank you

Telstra HD2 - ActiveSync/Internet/GMAIL Solutions

Hi everyone
I have searched through numerous forum post and development websites to find these answers (has taken a couple of weeks, with no help from $&% Telstra), so I thought I would put them all in one post. I don't take credit for any of the work arounds, I just figure there is a lot of individual posts without the answers in one spot.
Tip 1:
Don't use the default GMAIL settings as this doesn't allow you to actually specify to connect to 'The Internet' and is default set to Telstra Internet (was for me anyway). There is a good step by step guide on the GMAIL website - create a new acounnt but the key is to not enter gmail.com as your email address as it automatically detects the settings and masks/blocks the advanced screen. By following this, I could then have GMAIL on my WiFi with no data plan enabled (long story)
Tip 2:
Do this to configure a new Telstra Data connection as the default one can't be modified:
(link to be approved so msg me and I will send in mean time)
However make sure the 'This network uses a proxy...' part isn't checked, opposite to the guide on the above link.
Doing this actually meant my GMAIL could now connect using the DATA plan but by default used the WiFi when it was connected.
Tip 3
The ActiveSync and Exchange part is by default configured to Telstra's dedicated email plan. On my phone there was actually a PDF on the storage card about this and also a step by step guide on how to configure your ActiveSync/Exchange to connect through the normal internet, not through Telstra's plan. However, as I have seen many similar examples on the internet, following this procedure was great except the settings would not save. Changing from 'Dedicated' to 'Internet' never actually accepted.
I was determined to figure this out, so installed a registry editor. With some snooping I found enough information to be dangerous and did some searching, and found this link:
(link to be approved so msg me and I will send in mean time)
If you go to the bottom about Network Registry Settings, the key one is:
HKLM\System\ActiveSync\SyncAPN
By changing this to 0, my 'Internet' setting would save for the ActiveSync/Exchange and sure enough, connection to my exchange server was succesful.
CeRegEditor is the program I found really simple to use.
Tip 4
Install these two free applications for Data Connection management
Good for Enabling/Disabling Data Connections - DataController.CAB
I don't fully understand the full power of this one, but it is good to see what is happening and has an auto disconnect: BandSwitch.V2.8.CAB that is mentioned in the registry tips/tweaks section, tip 50 or somewhere there abouts.
Tip 5
Cookies Home Tab - sensational!!
Tip 6
Unlock the quicklinks (plenty of posts on how to do this) and also remove the non-used Telstra Home-Tabs (well I don't use them as they always have a wap redirect to m.bigpond.com)
Tip 7
If you are facebook user, check out the 'touch' version. Go to m.facebook.com and down the bottom there is a link to facebook touch
So that is about it for now, following all the above, after a hard reset worked a treat without having to install a non-telstra ROM.
Hope this helps, like I said, I don't really know all the details of the work arounds, more just posting them all in one spot for future frustrated people with the Telstra version. I am loving the phone now (also have followed other registry tips from this site).
Happy using and massive thanks to all of you who actually did figure out the solutions!
Jason
Thanks for this.
The Dedicated/Internet drop down box does work without the reg hack but it resets itself back to dedicated.
I found also that I had to make a new connection to telstra.iph for activesync to stay connected when the screen was off.
Woudl greatly appreciate if you could send me the missing details above. I have not managed to get WMDC to recognise the phone yet so can't, and not keen to yet anyway, replace the Telstra ROM.
i get "Access Denied" when i try the registry hack, anyone else come across this?
I did get that, within the Registry Editing software there is an option to unlock the registry, once you do that you can then change the settings!

Hello, I have the Telstra T9193 here in Argentina and I want to use with other internet carrier, I configured the connection and Internet is working fine but I can't check the emails....
So I think that the problem is the default Telstra connection, maybe only the ROM permit use this connection to check emails.
Could you know something about it?
Thanks
Hi Diegogleo
Which email are you trying to check? Webmail like GMAIL or Hotmail or a separate pop3 account?
If it is hotmail, the default windows live setup seems to work fine.
You have to change the settings of your email account to use 'Internet' not 'Telstra Internet' (or whatever pre-programmed data connection might exist). That way, when you are in WiFi or using your Mobile Providers Data, you can pick email up.
If it is exchange mail, you will have to do the registry edit above.

HD2 Android disabling data but not MMS

Hello, i'm new to the forums. This is my first post but i've been reserching all over and cannot find a solution to this question I have...
I've been considering buying a HTC HD2 from my friend and unlocking it to use with my AT&T sim card (the phone is currently locked to T-Mobile).
After I unlock it I am planning on installing Android 2.2 onto the HTC. My current phone is a Samsung Solstice from AT&T. I have unlimited SMS/MMS but I don't have a data plan. I was wondering once i get the HD2, unlock it, then install Android 2.2 on it, if I can disable data but I've heard if u disable data then Multimedia Messaging (MMS) doesn't work... (I cant afford a data plan and wont need to browse the web away from wifi so i'm fine without data plan.) I would REALLY like to keep MMS working fine but without using data. is there anyway i can enable MMS and not data? I would call AT&T and asked them to block all data access except MMS but i'm afraid if i tell them that i'm using a HD2 (smart phone) they'll force me to pay for data and that would not be good. can someone please help me disable/block data but continue using MMS, all help/advice is appreciated, thanks in advanced
plzzzz i would really like to know this
BUMP
As my understanding, data is use when sending and receiving mms, but you are not charged for the data because you have sms/mms plan, maybe there is limit how many kb per message, if you over that they may charge you the extra.
I'm not sure about ATT, but Tmobile if I accidently go to internet, they tell me that I don't have data plan, and ask if I want the data or something...., I just click cancel, I never been charged for the data.
I am using the HD2 on ATT, I can tell you for a fact there is no way to block data and allow MMS, MMS uses data to send picture and video msgs. Calling ATT will not help either. As long as you have not upgraded your phone thru them they cannot force you to get a data plan, if they attempt to, you can tell them you want to be put on a pay per use, if they say no, demand a supervisor explain you have a wifi and you dont want the plan, a little pushing will get you want you want.
Also ATT cannot block data and not MMS from their end either, just not possible.
Go into apn settings. If you have only one for data and mms, then edit it, and right at the end "apn type" probably says "default " or perhaps "*" or maybe "default, supl, mms "
Change that to say just "mms"
If you have two entries one will be for default, supl and will have a on off toggle, the second will be for mms and won't have a toggle. Just toggle off the data one or edit out the default in apn type.

Wireless hotspot

Hi all,
I bought the AT&T Atrix 4G as I can use it here in Australia on the Telstra network. Is there any way / hack to allow me to use the wireless hotspot feature? Would be very handy; I obviously can't sign up for an ATT account.
I installed the new update, so I can't root the phone yet.
You can get root , go to the below thread, you will need to go back to the original 1.2.6 SBF, just follow the directions from the thread below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
You shouldn't need root to enable this feature. All you need is to add a Custom APN. There's several threads on the subject. The link below is the thread that has the instructions for creating the Custom APN. I also found some thread where users with the latest update have no issues with this as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961217&highlight=wireless+apn
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009195&highlight=wireless+apn
Try searching the Atrix 4G General Forum for "wireless APN" for more information. I hope that helps
I read somewhere that ATT is going to crack down on this. I'll see if I can find it.
I know this isn't an iphone but I'm sure it's the same thing on their end.
http://osxdaily.com/2011/03/17/att-cracking-down-on-unofficial-iphone-tethering-mywi-users/
i use my atirx in Australia on Telstra as well and i lost my hotpost ability with the ATO update to .57 now i just get the msg saying my account isnt setup of hotpot. curse AT&t's black heart
I'm using the Atrix on AU vodafone's 850MHz network. also updated and also getting the message saying I need to update my AT&T account. :/
I wanna know it too. I´m in Brazil, with TIM network and i can´t tether because of at&t...
had the same problem after the update, im in canada. edit your APN settings to add "default, tether" under APN type.
No luck with that Fido. i tried it with a couple of different apn's that give me a data connection and im getting the same msg. Feels like its deeper than an APN combo

are you sure you entered it right? i got that att message too before i added the apn type...the mod to get mobile hotspot to work is just using the right apn. heres how i set up my apn set up, i only fill out two things.
APN = internet.fido.ca
then go all the way to the last option
APN Type = default,tether
also double check that the lock icon next to your apn is unlocked.
fido ur right i just needed to add default, tether to my apn type.
u had a space in ur original post throw me off a bit but i have it working now hope this works for every one else to.
How do I do this on ATT?
Just add a custom apn it works fine on att, I used it yesterday

Hi everybody.
Had the same problem like most of you. I´m in Spain with vodafone and after updating I couldn´t use my atrix as hotspot anymore so googling a bit I found this app.: android-wifi-tether.
After installing the app you get this message:
No Access Control!
Sorry but your kernel does not have all necessary features for the Access Control feature of this application. Access control will be disabled
This is the only issue I found, but the rest works great for me.

Locked Verizon APN Settings

Good Evening All, (In the East Coast anyway)
I have done a lot of searching in XDA and Google and I can't seem to find too much detail aside from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935144
My question is specifically for the Verizon Retail Samsung Galaxy S5. Since we are rooted, is it possible to navigate to where the APN settings are stored so changes can be made to them despite the fact that the OS locks us out of it? I read that if you use a non Verizon SIM card, the APN settings can be altered as needed.
Does anybody know what in the OS prevents us from changing the APN settings or know if there is some kind of way to force the OS to allow us to change the APN settings? My main goal was to edit the "APN Protocol" settings to force it to use IPv4 instead of allowing the network to use either or. Applications such as Opera Max, due to the Kitkat VPN bug, won't work unless the mobile data connection is an IPv4 address.
Edit: May found found my answer / solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...ates when the APN settings may be configured?
also need help with this issue i have tried everything
My fix for APN Settings SM-G900V [Verizon Galaxy S5]
Okay guys,
I figured I should post this since I can't find anything thing else online solving this issue.
It took me a couple hours of digging around and teaching myself some basic android stuff but I got APN edit access on my Verizon Galaxy S5 G900V APN settings. First, I wanted access because I switched to straight talk and found I wasn't receiving MMS's. But... Verizon locks access to APN's. I won't tell you the story of how I figured it out, I will just tell you what I did and let you make the decision to do it yourself or not AT YOUR OWN RISK.
1) Your phone must be rooted... look around online and choose your own method- it just needs to be rooted. (can't post a link, sorry)
2) install: Build Prop Editor and APN Settings apps from the App store
-----Build Prop Editor allows you to change system values
-----APN Settings is a menu shortcut that you'll need
3) From another forum, I got this information:
** This forum is written for a different phone (Note3) and so are the codes... but they should work long enough to create an APN...
a)Once [build prop editor] is installed find and open Build Prop Editor
b)Hit the menu button and select Edit
c)Scroll to the bottom of screen and add the following lines
#Code:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
d)Hit the save button at the top right hand corner of the screen (looks like a floppy disk)
e)Once this is done saving restart the phone
----This part is where it gets weird. Adding the codes in build.prop creates menu issues so you can't navigate to the APN menu
4) open the app that you downloaded in step 2 (APN Settings), that will bypass the menu.
5) determine the APN you need to create and create it (depends on your provider, do some research) (again, can't post url links)
6) go back to build.prop.editor and delete the lines that you added in step 3 and reboot the phone
7) navigate to your APN settings via the menu, the APN you created will not be visible but it will still be there. Select the Verizon APN so you can connect your phone to 3G or 4G data.
8) Try MMS or group texts
That should be it... If you don't get MMS's go through the process again and try another APN (you may have the wrong one) or you can delete all but the factory APN's to return your phone to the way it used to be.
This worked for me and I hope it works for you too.
P.S. sorry this is a bit late in all the forums
Hello. I was able to make all the changes listed above. I am running into a problem when I change the mnc to my provider straight talk. Basically whatever apn I was attempting to modify is deleted, and I run I to the same problem when creating new apns. I can enter a name and change the apn but that's it. If I make any other changes the apn is no longer in my list.
Thanks,

Hey. So I am not too sure why you don't have permissions to edit apn settings. These are the apn settings Iaccessed and used to get it working on mine... then it is hidden when deleting the build prop codes.
Name
APN
MMSC
MMS Proxy
MMS Port
APN Type
If you don't have access to create a new APN and change those settings following my method, I don't know what to say... Is your phone model a SM-G900V running android 4.4.4? - that's what mine is.
The only other thing I could think is maybe the kernel version when you rooted your phone. I have 3.4.0 and used towelroot and oden to flash it.
Also, I am using Textra as my messaging application and manually configure the APN in those settings to the same one I created.
Hate bumping old threads, but I feel it's relevant in this case. I used the above method to successfully edit the APN and regain internet access and get MMS. However, if I go to Settings>More Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, there are none listed at all. I am not getting 4G signal on my SM-G900V running android 4.4.2.
Is there a way to get the actual vzwinternet apn to appear in that menu?

Any updated fixes for this that don't mess with the APN menu? Running Deodexed Optimal ROM and just got my S5 activated on ST. I have the same problem as you with an LG G4 from Verizon on straighttalk. I had ST fix their end to get my data working. They have the Verizon APN settings saved on their server for your phone but their settings have to match your settings. Since you cannot add/edit your APN they have to delete their settings and let it pull from your phone. Verizon lets them use certain APNs for their side of the network, that is why their settings are different than your phone and why they will strongly ask you to update them (even though you cannot). I found this information out because their APN settings got updated when my service renewed. I'm not sure if this will be a problem on each renew or if Verizon/ST will work that out.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 g900v. I am currently using Straight Talk BYOP program. I am having some issues with service and having 3g instead of 4g. It is a 4g capable phone. I am trying to get into the APN settings to change it up to Straight Talks Information, but it is Locked (greyed) out. Is their any way to access this? I think if you search you can find info on XDA about enabling all radios for your phone. if its rooted you can try an apk like signal booster or one of those. They have advanced settings that let you select CDMA/GSM/LTE and prioritize your connection.
If you are rooted you can use coded in the dialer to access those same settings and change your connection prefs.
If I had a link I would share.

I ended up just having to call Straight Talk and they did something on their end that took effect at or around midnight that night. Problem is I had to call them again the following month because after refilling my airtime a day before cutoff I lost my data(which is weird because the new card went in to my reserve). They did something on their end that immediately took effect after a reboot of my device. I'm hoping I don't have to do this every time I refill.
Straight Talk only works for 1 month at time

I have the same problem. I have 2 Verizon Samsung S5 that I have transferred to Straight Talk. Every month for the past 4 months I lose my data signal (calls work fine) . I have to call ST tech support and spend between 15 - 45 minutes (depending on how knowledgeable the tech person is) to get it reset so it works. Each phone does this on a different day so I have to do this twice a month. :crying:
They reset the provisioning on their end. Then I power off and reboot and it works for another month. Does anyone know what I have to set the APN to to fix this problem?
When I used the method in this thread and take the lines out of the build.prop, Only Verizon Internet shows under the APN. Do I need to add a ST APN and not comment out the lines?
I know this is old, but I can't find any way to edit apn settings for my nougat phone on straight talk through verizon towers. Nothing works, even with root.

If I make any other changes the apn is no longer in my list.
I have a galaxy j3 sm-j337vpp
Thanks,
I know this is really old, but if someone is searching for the unable to edit APN for a Verzion phone, I have a fix.
Connect the phone for ADB debugging. Then open ADB shell and use the command:
am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
It won't let you edit the current one or list, but you can add a new one now, and use it. Just reboot the phone after the new APN is in place.
