Hello, i'm new to the forums. This is my first post but i've been reserching all over and cannot find a solution to this question I have...
I've been considering buying a HTC HD2 from my friend and unlocking it to use with my AT&T sim card (the phone is currently locked to T-Mobile).
After I unlock it I am planning on installing Android 2.2 onto the HTC. My current phone is a Samsung Solstice from AT&T. I have unlimited SMS/MMS but I don't have a data plan. I was wondering once i get the HD2, unlock it, then install Android 2.2 on it, if I can disable data but I've heard if u disable data then Multimedia Messaging (MMS) doesn't work... (I cant afford a data plan and wont need to browse the web away from wifi so i'm fine without data plan.) I would REALLY like to keep MMS working fine but without using data. is there anyway i can enable MMS and not data? I would call AT&T and asked them to block all data access except MMS but i'm afraid if i tell them that i'm using a HD2 (smart phone) they'll force me to pay for data and that would not be good. can someone please help me disable/block data but continue using MMS, all help/advice is appreciated, thanks in advanced
plzzzz i would really like to know this

As my understanding, data is use when sending and receiving mms, but you are not charged for the data because you have sms/mms plan, maybe there is limit how many kb per message, if you over that they may charge you the extra.
I'm not sure about ATT, but Tmobile if I accidently go to internet, they tell me that I don't have data plan, and ask if I want the data or something...., I just click cancel, I never been charged for the data.
I am using the HD2 on ATT, I can tell you for a fact there is no way to block data and allow MMS, MMS uses data to send picture and video msgs. Calling ATT will not help either. As long as you have not upgraded your phone thru them they cannot force you to get a data plan, if they attempt to, you can tell them you want to be put on a pay per use, if they say no, demand a supervisor explain you have a wifi and you dont want the plan, a little pushing will get you want you want.
Also ATT cannot block data and not MMS from their end either, just not possible.
Go into apn settings. If you have only one for data and mms, then edit it, and right at the end "apn type" probably says "default " or perhaps "*" or maybe "default, supl, mms "
Change that to say just "mms"
If you have two entries one will be for default, supl and will have a on off toggle, the second will be for mms and won't have a toggle. Just toggle off the data one or edit out the default in apn type.

Hi,
I have a small problem, when i receive an mms with the mobile data off and after i put it on the message just says "Transfering" and i'm never able to see it?
Any fix ? Without being all day with data on..
Thanks
same for me, in italy with vodafone..
Guess this is the same everywhere ....
I have another problem with the mms app ... every time i recive a mms with a photo taken from a iPhone and i want to view it it FC`s
Tho i can recive & view pisc from any other device
Same here in slovenia simobil (vodafone) tried different apn setting like emptying everything except apn url and with proxy, username password...still doesn't work. Says sending/reciving.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Are you using the power butoon to turn data off? It kills data and mms needs data so you can't get it (might work with wlan on tho). Download something like apndroid wich has keep mms option from market.
Have you all checked your APN settings? Some widgets can cause them to be lost, I had this problem.
1. you need apn mms settings to be correct. send a mms to yourself to confirm this. for some reason also on my network (optus australia), apparently you need to send an mms to yourself to activate mms, before other people can mms you 0_0 (according to tech support)
2. for some reason if mms apn is off or disconnected, and you get an mms, when u reactivate mms data, it will be stuck at "downloading".
It seems impossible to recover this kind of MMS... Do other phones allow delayed MMS??? (This is my first smartphone, i don't get many mms)
To be safe, I use apn onoff by curvefish, leaving the option "MMS on". This way, when I get an mms, it automatically turns data on to recieve the message.
I am ultra careful, cause MMS is usually a "special" msg ie. from my friends (girls) lol...
Is there any way to delete the APN that came with the DVP? Even though I can add a new APN, I don’t want any records of the stock APN that came with the phone. I want to erase it completely!

I read someplace....Twitter...Facebook?? MS Answers....sorry I don't remember exactly, but the APN is locked in, per OEM/Mobile Operator. I heard that an unlocked phone will require the equiv of a Connection Setup to set all settings. You can manually enter an APN into the device...well ...some devices....but still not have the MMS or SMS settings. I know the HTC devices come with a connection setup, but the Samsung and LGE devices do not. I guess the Dell does not either. So running any of those phones unlocked on a different Network....may cause some problems with the extended services.
With the stock APN, i believe tmobile can detect if you're abusing their grandfather data plan.
What do you think?
Lets get rid of that stock APN.!
now that my phone is running CM7...
is there any way to disable data but still be able to send/receive mms?
prior to flashing to CM7, when i was on stock 2.3.4, i was able to get it to where "data" is always on but only to receive mms.. apps like foursquare, fb, etc didnt work. never started using data when i went out of wifi.. bad part about this was i couldnt send mms.. all i remember doing was disabling data in the hidden menu, and changing the APN.. iirc, the "spot where it says "data enabled", that was checked..
now that i have flashed to cm7, i disabled data in the hidden menu, changed the APN, but it still uses data for everything like foursquare, fb, etc once i have data turned on in settings, everything goes on data and starts using it.. foursquare gets updates, etc.. yah i can send and receive mms too but what the heck happened D:
so now im on CM7, is tehre something that can disable data without disabling mms? i understand some people say u need data to send n receive mms but eh
using T-mobile with no data plan.
tried finding that data toggle widget someone had suggested in the past but cant find it.
-------------------
tried disabling data on *#*#4636#*#*, none of the APN's worked.... couldnt get mms or go online
after enabling data... apn's grabbed data.. D:
so back to using the mms.voicestream.com one... and just having data disabled for now... enabling it when i see a mms coming in...
unless u guys have better ideas
Have you tried using a firewall?
You don't need a data plan to send/received MMS.
You do need to have the correct APN setup.
Name: MMS
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC:http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC:310
MNC:260
APN type:mms
everything else blank (not set).
is that the only apn i put in there or which ones do i have in there ?
hmm looks like it may be working.. no internet access.. can receive mms... no response on sending yet.

Tell me what you see.
and to confirmed from you 1st post, you do NOT have a data plan correct?
i did what u told me and created a new APN with the info u gave.
thats the only APN in there..
yes, no data plan.
i think it works ! thx

That's good. Also if you haven't done it.
Go into the stock messaging app.
Settings>Custom User-Agent>Chose Custom>Android-Mms/2.0
or chose Nokia N95
this way your incoming MMS doesn't get resize to thumbnail size
good to know ! dunoe what most of these customization stuff does on cm7 ahhahaha anything else ud like to suggest? (even if it doesnt pertain to messaging) xD
Hi there!
On CM7 and Oxygen there is no way to send MMS without turning ON "Data enabled" option. If you have send MMS before you have turned "Data enabled" to ON it is just says "Sending..." and it cannot send MMS until you delete and rewrite MMS. ( It's just pisses me off. Anyone has a solution for this?
MIUI has a simple solution. It send MMS even when you turn "Data enabled" OFF.
Is there a way to accomplish this on CM7 or Oxygen?
Brgds,

Same at me. I would appriciate if this could solved.

Who the hack is "everyone" ... i didn't find anyone complains about it thus i started this thread
I am using MIUI but also i want to try all other good ROM's out there. It is such pity that this functionality isn't built-in in CM7 and Oxygen
"everyone" means no one can send MMS in Oxygen and CM7 without Enabling Data.
Was this the “hack” clear to you or I need to make a drawing out of it?
And if you read more and more carefully you will realise that many other people complain about the same.
This is not a bug or an issue in these roms, is just how they are!!!!

I have searched the forum but didn't find "anyone" complaining about this "feature"
The Hack
Looks like you didn't search very well.
For instance I complained a LOT and many times. And there’s also others.
But why you are so bother about reading other peoples complains? This won't make MMS work the way you want now.
This is one of the big reasons I don’t use those roms!
If this is really important to you, use other rom.

I think there aren't any other threads such as yours so not to worry about this.
This issue was discussed in the respective rom threads.
If you look there you will find it
If your network uses a separate APN for data and mms you can disable the data APN and leave the mms one active. There are lots of apps that can do this in the market, APNdroid is one but there are plenty of others,
You can do it manually as well by going to Settings => Wireless & Networks => Mobile Networks => Access Point Names. Select the data APN and mangle the APN field, say by adding a "-" to the front of it. This will prevent your phone from using any data even when data is enabled.
If your network provider uses a single APN for both data and mms then I do not know what you can do. You could maybe try splitting the settings and put just the mms setting into a new APN.
This is one Idea. But you will also be grabbing your balls with data enable on your conscience and waiting for the bill in the end of the month....
This procedure should be automatic not manually and this is why it’s wrong.
Automatic is how it is from stock why the hell make it the other way around. It makes no sense, unless the devs think everyone as free data plans....

I do have splitted setting for MMS. One APN is for INTERENT other is for MMS. Idea is simple i don't want to enable "Data enable" setting.

You can see things this way:
If these Dev's were building official roms they wouldn't be allowed to build it this this way as wouldn't be legal.
MMS its a data service but completely different than internet data.
In my network plan, every time I enable data and I start using it costs me €1,15/day (10MB included). If I exceed the 10MB each additional MB cost 16cents.
Each MMS I SEND costs me 38cents.
Well, if to send AND RECEIVE MMS I have to enable data each MMS will cost much more than €1.
After this explantation, the obligation of enabling data to use MMS service still makes any sense to you???
Does not need to be a genius to understand this.
Even it is, why if making a rom you change the stock settings for the worst?

It will make sense to me if devs of CM7 or Oxygen have benefits from Telecom providers ... but i guess they don't. So please stop asking me if it is make sens or not ... these are CUSTOM ROM's anyway. Sure it make sens to us end users.

For normal and sane people this kind of behavior doesn’t make sense at all.
So, yes you are correct, “sense” is not the correct word to define what is correct from what isn’t… lololl

Just one more vote for this non sense situation!
Mesnati is bullshiting about "just saying for saying"... but is doing exactly that.
If MMS run trough a different APN, not related with data plan apn... it is absolutely simple OS that MMS comute automatic via MMS APN.
That is obvious and shouldnd't be questionable, only if you want to discuss peanuts you fill this forum with garbage.
Other option, is that you have a unlimited data plan so you don't care about this, but that is your own question, does not have to apply to other "mortals" that have to pay for data usage and MMS usage.
Druida69 has exactly the same problem has me... If I pay 5Eur for 100MB of Data and pay 0,3Eur for each MMS, do you want me to explain you the question around this situation ?!?!? You can't get there ???
Best regards,

You don't get it ... i don't want to have this "Data enable" or "mobile data" ENABLED. It waste battery. So please don't be jealous if you don't have data unlimited data plan. Now i can understand why is that "feature" so obvious to you. For me it is not. If i want to send MMS i know that i will pay that's obvious. But why you also have to manually enable "Data enable" ??? That's what is bothering me!
No... you don't get it.
I'm not jealous, I simply don't say that our problem is stupid... just because I don't have it. If you have unlimited data plan, this is not your problem... so... don't fill the forum with garbage about nothing!
The problem, from the beggining is that, with Oxygen or CM7, to send MMS you have to activade Mobile Data. If you read the posts instead of just boring other users with your "literature" you would understood that from the start.
With original ROM we don't have to activate Mobile Data for MMS. With MIUI we don't have to activate Mobile Data for MMS.
With Oxygen or CM7, to send MMS we have to activate Mobile Data and send MMS trough that APN.
It does not make sense, just that.

Does any one know how to make the MMS work?
I dont see a place to input the info on the straight talk activation instructions.
MMSC
MMS Proxy
MMS Port
I was only able to find the place to input the APN (att.mvno) doing this made the internet work.
So when I get a pic mail my phone shows me the text from it and tries to download it. But it fails. says Invalid MSISDN Number Received.
SMS works fine.
Sprint Touch Pro 2 TP2 Windows mobile 6.5. I have the Wall mart straight talk $15 sim card (bring your own phone) plan. I put it in the sim card slot on my Sprint TP2 and went through the steps to enable the phone to use GSM towers in the states. Calling works. But internet is only on EDGE (slower then sprints 1X) I think that is all the phone is capable of with the GSM raido it contains.
I searched the registry and found something like Http://mms.sprintmms.com changed it to http://mmsc.cingular.com and that did not work.
I dialed ##778# and hit view. there is nothing in there that looked related.
I went to start, settings, connections, connections, manage existing connections, and deleted what was there and maid a new one called Data and put att.mvno as the Access point name but there is no place to enter the mms settings in there.
I have searched google for hours and days. I give up. Some one out there has got to know the answer. Can you help?

In your MMS app, go to menu>MMS options>servers>add new server. If it's greyed out you have to do a reg edit in HKLM>Software>ArcSoft>MUI and look for "enable server edit" and change the DWORD to "1" After you change that, go back to the MMS options and "add new server" with the following data:
Server - Straight Talk MMS
Gateway - 66.209.11.33
URL - http://mmsc.cingular.com
Port - 80
Connect Via - Whatever you named your connection previously.
When you're done make sure you set that as your default server. I'm doing this from memory so I may have missed a step or the reg edit key may be named differently on the Sprint TP2. BTW, the Sprint and Verizon TP2 only supports EDGE speeds on the AT&T bands. 3G is for the AWS (1700) band like T-Mobile, HTC really screwed the pooch on that one.
Nice thank you very much for your help. My mms works now. I cant believe I did not think to check in my mms program for the place to enter the settings.
I did have to change the registry value to a 1 to gain access to the greyed out button. It was in HKLM>Software>ArcSoft>Arcsoft MMS UA>Config>UI>
Now if I can only get the mms and the sms time to be correct. Do you know any thing about that? My friend can be sitting next to me and send me a sms that I get instantly but the incoming time on the message shows totally wrong. It was like this when I was on Sprints service also. I flashed stock 6.1 and 6.5 and neither fixed it. I have Since or Touch Flow or what ever its called turned off. Just running basic home screen Spb Pocket plus 4.1.0, Spb Phone Suite 1.3.1, Garmin, Pocket shield and some other basic programs. I have a faint memory that out of the box this was not a problem. It may have been after I flashed and installed that it started. But then why did flashing back to stock not fix it? I have never flashed anything other then stock.

So you say that I can get 3G if I get the Wallmart Straight Talk sim card that uses Tmobile? Wow I will try that. My brother just ordered one from Straight talk for his T mobile branded TP2. See, I didn't buy the Walmart ST SIM. I went straight to their website (straighttalkgsm.com) and got an AT&T SIM. I know you have the choice of T-Mobile or AT&T but I think it depends on the area code you will be using. As for the time stamp issue, that sounds more like a software bug than a carrier issue. Just for ****s and giggles, did you enter the proxy info in your connections? I know when I use the proxy info, mobilespeedtest.com reports my ISP as AT&T-Cingular, when I go without the proxy it lists my ISP as "shared block". Whatever that means. Google Maps also locates me faster when I have the proxy info entered. Of course, when I have to tether, I un-check proxy settings. BTW, you didn't hear that from me.

Wow checking the proxy box and putting in 66.209.11.33 does change my results from Shared IP Block to At&t. And it is 4 times faster.
I was getting a consistent download speed of only 77 Kbps and 1.1 Latency
Now I get 295 down and 2.1 Latency.
Im testing some data intensive websights now. Ok they are much faster now. All most as fast as my week reception sprint EVDO revA phone tethered to my router. The only thing sprint has over ST is that sprint does not throttle me until 30 gigs. And I have read that with the AT&T ST sim people are not getting away with much. DSL just came to my part of the jungle so I got rid of my sprint plan. I have no need to tether so much now.
I edited out my confusion from the above posts. It looks like I will never have 3g on the t-mobile or AT&T sim card on my TP2. Here is a link to some supportive reading about why 3G will not work. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561656
One more thing I can send and receive Hotmail but cant send and receive Yahoo. When I try it says "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings. Settings". Then If I uncheck proxy it works but then I have to go back later to re check and put in 66.209.11.33 to get my faster speed back. Why can Hotmail do it but Yahoo can not?
I had the same problem and all I did was flash a new radio which helped with signal.
Just for fun I put a T-mobile sim card from T-mobile in my TP2. My Edge internet was very slow. So put in the proxy that Straight talk gives there users with T-mobile sims and it was still very slow. Super slow compared to using the Att proxy with the ATT ST sim in my TP2.
One interesting thing I noticed is that this sim had many more electrical contact points on it and it automatically set up the correct MMS setting for me. In comparison the ST sim card had lass contact points and I had to enter the MMS manually my self.
This TP2 Im using this week is bone stock out of the box and it is not handling daylight savings time correctly when putting the time stamp on the sms. I bet there are many good threads about fixing this I have not yet searched.

So this was an easy fix. I click on my sms program. click menu, tools, options, click on my yahoo account, edit account setup, next, next, next, next, advanced server settings. So in here is where i had it wrong. It was on my old internet settings so I changed "network connection" to "internet" that way it will even sync my email using wifi if its on and has internet, instead of needlessly requiring to dial up over the cell data connection.
I tryed this change in the MMS settings also but my MMS wont send so I had to change it back to the cellular data connection.
