[Q] Reception isuue (no signal) with NAND Android on HD2 - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Well Ive switched several different ROMs, radios, and kernels so far, and I'm still getting poor reception issues. I've noticed when I push a button to turn the screen on from sleep mode it will say 'no signal' real quick then it goes away. But Ive also noticed that sometimes even with 'no signal' I can still make & receive calls but not other times So far this is the last issue I need to figure out with android for my hd2, I cant afford to be missing calls. Ive checked the battery usage info, and cell standby says my time without signal is usually between 50 and 75% help please

There is a 13 page thread on this with so far new resolution the only sure fire fix right now is leave the phone in 2G or Edge and you will stay continually connected, not a great fix but it keeps the phone locked onto the network

Time without signal %

Has anyone noticed and/or found anything else that may help this??
I have seen that you can go into the *#*#4636#*#* menu and change to "cdma only" which "seemed" to help, but in fact it did not really do much.
Also coming from the eris we had the "airplane mode trick" which did seem to help on that device.. this involved literally just putting the phone in airplane mode, plug in charger, sleep, then wake the phone back up and after checking it from time to time the time without signal was usually below 2 or 3% for me (on the eris).
The incredible is still showing poor numbers with both of those done and my g/f's eris showing 0% time without signal in the same room, while my incredible shows 30%.
Also noted, I saw somewhere around here that htc in fact admitted a problem with the radio signal and hoped to correct it with an update, so maybe we just have to live with this as it is for now.
Also on a side note, the eris and incredible are both showing the same signal strength side-by-side, which someone suggested that the problem may be that the radio is designed to go into a low power mode occasionally which could also be the culprit.
any thoughts?

Thats what the phone was using when I received it, I suppose it looks like an update is necessary to fix this issue. Like I said, my eris never read over 5% (even in the worst signal areas I was in), ever. Definitely seems to be a real issue, and I'm sure that battery life will improve when this is fixed.
On the eris, if I was using a rom that needed the "airplane mode trick" as I stated in my first post, the time without signal was usually from 40 to 50% and battery life was awful. As soon as the time without signal dropped the battery life was back to normal
You can also download a different .prl file and install it. I made an Alltel , verizon hybrid one that works great for me. Coloradoprl.com has a lot to try

[Q] Reception, Lock screen and SMS limit...?

I'm surprised I haven't seen a thread on here about reception issues. My 3G goes in and out , from 4 bars to 1 and even zero bars at times while the phone is staying in the exact spot. does anyone thing this is a hardware or software issue?
The lock screen totally lags. it's almost ridiculous I have about 4 frames for the entire animation of it sliding left to right
I can't figure out a way to make the SMS limit per conversation over 1000. The phone keeps deleting my texts =( Is there a way around this I'm missing ...?
Love the phone it just seems like there's a few REALLY silly stupid problems with it .
Edit:
My voice search just will not search my contacts... I noticed it will only find contacts which are synced with Google, however even though i have my options to sync my contacts. i still only have 5/173 of my contacts synced.
For some silly reason there is ONE person ( that i know of) who's facebook profile was not downloaded into my phonebook . I only care for the picture ID .. but it's odd every one else (whom i know of) was downloaded other than him, spoke to him there's nothing special about his profile.
Edit 2:
Has anyone noticed a clicking sound which sometimes happens whenever the camera is opened? It sounds as if something near the camera is physically clicking
any other droid 2 owners have these problems?
You're totally right about the 3G going in and out. I'm in my basement and when I'm on a call, it actually drops. Last night I called my g/f back from my house phone, and the bars jumped from 1 back to 4. Sometimes I get that 1X instead of 3G.
The phone totally has potential, I just hope a root comes out soon and we have a lot of room to play with. I came off the Motorola Cliq to the Droid 2 and honestly, even with my Cliq rooted, it seems way superior to the quality I'm getting on the Droid 2.
Let alone that the service provider is Verizon, the service should be the best... The only good thing I can say about the phone is that I'm able to watch flash videos off the web, and the new games coming out are actually playable without lag. Other than that, Tethering without root is like having PDAnet on my phone. I use EasyTether right now and it's not much faster that PDAnet. I also hope when root drops, j_r0dd from modmymobile gets his hands on it, I missed my white on black theme and I prefer the Droid X bootanimation on my start up.
have you tried the manual update to 2.2.20? I experienced the signal bug having my reception drop to 1x while it was 3g a minute before and the phone wasn't moved, but after i did the manual update to 2.2.20 by going to system -> software update i haven't seen it since.
With the unlock screen, I at first noticed lag but after reading motorolas recommendations on how a smartphone is like a computer and it should be shut off / rebooted occasionally, i did shut down a couple times and the phone is very smooth now and the unlock animation is perfect.
try shutting down the phone and unplugging the battery for a little and then put the battery back in and let it boot up. I believe the phone uses some kind of cache system that loads up frequently used items on startup, maybe that is why its smooth now.

The update did nothing for me =/... I've rebooted countless times, still nothing , the next thing that really aggravates is the text message limit... smart phones are supposed to have practically unlimited sms/phone book storage. I still can't find a way around it .
Biggest problems are the reception issues, considering it's most probably a hardware issue and no update will fix it=(

I don't know what to say, it was laggy when i first got the phone and after a few shutdowns and restarts over a couple days and a shutdown battery pull for 10 minutes and a reboot and its been perfect ever since. seems like you don't know what your doing.
Bull****. The slider to answer calls is smooth. The lockscreen is not and rebooting it does not fix it. Post a video so I can believe you. I even reset the phone and it didn't help.

I've had my Droid 2 since the release day, my first Verizon phone. I have to agree with the lock screen lag, but I have noticed something interesting with the reception issues. I'm new to verizon so I don't know if this happens with other verizon android phones but when I first wake the phone up from sleep I have one to no bars then 5-10 seconds later I usually have 4-5 bars. It seems as if the cdma radio/software goes into a type of power save mode durring sleep to save on battery power. If this is the case I can imagine the issue could be something to do the the power save mode hanging when the system wakes up, also power save mode could be a little too sensitive.
Now my inferences are completely unfounded in any knowledge other than my observations, and some basic knowledge of porting android to my old Att Tilt. If there is someone out there who knows more please correct me as I would love to stand corrected.

Yup same here, the slider to answer calls is fine. I've come to a conclusion its just a buggy OS moto prepared quickly. Let's hope for a real update soon.

My 3G as of now seems to have fixed itself this morning . Has this happened for anyone else ?
after doing the 2.20 update my signal problems were all fixed and the phone works increible!!!
yes there is a little clicking sound when you go to the camera. If you look into the camera lends as you open the camera app you can see it sorta move a tiny bit so there might be some protectivething over the camera lens somewhere inside there but that is just a guess.

your asking for a lot right now. I'm not 100% sure what yours looks like but my animation at first was choppy. I noticed it the first couple times I used my phone. However after a few shutdowns and battery pulls the lock screen seems to be pretty smooth and it follows my finger with no lag.
I have also removed all the Motorola widgets from my home screens, not sure if that had something to do with it.
The 2.2.0 update did nothing whatsoever to fix my signal issues. Still getting wide variations in coverage and signal (1bar 1x RTT to 1 bar 3g to 3-4 bars 3g all from the same spot in multiple areas)
Have you tried using another launcher like launcher pro, it fixed the lag with my unlock screen, I think the blur uses up too much memory.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
The update did nothing to fix my signal issues. I don't have a problem with lag except in the gallery.
I called customer server to complain about the reception problems. The rep I talked to said Verizon is aware of the reception problems, but they aren't sure if it's the phone or the network.
He said there are other people in my area complaining of reception problems that don't have the Droid 2. He also mentioned something about areas that were mostly Alltel that are having problems. He did something on his end that is suppose to block some kind of signal having to do with Alltel and had me run the PRL update again, he said it could take up to 2 days for me to notice a difference if that was the problem.
I was also told to log each dropped call by dialing ### send.
I noticed something odd, yesterday I did a factory reset, after rooting. When I started to set everthing up I turned off the battery manager in settings, and since then it appears if all my reception issues have disappeared.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Is that something you can configure after a factory reset without root?
Yeah, if you go to settings, battery manager, battery mode, and set it to performance. Let me know if you notice anything different.

3G only shows and lights up if data transfer is occurring or if you have no 1X signal. The signal bars jump because the radio is not always transferring data (over 3G) and therefore you see it grab the signal (0-1 bars) then get full signal (3-4 bars depending on coverage of course) and once finished, bye bye.
This saves you battery. It is truly a SMARTphone. It also keeps bandwidth available to those also using a Motorola D2 and wondering the same thing.

I noticed this as well. Could be too much going on since you just turned your screen back on and apps are trying to update for you. Kind of like how you quickly pull your pants back up as your g/f is walking in the door and you act like nothing happened, but you were totally going to town.

[Q] my G2 loses service, restart brings it back

hey everyone
so my G2, which I absolutely love, has been having a problem lately. in the first week it happened maybe once and i didn't think much of it, but since Friday it's happened like 8 times now. I'll be sitting there with my G2 and all the sudden I have no service whatsoever. Just an x on the signal strength indicator. 1 or 2 times it has come back after a minute or two, but the other times I had to turn the phone off and back on. the weird part is I'm not moving at all, totally sitting still, but when it comes back on I have FULL bars with HSPA+. so it's not like I walked into an area that didn't get good reception.
any idea what's going on? i looked around but didn't see other people having this issue. any ideas?
thanks
alright well at least i'm not alone. i remember that rumored OTA update was supposed to have some radio bugfixes. maybe when the real OTA update comes it will have something to fix this. i hope so.
I have been trying to diagnose this issue on my phone too.
By any chance, do either of you have your BT on at the time?
Happens to mine as described and I have never turned on bluetooth. However this would also happen to my G1 so I think its a network thing personally.
Yeah, it definitely is. I have 2 areas that it happens in, both are while I am in my car and I have BT on in my car. When I ran it without BT, did not happen.
I have found that when I am in those area's, turning off 3G stops it entirely, even with BT on, so when in my car, I set edge and still use my BT and problem is gone.
I hope this is temporary and an OTA can fix the handoff from 3G to Edge and back better so that I can stop this, but this works well enough.
Mine has done that also, maybe once a week for the past 3 weeks.
Judging by the other problems you can have Id say this one isnt that bad. Especially if it only happens once a week haha. This is the only problem I have with my phone.
no bluetooth...
no no bluetooth on, i never do actually... but also my G1 never did this, which makes me think it's NOT a network thing, but I don't know.
also I'm sure this is just coincidence but it almost always happens when my girlfriend is nearby with her T-Mobile Blackberry Curve. i know it wouldn't make any sense, but she's sitting there on the same network with full service and all the sudden my G2 loses service completely, right next to her... although it's not always while she's there, but like the majority of the times she's been there.
I just started another post to check on something, I have widgets that show me when I am connected to 3G and when I am connected to H. I have noticed that the phone is activity managing that connection. In other word, it is in 3G until data is transfered then it goes to H. I wonder if when we are in areas of "questionable" HSDPA signal if this hand off is causing the problems.
I have seen a lot of op's say that there problems come right after some data activity?
Just a guess a this point
i saw someone mention in another post that it happens after/during a text message alot of times. i haven't noticed that myself, but that's something to think about too.

What I've heard is that the phone will stay in 3G mode until you begin using data in order to save battery life. Makes sense to me.

Sulking data connection

Hi,
Still in my first week with my Note (UK rooted stock GB) and loving it.
One minor quirk though - where I currently am (hospital :-( ) I have no wifi and only an iffy EDGE signal. Sometimes the data connection struggles, drops and re-establishes itself, but occasionally it just stops trying and the only fix seems to be to restart the phone - toggling data/airplane mode on the power button, turning off/on data via the settings menu and firing up another, comms-based app doesn't help.
Can anyone suggest anything more convenient than a reboot.
Thanks

Fresh Network Booster and Network Booster
both working great, try them.
Yep, those are the ones I installed. They seem to improve signal bars but data transmission has still been crap until a short while ago - maybe there's a local cell problem - I'll keep persevering, but hopefully I'll be home in a day or so.
Lost data again today, tried the apps - no luck and after about 30 secs the signal bars were replaced with the 'no signal' icon.
I switched on airplane mode, waited a few seconds and tried to turn it off again but pressing the airplane mode button did nothing.
In the end I switched off/on, the phone came up in airplane mode but let me turn it off and everything was OK again.
Does this just happen in one location? Like maybe it's just weak cell sites? Just curious.
Could be - I'm still stuck in hospital so can't try elsewhere.

Alright, well, let us know if you have problems when you can try it somewhere else.
Also, strange that the hospital doesn't have wifi. Every hospital I have been to does. Lol.
Same problem here, looking in the whole forum it seems that some One X users are having the same issue... really annoying, hope its not a hardware issue... theres a really low stock of Galaxy Notes here in argentina...

(RE-Edited)Please Help Me (Cuban XT-907)

I took this screenshots last night, the kernel wakelocks(smdcntl0 and radio interface) are causing the massive drain in idle state, i searched the forums and havent found anything regarding these two wakelocks, this is in Cuba were there is no internet usage whatsoever, no wi-fi, no gps, nothing, this happened after i left the phone one week in airplane mode and then, after a factory reset, inserted the sim back in, i`ve done various flash throught RSD with the latest firmware avalble and dozens of factory resets, ever since, i am fully stock, non rooted, and with the 98.18 build, any help will be appreciated, i am going crazy with this...
sorry my english

Airplane mode should have saved your battery tremendously (since it disable all radios) and 2g speeds should be a battery saver too, even in poor-fair signal coverage, and factory resetting should have cleared out any battery draining apps that you may have experienced before doing the reset. Have you been more active with the phone lately? From what you are stating you shouldn't really be suffering from heavy drain.
in the past month i used the same way and it lasted like 3 or 4 days(only 2g), i am not doing anything unusual with the phone(with no internet what can you do), only 2g and the occasional gaming, i resell phones here(in Cuba) so i know a thing or two about android and i can tell something weird is happening after the factory reset...thanks for the quick reply anyways...i never post anything here because of my slow LAN connection, right now i am updating through connectify(wi-fi) to the last OTA and see if that solves my problems...thanks man and sorry for my english...

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. don't update - that will lock the bootloader, thus preventing you from slapping on the latest/greatest custom ROMs...
well its updated now...i took out the micro-SD( a 16gb Polaroid class 10) and did another factory reset after the update and the problem continues...last night the battery burned in idle state from 100% down to 9%, i took a screenshot but don't know how to posted, i will do another factory reset (this time from the stock recovery) and see if that solves my problem, another thing i noticed is that after the update in the storage settings you can see like 7 different "usb modes" or something...i most say that i am impress by how fast you guys step up and help me and i wan to say that this is a great community...thanks
i think that somehow i screw the battery at a hardware level by doing the first factory reset, this is not a normal behavior...
