[Q] what the f wheres froyo? - Epic 4G General

I bought my epic the first day they were available. Never rooted or anthing so just waited for this update, didn't have time rooted many phones before just busy guy right now.
Anyway bought my gf a epic last month so we could do the video chat bit and she liked the hardware.
K so what the f she got the froyo update ota and I have jack and sh1t and jack left town...
I see people had issues might be lucky I also see I could do a manual go but really where's the
ota?

Rooting literally takes 30 seconds.. And if you look under development, you can find the official release. Just back everything up and odin to eb13.

Did you do a search? This saw covered awhile ago. It was pulled because some people were having problems. but it has been uploaded to the net. The links are in this section. I wasn't on my phone I would post a link.

It's actually still available on Samsung's website. They never pulled it down.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D700ZKASPR
You can either use this tool to flash some froyo goodness (note that this does completely wipe your phone, so backup first).
If you prefer odin (which also will wipe your phone) you can retrieve the tar file from the folder where the above utility extracts itself.

bluetooth problems?
i have flashed the eb13 froyo onto my epic with the eb13 supernova, genocide .3a kernal and everything seems to be almost perfect except i still can not give voice commands over my bluetooth ....it will activate, say speak now and then it will disconnect before i can even give a command...if there is a fix for this please let me know...thanks

[Q] Where do i start?

I finally got my droid x about 2 weeks ago after waiting almost a month on backorder.. Since i ordered it ive gotten an pneumonia lung infection as of saturday tonsilitis and fevers.. Plus two weeks in i got laid off so this hasent been the greateast of time. Ive been pretty out of it and yea.. anywho. I got this and first thing i did was Root via the "DroidX Root" with the Root Me and UnRoot Me " buttons. Ive owned a G1 and a Droid Eris prior to all this and loved em both. Rooted them gotten the recovery image's custom roms ect. With this im getting confused. I think its partially because ive been so ill and disoriented half the time. Also because of this efuse crap and what not. Yes ive googled and searched but again ive been fairly out of it so im still not certian what i should do here. I downloaded some apk file Recovery Bootstrap v1.0.0.3 that i was told i needed to get but again...
I want or at least i think i want to get to 2.2 im currently still on the 2.1 build it shiped with. i have *228'd it or changed the firmware in any way all ive done is rooted it.
Im having issued with the data connection. My browser seems to hang a good 50-60% of the time wether im on my wireless g connection at home or on 3g. Ill listen to slacker radio and often it stops for sometime and either wont resume playback until ive closed and re-opend it or just does it on its own.
Ive heard of people getting roms on it but others tell me there not "real".
Also its "fluid'ness speed" seems to be jotty at times. I havent hardly installed much on this and its slows down really bad at times.
Basicly i like modding my phone and really enjoy all the work people put out to fully give us the full capability's of these pieces of hardware we buy. But i dont feel like im getting that.
What other suggestions can you all give me to do to my phone, to speed it up back it up remove this crapware like dlna ect. I have seen some threads about doing this but then people telling me they get stuck at the boot logo cause they messed something up and i dont really wanna do that.
What have you done with your phones? How well do they run?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and i look forward to everyone's reply

Sorry to hear about your problems. I just went through a week of hell before being diagnosed with pneumonia this June. So I know how it felt.
Basically, even though 2.2 OTA is available, if you mess up your phone while modding, there is no stock image to fall back to, so you'll be stuck with a bricked phone.
The best solution right now is to upgrade to original 2.2 leak. Then you can install leaked 2.3.15 which is the same as OTA (with a difference of being deodexed and rooted). In this case even if you have problems, you can always flash original 2.1 back and start from scratch.
rootzwiki has a good amount of info on how to do all of this. But of course feel free to ask questions.

OTA Updates?

Well, I know ota stands for over the air, and that these updates are pushed by sprint after samsung pushes them to sprint themselves, but one question how does one expect to download a 250 mb update through sprint 3g 100 kbps speeds?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
It'll take awhile or just use WiFi.
usuallly it around 90 mb not 250 mb
All my other android phones on sprint have silently downloaded the updates, and then prompted when they where ready to be installed. LG Optimus about caught me off gaurd with the latest update. I assumed it was a Voicemail update (my wife still didn't have the text VM) I about ran it before I noticed the size of it.

I don't think you can receive an OTA on Wifi.
I guess I would just come here and download a flashable update within a day of the release and not worry about how the ota is going to download.
You could always set it to download before you go to bed, if you have that option.
Yea, updates.zip are not large files, usually get downloaded by parts while your phone is idle. 250mb or more are full odin tar balls which are off line updates

Pretty sure they've always had a site to do it from as well (download to computer, move to phone), not sure if that will be Monday or a few days from then.
Either way, as soon as someone has the OTA, shouldn't the ROM's come out soon after etc?

They said in the article.it will come in form of 3 updates..not 1..
That said since they chose OTA, I am REALLY hoping that they re-enable Samsung Kies support :/
A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
that was from the PDF, so, according to the upgrade process info page, the first leak, most OTA updates download automatically, unless you have some setting preventing it. It says it will take time listed above. DI18 to EB13 (DL11 is old) is the first, of three different updates to come out, then they will do DG27, and DI07, which, most people are not on anymore... guess its for newly activated old stock laying around somewhere. So there will only be one download, it will do it itself in the background, take 6-8 mins to install, reboot, Froyo. Its not like a PS3 update where it takes X amount of time to watch the download screen, cant sign in to PSN until you do it... didnt you ever Odin back to the DG27 from ages ago, and then let it OTA to DI18? Thats probly gone now, but thats what it would do. Given its done right, its way easier than what I have heard of the kies stuff... of course the easiest way would be an update.zip from here, that is pre-rooted... minimal modification... Im hoping someone can do that, even keep the bloatware, just make it removable... that would be sweet... there are nascar fans who understand android! LOL just kiddin... but a rooted, maybe deodexed (you themers need someone to do that first, right?), but no ROM... then let people have at it. I just cant wait for the craziness that will ensue in Development after monday, if it comes thru... General will go back to being a ghost town... just update the 2.2 ***** thread to 2.3, or whatever...
now that I think of it, there should be a new 2.2 dev section... that way people dont go trying to use joeykrimms OG root on 2.2 or something... plus some of the rom threads are becoming their own wikis... time to start fresh!

Sprint Reps say DON'T update to 2.2! lol

So I went to the sprint store today cuz my battery took a ****. The repair guy was telling everyone not to run the OTA update to 2.2, apparently it's bricking phones and breaking camera. He said Sprint will have their own update in a couple weeks. I lol'd as I walked out with my deodexed rooted EB13...
well that would probably explain why my wife hasnt received the update.. oh well.. I already updated with the zip files as well.
Go figure and they keep rolling it out.

Loving the official 2.2. 12hrs unplugged so far and 60% battery left. Usually my exchange email kills it during the day since the tower is overloaded downtown with awesome 20-60 kilobit speeds. So my 3g radio gets a work out constantly trying to communicate.
Good job sprint smh

I updated my buddies phone to official 2.2 last night and his phone turned into a brick. Nothing would power it on. No boot, no recovery, no download mode, no nothin... I was using odin and the tar file though and not the update.zip
I did the same procedure twice to my epic and it worked great.

Calling B.S. unless otherwise proven.
I'm skeptical that they are still rolling it out in force... My mom and sister have yet to get it. I'm just sitting on dk28 for a bot myself so I'm not sure how eb13 is actually performing... The forum posts don't make me particularly optimistic
i can believe it, it was a ***** for me to update my phone using odin and the eb13 tar, it just would not work, my phones screen kept turning a different color like purple or green then odin would just freeze. Tried another computer and was able to do it using the samsung .exe file and it wiped everything and i thought i was good, running real quick and snappy, but i opened the camera and went to record a video with it and as soon as i hit the button to switch to video i got an error saying the camera has crashed and it kicked me out :/ I thought, according to sprint, that we waited this long so they could iron out the bugs and make sure there was a release that was worth of releasing!
This official release is flawless for me. I did get the orange screen thou with the samsung tool, I just reran it and its 100 % flawless. Recorded vids with no issue.
could this be the EVO curse we were dreading?
Btw. Everyone owes a oppology to noobl. Remember he warned us about the leak dk28 bricking some phones? And some in here claimed the epic is unbrickable? Uhhuuu... Everyone... Form a single line and appologize.
I don't know how to prove that the phone was bricked, but it definitely was. It got stuck at param.lfs (or whatever that file extension is) in odin, so I retried it a few times, next thing I knew it would not turn on. He should be swapping it at the sprint store tommorow I think.

I was on DK28 and since I followed instructions correctly, my phone is still in working condition. HA!
That's misinformation from the store. Here's the deal with the update... Yes, it's still being pushed and all devices should have it by Friday. There have been some reports of issues with the camera and browser force closing but those are resolvable in most cases with a hard reset (sucks I know). I haven't seen any reports of a phone that was truly bricked, although custom roms will be more likely to have issues with the OTA update. I've personally updated 8 of these both OTA and with the Samsung installer and haven't had an issue with any of them after the update.
Currently looking for a custom rom though because I don't like some of the changes that were made. It does feel like the screen is a bit laggy after the update and I hate the new messaging app but overall no performance issues

lol. Me too. I used the 200mb samsung tool. No old odin with modified eb13 deodexed junk. Follow instructions nerds!
I'm not buying it. I know there are isues out there (myself included) but I would think if it was a serious problem we would have people on the forums saying it happened to them by now.
I updated my phone via the Samsung .exe file which I knew would wipe my phone which wasn't a problem for me since I use gmail to keep records of my contacts, call logs / sms (using sms backp+) and etc. So no worries there. I did get a little miffed about losing the apps but that is expected for a phone wipe.
There are few quirks and some changes in the GUI I didn't like. Big issue is the stupid SMS client they had to change so will be looking for a altnative version for it. No big deal but why change something when it works in DI18??
Screen rotation lag is fixable via screen calibration (posted elsewhere in this forums).
Least now the Devs have the source code they should be coming out with some nice ROMs soon. Rumored for Sprint to come out with an update in a couple of weeks? Not worried about it, by then most of us will be on custom ROMs anyway.

flashing kills the balls out of the battery. i have had a fully charged battery die in half an hour running odin multiple times trying things out. id bet almost anything that if you had an external charger to throw your battery in for a bit the phone would boot in to download mode with no problems.

Are we ever going to get 2.2

I love my phone but it's frustrating seeing other galaxy devices getting updates left and right while we get left in the dark
I posted a comment on samsung forum saying that this phone is great but it's already outdated when it hit the stores and they denied my comment
Honestly I'm losing hope due to the fact my girlfriend had a Droid Incredible with 2.2 even my old G1 has 2.2 it may be to much for it to handle it but it still has 2.2
Btw. If it wasn't for you developers I would have left a long time ago Thank You Guys

It will get 2.2 eventually, but only time will tell how long. If we can get kernel source for the I500 phones, we should be able to get you a working kernel, and you may be able to use one of the Fascinate Froyo ROMs then. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the kernel until Samsung releases the OTA or source because of the different video driver used for the screen/ticker/soft keys.

I'm with you on this update lincoln3823. Very frustrating hearing other phones have froyo while a phone released in November is unable to get an update.
I love my phone but I'm going crazy with my RSS not working at all and SNS not working correctly (facebook-yes; twitter-no).
I've even reset my phone and it worked for maybe a couple of days.
Why won't they push an update to froyo??

If that's true, that really stinks.
Sure wish I new someone who knows the answer to this question.
Heck, I might even pay for it, if the cost (ROI) was worth it. Sure would like to see flash on my phone. Besides froyo has 57% of the market vs. eclair at 31%.
That's crazy considering the Continuum came out in November.
On another note:
I haven't rooted my phone and I noticed your signature as Rooted.
Question? Is it worth rooting? I've read Pros on it but haven't seen any Cons. What's the drawback on it? Updates? Can you revert back to stock if I choose too.

Can you point me to the "Root for Dummies" section?
Also, what software do I need to backup my phone incase of trouble so I can revert back to stock?

I really didn't have an idea about rooting either....seems like I was looking everywhere for rooting information. I tried z4 multiple times with no effect. superoneclick worked. samsung submitted ec17 for the fascinate to verizon...and apparently that is still in testing...im just gonna assume it ll fail testing like most of their updates and never come out
the fascinate root crowd no longer really cares though as the mesmerize 2.2 officially came out w/ source....
but it seems like continuum updates follow quickly behind fascinate updates...so if hypothetically a fascinate ota occured like this week then it would probably be soon after for the i400
Ok, I was just fine tweaking 2.1 for now until something happened and we finaly got 2.2+, since Eclair isn't really that bad. Now I am starting to see 2.2+ only apps (ones that I want to try mostly) and it's starting to make me less patient. It saddens me since this phone had so much potential with the decent hardware and interesting ticker feature, but it is quickly being left in the dust as the little android that couldn't... /sadpanda
Looks like Samsung has released the Froyo source code for the Fascinate... that could be a good sign... Of course, isn't there a Fascinate on Rogers (Canada) that has had Froyo for awhile?
I know I saw it on android central and I got excited but then again we did get left behind once before

Sprint pulls gingerbread 2.3 update?

So i recieved a notifaction today that my samsung epic was eligable for the gingerbread 2.3 update. Knowing not to get my hopes up, I followed the instructions to update, but my phone kept telling me my current andriod version was up to date.
I called sprint technical support which was the biggest waste of two hours of my life. They ended up screwing up my phone, which I had to manually get working again.
I finally called my local sprint store to see what was going on, and he told me that spring PULLED the samsung epic 2.3 update because many clients were reporting problems with their phones. He told me it would become available again in the next 3-4 weeks. I have no idea how he would know this information, but im leaning towards speculation. 3-4 weeks is 6-8 months in sprint langunage. He said his is working completely fine, and he would be fine with me to come down and he will manually put it on my phone for me, but warned if my phone bricked, it would be stuck that way (aka i would have to use odin to send it back to stock).
I manually put the E122 version on my phone and so far have ZERO problems. Is anyone else aware of sprint jumping the gun on this one and pulling this update?
I've had the Epic since day 1.
They have pulled EVERY-SINGLE-UPDATE in the history of Epic updates.
It's almost laughable. I can't wait to get a sprint phone that sprint and samsung dont mess with (nexus prime, etc)
I have the correct version right? EI22 is the latest and greatest?
What happens if sprint releases a newer update, will I have to manually remove this one and go back to froyo eco5, or will my phone update ok?
can you point me in the direction of the way you updated this with zero problems? thanks

Im not sure if your being sarcastic, but I will point you anyways.
Before anything, make sure you have FROYO ECO5 Installed, and nothing else.
1.)go to ww.gottabemobile.com/2011/11/09/samsung-epic-4g-gingerbread-update-rolling-out-can-be-manually-installed
2.)rename the zip file they have for you download to update (NOT UPDATE.ZIP, just UPDATE)
3.)put the file on your SD card
4.)start phone in boot mode
5.)update.zip will appear on the boot screen, select it.
your phone will update automatically.
Since it was an official release, EI22 should upgrade to the "GB fixed" version for the Epic, even if OTA is stopped. A quick google search doesn't confirm that the update was stopped. Not saying you're wrong, but could be misinformed.

I agree. I mean it made sense and all, considering i was unable to update via OTA and my phone said my andriod version was currently up to date.
I guess only a certain percentage of users are getting it at the moment? I dont know, I have it now and thats all that matters.
Only complaint I have is their new system they use to kill aps. I loved the fact I didnt need advanced APP killer with my epic, but this new interface is really confusing me.

My wife's stock epic had the same update notification and the same everything is up to date. So I talked to a friend who works at a sprint store and he explained the whole market queue thing for the update (unnecessarily I might add).
He then called support and talked to one of his buddies there who told him that they are getting slammed with calls about this and that they can't do a thing about it if the person isn't up in the queue.
Hell of a way to push an update.
go figure sprints always tryin to screw everyone they can. good thing we have devs and root to make them acutally work faster and better!
+1 to everyone who knows anything bout andriod
Sprint stated it would be completed over 8 days to ensure it goes smoothly. which means the 17th is the last day. Also it is not listed as suspended on their site. EB13 was immediately listed as suspended when they pulled it.
Sprint zone just sent me an update stating that gingerbread was available. I don't think they've pulled it. But hey its sprint so who the he'll knows! They'll probably wait until they push it to everyone and then pull it ;-)

You just need the GPS fix. That's the only problem I see with stock ei22 and the fix makes it work fantastic. Even better than ec05 in my opinion.

Ota not canceled. My girlfriend and I both have epics. When sprint put update on their website I odin'd her phone back to stock ec05. Last night she got the sprint notification to update.

Yeah, that "your update is ready" message from Sprint is automated and isn't related to your spot in the queue. The same thing happend to me (I got the message days before the OTA was pushed to me) when Froyo got released. I can't tell you how many days before, I waited a day and a half and just did it manually.
yeah, that notification has no bearing on when you get the update. i got notified on my phone about the update hours after i already did the manual upgrade.

How does this screw anyone? "Ha ha, we got you - your phone is now exactly as it has been for months, you're so screwed!" ::facepalm::
