your phone/app tells you that you are on 4g/3g?
My phone only tells me if I am on 3g/4g (H) or 2g (E).
What app are you using that tells you whether you are on 4g or 3g?
G, e, 3g, H. Stock
On the desire z rom g, e, 3g, 3g+

Are you sure stock shows 3g at all? I am rarely ever in an HSPA+ area but never saw 3g, only H.

I know the user manual says there is a "3G" icon, but I've never seen one. To my knowledge, there is only "G" "E" and "H".
I'm on stock ROM and have never seen a 3G icon either.

I can verify that there is a 3G icon on the stock rom. I used to see it in my apartment all the time. I would float between 3G and low H.
I can also confirm that yes, there is a 3G icon and I have seen and do see it fairly often.
You can try the app called Widgetsoid. It has a option in it for 4G toggle I think but not sure if it will work correctly or not. I know on my friends EVO he has to toggle on his 4G in order for it to work where as on our network it is automatic.
3G = UMTS, H = HSDPA/HSPA+ on CyanogenMod.

4g toggles are for wimax. Use a 3g toggle, it'll get the job done. And yeah Widgetsoid is an excellent option.

The MT4G supports 2G (EDGE), 3G (HSPDA), and "4G" (HSPA+) networks. The 3G icon is commonly used to denote a UMTS connection while not actively connected to HSPDA/HSPA+, but I think the Sense ROMs hide this transition so you only usually see the H icon. On vanilla ROMs like Cyanogen, the icon switches between 3G and H any time you actually connect to data (assuming you're in a HSPDA/HSPA+ area).
Guys, T-Mobiles 4G is only a modification of 3G.
You should only be seeing H, E, and G.

Not true, Tmobile does not have 4g it is 3.5g..... Here where I am when I see the 3g its actually the att network NOT tmobile you should be able to verify this as well from your phone via mobile networks. When I'm on att 3g I get NO data connection at all. I believe that t-mobile is actually replacing their 3g network it has with the new 3.5g this is why I believe that no 3g is seen by so many people. I'm in Kansas city which is a "4g" network and when on stock I do not see 3g, just custom roms.
My answer for your op is.....The stock rom, I have found NOTHING to lock me to "4g" on customs other than the stock option to force WDCMA in the mobile networks section.

So according to Phonscoop.com Tmobile offically launched HSPA+. Apparently its in 50 markets.
So whoes got it? What kind of speeds are you getting. I have in my city.
Im getting 2.025mb/s Down and 601kbps/sec up
about 3 to 6mbps because you most likely have a device that can only do 7.2 megabites per second until a hspa+ device is available at the end of this summer. Max theoretical speed should be 21mbps, but thats going to be next year when tmobile lets the 42mbps network go into place.
My speed test says im getting 5007 download and 1583 upload..Not bad. It used to stay around 3500 DL.
The slide will support higher than 7.5 MB correct?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
The way I understand it; the slide will be limited tp 7.2mbps spped. They have to install a hatdware upgrade to the towers to support HSPA+ at 42mbps and that will require a different radio.
I know its not the same; but think of it like sprint. You need a 4G phone (EVO) to get WiMax 4G network service.
If I'm wrong; someone pleae correct me (but politely).

I genuinely hope you are because I explicitly asked the rep if this phone would support the new HSPA+ and of course the response was "Yes"!
You cannot compare Sprint because they went from 3G to 4G and that required a change in hardware both at the towers and the device. Tmobile HSPA+, from what I researched, only requires hardware upgrades on the towers and firmware updates to the newer 3G devices. I would be highly pissed if this isn't the case!

The rep told me too that the Slide would support HSPA+ From all the articals though i do not think this is 100% ture. But 7.2mb/s is fast enough for me on a phone.

i also asked tech support from the 1800 number too. They said the slide would support it up to 15mb/sec. We'll have to see. Right now i am happy with my 2+mb/sec speeds
The way I've understood it is that phones like the Slide will see improvements in speed, but since they are not HSPA+ phones, you won't get the full benefit.
The plus side is that you won't need a new phone and you'll see faster speeds. Downside is that people with a new phone will see faster speeds.

I think you are right on this.
But if i get speeds of 5-7mb/s on my phone i will be more then happy. Esp if im already happy with my 2mb+/s speeds.
I really dont think that anyone needs 15mb/s on a phone. With speeds like that the phone then becomes the bottleneck.
The T-Mobile twitter also told me it was an HSPA+ phone...
All I'm saying is that I don't expect the full HSPA+ speed, but I do expect faster than 7.2 Mbs!

In respect to increased speeds, yes but that is it. HSPA+ utilizes the current Tmobile's 3G network and is really fast. Theoretically the top speed is less then the other two but it is significantly cheaper and easier to rollout HSPA+.

bits, not bytes. 8 megabits per second = 1 megabyte per second if I'm not mistaken.
HSPA+ as an extension of HSPA is backward compatible with HSPA. Only HSPA+ devices will see speeds greater than 7.2mb, but you can use a HSPA phone on an HSPA+ network in the same way you can use an edge phone on a 3g network.
All android devices from T-Mobile have an HSPA internal modem, they don't currently sell a phone with an HSPA+ modem and you will not see speeds exceeding 7.2mb on a slide as it has an HSPA modem.
T-mobile is rumored to be announcing their first HSPA+ phone late this summer, suspected to be an HTC vanguard.
For those of you who are confused about Tmo's HSPA+ network and making comments on it's durability, here is a link that is on Tmo's website. I figured I'd make it easy for those of you that can't seem to do research.

I believe you. KC is pulling that however there are still parts of KC that pulls 3g and edge. I have done the speed tests on that area (3x each). I believe that areas that are mentioned to have HSPA+ are probably still being boosted seeing how the network is still kinda new. I have noticed some members posting their speed results in places like Texas and the results are phenomenal.

I got mine just after release too, and the rep told me I needed a "4G SIM" to get 4G speeds. However, I'm in a HSPA+ area and have never seen over 2 Mpbs down, so I'm in the same boat as you.
You should not need a new SIM. I am using the same SIM I got with my SGH-T915 (old, crappy little flip phone -- free) in 2007; my speeds are fine in my area.

What did you do with the sim that came with the phone?
Tossed it in a drawer. It's nice to have spares and not buy a new one should I ever need one .
I'm beginning to wonder if T-Mo's "4G" network is all smoke and mirrors.
I've never seen anything approaching 4G speeds on my (or my wife's or co-worker's 4G phones-MT4G and G2) phone in any area of Houston, which was one of the early 4G cities.
I was also told to use the newer SIM that came with the MT4G rather than my 3 year old SIM. Still made no difference in speeds.
Seeing an H?
If you see an H near the signal bars on the notification bar instead of a 3 your on the + network. I've never seen speeds above 3.5 in DC. Usually between 1 and 2.

Well, depends on who you ask. If you look at what network you are on (UMTS, HDSPA, HSPA or HSPA+) that is the real indicator of whether or not you are on 3G or 4G.
According to T-Mobile UMTS is actually 3G. I fluctuate between UMTS and HDSPA (or is it HSDPA?). NEVER seen HSPA or HSPA+. The only network indicators I have seen in my status bar are H, E and G, never 3g (even if I am on a 3G network).
I've been a T-Mobile customer for a long time so I had an old SIM for at least 6+ years. When I got my MT4G last month, the phone sometimes would not recognize the old SIM so I went to my local store and told them my issue, the CSR gave me a new SIM free of charge and told me that I needed a new SIM for 4G. So if you have an old SIM card, just visit a local store, they might just give you a new SIM card as they did for me....
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
If you are on the stock MySense Android software from HTC and T-Mobile, "H" means 3G or 4G, there is no differentiation.
I'm in a 4G city, but the 4G locations are spotty. In one of them, I've gotten better than 6Mbit download speed. With a six or eight year old SIM card.
I just bought this phone for my wife and have been doing speedtests in random places between this phone and my vibrant. The diff. in speed is very minimal. after numerous speed tests the mytouch 4g is about 100 to 150 kbps faster. Not enough for tmobile to be touting thier 4g network.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Changing SIM cards doesn't help. I have been using a 6 years old SIM, and switched to the new SIM that came with the phone. Absolutely no difference in speed. On the downside, it messed up all my contacts and my T-Mobile sync doen't work anymore.
You Don't need a new SIM
As long as the old SIM has proper contact and is intact you don't need a new SIM. CSR's are not technical people or engineers for that matter. They feed whatever they told from tech. support. There is not difference in SIM technology since it was first came into being since 1998.
Since GSM is a standard and the underlying technology of T-Mobile for voice communication, SIM cards sold before and now are no different. The requsite info is still in the old SIM card and used for authentication for communication, just the Radio is more advance and different (HSPA+).
Infact there are two radios inside our mobiles that allow simultaneous Voice and Data
1- GSM(which is inclusive of GPRS & EDGE) - Voice
2- 3G(UMTS - WCDMA, HSDPA, HSPA+) - Data
and they both use the same basic authentication provided in those 6+ years old SIM card provided the gold contact are still intact.
yeah im in the same boat, im have teh H sign, but I average only about 1-2m up, and 1 down
ive never gotten remotely close to some of the 3-8 down speeds ive seen people post
The highest I've gone is about 3.85m down and 1.3m up. And thats not even at home. I get maybe 1 down and even less up at the house with a new sim, so I agree it doesn't matter.

My brother-in-law works at AT&T, and tells me that when they start rolling out LTE later this year, the Atrix 4G has the required radios to access it.
Can anyone confirm this, and will this be LTE on par with what Verizon currently offers with the Thunderbolt?
I may know nothing about phones, but this phone was advertised as 4G( which it doesn't have yet). It was not advertised as LTE, i doubt AT&T would lose the money of selling a new phone by just upgrading the old one
The Atrix doesn't have an LTE radio. The Droid Bionic which is basically an Atrix but on Verizon will have the LTE radio.
Our Atrix was meant to operate on certain frequencies, unless we can use frequencies that weren't published or they're planning to push their LTE on one of these frequencies I don't see it happening :-/ sorry don't mean to burst any bubbles but its something that I hoped for as well or maybe an option that the xoom had that we can send it back to have to upgrade to an LTE antenna again I don't see it happening
thats just my 2 cents

There two kinds of 4G as the carriers describe it (HSPA+ and LTE).
The radio in the Atrix only supports HSPA+.
Funny thing is, HSPA + and LTE are not true 4G.

True if you want to get technical wimax is the only true 4G. But the ramped up hspa+ which is basically the 3g uncapped and the lte are compatible. It's part of the design lte. Both verizon and att have designed their lte to be reverse compatible so for now we only get super 3g which will get the same speeds as wimax but as lte rolls out our phones will be compatible that's why their all being marketed as 4G LTE phones and not one or the other. The LTE system is reverse compatible with all 4G ready phones so no not exactly the same but close enough that it can still be called an apple no matter what color the skin is

So what you're saying is that the Atrix will be capable of what's currently available on Verizon LTE, but not true to the official 4G definition?

Nope, WiMax is not true 4G either.
Yes, it's IP based, but it's too slow.

It's all a stab at having wireless broadband speeds. This is the closest we'll see before our kids are designing the new phones

the frequencies don't matter, HSPA+ and LTE are different types of signals. THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE. and our phone does NOT have an LTE radio.

Well that's depressing, but about what I expected from Ma Bell. Can't wait to switch to Verizon once I get off my family plan, to be honest.

The Atrix DOESN'T support LTE. Like everyone else says, It would need a new radio. If LTE didn't, then why can't Verizons 3G devices access it???

Im either going to get Verizon for LTE, if I can get it unlimited or I will go with T-Mobile and their HSPA+ (its fast enough for me).. plus T-Mobile is really cheap and I would save money. That is if the Ma Bell DeathStar does eat up T-Mobile...
I was snooping around in the settings and noticed my preferred network type is set to "global" even though one of the options is labeled "LTE (recommended)".
My LTE data seems to be flowing smoothly I just don't want to miss out on any LTE bands (Sprint) or waste battery life.
Here is the pathway to the setting:
settings->wireless & networks->more->cellular networks->preferred network type
Thanks for any info or thoughts on the matter! Love this phone!!! :victory:
That's weird I only see 3 options lte,3g and 2g

Humm I have 4 options:
LTE
3G
1x
Global
I wonder if it is a Sprint thing :/
I have also 4 options I did changed to lte, I'm with Sprint too

There's basically no difference using global vs lte on a cdma network

Well, I just did some speed tests using Sensorly and Ookla Speed Test apps and I get much better LTE down/up with the selection "LTE (recommended)". I will do more tests at different locations but it was night and day going from global to LTE.
Is there an app that does not require root that shows what LTE band you are on?
I'm on verizon. Under "preferred network" I have
global / LTE-CDMA / LTE-GSM-UMTS
I do have verizon 4G LTE, but does that mean I do not have verizon 3G?

Verizon doesn't show 3g only in the settings screen on any device (no idea why).

Same here, eager to know what the optimal settings are!
Can any of you guys on Sprint see if you have an issue where the phone goes to 3G after a call ? See the thread I just started on this.

Thanks but I am happy with the current app "SignalCheck Pro".
Also Global to LTE didn't really change anything after further testing/experience. Everything is just peachy! :highfive:

I have been on Verizon network, due to my work for almost 3+ years now. The only time, I had to mess with those settings was while I am Traveling international. In the US, switching those should not make any difference. Just make sure, you have the enhanced LTE toggle turned on to connect to XLTE.

Humm I don't see the enhanced LTE toggle. Is that a Verizon thing? I have Sprint.

Here is where I see the option. I am not sure about Sprint, never been on Sprint Network.

Ok cool that is where my settings are as well. Must be a sprint thing. I am using the "LTE (recommended)" selection and it seems to be going well. I am also connecting to Sprint Spark when I look into the SignalCheck Pro app.

I have both, but for some reason the band doesn't seem to be reported when using SignalCheck Pro. LTE Discovery shows it, so I'm not sure why.

My 6p on Verizon shows global, CDMA LTE or GSM LTE. After getting fed up with my LTE dropping constantly I just tried (about 5 minutes ago) switching it to GSM LTE even though I know Verizon is CDM just to see what would happen. My phone went from no service to full LTE instantly. Really weird no idea why that would happen. Then in the middle of writing this post phone dropped LTE again. I went and switched it back to CDMA LTE and now I have full LTE again.
It seems like when you are traveling and you hit a dead spot switching the network preference resets the phone signal and it finds a closer tower or something works either way you switch. That is my two cents.
2G, 3G, LTE (recommended) are the only selections I have on my phone. I'm using WETA 8.4 and on cricket wireless, which btw has a $70 plan where I get unlimited everything - no cap on data...I literally stream Hulu/Netflix without any interruption. I stopped using major cellular companies when I was getting screwed with hidden data fee's <AT&T> was always notorious for charging 20 bucks after so many gigs...Also I'm paying a third less than what most of friends are, but if has it's disadvantages too.
