This is my first phone that uses MTP. My last phone had an SD Card, and used USB Mass Storage, so I'm not sure if this is normal behavior for MTP.
I plug the phone in, and the only way the computer recognizes it as a storage device is to have USB Debugging off, and the phone set to "Connected as a Media Device (MTP)". If I set it to connect as a camera, it only sees the DCIM and pictures folder, and it only works if USB Debugging is turned ON. So that's the first weird thing.
All I really have installed driver-wise is the stock android drivers that are included in the SDK, installed using the device manager method. I am rooted stock, running Franco.Kernel.
I am connecting to the computer using the cable that came with the phone, although I have tried 4 other cables and they all return the same result.
What happens is, I plug in the phone, and it pops up in My Computer as "Nexus 4, Portable Media Player". So I click on that, then click on Internal Storage, the only available option. It takes about 5 seconds to load up all the files.
I am trying to back up all the files on my External Storage before I flash a ROM. I know it's not necessary, but better safe then sorry. So I highlight all the files, and drag them into a directory on my computer. And a dialogue pops up that says "Estimating time required to transfer files" or something like that. And it just sits there. I let it sit for about 15 minutes, and after it did nothing for that time, I hit cancel. To get it to fully cancel, however, I had to disconnect the phone and reconnect it.
So now I'm trying to do everything 1 by 1. Transfer 1 folder at a time. The smaller folders work fine, although they're still incredibly slow. Over a minute for a folder with 2 Megabytes of data in it? That can't be right. But then I hit the bigger folders, such as the "Android Folder" where all the big games are stored. So I drag that folder into the directory on my computer, and it spends about 25-30 minutes "Estimating time required to transfer files". Then it starts the transfer. It says it will be about 2-3 hours. There's around 3 GB of data in the folder, according to right clicking on it and clicking properties, so I guess that's a semi-reasonable amount of time, but still pretty slow compared to my old phone. But then, after about 20 minutes of copying data, it just stops. It looks like it has finished, but upon going through the directory on my computer, and comparing it to the one on the phone, it has only transferred about half of the files. So I try again, repeating the above process. And the same exact thing happens. It always stops at ~1 GB out of the 2.7 it should be copying over.
What gives? This is literally the most frustrating thing ever right now. I just want to flash PA so badly but I can't get my stuff to copy over!

That's so bad if that's normal. Why Google switched to MTP is beyond me. Another weird issue is sometimes it can take forever for the filesystem to update on my computer. I can put an apk file that I downloaded to my phone on the root of the external storage. Then, when I plug it in to my computer to transfer it off, it won't be there. I reboot, it still isn't there. After searching and searching, I went back, unplugged the phone, plugged it back in for the 20th time, and it randomly shows up. So frustrating.
Anyway... what's the command for adb pulling that? I know the external storage is called something like /emulated/0 or something. So would it be adb pull /emulated/0 C:\Users\blahblahblah?
Mines doesn't take 5 seconds to load up. Very speedy for me on transferring files back to back. On Windows 7 SP1.
We didn't do this because we wanted to use ext3 (although that is a side benefit.) We did it because we wanted to be able to merge the "public shared storage" (i.e. for music and photos) with the internal private app storage.
We got tired of seeing OEMs include many GB of internal storage for music, while users were still running out of space for apps and data. This approach lets us merge everything on one volume, which is way better.

is the reason why they used MTP. I personally prefer MTP even though some people always encounter problems with it and I have none. It's very handy on devices with a SDCard as well as Internal Storage, rather than having two of them pop up on "My Computer" it is merged into one and you can select which one you want to go into. Sometimes people are confused which one is which. Not to mention if you have an app that relies on data on the "sdcard" (internal storage) and it is currently plugged into the computer. It won't be able to read that data because it is in USB mass storage mode.
Certainly your situation is not normal.

That is not the reason. The reason is Google is slyly forcing us into a thin client platform ala chrome book and nexus. If Google doesn't start releasing nexus with at the very minimum larger storage, I.e. minimum 32gb on nexus, (would rather have SD slot) they will probably lose me as a client altogether. Yes I will probably still use Google maps at the very minimum but everything else I am in no way attached. The cloud is a poor replacement for local storage, and yes I too think off site storage will be a major factor in the future but give us larger storage options during this transitional phase. The cloud is slow, data is expensive, data is not widely available like oxygen is, I don't want to stream music, much less have any possibility of commercials and ads during my musical nirvana and transcoding my FLACs/wav's into 320 kbps mp3 is just piss poor bull**** and a very good reason why people should NOT willingly sign up for cloud services. Handing over ownership of your data and getting a lesser quality experience in return is just asinine and stupid. And Google drive is a poor excuse of cloud management and how come Google isn't forcing more developers to implement Drive and/or cloud services into android ecosystem, much less Google themselves just screams how bad Google wants to shove an apple up your anus.

that's all conspiracy about taking off MTP or SDCARDS in favor of their cloud service but i do agree with you, the 8GB/16GB combo was kind of silly, they should of done 16GB/32GB to the very least, as a person who lives in NYC and takes the subway. I won't always have service because underground we don't get any (we're starting too.. but it depends on which stations you're at) so the cloud isn't a viable option for me and it shouldn't be for most people anyway because of the data caps that carriers impose on them.
16GB is enough for me, but still would of been nice for a 32GB version. I hoped google learned from 8GB/16GB format for the N7 but guess not. should of been 16GB/32GB for N4 and I'd be pretty upset if they discontinued 8GB in favor for a 16GB/32GB as i paid for a 32GB at ~$349.
of course, google isnt telling everybody to get a nexus device. there are other alternatives out there such as galaxy s, note, etc. I personally like nexus devices for community support when it comes to custom roms and kernels.
Let's PM the devs start asking for Mass Storage support?
I hate MTP. I really really hate it. WiFi solutions (AirDroid, Samba, Total Commando) are not ideal either. I don't have to list the disadvantages, do I?

Oh crap.... can you kindly explain why it can't be done with the Nexus 4?
I have had USB MassStorage in some ICS/JB custom ROM for other phones.
Edit: I am guessing because the sd storage is actually an emulated folder?

adb pull /sdcard/ *should* work, although I haven't done it on the N4 yet so can't confirm if the /0/ throws a wrench in the works. It will still likely be painfully slow, but it won't just stop altogether for no reason.
I'm also a big fan of adb backup/restore, saves a lot of trouble when restoring your junk, including the sdcard. To back up your apps and the sdcard it would be:

A restore of this is all, or nothing, it will restore your apps, some settings, and the sdcard after you've flashed.
I think I'm going to just backup my pictures and TI Backup files. That's all I really care about anyway. I don't have time to wait 4+ hours just to copy a few GB's off my phone.

It's emulated because in Android 4.2.X it supports multi user on tablets.
It has USB Mass Storage for other phones because that's the way the manufacturer developed the device. It supports USB Mass Storage. Phones/tablets by Google use MTP.
Google for the topic of discussion on Galaxy Nexus, I don't have the time to find it on Google. But I'm sure with some searching with google somewhere between the lines "USB mass storage on galaxy nexus possible?" would lead you into the right direction. Best thing I can say is to just believe me because if it was possible, I'm sure that it would of been done on the Galaxy Nexus already which is a one-year old device.

A 2.8 GB backup took me ~40 minutes IIRC.

A good alternative to MTP is to just use your phone as a FTP server and move files around that way. That's what I do instead of dragging and dropping files via USB cable, I don't have any problems with MTP but I do have a problem with beating laziness

I'm copying over using adb pull /sdcard/ which seems to be working, although it keeps getting stuck on one file. I've deleted the file and I'm trying again though. It seems to be going a lot faster than straight copy and paste though.

It's actually quite fast to be honest. Phone connected to WiFi of course and being on the same network (192.) aligned with FlashFXP as the FTP client on desktop. http://www.flashfxp.com/
MTP works with debugging on for me...
I've just tested my mtp speed, copied 1.5gigabyte in 2.5 minutes... theres something wrong with your mtp.

Finally got my lovely Nexus 4
Rooted it to jellybean 4.2.1 and then started installing a few bits.
I've run into some problems with the usb connection though. It will frequently appear as if there's no internal memory, or it'll let me in the memory and won't let me do anything. For example, I was putting some files over onto it and the box in Windows popped up as usual with 'copying xyz to internal memory' but just hung, didn't make any progress. Similarly deleting files is troublesome and rarely works, I have to resort to rebooting my machine, reinstalling the Nexus 4 drivers and constantly unplugging and replugging the device.
I had the last straw this morning when I tried to move some photos from the device to my PC which aren't opening, giving me the error 'Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because the file appears to be damaged, corrupted or too large'. They are normal photos at ~2.5mb in size and work perfectly on the phone.
Any help would be appreciated as it's very annoying now!

Are you transferring a large amount of files? The new mtp protocol seems to have trouble with that, at least on windows. I haven't seen the "no internal memory" error you mention but I have had constant corrupted files and crashes while trying to transfer +1000 photos for instance (I'm using stock, unrooted), to the point of making it impossible to finish. See also this bug report here. What you describe may or may not be this issue, but if it is I have no idea what the fix is; I've personally given up.
WTF is this BS forced MTP.
I have to plug/unplug the phone like 100 times to actually get things working, this mtp sucks so bad.
Only upside is to be able to use adb and mtp together so that you can use the stuff you copy onto the phone right away.

Are there any tricks or tipps on how to use mtp? Do i just need to wait if things get "stuck" again? Like if I want to copy over files sometimes it takes ages before it even starts. OR when I rename files etc, the update takes ages...

starting from yesterday my note 3 stopped to be recognized from pc, it always fails in installing the mtp driver for the pc,
ive tried alot of ways to solve(unistalling drivers, regedit, etc..), but with no luck

Other most annoying differences:
In USB mode, I could play the videos I recorded immediately, and play any mp3's immediately.
In MTP mode, not only can I not see a thumbnail preview in Explorer, double clicking it forces Windows to copy the entire file to desktop before it can be played! (both video and mp3s)
I am hugging my legacy S2 more tightly than ever.
Mass storage mode (MSC) is removed on Android 4.3 (or 4.2.2) and later

When you say you don't have access to any file's do you mean on your computer ?

Are you saying when you have the phone plugged in via USB to a computer, you can't access the files on the computer?
When the phone is plugged into the computer, unlock the phone and pull down the notification shade (one finger swipe from the top). There is a notification that says "USB for Charging". Hit that and it'll open up a new window where you can select "File transfers". When you do that, you should see the phone to access the files on the computer.

lol - the nanny controls/bloatware in other phones are what does this to people. this is a pure google device. what you're asking for here is knowledge. back in 2009 - you had to figure this stuff out on your own (and it was fun). now there are eleventybillion solutions for the same problem.

I think this is what OP is talking about. This confused the **** outta me too at the beginning, I kept using the Developer options to toggle MTP. Thanks Google.

I agree it was confusing at first, but it's kinda growing on me to get those options right there in the notification panel instead of having to go to the developer options or storage options.

IMO what they should've done was make MTP the default when plugged into a computer, would probably save a lot of confusion from a user perspective. Maybe it'll change in a future update though since they may get a little backlash from new Android users who expect to be able to just plug it in and copy files over like it used to be. I too like the dropdown but if you don't know about it it can be frustrating as hell like in OP's case
Also undecided between 6P and V10.
V10 looks like more advanced device, but that pure android experience is what i will be missing on V10.
I finally got it
I screwed something up after I got the phone. I normally optimize the battery usage, as in shutting things down. I shut something off I shouldn't have. I didn't remember what I did. ( it sucks getting old). I had to do a hard reset, and started over. Once I did that everything started working. I got my music loaded on the phone, finally. This was the worst experience I've ever had with a new phone. But, it was my own doing.
I can't seem to figure out what's wrong; I've tried both MTP and PTP file transfer, but my computer (Windows 10) isn't detecting the device in my file explorer, but it's showing uo in my Device Manager under Android Device > Google Nexus ADB Interface.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.
Edit: Nevermind! Just uninstalled the driver and it worked just peachy.

Those issues were my concern when I first moved to the Nexus 6 but I learned fast I wanted access to my device more but to each their own I say.
Surprisingly i dont miss the sc card or removable battery.

What do you see in file explorer on PC? Just "Internal Storage"? Can you navigate around to all folders on your phone from PC file explorer?
I am coming from Note 3 and Alliance ROM. I was able to navigate to all folders on that phone. On the 6P, I seem to have access to "Internal Storage" folder only from Win7 PC. Google USB drivers installed and rooted. Astro installed and provides access to all folders from the phone interface as it should. I would like to move and copy files between phone and PC like I used to in file explorer, instead, I have been moving them to Drive and then accessing them from Drive on the phone.

i don't miss having a removable battery, but i wish it were at least accessible. the difference in build between the 5X and 6P is unfortunate. i was excited to see the 5X teardown and how it was (reasonably) easy to get to the battery. hopefully in 2 years, this is still a performer.
I received my 6P today. I have both my previous phone and the 6P connected via USB to my desktop, when I click on the 6P internal storage, it won't let me create new folders so that I can copy from my previous device's storage card. I'm using the PTP option for file transfer since the other doesn't work.
