I have a question. I had the samsung with touch wiz, and you could just start typing in a number, or use the numbers for t9, and it would bring up all the relevant numbers.
For instance
Samantha has a number of 212.555.0101
You could type 212 and it would bring up samantha, or
you could type 725 and Samantha would come up.
Does anyone know of an app like that for this phone?

If the hardware keyboard is open, from the Today screen my Vario II opens the phone application and does T9 lookup ONLY for the letters that are assigned to a number key, i.e. press dot+(1-0) and it gives you the choice of using the inputted number or inputted letter but press any other letter or dot+letter and the phone application doesn't open. Actually, scratch that if I press either W or X (no dot) it also opens the phone application and T9's contacts with those letters. But no other letters do this.
Anyone get this behaviour, or know how I can get it to automatically open the phone app and T9 contacts for any letter on the hardware keyboard?
I also have just noticed if I press the W or X key whilst on the Today Screen it automatically opens the phone application and uses smart search for a name begiinging with W or X.
No other key does this though.
Anyone else find that there Tytn Variant does this?

My HTC TyTN with latest Cingular ROM does.
OK, so that would seem to mean it is part of the WM5 ROM. So how can we get it to do this for all letters, or rather why do only w and x (and the numbers) work?
My last winmobile device (treo 750) allowed me to just start typing on the qwerty keyboard to get to contact I might want to phone.
On the htc hd2 if I press the phone button I can start typing in the name on a numeric keypad. So if I want to call Aaron I need to press 2,2,7,6,6.
Is there no way I can choose to type on a querty keyboard so i can just type Aaron.
There is a slightly clumsy way of doing this by going into contacts, choosing keyboard and then typing but it is a much slower process. Are there any other ways of doing this?

Nope - you can't change it (unless you find a 3rd party dialer that does what you want). How would you dial a number if you had a qwerty keyboard?
I must say I hardly ever had to and if I did I would either create a contact or use the on-screen keyboard.
It is just wrong having to type a word on a numeric keypad.
Are there 3rd party dialers? Would it still act this way if you removed sense?

Yes, there are 3rd party dialers (you'll have to search to find them), but I've never heard of one like you're asking for. And yes, turning off Sense would have no effect.
This is annoying.
Are software developers geeks that don't have an idea of usability?
With my last WM phone I've dialed 3 times faster.
But someone think I need to do more finger exercise.
Ridiculous.

Eh? Dialers should be numbers. Simple.
Just to inform that it's working again with the last rom.

What the hell are you talking about????????!!!!!!!!!!
Of course it has amazing smart dialing.
Just the dialer has 4 tabs on the bottom.
First tab is number dialing only.
Just hit the contacts button in dialer, tap the search tab on top to diplay keyboard, and voila you have a great smart dialing.
If you mean being able to find a contact by spelling the name on a keypad ... then mr2 supports it ... by using the contacts soft key on the Professional layout ... it brings up a screen with the contacts on the top 3/4 ... and a key pad underneath. Typing on the keypad matches the contacts to what was typed -- both the numbers and the equivalent names ... touching the name, and you can dial it ...
thx all, special to doministry. on x1 i just started typing name right after pressing call button, but on x2 i have to switch tabs. Is there way to set up default tab on calling?

Maybe by registry settings, but that I cannot help really.
There is something I don't understand.
So I am new to smartphones, have a Legend. Recently upgraded to Android 2.2. When I create a new contact on the phone and I enter his phone number, since I've upgraded it shows on the virtual keyboard also the letters "P" and "W" along with the numbers, so I can enter a phone number containing "P" and "W".
I was looking for some online help, but could not find one. What are "P" and "W" for?
I was thinking that probably this has something to do with modern phone answering menus and could be like "pause" and "wait" so entering "123w456" would produse "dial 123, then wait a bit and dial 456" where "456" could be extension. No idea - this is the first thing that came to my mind. Don't think of actual phone target I can dial it and try it with.
Does anyone know? I just read the Desire HD manual hoping it could answer, since I remember it has newer Android on it.
Help anyone?
Thanks
from what I know, one is for Pause and the other for Wait.
Function:
- Pause: wait for user to interact (press button)
- Wait: giving a short pause, then continue with string
That's what I think it is, maybe it is actually the other way around between P and W.
on my HTC Desire dialpad
W means "wait for user to interact (press button)"
P means "giving a short pause, then continue with string"
So I need to press button using "w"
PS: I use it dialling my IP-telephony provider from my cell.
Just typing +XXXXXXXpYYYYYYY
where XXXXXXX is pool number of IP-tel provider and YYYYYYY - the number I'm calling
Sometimes when entering data in a form, the standard stock samsung keyboard is replaced by a numeric pad - containing only large numbers in.
I would like to activate this pad at will, since it's a lot easier to enter numbers.
Anyone know it is possible?

it is possible if the coder set the attribute for the text box, so that it display a numpad instead of ordinary keyboard.
Yes, that's what I thought.
It sure would be nice to activate it from the user side when needed...
