Typing in names to bring up phone contacts - HD2 General

My last winmobile device (treo 750) allowed me to just start typing on the qwerty keyboard to get to contact I might want to phone.
On the htc hd2 if I press the phone button I can start typing in the name on a numeric keypad. So if I want to call Aaron I need to press 2,2,7,6,6.
Is there no way I can choose to type on a querty keyboard so i can just type Aaron.
There is a slightly clumsy way of doing this by going into contacts, choosing keyboard and then typing but it is a much slower process. Are there any other ways of doing this?

Nope - you can't change it (unless you find a 3rd party dialer that does what you want). How would you dial a number if you had a qwerty keyboard?

I must say I hardly ever had to and if I did I would either create a contact or use the on-screen keyboard.
It is just wrong having to type a word on a numeric keypad.
Are there 3rd party dialers? Would it still act this way if you removed sense?

Yes, there are 3rd party dialers (you'll have to search to find them), but I've never heard of one like you're asking for. And yes, turning off Sense would have no effect.

This is annoying.
Are software developers geeks that don't have an idea of usability?
With my last WM phone I've dialed 3 times faster.
But someone think I need to do more finger exercise.
Ridiculous.

Eh? Dialers should be numbers. Simple.

Just to inform that it's working again with the last rom.

Remapping D-Pad while on Phone screens

I've been searching for a while for a re-mapper/utility that will remap the d-pad to move around the numbers while on the Phone screen. Currently the D-pad does nothing while you're in the Phone dialing or call screen. It would make the Wiz into a great one-handed device if I can get the D-pad to move around the on-screen numbers pad. The center button can emulate pressing of the on-screen numbers. This way I can use one hand to enter the phone number and not having to use use my hands or the stylus while on-the-go.
I know I can slide out the keyboard but are you able to slide the KB out with 1 hand and use the number keys? I tried and it's VERY awkward and you'll have to remember to press the dot twice to enable the numbers. I'd rather not do that in a time of emergency.
Any one has tried to make this happen? Is there an app out there which will do this? This plus smartkeys/smallmenu will make the Wiz the ultimate one-handed device.
Anyone? am I the only one with a Wiz wishing for this function? I guess people like touching the screen with their hands more than I thought...
I would really be interested in something that could achieve this. I have my K-JAM in a PDAir case and being able to simply dial numbers with the keypad would be great. Rather than scroll through the contact list or opening the cover to access the keypad.
On Himalaya the D-pad had function in the dialer to get to call history and speed dial. That would help too.

hi all,
A cool Japanese Freeware called FakeCursor does this. It doesn't tab between fields, but emulates a Dpad controlled 'mouse'.
There is a program called AEKmap that allows you to remap the keyboard.
I have attached several layouts I made for the Phone and Calculator for use with AEKmap. (2 of the layouts work in AEKmap free mode, the other 6 require $20 activation to avoid NAG screen.)
Joeman
btw on my qtek9100 the keyboard is automatically in number mode while in the phone application. I don't need to push the blue dot twice.
I'd just as soon se a remapper that brought back the WM 2003SE phone functionality (right - Call Histtoey, left - Speed dial, etc.)
It's a shame M$ took that out in WM5
*One WM5 developer*
"I got an idea. Let's make our new phones LESS functional. That'll give us a leg up on the competition."
*Everyone else there*
"BRILLIANT!!!"
Did anyone create an aek file for mapping the alfa keys of the hardware k/b to the phonepad values.
ie: pressing a, b or c generates the code that is recognized by smartdialer (and interpreted as a, b or c respectively)
This way we can use the h/w keyboard letter-keys in the smartdialer!
This is especially handy when youre using the Wizard in your car in the landscape brodit holder (on-screen 'keys' are simply too small to be used safely)
it would be very cool.
wonder if Water can extend SmartyKeys for that - http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41060

I have to say that this is a killer app for the Touch.
If you have a Touch you really must install this software. It's awesome.

It's a lovely, good-looking piece of software, but ultimately just doesn't work for me.
I've tried keyboards on touch-screen devices but ultimately none really work for me - I think my fingers and thumbs are just too big! Also, if you are typing fast you don't really have time to check each letter before releasing your fingers from the keyboard, so the visual feedback is rendered pointless. Typing capital letters is a faff too.
The best I've found has been phonepad. Perhaps a combination of the two might be worthwhile, e.g. a phonepad with visual feedback?
Best SIP outside of phonepad!
Contact Manager is also a must for a touch user!
any1 tried to disable the dictionary? seems like its very troublesome for me as i cant type shortform.
EDIT - To disable the dictionary its in the setting -> input -> option
Only became very usable for me with "Enable Suggention" NOT selected.

The whole point of this keyboard is that you don't have to make sure you touched the right key...you just type the word, and if you typed "rgw", it'll change it to "the" because it looks at blocks of letters, almost like t9...you type and in the end the right word should be there...
it's head and shoulders above the kb that comes with any wm phones...
Go to the website, or check out the youtube vid

Whilst I agree that this is a good idea, it just doesn't work for me, I'm afraid. I think that I, and perhaps others, tend to type at least one or two non-dictionary words per text/message. I also use capital letters and punctuation a lot and, as I mentioned, I have very big hands!
I'm not saying it's no good, in fact as I mentioned I think that it's a brilliant program, I recommend everybody tries it out and reaches their own conclusions too.
It would be good if there were a way to auto-select the input (SIP) method on a per-program basis, e.g. so that PocketCMKeyboard came up automatically for text messages, but then it was the standard keyboard for other text entry. Perhaps this can already be done, I don't know.

It kind of is, just tap & hold the symbol key (lower LHS) and you get the . slide a little to the right & get the other most common punctuation marks.

Worst Key In Data / Typing

Dear Friends,
I just bought one HTC Touch last week. I regret on using it, because it is very difficult to key in data.
For example, when you want to type SMS, by keyboard, either block recognizer, or other else. You will find out that your HTC is too lag, and the spell checker can not be disabled. It make me regret to bought it. Do any one have a solution on this problem? I hate TOUCH...!!!
I, too, found out that you can't seem to shut off the spell checker/auto input, despite the supposed option to disable pre-emptive text... I'm a stylus guy and I use Fitaly (www.fitaly.com, I can type way faster than any other method ~ 30 words per minute) and it was driving me mad that it was putting text in "for" me. I had the same problem with 3 different ROMs (Sprint Original, JDs Clean, and dcd's 0.20) But now with no2chem's wm6.1clean, I still can't stop the pre-emptive text, BUT it doesn't override me!
I agree about the lag... I can't understand it either. Jim256 has been railing about this in several threads... and quite frankly, I agree with him. Not that it's slow per se, but it SHOULD be faster. Still better than the alternatives out there. I love my Vogue! Maybe RevA will help... who knows?
I sympathize with you bro.

Try touchpal by cootek
Touchpal is great, but takes some time getting used to. Overall I was impressed with the spb fullscreen keyboard. I assigned it to my short press button or what used to be the standard camera button and it has helped out a lot.
You can turn off spell correction through your controll panel. I love the data entry. I also use spb fullscreen keyboard. Its suprisingly quick and accurate due to the big keys. I have it mapped to the hardbutton (I only use voice recognition when I am wearing a bt headset so its all good)

That's what I use and I'm coming from having used graffiti on a palm m515 and multitap key on a cell phone. Works great for me.
Does anyone know how to change this??? On my Mogul, if I started typing a Contacts name or number into the "TO" area, it would auto complete the contacts email address or telephone number. How can I enable this?
Also, when I'm in a call, what happened to the "phone" icon in the top banner when I'm in a call?

Where does this keyboard come from?

I have the 16 key touch dual.
So on input options, you have the touch keypad, when I select that sometimes this comes out (please see attached)
I like it thought better than the 20 key touch keyboard.
Yeh... Where?
I second this, it works really well but there is no option to bring it up on the dual... it just randomly appears sometimes when you need to input text.
Thirded.
And whats more, why does text input seem to vary on web pages?
I've got some where it defaults to numeric input when it should be alpha numeric (ie. passwords), others where XT9 seems to be off (the subject on mails in facebook).
Its so stupidly all over the place and inconsistent! If I could just get this one to pop up all the time I'd be happy.
Doesn't that keyboard show when there's no text entry field?
And yes, i want it too, why would they disable it for normal usage?
Yeh I have found the keyboard to be all over the place when it comes to deciding if it will give you tx9, abc, 123, etc.... Anyone know a way to set one of the two alphanumerics as a default at least?
ok ive had this appear a few times now but couldnt figure out why, as you have been asking for it i have been playing around and think i know what is causing it. you may not need everything listed below but these are the settings on my device if you play around with them you should be able to narrow it down.
I'm running Toms rom, found here
i have disabled threaded sms by using the second setting here
i have enabled the favourite people button on the htc home screen by deleteing the key here
the only other app i have that may have changed a setting is the HTC home customiser.
After making these changes tick the enable xt9 setting in romsettings app, exit the app, then go back into it and untick the enable t9 setting, after closing romsettings you should have the keyboard shown in the second screen shot
as far as i can see this changes the keyboard in all applications
Thats great! Still albeit of a noob so you lost me somewhere there, is there a way to this on the stock ROM?
short answer is i dont know. try looking for an applcation called rom settings after installing it there is a t9 setting. untick it and closethe application if this makes no dfference you may want to try altering the other settings and then trying again until it works.

Eh? Maybe I overdosed on the thick pills last night, but that doesn't make any sense? If I click on a password field in IE, sometimes the main phone keypad always seems to default to numeric entry. But clicking in the field itself pops up this lovely keyboard.
It really does make no sense at all. There doesn't appear to be any standard/global keyboard settings.
And this is in v6 of WinMo, you would have thought they would have got the basics right by now, but the darned sent items has the useless option of "order by from" - when all the sent items are sent from the same person.
Its got plenty of potential, but it just seems like lots of separate teams were implementing it, doing their own thing without any centralised discussion/design.
Has anyone managed to get this to work with the standard T-Mobile [UK] ROM ?
any updates on this as well? it would be nice to just get an option for this
I got it to work, rather by chance, but thing is after that, I could switch to back to the touchpad type anymore.
I installed POCKETCM KEYBOARD. After doing that, somehow it locked this keyboard in when I choose touchpad.
Its rather a workaround, but for those who to use it premanently, you can do it
it also shows up at times when you are entering a password
Ouch ! I read to quickly and did'nt see the word "permanently" !
It does the same for me after installing pocketpc keyboard and even after uninstalling it !!!
Did you find a way to get the classic keyboard back ? This one is nice but there are some important keys missing as "." and a key to hide the keyboard !
Thanks
EDIT : The installation of Resco Keyboard got all the original settings back + Resco Keyboard of course.
So if you need to use the famous "hidden HTC keyboard", simply install Resco Keyboard and then Pocketpc keyboard.
You will then have your classic "touch" keyboards replaced by the "hidden keyboard" (+Resco Keyboard installed of course).
But to my mind, Resco keyboard alone is better...

What keyboard software do you use?

Hi, is there a keyboard with 5 rows (numbers visible) that you can still accuratly press keys with your fingers? Because my passwords contain both numbers and letters and i have to enter them a lot :-( Thanks.

I recommend Fingerkeyboard. It is free, highly customizable and does a great job. See my signature for the link. You can create your own layout if you want. I think other users have already made a layout with 5 rows, but if not, you can make your own. It is pretty easy. You can also see my signature for a basic tutorial on editing layouts. You decide what keys you wnat, where you want them, and what characters you want each key to type. If you have questions, you can post them in the Fingerkeyboard 2.1 thread here.
Another good keyboard if you prefer sliding instead of typing is SlideIT by Dasur. It costs $15 and does a great job. You can type (i.e. slide) really fast with it. It also supports many languages. You can view their homepage here.
Thank you!

I ready that fingerkeyboard had problems with the HD2, can you confirm that it works well, and what version are u using?
Today i tried TouchPal. it is the BEST keyboard for the HD2 (at least for me).
It is so east to type accurately now.
i agree with Touch Pal i can write extremly fast plus a lower sensitive cab installation is just perfect - at least for me.

one of the reasons that FK had problems with the HD2 is the speed of the capacitive screen. Some people correct that with the lesss sensitive Cab on this site. With FK go to options and delay the two hold times. I've set the left one to 400 instead of 250 and the right one to 250. Now FB works well on the HD2.
Chriss: can you confirm this and also tell us what the left and right one are for???
I installed TouchPal and thought it was pretty naff compared to the standard HTC keyboard, to be honest. I can type faster and mode accurately using the standard keyboard. In fact, this post was written using it!

in the options tab there are two response time possibilities, eg left and right one.
I've tried a few of the others now, but still easily prefer the HTC supplied keyboard. I just wish it had the same gesture support as the WM default keyboard.
just another suggestion for a good keyboard for HD2: Cliquick. This also rotates the screen to landscape when pressing the .,123 key in whichever program you're in. You can find it here: http://cliquick.com/
edit: you can also set it to be your default SIP in the option settings.

yes, I tried it. Its awesome in terms of speed and ease of use, but cannot switch to landscape mode. When you switch to landscape, e.g. in Opera, the screen gets messed up with this keyboard and a soft reset is needed. If I only was to use portrait mode, this would be the keyboard of choice.
Now that has become Cliquick. This even switches Word Mobile to landscape when you press the ",.123" key without using a third party sensor app like Gyrator or ChangeScreen. It comes with a 60 day trial and, if you do not want to buy it therafter, you can still use it for a max of 100 chars a day.
Let me throw ShapeWriter into the mix also.
Takes some getting used to but unce you've got it, it's much faster than a regular keypad (imo)

It's a pitty that this is only in English si I canot use it. BTW, it has great resemblance with Dasur's SlideIT. That one is blazing fast and easy to use (and supports several languages), but its main flaw is that it does not support landcsape. In this orientation it messes up the screen and a soft reset is needed. Otherwise this would be my nr 1 keyboard. Now that is Cliquick.

Sounds like the exact problem I have on my Advantage (the rotation issue). I've been the only one to report it, so I'm forwarding your note here as well.
I'll have to try Cliquick. Is this the one where you have to hit the same key several times to get different letters (like hit ab to get "a" and hit it again to get "b" ? Guess I'll find out.
Glad to hear the SlideIT works well except for the rotation issue, so if they can fix it, I'll be very happy.
I have noticed the latest version of Fingerkeyboard refusing to open when my HD2 (Leo) has come out of standby - can't recall what was running just prior so haven't raised it with the creator yet. I couldn't open another keyboard so had to take the battery out on the two occassions it happened.
A keyboard I have been using of late, as it worked well on my Touch HD is Zoomboard
I have tried both slideit and shapewriter and on the HD2 I much prefer slide it, its mainly due to how it handles the irratic behaviour of the capacitive screen, I mean HTC need to fix up its response, in shapewriter the line drawn with your finger tends to be scribbled everywhere missing letters, to much lesser extent on slidit, the keys are much easier to hit in slideit imo. the finger sliding keyboards are the way to go either way, I can type so much faster with slidit and takes only little parctice to get a real knack of it ... slideIT is fantastic
