Good news: Tab will get a Gingerbread update - Galaxy Tab General

From a Dutch site: http://www.tabletguide.nl/5393/samsung-galaxy-tab-krijgt-gingerbread-update/
Basically it says that Samsung employees in Germany have spread out the word that the Tab will get a Gingerbread update.... eventually (that is, they didn't mention when)
Let the FW leaks silently begin

That's not good news to me, I have a tablet, I want Honeycomb!

Lol. A firmware update is always good to me. Hopefully we'll get at least either.

2.4
Gingerbread is basically the same as froyo. The only real improvement is making the text selecting more intuitive. I want the api from honeycomb, for dual pane applications and the new 3d interface.
So that means either honeycomb or 2.4. For me 2.4 is probably better, since I will meanly be using the tab as a phone with a tablet profile.
So Sammy, please give us 2.4 and not just 2.3.

yes, nothing to write home about
if you want 2.3 go get the cm7 beta from the dev section
what i want is a honeycomb port

It is a good thing, because of possibly updated drivers we can use in a Honeycomb port

Don't know if I want a honeycomb port. What I want is a performance improvement and Gingerbread is such an improvement. The JIT compiler is optimized again (like it was the case with froyo) and there is a concurrent garbage collector for better memory management.
If honeycomb is even faster (for a non dual core device) yes than I want honeycomb. And as for the beta build, I rather wait for a beta of the 2.4 Frankenstein build LoL
Furthermore, if Samsung is committing itself to an upgrade, this means the tab won't become obsolete when other new 7" tablets hit the market, like for example the Flyer. It means that they have plans to stay on top of this segment, which is great. Maybe they will also improve the built in Samsung software, like for example the browser and the mail app. So no buzz, but rather the real thing for me

I'd be happy enough to see Gingerbread arrive (the CM7 beta on here is unfortunately a long way from being a stable release). Not so sure about Honeycomb. That's specifically for tablets without hardware buttons. Would seem out of place on the Tab - which let's be honest is a lot closer to a phone than a tablet, despite being awesome at that. I think Samsung will skip Honeycomb and head for the release that combines Honeycomb UI and phone functionality. Whatever happens, it'll be nice if Samsung supports the device with OS updates for at least a year.

I think it's relatively easy to map the galaxy Tabs hardware buttons to the software functionality as soon as the source goes AOSP
Then we can get rid of the software buttons too... boom! perfect!
I hope the new launcher doesn't eat up too much performance
and I fudging want GTalk with video support!

I'm not so sure but can't we port Samsung galaxay s gingerbread to tab

Yay for gingerbread/icecream/icecream sandwich! (or whatever it's called these days) This is comforting news at least, knowing that they are not ditching the smaller device in favor of the shiny new 8.9 and 10 inch models..

Good news, but I want Honeycomb!

I've read that the galaxy tab and galaxy line of phones have similar hardware... makes me think that new versions of android that are released for the phones could potentially work on our tabs.
not sure though, and im not a dev.. but i'd love some fresh official sgt firmware releases before samsung stops supporting the tab

Hope Android 3.2 isn't far off.

Looks like the Xoom and some new 7 inch tablets could be getting 3.2 in the coming weeks.
http://www.phonedog.com/2011/06/20/...t-for-several-screen-sizes-and-qualcomm-cpus/
* Ability to run on a "range" of display sizes
* Support for Qualcomm processors
* Bug fixes
* Better hardware acceleration
* Updates for Movie Studio, Movies, Music, and widgets
Hope the work Samsung is doing with TouchWiz UX doesn't delay us getting this 3.2 update. I could sure go for a nice big cup of "bug fixes" right about now. And some of that "better hardware acceleration" would taste good too.
i'd stick with vanilla for now, as honeycomb def still needs polishing. hardware acceleration is important, and i hope they improve text selection, copy and paste, and overall text typing, as i find those to be the most frustrating right now.
I bet you we'll either get it late or Samsung will throw touchwiz over top it. If they do i hope one of the devs can get all of that ugly UI junk off of it.
Or maybe 3.2 is the reason why Samsung didn't ship the tab with TouchWiz....

You may be right, but they never promised you a stock android device either.
I'm taking the wait and see approach rather than seemingly everybody else's negative approach.
Google already said they are not releasing the source code of 3.x so what I am waiting on is 4.0 so that the CM team can bake up a nice rom. But until then I am really happy with how well mine is working. There has been some lag but only when like 10 apps are running.
Apparently in the middle east (launch mid july)- the tab will be launched with touch wiz instead of vanilla honeycomb - i'll still be picking it up - with hopes of flashing north american firmware on it to get vanilla honeycomb - also I was told touch wiz is almost final - should be coming for you folks by mid july and it(final version) is quite smooth.
I used a test version ( very laggy) and one other what appeared to be a rc version - (much smoother but not vanilla smooth)

I just hope this tablet gets Ice Cream Sandwich.
samsung is notorious for their lack of updates
To beperfectly honest I bought the tab under the impression that it will be on 3.1 as long as I keep it lol
I wouldn't write them off, yet. Look what they've been doing on Twitter and how they're treating the outside development of their devices.
I mean, at I/O Samsung was one of the partners saying that they would update products up to 18 months from their release, so it would be a violation of a contract with Google if they don't update.
When I talked to a Samsung rep, they told me I didn't have to download TouchWiz if I didn't want it.....but I wouldn't get said bug fixes, Google updates without having TouchWiz.

Honeycomb 3.2 update for the SGT?

The Xoom (USA Wifi version) users are having their official 3.2 updates OTA now!

Where is ours?
I dont even have the 3.1 update for my 10.1v.
Haha
You do realize this is Samsung we are talking about?
It usually takes months if not years for them to generally fix major bugs on their devices. Same for pushing firmware updates...
Sad but this is how it is.

No, we may not see 3.2 officially from samsung this month, but i bet we see a leak of it before the end of august.
Xoom is also Google's flagship HC tablet so obviously they'll always get the latest updates first. Give it time. Maybe we'll have our 3.2 by the time ICS is out
Wait for Touchwiz before Android 3.2

Samsung is doing amazing job in hardware development. They really do but for software support the company simply s*cks.
For example Galaxy S is almost a year and a half old. This device sold more than 10 million units worldwide is one of the most successful smartphone ever and believe it or not it's still waiting to get Gingerbread.
And this is only one example. Almost every Samsung Android phone out there is suffering the same issue. Actually all with the exceptions of Nexus S and Nexus S 4G and that because Google itself is handling the software and pushing updates on those devices.
To make things worst Samsung will push the TouchWiz UI very soon. Which means now they have to make sure Touch UI is compatible with the latest Android version which take even more time. They always take their time to ensure compatibility with their stupid TouchWiz and they ALWAYS end up with extremely buggy results.
As for an early leak, what is the point of getting a beta software to an already buggy device?
If for any reason you believe that Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be an exception for Samsung, please feel free to share. I really like to know it.

I would disagree somewhat. The Galaxy S has been upgraded to Gingerbread on European versions of the phone. While updates for phones in the past have been lagging I would view that Samsung has taken a new approach as of late. The majority of the phones released around the same time period as the Galaxy S line have not received the Gingerbread update either. I would respond to you and ask for another cell phone manufacturer who is doing it better? Also besides zoom to fit (which spare parts will fix) there's not much benefit of 3.2 for us. The update adds zoom to fit, finally enables SD cards on the Xoom, and is more optimized to fit on 7" tablets i.e. 7-inch Huawei MediaPad.
As for Touchwiz I felt V3 was in need of much work (it does appear to be revamped a tad and smoother on the latest Fascinate GB leak) however V4 on the SGII has me sold on it being the default launcher on my phone. It is butter smooth and I love how it is laid out. If you were to poll the majority of Android users on XDA I would wager over 75% are unhappy with their stock manufacturer's launcher. I am looking forward to what Samsung will bring to the table.
I myself believe that Honeycomb is still very "beta-ish" in its current state. It was rushed and is extremely buggy. I think releasing the source code would help immensely as devs could iron out bugs (which they nicely do for Google now on the phone side). However, I do not believe it will be released before a transition into Ice Cream Sandwich.

It's not just about smaller screen tablets. It brings some small bug fixes also:
There is no lag on up side down home screen. Portrait is also better but not much.
Browser seems a little faster and typing a message on XDA doesn't lag as bad as it did on 3.1
I was also planning to buy SGT, but now I'm not sure anymore. I don't want to wait for updates. In this regard, the US Xoom is the best tablet. Only downside is that the US 3G version doesn't work in Europe and i want a tablet with 3G connectivity.
I got the update(wifi Only). Any one have a clue how to access it? Or make Sgt use it? The SD card i mean..lol
There isn't a 3.2 update for Galaxy Tab, and there is no SD card either. Troll somewhere else
I've been a forum reader/poster for over 20 years. Seen many things and read many posts. I know trolls and I know funny.
It's safe to say that the threads that I've read on the XDA forums have the most people with lack of sense of humor than any I've been a part of.
Why is that?
I didn't think it was funny... It was a clear troll post.
Could the 10.1 run 3.2 from the Zoom, or does it have to be made specifically for the Samsung 10.1?
Because supposedly reverse landscape and portrait mode performance are improved, near regular landscape performance.
Thanks for making my point.

Do you think that SAMSUNG will upgrade GS2 to ANDROID 4 when will be available in Q4

Do you think that SAMSUNG will upgrade GS2 to ANDROID 4 when will be available in Q4 2011 ?
Yes. One of the things to come out of Google I/O this year was a commitment from the big manufacturers to support Android updates for a defined period of time (obviously, hardware dependent).
Ye i reckon so. Even if there are hardware requirements, the SGS2 will definately be up to scratch. I have heard the 4.0 will adjust to the hardware anyway so it shouldn't be a problem either way.
The official Google policy is that all phones will qualify for updates up to 18 months from launch date .Providing the hardware is compatible .Samsung have agreed to this .
jje
Android 4? Still haven't gotten the 2.3.4, and Android 4.0, and that in Q4 this year? Am I reading it right?

In case you are thinking "4.0 is too fast because we haven't gotten 3.0 yet", 3.0 is Honeycomb and a Tablet only release. 4.0 is Ice Cream Sandwich and is supposed to unify both Tablets and Smartphones.
Anyway, version numbers by themselves mean nothing since they are arbitrary values given by humans. For example, Firefox 4 came out not too long ago and we have 5.0 now.

Next version of Android will have onscreen keys and hardware keys will be unsupported, just like on Honecomb.
So even if Samsung updates SGS2, we'll be left with a useless hardware home key and screen space will be lost for software keys.
Phones that run the next version of Android will be designed for that, with no hardware keys and extra screen space for the soft keys. On older phones like SGS2, it'll just look silly.

/me reckons that should be easy enough to sort out... I'd bet that either
- existing phones get support for hard-keys
- Samsung codes their own support for the keys, in order to keep their customers happy.
THEY WILL. They wouldn't haveput 1GB of RAM in this phone, unless they wanted it to have a "shelf-life" of more than a year. It probably won't be fully supported (because 4.0 is rumoured to to be for 720p displays and whatnot) but it will definitely be supported.
Android isn't like iOS, where as soon as the next version comes out, the older ones are immediately made obsolete. It's much more versatile than that.
And although it will be built around no hardware keys...it can't be completely built without them taken into consideration! What happens to volume keys and the lock button? The three buttons almost every single (if not every single one) Android handset has...
It'll be a similar situation to the one at the moment. The SII is released, and the S1 is given Gingerbread because it's still very popular. The S2 is more so, so I rekon at the release of the S3, we'll also get Android 4.0
SO excited. It's what android needs to continue eating away at the stupid domination of iOS/Apple.

It's easy to put something in the kernel to support the hardware home key like you say, but what about the multitasking key in Honeycomb which'll likely be in the next version too? There's no key in SGS2 for that... That'll have to stay on the screen and take precious screen space, probably together with soft home and back keys... Not to mention the even for today low SGS2 screen resolution.. Next version of Android on 800x480? Forget it...
It'll probably work, but it'll be silly... You'll want to get a new phone that is designed specifically for that...
Not to mention the hardware acceleration features that'll be coming which current hardware likely doesn't support. Like, Honeycomb seems to only work on Tegra. I don't know if it'll run on current version of Exynos used in SGS2...
So not only will it look silly, it'll probably run slow too.. We'll all want to get a new phone for the new OS.. That's what these things are designed for, to make money magically disapper from our pockets and appear in their pockets...
Remap one of the hardware keys to the multitasking key.
And as far as slow, i would hope that a dual core 1.2ghz cortex A9 would deal with it! The gig of ram will help.
And as far as hardware acceleration, i would think that google will expand the support to more than just tegra, that's half the point.
Honeycomb is just a limited stopgap as gingerbread would be awful on tablets!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
We'll just have to wait and see. If it all relies on missing hardware buttons then maybe Android 4.0 won't be fully compatible with SII, but if that's not the case, i'm sure SII will be upgraded to Android 4.0. If it won't be fully functional then i wouldn't want it on my SII just for the purpose of bragging that i can run a crippled Android 4.0 on my device. I'd stay with Gingerbread or buy a native Android 4.0 device.
I wonder if it's possible to port Honeycomb onto SGS II...
I mean it does have the Specs to pull it off.
kinda off topic, but this is the best (and most useful) place to ask this.
What exactly OR IS rumoured/expected in this Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update?
I know it's meant to be a
- Big one that integrates 2.3.4 and 3.0.
- Rumours of hardware acceleration?
What else that's "big" or what new features are expected to be in this 4.0 update?!!??!?!
Everything in this thread is here-say. Where are your google release documents proving on-screen keys? Let me guess, your cousin's, uncle, brother has a buddy who knows the janitor at google right?
No one here knows what 4.0 will entail. Unless you work for Android team and are leaking stuff out.
So please stop posting crap, unless it is factual. Oh wait I forgot its the internet, everything is true.

Short answer is yes, our phone is way more than capable to run Honeycomb without any issues. I run it on my Nook Color (which's hardware is not even close at all to the SGS2) and it runs great.
Long answer is no, you won't be able to use it correctly since you would have to build and compile drivers yourself and then integrate them into HC (unless you find the drivers from a similar model, but good luck with that one).
On top of that, you won't want to do that since there's no phone application on HC (maybe on the 3G models, but there's not such a thing in the WiFi only models and neither on the HC SDK).
And yes, I'm sure we'll get ICS on our SGS2, it would not make sense at all not to get it on such a powerful phone.
All I can say is that if it won't be on SGS2 because of it rendering hardware buttons obsolete, then it basically won't be on ANY current phone.
As usual though, the rumour mills will be working overtime with pointless and unprovable statements like that. You'll have to wait and see.
And for what its worth, I definitely believe the SGS2 will get it (and possibly even the SGS1). Remember that no two android phones are ever the same in terms of OS anyway.
Edited to add: might not be Q4 but it will definitely get it.

I would say it would be better to be able to switch between 2.3 and 4.0 if anything, but it would probably still be better just to be running 4.0 as it is a combination of 2.3 and 3.2 anyway

Im not sure if Android 3.2 has this function intergrated it the system and it was only disabled, or some Devs here have to implement it in the OS.

Its high time we put social pressure on samsung with regards updates

Hi guys, let me just get down to the meat of the issue. I think its time we all come together and apply some form of social pressure on samsung concerning their update road map for the (second gen) galaxy tab series (10.1,8.9 and 7 plus) I paid about $575 for the 16gb 3G version of the galaxy tab 8.9 and almost returned it immediately because of the horrendous lag of the device (in landscape mode) when swyping across home screens and application grid. Thankfully I followed the advise of many here and installed a custom rom (in my case overcome) which made the device much more usable. What is most annoying is not just how samsung allowed such a laggy device to be released but also keeping mute about any update plans whatsoever. I am not even talking about ice cream sandwich, honeycomb 3.2 has been out for a couple of months now and all the major android honeycomb tablets (The Xoom and transformer) has received updates on their devices. even though mainly a bug fix release. Honeycomb 3.2 would go a long way to fix many of the annoyance currently experienced by galaxy tab owners.
I am not saying samsung should update my device tomorrow, but at least don't keep me in the dark. We all paid top dollars for their device hence the least they could do is to keep us informed on pending updates and also be damn fast about it. There is no doubt as to the legendariness of samsung's hardware awesomeness. Till date they have the best phone hardware in the market (galaxy s2 is the gold standard by which other mobile phones are measured) and their 2nd generation galaxy tab are the best tablets hardware ever. But samsung scores a zero when it comes to communicating with their users. It doesn't hurt to let your users know what is coming .. it removes the need for rumours and makes them even more loyal. And we are loyal bunch of users. Even though the world would have us believe that tablets start and ends with ipad. we stuck with samsung and all we ask is that they at least treat us with respect. Acknowledge by taking to us.
I can not describe the wave of jealousy I get everytime I hear acer talk about how their updates plans for ice cream sandwich and how the OG transformer would be receiving updates this year end, how the transformer is getting the second batch of ice cream sandwich updates.. all the while I am refreshing XDA forum waiting for a good Samaritan from the community to release the fix that I expected from samsung. I think this is unacceptable.
I don't think we sit milkly by and accept this kinda treatment from samsung. I think its time we take them to task using social media. I don't own a facebook account but I don't mind creating one. Its time we make our self heard and get samsung to listen to us.. Goal is simple. samsung needs to become more engaged with its fans and users. I mean what harm could come out of letting users know about update plans? what ill could come out of prompt updates to recent android release. I am a proud owner and the galaxy s2 and with that device I am not so much concerned with updates. But that is because the galaxy s2 is a master piece and runs fine as it is. I can not say the same about my galaxy tab 8.9.. The performance of that device could be better. software not hardware is behind the laggy performance which is why it pisses me to no small extent knowing they is a software update out there which fixes my issue. Other OEMs are releasing it to their devices (or engaging their users on future release) while samsung just keeps mute.
My goal is to get samsung to engage us their users more on update plans. or roadmap.
And To get them to be more speedy when it comes to releasing updates.
How do we go about this. looking at the success of how sustained facebook campaigns has worked for HTC, LG and motorolla users in the past, how it has gotten these companies to reverse policies which were unfriendly to their users. I think its time samsung galaxy tab users get on facebook and mount a sustained but peaceful and civil plea to samsung. Let us make our voices heard.
Its time we direct our inquiries directly to samsung. Hopefully we can raise enough dust that someone high up would push the button that makes the necessary changes.
Either way it's in samsung interest to be known as an OEM which listens to their users.
Its in their interest to be known as an OEM who always release updates for their device.
Does anyone share my thoughts on this?
About updates, it seems to me that Samsung produces a lot of updates every month, they just don't push them out. We get at least two leaked firmware a month. I'm ok with that because I don't like Kies anyway and Odin is easy to use. Android 3.2 seems to be out in Korea, so it can't be far for us, I expect the next leak to have it (KJ1?).
About the gt8.9 lag in landscape mode, unfortunately I think that's hardware problem. All tabs with tegra soc have this lag in portrait. For some unknown reason the gt8.9 screen is rotated 90 degrees (look in build.prop file) and that's why it has this problem in landscape. So I don't believe android 3.2 will fix this. Maybe ICS will, if it does do something very differently in launcher.

About updates, it seems to me that Samsung produces a lot of updates every month, they just don't push them out. We get at least two leaked firmware a month. Android 3.2 seems to be out in Korea, so it can't be far for us, I expect the next leak to have it (KJ1?)..

which brings me to the point of user engagement. Samsung could do better in that area. Its just hikes me when acer, motorola and HTC release update road map for their devices and we get nothing from samsung. They could do better in that regards
Maybe ICS will, if it does do something very differently in launcher

Your signature listed the xoom with hc 3.2.1 does that mean you still have same lag even with honeycomb 3.2?
we are not even sure about ICS samsung has not said anything officially about which device would get updated and when. (and no random comment from a samsung italian site/facebook page does not count as official)

Yes, Xoom with Android 3.2.1 still isn't smooth when changing homescreens in portrait. Like i already said, it's a known problem with all Tergra 2 Honeycomb tablets. Only new thing about GT8.9 is that in that case it's in landscape and not portrait. If you don't believe me, hold your tab in portrait and you will see how smooth the scrolling through homescreens is. I can't believe Samsung didn't know about this problem, it seems they just thought that we can live with it. I can and have lived with my Xoom and GT10.1 that have this problem in portrait mode and i have never complained about this issue because i rarely use the tablet in portrait. But having this problem in landscape... i'm starting to hate my GT8.9 which i bought just a few days ago. I'm now using GT8.9 with only one homescreen set up because i don't want to see this jerky scrolling.
All I care about is that we get an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM in a timely manner. Since Samsung is the launch partner with Google on ICS, they'd better do more than just try to sell the Galaxy Nexus.
I have to say that I'm not impressed with the lack of updates either -- a device of this caliber deserves to not be released and then ignored over time. Just like a desktop or laptop computer, I expect to apply updates on a regular basis to fix reliability and security bugs, at the OS level.
As if this ever worked. Are we in kindergarten or what?
So I'm in Canada and just got my galaxy 10.1 back from Samsung tech support (for repairs) and it came back with Honeycomb 3.2
I must say that it is wayyy smoother and better then 3.1
Now just give us a system dump so the rest of us can flash it

Picture, or it didn't happen. Also seems that some guys in Israel, I think, have also got it. JK1 that was called. I think Task650 is helping that guy to dump the system. Maybe I should mention that that was for 7510.

Turn it to portrait, is scrolling through homescreens still smooth? I don't think so.
It would definately be great to get updates more often.
But on the other hand I do not recall Samsung having ever published, promised etc. that they will provide updates on a regular basis. It's just a nice thing that happens and I think.
Howcome do people feel they have a right to regular free updates?

a bit more choppy, but not bad at all!
I don't think it will ever be iPad smooth... but way more bearable then when it was 3.1

If you have the time, I am sure some devs would love a system dump of 3.2 Here is a guide using adb: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-654561.html
Thanks!

I have no problem doing that except I am about to head out on a 3 week vacation. If no one else has done it by beginning of Dec (I get back the 3rd), I will gladly do it
You can't be serious. Vacation can wait, dump that image

I have the 7.0 Plus and its sort of smooth while swiping in either mode. It only stutters maybe 1 out of 10 swipes.
Sent from my GT-P6210 using xda premium

7.0+ doesn't have Tegra 2 SoC so this doesn't mean much, except it proves that its a hardware problem on Tegra tablets.
