Switching between 2.3 and 3.2 - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

its official that im getting this phone. But wouldn't it be nice if they made it possible to switch between android 2.3 and android 3.2.
Who's with me.

I would say it would be better to be able to switch between 2.3 and 4.0 if anything, but it would probably still be better just to be running 4.0 as it is a combination of 2.3 and 3.2 anyway

Not really, while Galaxy Nexus whit android 4 start in two or three weeks whit sell. So whit Android 3.2 youre allready on a previously version. And im not a develpoper, but i had a Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer, that are only pads, whitout phone function. Im not sure if Android 3.2 has this function intergrated it the system and it was only disabled, or some Devs here have to implement it in the OS.
Android 4 would be the better option to switch..

Android 4.0 ICS is two in one. That's what i want, 5.3' screen and vanilla ICS. If i could be certain that vanilla ICS will be ported to Note, i would buy the Note right now. But nobody knows this for sure, so i guess i end up buying the Nexus.

Well I guess it's pretty much save to say that Samsung will release an ICS update "soon". Knowing that people might skip the device due to no update announcement, they might just announce it officially tomorrow at the european release event in London..

Yes, but i don't want Touchwiz and the official update will certainly have it. I want vanilla ICS, but thats just me of course.

Silly Me
i forgot all about android 4.0 ICS. With it specs being better than the Samsung galaxy nexus prime, all but the processor which isnt really a big difference, i would hope that it come with ICS.

No, we may not see 3.2 officially from samsung this month, but i bet we see a leak of it before the end of august.
Xoom is also Google's flagship HC tablet so obviously they'll always get the latest updates first. Give it time. Maybe we'll have our 3.2 by the time ICS is out

Samsung is doing amazing job in hardware development. They really do but for software support the company simply s*cks.
For example Galaxy S is almost a year and a half old. This device sold more than 10 million units worldwide is one of the most successful smartphone ever and believe it or not it's still waiting to get Gingerbread.
And this is only one example. Almost every Samsung Android phone out there is suffering the same issue. Actually all with the exceptions of Nexus S and Nexus S 4G and that because Google itself is handling the software and pushing updates on those devices.
To make things worst Samsung will push the TouchWiz UI very soon. Which means now they have to make sure Touch UI is compatible with the latest Android version which take even more time. They always take their time to ensure compatibility with their stupid TouchWiz and they ALWAYS end up with extremely buggy results.
As for an early leak, what is the point of getting a beta software to an already buggy device?
If for any reason you believe that Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be an exception for Samsung, please feel free to share. I really like to know it.

I would disagree somewhat. The Galaxy S has been upgraded to Gingerbread on European versions of the phone. While updates for phones in the past have been lagging I would view that Samsung has taken a new approach as of late. The majority of the phones released around the same time period as the Galaxy S line have not received the Gingerbread update either. I would respond to you and ask for another cell phone manufacturer who is doing it better? Also besides zoom to fit (which spare parts will fix) there's not much benefit of 3.2 for us. The update adds zoom to fit, finally enables SD cards on the Xoom, and is more optimized to fit on 7" tablets i.e. 7-inch Huawei MediaPad.
As for Touchwiz I felt V3 was in need of much work (it does appear to be revamped a tad and smoother on the latest Fascinate GB leak) however V4 on the SGII has me sold on it being the default launcher on my phone. It is butter smooth and I love how it is laid out. If you were to poll the majority of Android users on XDA I would wager over 75% are unhappy with their stock manufacturer's launcher. I am looking forward to what Samsung will bring to the table.
I myself believe that Honeycomb is still very "beta-ish" in its current state. It was rushed and is extremely buggy. I think releasing the source code would help immensely as devs could iron out bugs (which they nicely do for Google now on the phone side). However, I do not believe it will be released before a transition into Ice Cream Sandwich.

It's not just about smaller screen tablets. It brings some small bug fixes also:
There is no lag on up side down home screen. Portrait is also better but not much.
Browser seems a little faster and typing a message on XDA doesn't lag as bad as it did on 3.1
I was also planning to buy SGT, but now I'm not sure anymore. I don't want to wait for updates. In this regard, the US Xoom is the best tablet. Only downside is that the US 3G version doesn't work in Europe and i want a tablet with 3G connectivity.
I got the update(wifi Only). Any one have a clue how to access it? Or make Sgt use it? The SD card i mean..lol
There isn't a 3.2 update for Galaxy Tab, and there is no SD card either. Troll somewhere else
I've been a forum reader/poster for over 20 years. Seen many things and read many posts. I know trolls and I know funny.
It's safe to say that the threads that I've read on the XDA forums have the most people with lack of sense of humor than any I've been a part of.
Why is that?
I didn't think it was funny... It was a clear troll post.
Could the 10.1 run 3.2 from the Zoom, or does it have to be made specifically for the Samsung 10.1?
Because supposedly reverse landscape and portrait mode performance are improved, near regular landscape performance.
Thanks for making my point.

Official ICS for our tab?

Read this article. It mentions other Samsung devices confirmed as getting ICS. Is the "galaxy tab 7" our device, or is it referring to the "plus" version?

It hasn't been 'unconfirmed' yet so you never know. .....
Sorry guys, but theres no ICS upgrade forthcoming from official channels. Samsung has confirmed that the entire Tab line, EXCEPT for the original (ours) will be getting the upgrade. Custom builds are likely in development with source code available but there'll be nothing official.

I think you are right
I'm not holding my breath. They made it pretty clear they weren't going to give it a Honeycomb upgrade, why would they do ICS?. After all, they would much rather you buy their new tablets.
Shame, thank god for the wonderful devs on here Personally, I think Samsung owes it to the people who went out and bought this tab to give us an official upgrade
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
I highly doubt that Samsung will offer an official upgrade to ICS for the original Tab. However, am I right in thinking that the hardware in the Tab basically matches the SoC and memory configuration in the Nexus S? If so surely that bodes well for the ability of the Tab to eventually run ICS seeing as the Nexus S will receive and official version of ICS.
Samsung doesn't even bother to give Gingerbread update for P-1010 and you would like ICS? Get serious. And no devs here bother to do anything for P-1010 also, not even CWM. This line of tabs is forgotten from anybody. If you want ICS buy yourself a proper tablet.

Possibly true for other Samsung devices but the P1000 and P1010 (and associated variants) will *not* receive an ICS update. Unfortunately, Samsung confirmed that the newer ones would be the only ones from the Tab line to get ICS.

From qhat I've read: no
I see no reason not to get it... Nexus S got it and runs it ultra fast. That means Galaxy S is more than capable of running it! Also, Nexus S needed to be updated to 2.3.6 to be able to upgrade. I believe we will see leaks for our devices as well. I think that is one reasons Samsung never released TouchWiz 4 for our device, I believe it will come in this ICS update (if they make one).

Day dreaming? Why would they port the old crappy TouchWiz 3 on ICS when they have an already ported and new version of TouchWiz 4?
Also... Samsung Wave got TouchWiz 4 in Bada 2.0 update, I don't see why Galaxy S won't get it in ICS (both are HUGE updates and both devices share the same hardware).

I hate android fragmentation. SGS is capable to run ICS withouth any problems but its questionable will samsung release update. That fragmentation will cost android, now or later but it will damage androids reputation.

Isn't it pathetic that Samsung cant release ICS update even for its flagship phone 'Galaxy S2' even after 3.5 months after the official ICS release? With the Android release cycle being 6 to 8 Months, 3.5 to 4 months is a long time for update release.

+1, except that I never had any initial excitement really. Froyo to Gingerbread - while welcome - wasn't earth-shattering in terms of new functions etc, and I can't see GB to ICS titillating me immensely either. Very little I don't like about Gingerbread.
Been on the same ROM for 9 weeks, a new PB (have flashed updates though).
I'll just wait patiently for the SGS3 - Samsung would have to bork it quite spectacularly for me not to buy it.
Looking forward to trying this out, but not expecting the world to change.

Jelly Bean 5.0

I just found information that the unveiling of the new Jelly Bean 5.0 will be in Q2, so when we get 4.0 it is going to be already old and I doubt that we will get the update to 5.0

Jelly Bean will fokus Tablet-devices. Have you ever seen a mobile running HoneyComb? HC was also built for tablets. I think JellyBean won´t gain the user experience on a mobile. Google advertise the JB functions with "dualboot with windows 8 - due to implemented chrome os". I don´t really think that it would hit our Notes. Beside from that point, would you use your Note with small density but with a tablet os as a daily driver?!

Why would google release a tablet OS after merging both lines rather successfully? And I do use my Note with ICS tablet mode as daily driver.
Also, we'll probably see Jelly Bean phones come out after a while, ICS was previewed in May 2011 but was released in November.

I was looking forward to use it that way ever since I bought the note. Then I finally had the chance to try imilka's aosp ics in tablet mode. It was like a dream come true at first but then I noticed letters look so small making it unpractical as a daily driver. But where is the logic? Google makes Honeycomb, and it fails big time (let's be honest guys, it did) so they make ICS which will unify Android again and it will run on both phones and tablets. A part of the fragmentation is gone.
But not for long..
Jelly Bean! Lets do the same mistake again.
I'm sorry, but no. They can't be that dumb. Android releases a new version of the OS every year. I guess we'll get a preview of JB at Google I/O, and it'll get released sooner this year, like last year. By releasing a tablet-only OS, the phone OS will be lagging behind.
It's bull****.

Sounds perfectly logical to me.
As ics is an update to the phone software, namely GB, and honeycomb hasnt had an updated version as yet it seems likely that Jellybean would be tablet focused, although it is possible to install it, its not going to have the comms requirements to be able to use the note as anything else but a tablet.
I hope android 5.0 is for phones, but i seriously doubt that google would release 2 major versions of their os within such a short period of time when ics is going to be concentrated on for a long time to come, so back to the start of the post, i think hes right, 5.0 will likely be for tablets, which is great news, honeycomb is really nice on the tablet, but to get an update would be awesome.

First of all, yes, ICS is just as much an update to HC. There is nothing phone-specific about it and as should be fairly obvious, there's plenty of tablet available with ICS nowadays. Secondly, no, Google went to great lengths to unify both the tablet version of Android and the phone version of it, they won't start breaking the unification again.
I hope android 5.0 is for phones, but i seriously doubt that google would release 2 major versions of their os within such a short period of time when ics is going to be concentrated on for a long time to come

As said, Google shot itself in the foot by separating phone and tablet versions of Android. ICS was the first step in unifying them. The plan has always been to do a new major version once a year and obviously ICS was last-year.
, so back to the start of the post, i think hes right, 5.0 will likely be for tablets, which is great news, honeycomb is really nice on the tablet, but to get an update would be awesome.

Install ICS on your tablet then. There is absolutely nothing stopping you.

Google advertise the JB functions with "dualboot with windows 8 - due to implemented chrome os".

No, they don't. That's unsubstantiated fanboy-rumour. There is no way of dual-booting Windows 8 and another OS unless Microsoft specifically allows it for several reasons: Windows 8 requires the system to have SecureBoot enabled and not disableable and that Microsoft will not sell the ARM-version of Windows 8 to anyone else than official Microsoft-partners.
Go ahead and google a bit, read about SecureBoot and you'll see already why that is just a rumour.
JellyBean will possibly have dual-boot, yes, but it won't support Win8; it'll be for booting between Android and ChromeOS, and possibly Linux.
Honeycomb was a band-aid release to give manufacturers an OS that ran semi-decently on tablets as the existing 2.x releases wouldn't scale properly and were completely unsuitable (didn't stop some manufacturers using it though, e.g. the original Galaxy Tab).
There's some info as well as the usual assortment of blind speculation in this article: http://www.techradar.com/news/softw...-things-we-want-to-see-in-android-5-0-1036013
Also info from a press conference regarding how ICS will unify the tablet & phone UI's: http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/01/nvi...ice-cream-sandwich-to-unify-android-platform/
Unless Google would like to commit OS-suicide, there is no waythey would release a separate version for "larger" devices at this stage. The "fragmentation" issue is bad enough as it is without them back pedalling, there will only be one combined Android OS for all devices from ICS onwards.
Regardless though, odds of the Note getting Jellybean via an official release is basically nil. I for one won't care, by the time it'd be likely to actually be available I'll probably have a newer device anyway.
Yeah as linked above, google publicly stated they are merging tablet and phone OS into a single code base and ICS would be it. Sure enough we got ICS just like they said. Not in a million years are they gonna fork suddenly. They flat out said so.

Certainly hope so my friend, it is good news indeed if they are concentrating on one solid sytem for all devices, that would be awesome, although, i wont Knock Honeycomb and ive never updated from it because like so many others i need stability and have feared venturing into the unknown abyss so far, honeycomb is great software and works well enough so im not too worried, once ics official is released then i will have a look at it.
But yer thanks for all the feedback guys, thats great to hear that Jellybean is going to be multisystem and with the info youve provided then yes id have to agree with you all that it probably is going to be multiplatform, which is what id initially hoped it would be, great stuff.
Any speculation on month of release, of course its difficult to guess bearing in mind ICS seems to have been around for quite a while now, but its really all down to when samsung are going to release it, i know they said Q1 for ics but it hasnt happened thus far, so i cant imagine JB would be at the start of Q2, my suspicion is most definitley for closer to the end of 2012 or start of 2013.

The release of Jelly Bean is in no way or form connected to when phone manufacturers ship ICS. ICS was already shown back in May in 2011, so that's almost a year ago now. Also, Jelly Bean is not as much of changing the fundamentals of Android as an OS as ICS was, it's more about honing the little things, smoothing the corners and putting the dressing on top like e.g. voice control.
That said, I assume JB will be released during Q3, not Q2. It'll likely be previewed during Q2, though, and that's when Google will announce the up-and-coming features and fixes.
When will Chocolate marshmellow be released!? I wonder if we'll get that update...

Android never released versions A and B, those names are lost... As far as the public is concerned, it started with :
Cupcake
Donut
Eclair
Froyo
Gingerbread
Honeycomb
Ice Cream Sandwhich
Jelly Bean
...
You missed your chance with C... marshmallow still holds a chance!
ICS was previewed in May 2011 and launched in October 2011. Over 5 months later ICS can only be found in 2-3% of current Android devices.
I have to wonder how putting on even more pressure on developers and raising the frustration of the users by launching version 5.0 while the huge majority is still waiting for the v4 update could help your market share.
This is a good read regarding this issue : http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Jelly-Bean-Android-Gingerbread-Ice-Cream-Sandwich,news-14545.html
