How to make a backup with stock build? - HTC Aria General

I have an Aria and I was going to update it to the AT&T Froyo build that just came out today. The phone is not rooted.
If I use Astro to make a backup of my personal data, when I try to load the backup AT&T's restriction message pops up about not allowing third party apps.
So is there any app that can make a backup that does not run into AT&T's sideloading block?

If you root your phone, you will have much better options available to backup your phone. First using ClockworkMod Recovery you would be able to do a full 'nandroid' backup which will preserve your current running system in full and would allow you to revert back if you didn't like something new.
Second, it would allow you to flash a rooted version of the AT&T Froyo 2.2 update and if you didn't like it allow you to restore your previous 'nandroid' backup.
If you simply you a backup app on your non-rooted system and you run the stock AT&T Froyo update, you will not be able to go back.

Well the phone isn't mine, it's my sister's and she usually is petrified when it comes to hacking electronics I know the many benefits of rooting and if it weren't on the stock AT&T build I know this wouldn't be an issue. But is there any other alternative for an unrooted Aria?
I think it is utterly dumb for AT&T and HTC to say "we have an update for you but you will lose your data unless you back it up" and when you try to back it up they don't let you because AT&T has closed off sideloading. Of course this wouldn't be an issue if AT&T themselves provided a way to backup the phone but they do not and thats where my frustration lies.

You won't be able to make a ROM backup because it has no recovery. You can backup apps and then install by allowing unknown sources, or you can move them to the SD. only the phone ROM will be deleted. Not your SD or SIM

But in the Aria they have removed the option to allow Unknown Sources, which is my main problem.
On the last minor update the Aria had, I used Astro to make a backup of the apps and files. After I completed the update, I installed Astro and when I tried to load the backup there was a message that popped up that said the phone could not accept data from unknown sources.
Also, the Aria is on 2.1 right now so I cannot move the apps to SD because that feature is only in 2.2.

They removed it? Maybe it starts in 2.2? Go look on the market for app2sd. Anyways I know liberated FR007 and 8 had unknown sources. 2.1 did not and i don't know about 2.2. Remember if you update to 2.2 through at&t you cannot root your phone as it fixes hboot exploit. There may not be a work around, even though it is your sisters I would think about rooting it if not just to backup your stuff
I am using HTC Aria rooted with clockwork 2.5 and cyanogenmod 7, with hboot .57

Ok I will check out Apps 2 SD and see if that works. As long as I can save the apps without my sis having to go back and reinstall everything it will be worth it.

custom roms and upgrading to 2.1

So whenever Sprint pushes its 2.1 update, will those of us with rooted heroes and custom roms have to unroot in order to receive the update? Or will we have to wait for the custom roms to support 2.1?
Just wondering, because I really want and like 2.1 but I don't want to wipe my data.
More than likely the debate here will have a 2.1 build that's fully functional long before Sprint pushes one but even if they don't after it. Gets pushed out the debate here will have one that supports root. If you ruu and take the ota update it may correct the security exploit that was used to root so you would have to wait until someone found a way to root it again.
Be pacient we have great devs on here it will only be a matter of time.
Dang predictive text
basically, wait until we have a ROM here to upgrade, don't get OTA if you want to keep root access. You might not be able to get it back
Source code released yesterday, so won't be much longer.
bye the time sprint pushes an update, there will be 3 other android phones to chose from.
edit: new android phones at sprint i mean
Yeah, Sprint sucks with updates being released in a timely manner. With my bberry, I was always using other carriers to update.
So I guess the consensus is to wait for our devs to get a full 2.1 rom working rather than unrooting and upgrading ota.
When the new dev roms come out, I was also wondering if I could save all my data, or how i could save all my data if a wipe was required.
If your phone is rooted, I would recommend an app from the market called "Backup for Root Users".

Thanks. I'll try that. Do you have any experience using it with one of the dev roms that need wipes? I am considering switching from modaco 2.0 to the aosp 2.1 but my concern was getting all my data back.
Ya it works. After you restore everything, you need to hard restart the phone (SEND+MENU+END) or it will be real slow until you do hard reset it.

Maybe there's a special way to do it, or maybe you don't backup everything, but Backup for Root Users totally effed up my restore when I moved from Fresh 1.1 to Modaco 2.0.
Actually, I tried Backup for Root Users, Astro File Manager, Titanium Backup, all of them sucked. (even after a fresh wipe of course)
I finally went back to my Fresh nandroid backup because I was getting so many FC's.
Maybe it was because it copied the APK's + "System Data" that did it, but it certainly didn't work, not smoothly anyway. :/
I've never had issues with Backup for Root Users. It takes time to restore everything & it is highly recommended that you hard reset your phone it it is finished restoring.

I've moved from Fresh to MoDaCo without wiping and it has worked just fine.
I have a backup made from Fresh, and I am planning on flashing AOSP 2.1 soon. I'll try the restore tool and tell you how it works. If it doesn't...That's what nandroid backups are for.
I have a question related to this topic. I have a rooted Hero with TTG 1.6 ROM running. Seems like right now, if I wanted to switch to a different ROM like Fresh, all I ever needed to do is copy the zip file to the SD root, reboot while holding the Home button down, and select "Install from .zip" or however it's phrased. When a new 2.1 ROM comes out, would it be that simple, or would there be more steps involved since the ROM isn't based on the current 1.5?

[Q] Froyo is just days away, What are you going to do with your Apps?

So we all know the Real Deal Froyo 2.2 is coming in just a few days away.
Have any of you though of an upgrade path for the installed apps currently running on 2.1?
There's a few ways to go about this:
- Wipe everything & start a'new
- Backup Apps & Settings, then restore it to Froyo
- Backup only Apps but no Settings & re-install everything after Froyo
- Undo the lag fix, flash back to stock ROM, then upgrade to Froyo, and wipe everything in the process.
- Other methods (please provide details)
Personally I'm inclined to #2 but I read people having complications with this process, so I might end up doing it the #3 way, but.... 400+ apps it's a bit crazy to go reinstalling all that, it'll take me probably 2 days to reconfigure all those apps/games
I'm glad i have an AppsBrain account, so i just need to hit Sync and it will re-install all those apps for me, but i still need to set all the settings again... that's going to be a royal pain in the arsenal
I am going with a complete fresh everything. Full factory reset first then format mem cards then upgrade, then factory reset again and maybe even another reformat. Not taking any blinking chances this time!
Also moving from a Gmail account to a Google Apps account so that should be interesting!
Appbrain reinstall
Roll on 2.2
How does Google/Samsung expect the average user to cope with an upgrade? By re-doing everything from scratch?
Appbrain helps but it's still a bit of an annoying process and it re-downloads everything from the net which slows things down. Restoring settings is impossible without rooting and may have problems when going from 2.1-2.2 so that's way out of reach to the average user.
Android seriously needs a better way of handling updates.
Personally I'm already on the JPC Froyo firmware so hopefully the official release is easy to root. Then I can just restore everything with Titanium Backup.
yeah no kidding, they don't even let you save or backup the files via KIES, so that you can restore them later.
in all other mobile phones, BlackBerry, PalmOS, Windows Mobile, Iphone
all of them will automatically create a backup of your stuff inside the phone, before it does the upgrade, so that after the upgrade it will automatically reload all your stuff back into the phone.
In Android we are lacking that, both times i've upgraded from one ROM to another ROM, it forced a full wipe on the phone.
luckily it was from a 2.1 to 2.1 so you can easily restore a back up from Titanium Backup, or any favourite backup Apps of your choice.
but I've read a lot of postings about people having problems when they restore the settings from 2.1 to 2.2
Apparently it's okay to restore all the Apps from 2.1 to 2.2 but you can't really restore the settings as it will crash 2.2
so even being able to restore all 400+ apps, i'll still need to spend countless hours to reconfigure them all
at least that saves me the 800+ clicks to OK install OK accept permission for each of the 400+ apps in my inventory. LOL

it's only because kies does not work that we have to wipe and install via pc on a samsung.

that's comforting to know... so Samsung is not mature enough on the App+scripting+upgrade side of things
yes Kies does not provide an option to backup/restore the stuff during a firmware upgrade

Behold II owners were promised a 2.1 update which went awry so those not willing to risk flashing a non-vendor ROM are stuck with 1.6. It was about that time that Samsung started to concentrate on the Galaxy range of handsets.
Hopefully they won't do the same thing when the SGS II is released...
Odd reading this as when I upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 JPC totally unintentionally it kept all my data and settings as well as the apps. The problem was that the data was configured to 2.1 and so I got loads of force closes so had to uninstall and reinstall all the apps so it ended up quicker doing a factory reset and starting from scratch.
On my rooted hero I went from custom 2.1 rom did a titanium backup with apps and settings flashed 2.2 downloaded titanium again restored and got everything back with settings.
We need to be allowed to store the ROMs on the phone and use recovery like on rooted phones. I much prefer that way of doing it. we should have the option in instead of risking bricking your phone if your computer crashed. Also have an updated app like with the villainroms much similar.
Looking at the app ak notes I have entries dating back November 16 last year. Wiped rom update was a few months back saving settings brought all the data back when I restored.

As one of the option at the poll says, is it necessary to undo lagfix before flashing? Wouldn't flashing wipe off the 2GB partition?
froyos floating around dont delete your data. but its often recommended to factory reset anyway to avoid troubles. in any case better safe than sorry. titanum backup works in free mode. backup all and copy the titanium backup dir from the phones internal sdcard to the external one or to your pc. youll be glad you did if you ever run into troubles.

[Q] How to choose which Root? Need Simple & Uninstallable

I just got an Epic 4g, it has Froyo.EC05, Firmware 2.2.1, Kernel: 2.6.32.9, Hardware v.D700.0.5
I don't want to put a rom on my phone. I just want to have root access so I can uninstall some of the stock apps, I REALLY want the wifi hotspot and I need the ability to set it back to it's stock again easy enough. I have a pc with Win7 Ultimate 64-bit and the drivers already installed and running ok. I just need to know which root program is best for a simple setup like I want and gives me just the wifi hotspot and stock app remover.
Thanks.
~Z
Use One-Click-Root CWM 3.0.2.5 to root your phone.
Use Titanium backup from the market to uninstall the bloatware
Some bloatware cannot be uninstalled, search around and find out what can and cant be uninstalled.
Then you are done.
If you ever need to send your phone back to sprint, Use the program ODIN to return your phone to stock.
It's that simple, but not that simple. Watch the video. It'll make waaay more sense.

In my signature, click the Stock Rom link, in the first post is a CWM flashable zip for the stock samsung recovery and the stock rom. You'd have to root, make a nandroid backup in cwm, then when you need to unroot, wipe data/cache 3x and flash the ReRFS rom, let that boot, then go back to cwm, restore the backup, then reboot. Go back to cwm and flash the samsung stock recovery. But, you'd only *need* to unroot if you have to take it back to sprint.

Thanks xanderman, but I hate to sound like a noob, but I'm a windows/pc guy...I've had a windows phone since the early ipaq's, when the phone and the pim were separate devices... all i've had since then is Windows phones too, up to my Tilt 2, which I just traded in for my Epic 4G. So all this root/linux sounding Android stuff is VERY new to me and I have NO IDEA what you just said in your wonderful instructions up there about how to unroot my phone. I've noticed that a few apps don't seem to like the fact that my phone is rooted. And the only reason I did it was to have the ability to do Wifi Hotspot and for being able to have more apps installed on my sd card rather than the phone memory, although that was before I knew that Android phones have dedicated memory for apps, unlike Windows phones which shared memory between the app storage and app running. So if I had a ton of apps installed, the phone would crawl... same for too many txt msgs... but with the Android system, that's not a problem...

If you can figure out the above, you might just need to odin to stock. Basically CWM(ClockworkMod) is a custom recovery mode that let's rooted users flash new roms/themes/etc to the phone. Basically, you hold Volume up/down, camera and power buttons, wipe data in clockworkmod 3 times, then choose the "install zip from /sdcard" option, find the stock rom I mentioned(the one in my signature) and install it. Then reboot, wait 5 minutes. Go back to ClockWorkMod, and then advanced restore the data section of your backup(always make a "nandroid" backup before flasing your first anything), install the Stock Samsung Recovery(the only reason for this step would be if you have to return it for whatever reason), and you'll have an unrooted epic 4g.

You can always.use gingerbreak to root your phone. If your not worried about roms then u don't need a custom recovery. Using gingerbreak will just give u root and that is what u want.

Ummm...
So this is just my two cents here, but...everyone here is recommending the experimental version of wifi tether. Which I disagree with. Its easier to just go to the market and search "wireless tether".
"But squshy! Wireless tether doesn't do infrastructure mode! It only does ad hoc!"
I know. But ALL the OP wants to do is tether to his laptop. In which case, the market wireless tether will work perfectly. You don't even have to worry about using special steps to get it to tether 4g.
Plus, the experimental wifi tether is...buggy. I would think that a simple user such as yourself would rather have a stable reliable program over one that frequently reboots itself. (And ad hoc really isn't that bad guys. Its not like the guy wants to tether his xbox360 like everyone else here )

Idk about Titanium, but nandroid is the Backup/restore feature in cwm. When you install something from the sdcard, its a flashable zip. Like the stock rom in my signature, that's a flashable zip. And yes, odin wipes everything.

Froyo updaters

These are questions for thoses that have used the official update from motorola.
1) Did you have to unroot before updating?
2) Did you have to wipe your phone before the update?
3) Was the update successful?
4) If it was successful, were you able to successfully root again? If so how?
5) If successfully rooted, were you then able to get rid of crapware from ATT?
6) Did you have any problems with the update detecting a non-oem battery? I bought my phone used off ebay so not sure if the battery is oem or not.
Thanks for your help. Im not ready to brick my phone, or not be able to charge my battery if the update doesnt work.
I was able to successfully update my wife's phone this weekend. Her's was not rooted before the update. I wanted to successfully root her's before I update mine. I was able to root her phone with SuperOneClick. After rooting I removed some of the preinstall AT&T stuff.
I'm planning on flashing mine back to stock before updating.

Upgraded, but...
I successfully updated to the motorola froyo official release. Im loving how much faster everything runs. Able to root successfully with superoneclick and used titanium backup to remove att crapware. However here is my issue. I used link2sd previously on eclair. Had about 50+ apps on phone with about 40% give or take free. So I was so excited about the apps to sd in froyo. Well, I tried putting back all my apps, using an app I got from market for apps2sd and link2sd for those unable to move per the app. With link2sd, I lost no phone space but as the apps that could be moved got moved to the sd via the market app, my phone space went BYE BYE. Down to 0% free. WTH is going on? I just did a factory reset and am going to try just link2sd and see what happens. Anyone else running into this problem or am I alone in this?
Ok, so
I used just link2sd and had no problems with memory. For some reason, using any app2sd app or the built in move to sd eats up my memory. Makes no sense to me at all, but I now have all my apps back, linked and at 40% free space. Strange.
This is why you should read....
Link2d... moves apk, davlik cache, and lib file...
App2d just moves the apk... so the cache and the library are still installed on /data/

Edit: you can use titanium backup to take stuff off installed by apps2sd
New Problem
Im having a problem with the phone freezing up now. Only way to remedy is to remove battery. Anyone else?
Yup... though for me its not freezing... the screen shuts off... its still running though...
I could charge it... and somehow once either voice command or vlingo started up... and the white notification led that I didn't know the phone had was flashing

Yea i'm having the same issue. I used to have this same issue when I had the motorola backflip. It would always freeze up th first couple times after I flashed a new ROM. After a coulpe times of restarting and pulling the battery, eventually it just fixed itself...hopefully this is the case with this and its not a permanent problem
I have not seen any freezing issues with either of the 2 Flipsides that I have updated.
I hope so too, cuz having to pull the battery at least 5-8 times a day is really frigging annoying! At least it starts much faster than eclair did.
Hello!
I would like to ask for some help about updaters since I was reading some posts of the forum and the mixed results/reports may seems somewhat confuse, so , I would like to ask about help with info about these details in order to try to make an succesfull update froma Beta installed flipside phone without brick it.
1) Anyone of the succesfull updaters were made from a phone with BETA 2.2 installed?
2) In case that update was made from a BETA 2.2 phone, which was the way used to do the succesfull update
a-With Official 2.2 file and Moto windows software?
b-With Official 2.2 file and Linux flash-sbf software?
c-With Official 2.2 file and the in-phone menu option for update.
d-With Official 2.2 file in SD card RENAMED to the name: update.zip and using option in boot recovery menu?
3) Any Update to Official Froyo 2.2 from a BETA 2.2 installed phone was succesfull AFTER a downgrade to eclair 2.1 rom official rom file and WITHOUT BRICKING the phone in the process?
Thank You very much for kind help and best regards!

1) I did not unroot my phone before doing the update. I had rooted using Sideloadwonder and z4Root.

3) Yes my update was successful.
4) I was able to root the update with Superoneclickv2.1.1
5) I have uninstalled most of the bloatware from ATT using Titanium backup.
6) I am running an OEM battery so I cannot answer this question.

How to back up Apps without root??

Am using Tibu to back up apps now, but am going to 'attempt' to flash a new ROM that's rooted and just in case it doesn't go as planned and I lose root, I'd like to know if there's a app or whatever that allows a unrooted phone the same or near same options and ability to back up apps that Tibu has. Any animal like that exist???
No, Titanium Backup is as powerful as it is because of root access. Without that, there is no way to get the same functionality, no matter what app you're using.
And if you're trying to flash a rooted ROM to a phone that's already higher than 4.4.4, you aren't going to find success...

This shouldn't even be a concern.. You're missing the most important step in flashing a new ROM. It should be in every single ROM thread, for any device here on XDA, its usually the first on the list of instructions...?
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM!!
You do this in your custom recovery, TWRP, CWM or Phils...
This restores your system exactly as it was, when you made the backup, your call logs, messages, apps, app datas, even app caches, if you select it when making the backup..
Backups are one of the main purposes for a custom recovery, if you screw up, you can always go back..
Were you not aware of this till now??
Unless you're intention is to stick with the ROM, that's not rooted.. Not sure why you'd want that, but everyone's different, so I'd recommend using Helium instead of TB, root isn't required with that app..
I'm not on a developer edition. It does not have a unlocked bootloader, so not sure I can 'go back' if the thing doesn't work right. Maybe I'm wrong. But I've heard once you flash past 4.4 there is no going back to root and I'm going to 6. In the past on unlocked units I've had no problems going back. But locked is another animal...it's rooted but not unlocked...
