It seems like the custom ROMs out right now are for the international version, right?
There should be ROMs coming for US-specific (IE, Vibrant), correct? I just don't want to get something I cannot customize. What scares me is that Samsung will update it to 2.2 and not release 3.0 later on?
Coming from the Touch Pro 2 scene where there are lots of variations as well, there should be roms that are compatible with multiple handsets and even some geared towards specific phones. Additional add-ons might be required for button layouts or something but I'm not sure how it works since I am speaking with experience only in the Windows Mobile area.
Regarding the update, it's really hard to tell since we don't even have the 2.2 update yet. But hopefully, they'll continue to support the Galaxy S as it's Samsung's direct iPhone competitor.
We should be able to flash any firmware for the galaxy s including the modaco rom. The real question is will we be able to get a hacked recovery to stick like amon_ra or cynogen ? Ps my phone comes this week im freaking excited!!

I'm excited to and I'm exited to be apart of building the vibrant section hopefully can atleast beat out the captivate and fascinate page
Thursday morning I'm waking up early and picking this baby up. I hope we can gain root the same way as the international version.

same going to be at the store 9 am to pick it up then head straight to xda for a root and a cfw that would be a dream
Hopefully the source code that was released by Samsung for the Galaxy S is the same for the Vibrant, which I see no reason why it would change but it is Samsung. If it is, I will help to port CM6 over to the Vibrant. The source code from Samsung that I downloaded yesterday has from what I could see with my quick glance over the drivers (baseband, sound, screen, etc) that would be needed to bake up a custom ROM.
That would be so awesome. I really don't care about samsung supporting this phone, as long as they let devs do their thing. Meaning not to lock up anything ala droid x

It doesn't matter if they don't officially update it to 3.0, when there is root, there is a way!

not nessecarily true lol, take a look at the Motorola Milestone for an example, they have had root for a long time now, but cant load a custom rom due to an encrypted bootloader.
That's why I'm saying that if samsung doesn't do it, let the community have what it needs to do it themselves, look at cyan. My g1 should've been obsolete a year ago, but on the contrary its as strong as it was when I first rooted it.

If the drivers are there, 90% of the work is done. We'll have the latest roms (barring some unlikely extreme performance requirements).

Haven't checked in a while but the Behold 2 was a pain in the ass to root. And Samsung said that they didn't want people hacking their phones. That was a few months ago, since I don't have the phone I haven't checked back. I'm getting this bad boy and hopefully there will be a lot of support for it.

Second that. Took me 1 minute. Maybe less, LOL. Running tests, everything seems to be working, SU permisions et al.
Not sure on boot, but it seems that Samsung didn't even try to make it hard.
I went back to winmo for a while, and while the HD2 community is great, have to say glad to be back on android.

it isnt fixing the issue from what I read. AT&T also never mentions a GPS fix.
The more and more time that goes by, the more and more I want a G2 when it comes out honestly. Sumsung really dropped the ball here and its going to leave a bad taste in a lot of people's minds for a long time...

You know what, I think Samsung is 50 percent to Blame. The other 50 percent is T-Mobile. T-MOBILE...simply does not support their phones.
Buying the G2 will be the same damn story. Sure it will come with 2.2, but as soon as 3.0 comes along, every other carrier will have it months before T-Mobile releases it on the G2, and you will cry and complain "the more and more I want Verizon."
I honestly think the problem is T-Mobile, and not so much the handset manufacturers.
tmobile is throwing Samsung under the bus, I got this back from a message I sent to Tmobiles facebook a bit ago..
Robert,
We understand your interest on updates Samsung is working on one and as soon as we have any more information on this we will communicate it.
.. notice they say that Samsung is working on one, I did ask about 2.2 though and not the gps fix.

Honestly, my biggest regret was leaving at&t. I left because I wasn't interested in an iphone, I noticed no good new WM apps were coming along, and I wanted a 3.5 mm headphone jack on my phone. The nexus filled all those needs so when it was released I jumped ship to t-mobile. I found out the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
I still have no idea why people say T-Mobiles customer support is better than AT&T; from everything I've seen it isn't even close.
Someone else posted on here before about T-Mobiles BB getting upgraded to V.5 not too long ago.. they have 6 out or it's close to release. T-Mobile does lack in this "Software/Firmware" Update department. They have some decent phones but don't support them enough.
It's amazing, when the G1 came out, yes it was the first Android phone but updates rolled out pretty quick. I know it was stock "Vanilla" Android but updates were addressed in a timely manor. But now they have the My Touch, My Touch Slide and Cliq series and now the Galaxy S phone.
Wow everyone is a bunch of goddamn vultures here. Waaah I've had my phone a month and a half Samsung and T-Mobile suck I want my updates waaah. People need to realize that updates need to go through a lot of steps. If you don't like your phone return it and get a different one.

So what its perfectly ok for other Galaxy S phones that haven't been out as long as the Vibrant to be getting their updates, but not us? Honestly, I really think it has to do a lot with TMO and not Sammy. Luckily, I've rooted and running a custom ROM and Voodoo fix. I also know that doing that is not for everyone though.
The Captivate came out what like 3 days after the Vibrant? Maybe tmo and Samsung are waiting to see how the update goes on the Captivate. It wont matter anyways we could get it tomorrow and people will still complain that it's not 2.2 or their phone is still not fast enough or some other bullcrap.

Your joking right? First almost 2 1/2 months. Second the others all got a update as mentioned.
All other phones with 1ghz are running froyo, even a hd2 without android has it.lom
I vote we get /b/ to start ****. Maybe then we might get some movement from T-Mo and Samsung... just me? >.>
not that it will do anything to Tmobile but I've decided that whoever gets 2.2 on the Galaxy S device first is who I will be switching to. If its Tmobile then I won't be going anywhere, but if another carrier can get it out before Tmobile see ya.
Tmobile launched this device First int he US there is no reason they should not be the first to release the OS update even if it takes them till November
I do agree that they need to support their phones better. But at least TMO isn't forcing bing down our throats either.
I come from the Blackberry side of the fence and I remember when 5.0 devices were new last year it took forever for TMO to release an update for the 9700, and that original release was filled with bugs. I finally gave up on waiting for them and simply downloaded another carrier's release. Easy to do on that platform.
I like the Vibrant for the most part. Yes it has bugs; yes it's quality needs to be improved. Yes the GPS kind of sucks. But what other high-end phone out there doesn't have issues these days? I'm sure the G2 will have them as well.

other than for tethering I really don't see the need for more than 4-5 mbps speed... sure is good to say you have it but on a phone? I'm currently very happy with the speed of my vibrant, Pandora works well, music downloads are fast, pocket cloud works well on 3g, voip calling... I wonder if 4g is more of an energy hog than 3g... that would be awful, last time I checked we were still using li-ion batteries...
1g internal memory
im jealous of the 4g internet speed and slightly about the fcc. but it has 1gig memory on board.. thats stupid lame. might find a way to get one .
I agree with MTC44 that having this new phone out can only help the devs get us better 2.2 and a better FFC mod. I am content reaping the benefits of this new phone without having to shell out the extra cash. I am also fine with the small speed boost that I already have from the HSPA+ network without having to buy a whole new 4g phone. There's always going to be something new and bleeding edge out there. Why get upset because it's an upgraded Vibrant? If it hadn't been that, it would have been something else. At least we can use some of the advancements from this phone.
That being said, if Samsung & TMo don't get us original Vibrant owners a stock 2.2 release before Vibrant 4g is released, that would show that they have abandoned us and that they have a very high disregard for current customers. I would be disappointed at the lack of official support, but as long as we have our devs, we're golden.
Also, if Samsung & TMo do fail us on Froyo, I imagine they're going to fail Vibrant 4g owners later on as well. The ranks of the disappointed will only grow with the addition of a new phone if Samsung continues to stay on the back end of progress.
this BS.

I'm pretty sure they can be a class action lawsuit. Not only were the phones sold with GPS that does not work.. but the phone has been advertised as 2.2 a bunch of times, I'm sure the ads can be found. There is also the lag issue with it being stock.
One way at looking at it is they made the proper fixes to this phone instead of making a recall/fixes to the original Vibrant, like a true fix with the GPS... not a crappy software they stole form us... upgrading the OS... and fixing the lag issue (altho that is a "non" issue according to tmobile).
I have been in class action lawsuits over less.....
And if that wont work... ill wait for the new one to come out.. buy it and sell my modded one in the box to someone on craigslist! (jokes)
Ugh. Definitely never getting another Samsung phone again. I was skeptical about the slow updates when I heard about the Behold 2 debacle, since the Galaxy S series was going on all major US carriers, as well as sell internationally. I thought, "There's no way they would deny ALL of us good timing on updates, customer support, etc."
I was wrong.
Screw you Samsung.
I don't care how great your screen is. I don't care how great your processor is. I don't care how many more you sell. You are not getting anything else from me.
/endrant.
Sorry, guys. Had to rant somewhere. Pisses me off that they just now decide to sell what we were supposed to get in the first place. 4g, FFC, 2.2.

Not to sound like a douche, but I think it's pretty obvious that Sprint & HTC plan on releasing an update that would fix the problems presented with the GB update.

Last week my wife and I went to a sprint store because her moment was having problems. The person there offered her a different phone but out of the list her phone was the best. I have read about people getting different phone by complaining about the epic and with all of its problem. I do have insurence on my phone. I was wondering what people think my chance of getting a differnt phone is? I have had it replaced once. I have been really happy with the dev community here and if samsung had programmers half as good as the ones here we would see ICS on our phone by the end of the year. Also does anyone know what the other phone options are available for a replacement for the epic?

Did adobe rewrite flash player to support the Samsung moment? I'm 100% sure that the moment's chipset does not support flash that's why I got an epic. But html5 works fine on the moment which I found out about 2 months ago.
but if flash does work can you post a link to where you got flash from? I searched on sdx and they all confirmed flash doesn't work.
If I remember correctly it will work, just not ideally. The jit compiler was not optimized for Flash support on Eclair, but it would function. This is all fuzzy, someone please correct me if necessary.
