Why is Froyo still on the Samsung site? - Epic 4G General

Since Froyo was pulled by Sprint, why is it still available for download from Samsung on their site?

Because Samsung and Sprint clearly cannot get their stories straight and their sh*t together!!

because its not really a bad update. there is nothing wrong with it besides user error in flashing it and there is nothing wrong with the update that a hard reset shouldnt fix.

I wouldn't say user errors. You have to remember 95% of Epic users don't know about xda, don't care about rooting, and don't know anything about their phone except what is already on it. If they get an update from Sprint and it breaks their phone that isn't their fault and hard resetting is a crappy way to fix it.
"Sorry bout that, kiss your data goodbye to fix it, kthx bi"
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

as many people came out of the woodwork when eb13 dropped, id have to say that the number of users that dont know about xda is slimming down to way less than 50 percent. cnn even mentioned you could get froyo here. im really curious about the percentage of problems caused by getting the acual ota, as opposed to people who used the update methods from here.
also, i dont think a full reset is that bad. gmail and the social networks save your cantacts. use a backup program for the .apks and you should be set. who ghives a **** if someone looses thier angry birds data? not me.

Yeah, actually EB13 is perfect. It just needs a clean slate. It's sad that it's getting such a bad rep.

Except that a hard reset doesn't fix the bad 3G speeds. Guess that qualifies as "nothing wrong" eh?

Man, I was on (stock) EB13 when it first dropped and it was perfect. Then went to the MIUI and CM6.2 and tried to go back to stock EB13 and had problems for a whole damn day. Signal was constantly going from 3-4 bars to 0, data was slow and barely working. Cutting in and out all the time. I wanted to blame EB13 and I did..then I found out there was even a problem with my mom's Evo and she was experiencing the same problem(s). So those having those network issues, I say wait it out and see if it fixes itself because it has for me.

bad 3g speeds are completely coincidental. my 3g speeds and wifi speeds have increased. guess that qualifies as "winning" eh?

Noob here.
On Thursday, I downloaded Froyo from the Sammy site and updated via SD card. It went fine, and I have not experienced any issues.
I was stock Eclair.

EB13 isnt flawless, but its not as bad as people say. The problem is updating from Eclair via OTA or using update.zip. Like Whosdaman said, a clean slate is the best way to do it.
I was having issues when I did the update.zip method then I used the exe method and wiped my phone and now it works almost flawlessly. Im getting a stronger signal, my auto rotate is instant, no reboots or locking up, etc.

Yea, I think the OTA+EB13 might have been causing problem. But a Clean install seems to work fine. First time Ive been on a stock ROM since I purchased this phone.

It's probably because OTA is causing the most problems. I'm happy with my phone doing the full wipe method. Plus it gives users a choice. OTA is forced on people.

I'm getting 147kbps down and 83kbps upload, there is something seriously ****ed with EB13. This is after a wipe as well.

my 3g speeds are
995 down 456 up
1003 down 366 up
726 down 350 up
not great but close to the same as dk28

with vipers gov killer
1128 down
662 up
1059 down
671 up
1487 down
799 up
much better

How did you guys perform your install? I did the flash update.zip from the samsung website.

I dl the .exe version, installed it, and then used ODIN to flash EB13. When you install the app you can use explorer to find the folder the .tar is in.
I have reinstalled EB13 several times with none of the odd errors people are having. ODIN is the best way to upgrade your OS as the factory does the same thing.

They should just pull an htc hero and make it mandatory OTW.
I remember the excuse they used to make it mandatory otw was that the servers couldn't handle the update. No one argued with them and did the update straight from the 2.1 RUU

+1. It is not showing you 3g service...
Doesn't the Speedtest app need location turned on so it can select the most appropriate server for you. Otherwise you get the zero test.
Looks like an outage to me. Crappy service wouldn't get you zero, let alone NeGaTiVe ZeRo!!
Can you access any other internet page? It's possible a route between you and the server you're trying to do a speedtest with is down as well.

I never assume when I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue. I'd try to go to a couple of pages in the browser first if they don't connect you may have a sprint issue. I've had the app do this to me to when I was perfectly able to connect to actual sites.

i have been having the same problem here in WI. befere i had my EVO i was on a HERO with everything working ok(slow phone but at least data worked). but, now when i switched to the EVO i no longer had a data connection. the phone wont load any pages; its been a month now.
i have been in contact with sprint about the issue but they arent helping really. i keep receiving error code 104 "sign in failed". sprint claims "software problem" but i dont see how that could be. I used the most recent available RUU and then OTA the latest 3.70.651.1 and still nothing. i even rooted and tried flashing earlier radios with no change. also updating profile and reprovisioning data did nothing. so if nothing changes fast i want to be refunded all this time i have been without data.
My Sprint 3G speeds are balls-deep in fail. I have a Droid 2 on VZW and for fun I ran a speed test tonight and came up with:
.24 mbps download / .05 upload / 299 Ping from Sprint and
.95 mbps download / .25 upload / 128 Ping from VZW
I'm wondering if it's a nationwide issue? My 3G speeds have been incredibly laggy in loads of places (it's embarrassingly slow in comparison to even T-Mobile?! at some points). Hoping it's not a permanent issue of some sort.

Eb13 dev Roms = broken sms

I don't know about you guys but my messaging has been completely broken on the custom Eb13 roms. You know the usual. Not sending and whatnot.
Now hear me out...
I have flashed simply aosp and acs. Haven't tried bonsai Eb13 but i don't think i will. Now before i get flamed and Im told i didn't flash the right way i did. Flashed stock Eb13 through odin, then cwm 3.0.0.6, then after ext4 convert flash the Rom. Simple enough. Last night i decided to flash stock Eb13 deodexed. I converted to ext4 and Im using geno kernel 0.3a. Not only are my benchmark scores higher than any of the custom roms but.my sms has been working flawlessly. My gps for the.first time ever gets a lock within 5 seconds. Guaranteed. If you have problems with sms i suggest you do this. Btw with as much tweaking as acs has.done (or claim to have done) to stock why am i getting better benchmark results???
For those of you that are curious here are my benches...

Sms works fine with supernova. I haven't messed with gps enough to know how accurate it is. But it does get a fairly quick lock.
I bet its the Carrier IQ stuff giving you some awesome scores to keep you on that rom so they can track you!
The only reason your texts would not be sending is update your prl. And those benchmarks are way higher than what I was getting on the same rom and kernel. But it is not higher than my 2443 quadrant frozen rom and kernel so check yourself. You had to have something weird happen like maybe your restored data or ti backup will screw up a good flash.

Also your prolly getting those benchmarks because the carrier iq stuff is still gone. I think just because you flash a different rom it doesn't come unless you odin. I might be wrong but that is the logical explanation in your event.
FROZEN EPIC
A user in another SMS related thread said that he has found his SMS acts up when he does a Level 2 memory clear under task manager, and SMS won't return to normal after a full reboot.
Do you do this? I know I do, especially if I'm about to run some benchmarks, and my SMS goes to crap shortly thereafter.
No no. I dont do back ups lol if i wanna back something up ill drag it off the sd card into my laptop. Being a pc technician for so many years has taught me that installing os should and always be done from scratch. That way you get a full fresh install without any "baggage" left behind. I always odin, convert, then flash. I never flash any custom rum over anothet. So... my conclusion is that eb13 made some changes to antennae sensitivity. Today it actually was flaky for a bit... but when on the custom roms it was pure ****e. And yes im not an idiot the first thing i do when i flash a rom is profile and prl update. Flashing these roms must **** something over in the stock modem. I also flashed my girlfriends epic to acs and simply aosp with the same results!!! Only on stock eb13 does the sms work well. Like i said it as *****y today for about 5 minutes... but on these roms it was a constant issue. I dont have an issue with it as the phone is actually performing better than on those roms. I would get fc's here and there but on stock deodexed+geno+ext4 the only app thats giving me crap is the xda app!!for the past few hours ive been getting force closes when trying to reply lol whatevs its working for now...

No interest in EC05 when I have EB13

Anyone else with me on this one? I really have no interest in moving over to EC05. I currently have no issues. I think I am going to hold out for GB.
I was cool with EB13. I'm cooler with EC05.
I didn't quickly jump on it either. I'm waiting for confirmation that my favorite theme, the gb theme, is working well on the newest version of acs srf. Until then I'm sizing with eb13.

EB13 works pretty good. I do suggest, a minimum, that you flash the EC05 modem. My 3g works better, and 4g is way better... lower latency, faster wake up, and quicker connect.
Only reason I updated is for the developer support on ec05.
If you were just stock I wouldn't think there would be much of a reason unless you use your phone for a gps navigation system..
But because I run Syndicate Frozen I went for the 1.1 upgrade. Haven't regretted it. Faster, smoother, and same battery life as 1.02.

The kernel for eb13 also has bad code for the camera video and sports mode, and Ec05 doesn't have it, but then you could flash the twilight zone kernel to fix that.

It's because cell phone hackery has been around long enough to finally attract the 'old dog' demographic. Those people who never upgrade the OS their computer comes with, or still use Office 2000.
The idea that it works just fine by their standards tyvm, so why waste time getting something new if it isn't a huge change.
Mind you, that same old dog mentality means when a huge change comes along, they're just as crotchety and whine about why people are "fixing something that isn't broken".
Old coots. They eventually show up everywhere, hate change, and never seem to check into a nursing home fast enough.
I would upgrade. The gingerbread theme works just fine with the new srf 1.1.0 rom. plus until we have gingerbread all rom updates here will be ec05. Most of the upgrades are in the modem and camera anyways. I dont think they changed much if anything in the framework. I cooked up my own theme combining the gb and honeycomb theme with a couple new status bar icons but niether of those themes were updated for srf 1.1.0. Ive been running it since they released the rom with no problems.

Possibly the worse phone ever

So I got this machine and thought it was the bee's testes, turns out it isnt
I cant rely on it to re-boot without loosing the contents of the internal memory. last night for seemingly no reason it shut it self down and when I discoverd this I re-booted it, and it took and age to restart, then when I checked the internal memory pfffft gone, everything, all gone.
What a crock of cack, this happens every 3rd or 4th time it reboots, looses the entire lot.
Phone is stock, un-rooted, has had a factory reset and reformat of the internal AND external memory.
Frankly this is the last time I buy a Motorola phone, going back to my trusty Hero for the remained of this contract (22 months) that thing has had salt water baths, drops bangs, knocks, rooting and tooting and still wont die, Atrix, cant even take a reboot with out dieing.

Yeah I thought of that, Orange are being difficult though (now why arent I surprised?)
I am wondering if using gingerbreak all those months ago had anything to do with it, but since then I've had the OTA update from orange (the pre-pre update they pushed months ago) that wiped out the root / gingerbreak.
The worse of it is that I never know when it'll happen, seems to be random, not every reboot causes the internal wipe, so damn frustrating, think I may have a look at CM7 as it left Beta last night I wasnt going to hack about with this phone but seems I am being pushed that way
Oh well if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated
It's probably just the phone itself. I've never had or heard of any Atrix owner having those problems before. It is technology so there's going to be faulty devices somewhere along the line, unfortunately.
In an unexpected turn of events, a second call to CS Dept, has decided that indeed the phone is Terminally Ill so new HS coming tomorrow, so factory reset tonight to clear everything off
But it is an odd one, random reboots and internal memory wipes...
Ach well

Glad to hear you went the proper route of having it warrantied other than trying to polish a turd. If I run into trouble CS reps I always wait a day and call back. A new person on the other end usually helps the situation a lot.
I had run into a similar issue here at my work with a device. You can troubleshoot it all you want but on mobiles it either works or doesnt.
At the end of the day, save yourself some headache and call it in for RMA.
This happens to me sometimes. Not hardware fault. Motorola can't make a phone.

i certainly am, as a long time android user ( G1 crew!!) i have learnt my lesson too many times when it comes to OS updates. do not ever download and install them straightaway.
case in point- some people are experiecing USB and battery issues with the WW ICS rooted rom floating around.
better idea: wait a week for a dev to to their stuff and then jump in.

For the average user this is a good idea, but for someone looking to develop, the more you know the better, even if learned by troubleshooting problems you caused yourself by being too hasty..

My USB was not working but only because I wasn't doing the OTA update. Flashed that first ROM that was released with CWM. All I had to do was flash the new KWT US rom and everything is good to go. I could see your issue with not updating if you couldn't simply do a nandroid backup prior and then do a restore if necessary but I assume most patrons of this forum know how to move around between ROMs with ease. What a strange post in these forums, come to think of it.
I was holding back, but only because I had to go to work. I'm home now so let the hacking begin!
I am holding back because I dual boot and wont give up my Ubuntu boot for ICS when Prime is doing just fine for me.. And I have experienced ICS on my Mom's nexus and I am running it on my Thunderbolt, so the novelty has worn off for me..
However, once there is a nvflashable ICS port I will jump ship..
Holding back. Got the Revolver ROM 3.11.1 customized to my liking. I know I can backup and restore... but I just can't walk away from my config for an unproven and likely buggy first (and probably rushed) ICS release.
Ok, I made the switch- so far not too bad. Some things are zippy, while other things a bit laggy. Maybe a reboot will fix it.

i certainly am, as a long time android user ( G1 crew!!) i have learnt my lesson too many times when it comes to OS updates. do not ever download and install them straightaway.
case in point- some people are experiecing USB and battery issues with the WW ICS rooted rom floating around.
better idea: wait a week for a dev to to their stuff and then jump in.

I am using the WW ICS rooted rom. Pretty much everything is working fine.
No battery issue what so ever.
The USB issue is EASILY fixed. Doesn't make sense to hold back for this reason.
mine works perfectly except thumb keyboard has fc and goes into DEATH LOOP
took me like 15 minutes to uninstall the damn thing
I updated mine and still having the random deep sleep issues where I have to cold boot it I even did a factory reset any suggestions please and thank you

For the average user this is a good idea, but for someone looking to develop, the more you know the better, even if learned by troubleshooting problems you caused yourself by being too hasty..
