Silverlight support...? - Xoom General

Hi,
I know we are waiting for Flash 10.2 to watch videos online. There are some sites however that instead of Flash rely on Ms Silverlight technology.
Is this supported by Xoom and Honeycomb in general? If not do you know if like Flash there are plans to introduce it soon.

It's a Microsoft technology. What do you think? Yes, no is the correct answer. Moonlight exists for Linux, but I'm quite sure there's none for android.

Shame :-( as one of my fav. sites with videos is 100% in silverlight.
Looks like I need to wait for tablet with windows, passive cooling and decent bat. life
Till 2012 not that much time left, lol.

Didn't read the article. While I agree it's intresting and good for the health of android. I'm not entirely sure I'd want to run android on my netbook. I mean really, it would most likely lock certain features down. Will there be an app to burn cds using an external drive? What about flash? I know adobe is promising it next year but we'll wait and see. Seems like it would lock the hardware down more than I'd like. What about drivers for after market mods? Still, what's good for android is good for the g1, in that respect I hope they sell plenty of them.

Most likely netbook related apps will appear and will have some supplied. Offering an embedded Linux option on Notebooks and motherboards is starting to become more common place, but they're typically based off distros aimed towards Desktop or Notebook PC's that typically have much more resources. Being that Android is designed to be a low resource embedded OS I can see it replacing the poorly adapted distros they're using now.
The main idea to using Android for their Netbook solutions is to lower their production cost and increase their functionality. While they offer Linux as a cheaper option to Windows to decrease their price tag the "NetBook Edition" Linux distros aren't very intuitive and still pretty slow.
Netbook with Android and a unlocked sim card slot. That would be killer. I would hop on it with the first preorder.

Tired of Slow Laggy Flash Support?

Check this out..
Now if only one of our Devs can get their hands on a beta.
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/10/05/flash-player-10-1-to-support-smartphones-nvidia-powered-netbook/
Video of palm pre running flash 10
Adobe has announced that Flash 10.1 will support GPU acceleration for NVIDIA graphics, which means that if you've got a computer with NVIDIA GeForce, ION, or Tegra graphics in it, you should be able to watch high definition Flash video in fullscreen mode even if you have a slow processor like an Intel Atom or ARM-based chip.
What's more, Adobe is going to bring Flash 10.1 to Smartphones, ending the separate but unequal era of Flash Lite. Flash 10.1 will be available for Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Google Android, and Symbian phones. The iPhone's not on that list because Adobe still hasn't worked out an arrangement with Apple to add support for Flash 10.1 to the iPhone's Safari web browser, but that could still happen.
Flash 10.1 is due to hit the streets in the first half of 2010. But there should be beta versions available before the end of 2009.
Thread reopened as reason for closure is unclear.
It was probably auto-closed for having the word "Flash" in it or something.
Anyway, I really do hope this is true. It'll likely make competition between mobile and desktop browsers, which is a good thing, since before the iPhone, Opera Mobile, Iris Browser, and finally the Android browser, the mobile web was one of those areas that you would have to expect your site sliced-and-diced to fit the screen.
P.S.: wouldn't this go in the Dream general forum? It's not specifically related to dev'ing, other than the fact that ROM devs would likely cook Flash into their ROMs once the beta leaks or something.
I'm not sure where it is but about 2 months ago they demoed the alpha of the same flash on the g1 with gpu acceleration as well. seemed to run nicely. basically it comes out at the "end of this year" according to the adobe dev emails I get. Unless of course we can get a leak sooner. can't wait

p.s. I think it would be better suited in dream general indeed and will move it.
I thought Android's browser was webkit based?
If it is, then there is no logical reason that iPhone-Safari can't already have it, since that is also webkit. My guess is just Apple being stupid and rejecting it as usual.
All the more reason to buy an Android.
I think Apple wont allow it because full flash can take a big bite out of the apple app store/itunes
(just my opinion)

This is a TERRIBLE thing.
Flash should be boycotted.
Its only effect is to hinder the advancement of open web standards and keep us locked in 90's type content.
Flash appeared in 1996 to take advantage of missing web functionality and provide more interactivity (not to play videos). Nowadays, it doesn't actually provide anything useful -- videos can be played by MEDIA plugins and don't need to be flash-packaged. Interactivity can be provided by TONS of different mechanisms. There is NO USE for flash.
The only reason why ANYONE still uses it is because certain websites are TOO STUPID to ditch it! I.e., they got used to using it when it *was* useful, and never bothered to learn the RIGHT WAY to do things when it became possible to ditch it!
I VERY VERY STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT use flash plugins. LET FLASH DIE!!!

I think that is pretty much along the same thing that Steve Jobs said about not implementing Flash to iPhone/iPad/iTouch devices. Although I agree with it but like you said yourself there are so many websites that won't ditch it. When something better comes around (not saying that there isn't already) then I'm sure that they will look forward to that as well. Until then... I want HULU!
Plus, I know that Netflix is wanting to implement their movie streaming services to Android sometime soon too! Can't wait!

LOL. Calm down. I do agree with you that flash slows down web browsing with ads but that is why I downloaded AdFree from the market. HTML-5 is slowing taking over and Android 2.0+ is compatible with that already (or just need a simple plug-in). Anyway, we can use our phones to enjoy the FULL internet experience.

And flash can die when I can have the ENTIRE web experience given to me by something else.

Flash isn't gonna die any time soon.
It's like mp3. It's an awful lossy format that sounds terrible, yet, because it's so small everyone uses it, despite the fact formats such as OGGVORBIS give much better sound quality in a smaller file. Also, it's completely open source, which is always nice

YOU are missing the point. This ISNT ABOUT distributing. This is about USING. MP3 encoders and decoders are available, FOR FREE. *ANYONE* can use it. Distributing commercial content in that format is subject to licensing fees. So what?
The point is that ADOBE is TERRIBLE at supporting their product -- flash. They took the better part of a DECADE TO SUPPORT AMD64, and that is only on linux.
Their software is terrible and buggy.
Only a MINORITY of web users are *ABLE* to use flash content (whether due to use of a platform adobe doesn't support, or due to DEFECTS in flash plugin).
It is also a HORRIBLE resource hog!
And to top it all off, there is NO REASON to use it! Everything it does can be done BETTER with things that are STANDARD. And FYI: These standard things actually WORK and use VERY LITTLE RESOURCES.
So please explain HOW it is to anyone's benefit to keep using this CRAP!
To kill it requires that EVERYBODY DOES NOT USE IT. Already right now MOST PEOPLE do NOT USE IT.
The more people do NOT use flash, the more web developers will realize that they are shooting themselves in the foot by using it!
If developers use the SUPERIOR ALTERNATIVES, then those sites will work for EVERYBODY, and flash will finally die.
Which means that people won't need to wait for adobe to support new platforms (without exception, this takes YEARS), or fix bugs (again, typically takes YEARS).
Also realize this: flash sites ***ARE VANISHING***. I can't think of ONE SINGLE SITE that still requires flash, except for youtube -- and it is going to vanish from there very soon... as soon as they decide on the appropriate video format (going to be ON8, theora, or h264).
Flash runs amazingly for me, until something better can do everything it does and better, Ill keep using it.
End of story.

So you're saying that only YouTube uses Flash? Are you on crack?
One word... PORN. There are millions of sites out there that uses Flash based content too.
Then there are other sites such as Hulu. Huge site that is generating revenue off of their adds and soon as a paid membership service.
There are streaming sites like local news stations that deliver real time content to your hands.
Then there are Flash games as well.
Many cell phones are beginning to support Flash content because it is so common on websites. The more people that stare at their cell phones the more hooked they are on the service that their cellular company provides. Which mean more customers, more money, more profit. Notice that many of the phones these days are getting thinner but the screens are getting wider? Do you think it's because people just want to have a nice bright 4" screen on their hip or in their pocket? People use these new devices for multimedia and web browsing and not just for texting and making phone calls. Web browsing isn't complete if you can only browse wap and mobile friendly web pages. Flash is also a smaller file that is easy to stream... which is cheaper for cellular providers. Sure they may have to upgrade their network for the 34,000,000 subscribers that are watching last nights episode of Lost on their phones (hypothetical)... but they are investing in all of that anyway. Why do you suppose that is? For situations such as this. Should Flash disappear it would be an awful waste of research, development, sales and technology. Yes, there are alternatives... but are they more convenient than what we already have in place that works? If it's not broke, don't fix it. If Flash was going to become obsolete it'll more than likely be replaced by mp4. I can see your point of view but I can see how this multimedia evolution is progressing.

Wtf are you having a go at me for? i agree with you.
My point was, that like flash, there are better audio formats available that can do the job much better than mp3s, but because the majority of people don't really care and are not very knowledgeable on the subject, they see no reason to change. It's the same with flash. They don't know that there are any alternatives and, so they see no point in using anything different.
For developers, flash may not be the best thing to use, but EVERYONE has heard of it. From a marketing point of view, it's best to use a brand that you have heard of than one you haven't.
Why are you actually getting so worked up about this? You seem to be the ONLY person who actually cares, and next time, please actually READ my posts before you have a massive rant at me when i actually ****ing agree with you.
Also, only a minority of web users can use Flash? wtf? I'd quite confidently say the majority of web users are either on Windows or on a Mac. Both of which have fantastic flash support.
Flash won't be replaced till there is something to replace it with. Please don't say HTML 5 cause thats a complete joke. As hulu just said in a press release. HTML is nice and cool but for our statistics and our video quality HTML 5 is many years behind flash. Just take a look at youtube and thier HTML5 experment. With the power and money of google behind them their HTML5 site looks like crap compared to their flash site.
Also HTML 5 severly lacks in vector graphics which was the main selling point about flash for years. Then take into account cross platform bugs and development and HTML 5 is just gonna be a flashy form of HTML 4. Flash is so powerfull it will always have a home. Hell now you can make iphone and ipad apps with it, even after Stevo gave the no no.

Huh? You seem to be SERIOUSLY CONFUSED.
Multi-platform support has ALWAYS been one of the MANY MANY SERIOUS weaknesses of flash. They take YEARS TOO LONG to support new platforms -- if EVER (see apple). Flash 10.1 will NOT work on Galaxy 3

Hello everyone. First off, be clear of one thing: FLASH will not work on our phones even when Froyo is out. Flash was an improvement in Froyo, but it is not going to be in all phones just because they have Froyo..
I see a lot of people complaining that the Froyo releases of the Galaxy 3 do not have Flash 10.1. I opened this topic to inform everyone who doesn't know that Flash is currently only supported on ARMv7 processors, namely the ARM Cortex A8 processors.
The Galaxy 3 has an ARMv6 processor, which is not currently supported by Flash. Adobe has mentioned that Flash might be supported on lower end processors in the near future, but right now it can only run on phones having an ARM Cortex A8 processor.
So right now, Flash is a no-go on our phone, even when the final Froyo update is released.
You can check the requirements for Flash on the following link:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/#mobile
Also, check out this link which mentions that ARM might be supported on ARM11 (ARMv6) devices in the future:
http://androidandme.com/2010/08/news/flash-player-10-1-could-appear-on-some-arm11-devices/
For those who wonder why the HTC phones have Flash, just found out that the Flash Player on HTC has been developed by HTC themselves. It is not the actual Adobe Flash Player 10.1..
So we can only hope that until final FROYO relese Adobe will mode Flash to work on our hardware

Not likely. Adobe has said they might make it work on these processors, but it surely isn't at the top of their agenda right now.
But on the other side, if We ask at loud and if we do it in weaves, they will change their mind and support our hardware

Where did you get this information from?
This is crucial, especially to the people in countries, where this phone has been released for sale recently, such as India. The biggest selling point of this phone, has been the technical ability to upgrade from Eclair to Froyo, as such, the importance of Flash cannot be underestimated. Whilst there are many owners who are not too bothered about this, the vast majority have assumed that purchase of the Apollo, would mean, for their internet phone usage, a very much improved experience, mirroring , albeit on a small scale, a view familiar to the desktop computer.
I hope you may be wrong. Samsung should clarify this, before many others spend too much money.

Where do you want to use flash ?
a) WEB:
Because you can use SKYFIRE which converts at their servers flash to html5 and you can watch converted flash video at your mobile
b) SD card applications:
I had on my XPERIA X1 (which has slower CPU) flash player and many many flash games. It was working without any lags.
c) what if you install flash player 10 like 3th party application ?
d) do you want to launch complicated Flash www pages at your mobile ? With this stupid resolution ? I think that:
- it has no sense (I hate to read anythink on this display)
- sooner or later the pages will be converted to html5 and we will be able to have them.
So please for what reason do you need flash ?

Live score updates would be one feature I use on a regular basis. Many sites require Flash to be viewed properly, and Skyfire is somewhat limited in being able to do so.
The resolution of the phone is a factor, but with many video presentations and live transmissions in the 320/240 mode, the Apollo is more than capable of being able to used for displaying web video. LaolaTV, TVU networks, and Justin TV are examples of this.
An otherwise very capable phone, I would just like to squeeze a bit more of it's potential.
The main requirement of flash is a VFPU(vector floating point unit).it is a physical device that should be present in the chip for flash to work.the older arm processors(arm1136) does not support it(thats why adobe said they wont support older processors). Our processor(arm1176) supports it but it is optional.so it all depends on whether samsung implemnted vfpu in this chip. Considering what they did with 3d graphics my hopes are pretty low.
Flash isnt essential but it would have been nice to have it.i didnt know about these things before i bought the phone.but considering the fact that no device. Anywhere near this price range supports it,i am happy with the phone.

I agree, also SPB TV works or Orange streaming TV (for orange customers), without any problem. I think that it's pricing policy - producers don't want to squeeze the maximum from the cheap phones.

As Adobe releases Flash for free, it doesn't really matter to them if it's used in cheap or costly phones. The ARMv6 processor is not necessarily used only in cheap phones. Rendering Flash content is a processor intensive job, so it is not an easy job to port it to lower end processors.

and HTC wildfire ? I din't mean this no motivation for Adobe but for Samsung to support the cheaper phone. They just implement some widgets, youtube as a start, but later they do not care about old models.

HTC has been giving Flash support for their Eclair phones, but it doesn't work that great. If you check the Wildfire review on GSMArena, Flash has trouble playing videos on all sites, and only simple games run nicely.
Flash can run on ARMv6 processors, but it hasn't been developed properly for it yet. And no one except HTC gives support for Flash in their Eclair running phones, so it's not only Samsung's fault. Plus, even Samsung gave Flash on the high-end Galaxy S AFTER it was upgraded to Froyo.
Let's see, it's bound to come out for ARMv6 processors sometime, as budget Android phones are only gonna increase in popularity.
U are right

I really hope you know that HTML5 isn't finnished yet, and will take more 2 years to be finnished. Till there, yes we need flash...

what about LG OO or other 200€ devices ?
Is there any other app that makes flash possible on our phones?
skyfire
flash doesnt work on p500 either....
Hey
It is possible, to install a Flash Lite on 2.2? Because we don't have any flash, and can't watch videos through skyfire. But no - I won't come back to 2.1

Jolla Sailfish OS on GS3

In case you haven't seen it...
http://m.gsmarena.com/jolla_sailfish_os_detailed_demoed_on_video-news-5104.php
Looks really good, anyone wanna work on a port for our lovely gs3?
Hmmm...doesn't seem to have generated any interest yet...
In an interview with the CEO of Jolla, the interviewer asked if he could put this on his GS3, the CEO replied "Enabling Sailfish for a device such as Galaxy S3 is something that any community member could already do."
The SDK is released online here (I believe)
Unfortunately, I have no technical expertise in this area, is anyone else interested?
Could this be better than Jellybean?

I'd love to play around with it. The Ambiance feature looks really really cool.
A port form a different OS would only be good for the community However, I have no skills in developing or porting so I can't help except perhaps a small donation to whomever gets it done.
Same here, looks fun but no idea how to do it
I want! Looks awesome!

This have to be done! I really want sailfish!
It's awsome .
I's a good OS ! But not for geeks for sure .
It will only turn heads of people who want to use it for daily usage . Not for heavy customizing ,
BTW The gecko / Firefox OS Would be awesome ! as it is an HTML 5 Based OS / or just a web page :cyclops:
Man no Google now voice search. Gapps. Or play store apps.
Its looks nice but right now in this phone world its apple Google and Microsoft. I may want to try out the new Ubuntu os since Google is technically Linux.

Sure I would still prefer Android as my main platform, but I would LOVE to try this out on my GS3! I've always been an OS geek, and love the feel of exploring a new, beautiful, and innovative UI, as well as learning how the underlying platform works and differs from similar setups. It's why I've been playing around with Linux distros and customizing and tweaking them, Solaris, BSD, etc long before Android, despite the fact that I'm no developer. I would LOVE to be able to play around with different OS'es on my GS3, rather than just different Android roms, and Sailfish is one of the most interesting to me. I'll probably end up using Ubuntu more than anything if we get it, but Sailfish is something new and different and it looks really fun. :fingers-crossed:
Can someone link the story of a Jolla dev saying it can be ported easily by the community? If so, let's get this project started, and find out what needs to be done to make this happen, I'm tired of all these different OS'es coming only to the GNex!
With the re-merge of Android and Linux, and addition of the ARM drivers to the mainline, these types of alternative OS'es shouldn't be terribly difficult to port, and between Alien Dalvik and Google writing all their apps in HTML5 for ChromeOS, we should be able to get the basics of what we need from Android running on here, we just need to get the OS running!!

You realize that Sailfish is also technically Linux, too, right? And you realize that Ubuntu OS won't have Google Now, Gapps, or the Play Store either, right? So why are you naysaying Sailfish but optimistic about Ubuntu? You, sir, make no sense.
Why Sailfish might be a "GOOD" idea too...
The simple fact is I just bought a NOTE 2. First Samsung Device and aside from the S-pen, making a different way of interaction.
We have this to consider. As i have been readng how to 'setup' my NOTE 2 as it's on order and pending... I have come across
threads about how GOOGLE is trying to get 'us' the end users off of SD cards. Other Crap like that... Google has power now,
and they are acting so far like EVERY other US company that gets it. M$, Apple...
It's nice to 'have' something else to look at that is OPEN and someone noted something that is a concern to me. Customizable
look, and features. I myself don't like CRAP on my desktop or my HOME SCREENS... I just don't. When I run Linux, I go with no
icons on my desktop.
So this is so far from what I've seen a bit of a turn off but in the future because the system has to start somewhere... if it's really
open, one would hope such features could be expected. Either 3rd party or by the main OS makers.
There have been enough complaints here by users about devices without SD CARD access. About how Google is trying to cut
this off and how ni Samsung devices Samsung had to 'hack' around it to allow SD card access to apps that were used to getting
it.
I for one for simplicity don't want a stupid OS where all my personal CRAP PHOTOS etc are STUCK in the phone. Just for a simple
reason like that.
Another reason we should all hope for MORE OS's to be released is because lets let the DEVICE makers take something back!
Eventually it only takes one to WISE up... loosing money competing OS to OS or by trying to follow up when they have a good device but for example the ANDROID leader is SAMSUNG. I like that LG picked up WebOS SO they're gonna make Smart TV with it but all it takes is a little pebble to start the Landslide.
THese OEM's we want them to wise up and say... WAIT! There's stuff out there... we make the DEVICE and let them decide what they want on it. Isn't waht we all dream of? Cause then stupid crap like Samsungs Flash counter will be something made obsolete by trend.
Makes will possibly start trying to just concentrate on GOOD HARDWARE just like computers, and then maybe some company will really wise up and the only thing they'll contribute will be a device coming with some kind of AWsome MULTI-BOOT loader system ... Or at least if the devices are open someone can make one... haha.
Also about the Ubunty on mobiles thing... well, it's an interesting idea but seems like they are still not planning to get anywhere with it for a whole year? I wonder why...
Sailfish is using the WHOLE Linux... it's the same thing, but with a UI set for imbedded and small devices. SO all that needs to be done in the future is a step up to a whole desktop for bigger screen devices or if you dock your device to a large screen... so in other words...
Sailfish could have the same potential as Ubuntu...
I have personally never used Ubuntu and hope that with the option of sailfish what we may see is other Linux projects joining the trend. I mean really... it's all OPEN source. What actually bugs me the most as an end users is also the same problem that I see with some Linux projects.
Everyone reinventing the WHEEL trying to make the best this and taht and this is the real reason in some instances it's taking longer to do something that is lying around and could be modified and it's true, I don't speak with any experience in coding or programming but I think some who do know what is said is a bit true in some instances just like in some a total rewrite may be in order.
but if it's OPEN, then the parts are there.
So either way... it'll be good to see SAILFISH and other things. I'm sorry, but the whole TIZEN thing doesn't appeal to me pesonally. If it had more underlying structure other than the HTML 5, cause frankly, I am not real happy about every little thing on my system always
being connected to the internet in some way... though yes, I realize HTML 5 is just a way to create graphics but, remember these are companies we're dealing with here and they always have their own agenda.
Anyway... I'd like to see Sailfish vs Windoz OS, cause Micro$haft has not changed their ways and I don't expect to see them do any different than they have and their system will be similarly locked in ways but differently or in differently places as much as Apple's.
Android is open now but Google is acting weird and some competition and innovation can keep it open longer...
So, I'd love to see Salifsish fly or is that Swim... and of course they need to start somewhere and 90% of they users will be people who just want it to 'work' and that's where they need to go first. Us power users, etc in this forum, we're like the 10% or less now. Before
we were the people buying smartphones but when smartphones are now what the average user is getting their hands on?
Forget it... you bettre make something that they goo OOOH perty, and it's simple. OR you will be lost in the market. I also recall that
Sailfish is coming out here in the Asian market if I read taht right a couple month ago. I am an expat living in CHINA and believe me.
They want it simple and pretty, anything else... and it will fail. But once it hits this market, where a lot of stuff for Android is being made now
if it is accepted... then it will start having things made for it and if it can run Android apps, it's a true plus...
Depending on what hardware it comes out on, if it's able to use the simple apps I use in Android, it may be my next device to replace my daily users...
Obviously the NOTE 2 is going to be my KIND device and isn't exactly for 'daily' use in the way that I use my devices.
Still, the more the merrier and frankly, a lot of OEM's will want to get off of being branded as ANDROID device makers or whatever if they want to sell.
Also it's all good that ANDY is merging back with main kernel, but so far... there is still NO REAL work you can do with Android despite this yet. I do mean, such as prepare a very good OFFICE DOCUMENT, Power Point presentation and so on that you would on a computer. Though I hear the Open Office to Android project is going... so one can but wait and hope.
I would love to try this out on my LG optimus 2x SU660!

Wow. should try
I would love to see this OS running on my S3.
very cool... watch the hands on video. Note that they say that android apps will be ported over for the sailfish os, SO i would imagine that even if gapps are blocked etc. that they would likely work for the most part, or could be made to work ... lol :highfive:
Im definitely interested in anything that has quality (obviously this does!) ... and represents a new form of competition
I think this is pretty damn awesome. The hands on videos on YouTube look great, especially the ambiance thing.
Honestly, the phone looks good too but i would rather keep the beast hardware in my S3 and maybe get an S4, but having this OS on it would be awesome.
If someone had a way to dual boot Sailfish and Android, that would be epic.
Sure, it isnt completely and utterly customizable. But Sailfish seems very natural to use and at the same time you can still tap into all the Android apps!
Simple OS + Android apps.. what's not to like?
