Battery issues after EB13 - Epic 4G General

After updating to EB13 it now takes forever for my battery to charge, it barely lasts 6 hours, and the battery gets hot as can be. I now have actually had my phone tell me it cant charge till it cools off. It never happened on DI18. Also, if im doing something on my phone while its plugged in, the charger wont keep up with the usage.

what kernel is on your phone?

my battery was very erratic too after updating to EB13. I just flashed it a second time with odin, and now my battery lasts longer than it ever has!
I'm not sure if this would help you, but it certainly helped me
FYI: I flashed the ext4 version from the dev page, and it seems to run a lot better after an odin flash.

Stock EB13 kernel.

35% Charged
Mine been charging up to 35% all day, Im a try to let it charge all night see what i get in the morning

It takes 8 hours to charge the battery, where it took around 2 hours befre the update. The phone is also hot as well, where it never was when on DI18

mine also takes quite a while to charge, but lasts quite a while as well..
I like the long lasting part.. the slower charging stinks though. :/

You may need to wipe your battery stats.

That was mostly directed at some of the others in the thread.
If you issue is just that it seems to take too long to charge then wiping stats in CWM (you have to use the one click root - not sure if you can do it in stock recovery) *might* help.
Your issue seems a little different - the phone should NOT run hot like that. Even overclocked to 1.2 mine doesn't get very hot unless I'm really pushing it while it's charging. Have you tried reflashing your phone? Backup everything important and try the Samsung updater tool (it'll wipe everything and start you fresh on EB13).

You can try a Sprint store if you have one near.

I had similar problems with eb13. Battery went from about half to dead in a minute or two and i kept getting force closes on some apps. Went back to dk28. I was running the genocide kernel.

All my sprints stores say that their software is incompatible to reflash the OS.

I flashed from the Samsung updater and then did a battery test. After a full charge I was able to go 34 hours down to 3%. A lot of that time was in sleep mode for the phone, but I also was running live wallpaper and had GPS on the entire time and WiFi off and on throughout. I'm pretty impressed with the battery chops.

I agree with this. I got 25 hours with moderate use. Facebooking, twittering, uploading pics, even went to the gym and streamed music with Double Twist for an hour. Battery is amazing.

Guess ill have to get hold of a windows pc and reflash with samsung updater

Mine charges fine, but it WILL NOT sleep. Same issue I had in DK28. I have NO idea what could be causing it. I've hardly installed anything, and the only widget I have is the "Battery Life" widget and I've even tried killing it and no change, won't sleep. Don't know what to do other than go back to DI18.

yeah...my phone has been running hot as balls lately. I've never gotten into the 100's before like this...usually just surfing with 3G im in the mid 80s..now I stay in the high 90s going to 100s :/

Batteries that take a long time to charge need to be replaced.

Gonna try using my spare (and never used before other new) battery and see if that remedies anything.
I'm on stock JI6 also. Never had a problem with hot battery until...
I played Quake 3 Arena for about 30 minutes. Afterwards I noticed my battery was hot and battery life was terrible (from full charge to about 30%) sitting idle overnight. This happened for about 3 days.
I used Astro Explorer and closed Q3A process, no change. Rebooted phone and no more hot battery and normal battery life, all is well again. Strange. I guess some processes are 'hidden' and can't be closed without reboot.
I was getting a hot battery while running TW Core kernel. I flashed JAC XMOD 1.1 kernel and my battery has stayed cool.

Ugh.. getting mad at battery life!

I have not changed anything... I was getting 16+hours and still having between 15 and 20% left but the last two days I'm hardly getting 10 hours! WTF!
What is a good program for seeing what apps are open when they don't need to be? Would that just be like a tast killer?
Just a little rant... sorry. When I complain to my friends they just call me a nerd... I need to vent to people that understand, haha.

Nope.. I use it moderately. listening to music for maybe an hour brings down my battery levels from 90 to 58% and this thing is draining 1% every 2 mins on standby...
Btw while I was charging my phone and it magically jumped from 8 to 34% in jus 10mins or so(I had switched it off before charging and after few mins of charging, I switched it on to find it on 34%). Is this a factor??
that's ridiculous, that must be an application eating up type battery

If you're charging via USB, you may wish to connect to AC. USB doesn't charge as fast and your phone (apps running, etc) may using power faster than the USB can replenish it.
If you're on AC, turn the phone off and charge it that way. If it continues to decrease this way, there is something seriously weird with your device.
I re-flashed bionix but the battery drain still continues.. Should I change back to toxic darky 9.5 and see how the battery on that thing is working?

Strange problem I recently developed on my vibrant. Suggestions?

Ok so these last couple of days I've been having the strangest problem with my vibrant. The battery litterally sucks it self on the charger. For example, today at 3 in the morning I woke up to find my phone charging at 71% I was like ok good. Woke up at 7 and the phone was completly dead! It looses power on the charger. At first i thought it was the battery so i switched it. And whattya know. Still the same problem. Then i thought it was the usb port since ya know samsungs port sucks ass so j get a new charger and nothing. Let me remind you tthat this is a recent problem. Any body know a fix to this?

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
My point is nothing to do with rom or phone but rather the charger or cable my be damage and causing short that drains the battery. Hence the suggestion to try other cables and charge methods to eliminate the possibility of this being the culprit.

Does it also fail to charge if the phone is turned off? If it charges while off then perhaps its a software issue after all. If not then the charge/usb port might be bad. How are you charging the battery between posting?

It shows its charging. But it'll go from like 11% to 0% in like 10 mins. And yea it charges with the screen off.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Have you tried to backup and re-flash your phone? Have you tried a battery calibration by wiping the battery stats? My advice *having never encountered that issue* would be to save all your data, make a list of the apps you use regularly and re-flash the phone then manually re-download each app and do not restore anything. if all goes well and it charges like normal then your set and can if you wish restore your old data and/or apps 1 per day till you notice the problem, return if it does.
I did just that. Reflashed a new rom and less drain but its definatly.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
My next advice would be to try stock 2.2 for a day or so and see if it has issues. then if its ok try a new stable version of cm7 or miui * different build than previously used* and see if the problem returns.

Ive been thinking of cm7 but the battery life is driving me away. I was able to charge it till like 40% then i unplugged it by accident and I plugged it back in and BOOM battery drain. Its at 0% and will not rise.

If the phone gets hotter than 120° then it wil stop charging and actually dicharge. Make sure your not overcloking or ajything.
My advice on which rom if your not set would be to use trigger. I moved to trigger a long time ago after one of my bionix flashes didnt work quite right and have not looked back yet. I am currently on project v with trigger theme which is a little more like stock but with tweaks than a fully custom rom.
Ok so I got it to charge too 100% overnight and I unplugged it and it went down too 37% instantly. -__- just started working today and this isn't cool. I also left it by a fan so it wasn't hot at all.

In that case I would be sure to flash back to stock clean and then go to a different rom, I suggest Trigger 3.2 very stable in my experience, and charge to 100% and do a battery calibration. Trigger comes with an app to calibrate the battery and be sure its fully charged.

Battery Drains QUICKLY!

I got school at around 6 am. By the time I eat lunch it's already at 57%. By the time I get home around 5 and it's already at 17%.
All I do is listen to music (doubletwist/playerpro) and play Cut the Rope, WTF!?
Cell standy by is 46% in batter usage followed by wifi with 11%

Brightness is below half,I never go over. WiFi is on but not all the time.
Stock rom 2.3.4 rooted
Do you have data off?
How's your phone signal most of the time? It has been proven that low/bad signal drains battery quicker than good signal.
Sometimes certain buildings/rooms have pretty bad reception making it a huge drain for your phone.

This is a useful piece of information, however is not really practical. Ideally we don't want to be turning off our phones on every charge :/
I myself own 3 batteries, and alternate them (I have a wall charger for the batteries)

Once I updated my phone to 2.3.3 I noticed that the battery life was sub-par, only lasting 3/5s of the day on a full charge.
I proceeded to root my phone (as I don't have the money to unlock my Big Red Bootloader); after installing SetCPU I took down the clocking meter 1 notch (768MHz) and the phone is stable with not difference in performance (so far). Doing this and removing some unneeded bloatware has increased my battery life 2.5x and I can go almost 3 days on a single charge.

Yes, I have to agree. This has also happened to me. I have actually had this happened when I turned my phone off one day. Before turning it off it had 60% battery, after a minute I turned it on and it said 20% battery. Also, has it happened to you that you charge it leave a couple of hours and when you unplug it rapidly falls to 70% or less? LOL! But it is nothing a full charge and batterystats.bin wipe wont fix.

Wiping battery starts has nothing to do with reported battery percentage. Similar results can be obtained by setting your phone face up on the coffee table, watching any random show on tv, and doing Zumba for 30 minutes. In other words... none.
Battery stats, which is only a list of the apps that have put a demand on the battery, is already cleared each and every time the os is rebooted

This is what I have read on the XDA forums and it has worked for me.
Completely charge your phone to 100% (Full battery charge) without unplugging. Once it is charged, without unplugging it, reboot to recovery and wipe battery stats in the ADVANCED section. As soon as your wipe it, very quickly unplug the phone. (as fast as possible). Once you do this, reboot your phone and completely drain it to until it turns off and you cannot turn it back on unless is plugged. Once it is drained charge it completely full withot unpluggin it or turning it on.(Best time to do this is at night, since you are probably not going to use it while you sleep). After that just use it daily. You have to give it a couple of days so the battery syncs up. Hope I helped out!

No offense, but what you have read is incorrect and is rooted in a misunderstanding about how the os and li-ion batteries work.
1. Wiping battery stats does nothing pertaining to charge indication. The file cleared is an already blank file that lists nothing more than a list of the apps that have consumed power. This file is cleared by the is on every reboot already.
2. Completely draining the battery shortens its serviceable life.
Any "results" that are seen by doing the above are merely attributable to the placebo effect.
