Has anyone tried playing converted avi files on it?
I used to have a Hero but it went back as some converted videos for it just wouldnt play smoothly. I'm guessing it was because the Hero was known for being way underpowered and laggy!
Would love to know. Don't mind ripping movies but enjoying the hassle free CorePlayer on my HD2 at the mo... however, with evidence of good movie playing I could easily be swayed by the sexy looking N1!!
1. get handbrake or http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
2. convert to H264
3. __________
4. Profit
What is point 3??
i really want one, but i have heard that you cant't watch video on this? i have loads of tv series and films on my pc, and i would be using this xoom for watching on the train and and the gym....
will i be able to do that? someone told me there is an issue ?
The issue is lack of software to take advantage of the hardware. 720p and 1080p videos have an issue I believe. It varies depending on the file type you're trying to play. MKV files have the biggest problem. As far as I know, divx play fine..?
Once someone like Rock Player update their app for Xoom support it should be fine. The hardware can handle it, just need the apps!
I have personally played a ripped copy of Avatar, I own on blu ray, for a Xoom I own. I have played it at 1080p and 720p. There is just a specific baseline format you need to rip it at. I like the 720p setting as there is little visual difference and it is a lot smaller file. It is definately HD.
Apple has the "ready to go" movies by iTunes you can buy where the Xoom you currently have to rip in a specific format. The movies I rip though are of much higher quality than from iTunes currently. Several of my friends own iPads.
Once flash is out for the Xoom Amazon Video on Demand will work. I have tested it already on my Droid X.
In my opinion Apple wins right now is easy of use getting movies, where the Xoom smokes it in quality.

So the movies / TV shows you purchase from iTunes, can you play them on other non-apple devices or are you stuck with them in apple products? ie, can you purchase from itunes and play on the xoom?
When the ipad first came out there were issues getting videos in the correct format, until software was updated/released.
At least with the Xoom, once the software is available, any video you have from just about anywhere will play on it. iPad/products still require the video to be in a particular format no matter what.
I've been using Rock Player on my Xoom to watch ripped DVDs of the simpsons and friends. Technically, they are indivual episodes ripped as mp4s. So far, it works very well.
It depends on their format. Mp4s seem fine.

most of mine are avi's will that be a problem?
AVI's work fine with rockplayer for me
great thanks mate!
So I'm waiting for my hdmi cable to come from monoprice, and I'm getting kind of anxious. I was just curious if anybody converted 720p videos and played them on a large hdtv, and how it worked out. Was there smooth playback, was there an audio delay, is the quality what you expected? Also, how are games displayed? I saw a video of someone playing angry birds on the Evo but the frame rate was pretty bad.
I got my HDMI cable yesterday. I haven't tried converting any videos and playing them on my 46 inch HD TV, but I did stream a TWiT TV video on the Xoom and mirrored it on the TV. It looked really good. The sound synced up fine, but it carries the audio on the HDMI so I had to turn up the volume on my TV to hear it. I think I'll either have to route the audio out on my TV to my stereo or I'll have to send the headphone jack of the Xoom to my stereo.
Since the Xoom screen has a vertical resolution of 800 pixels and the HDMI out is running at 720, some of the top and bottom of the screen gets cut off. If you are playing a 720 video that shouldn't be an issue though.
I'll try playing Angry Birds on it and see how the frame rate looks. I didn't notice any degredation in the frame rate though while I was playing around with it yesterday.
After playing with it for an hour or so I was pretty happy with the way it looked. I'm waiting for Flash so I can see how Netflix mirrored to my TV looks. Now you've got me wondering though. I'm going to RIP a DVD and see how it looks mirrored to my TV from the Xoom.

Netflix doesn't use flash though so it won't do you any good unless you're using an app like Playon.
I used it last night. (no 720p source)
Mainly on the Youtube app and got some issues.
Now the cable I got was 15' from amazon, but who knows how good it is.
I'm connecting it to a 27" PC monitor that has been wonky with my cable box (I think its the cable box's issue)
But that said, it restarted my Xoom 3 times. Videos would play fine and then freeze, with the tap to restart message. Audio would be out of sync for awhile, and then catch up, or freeze. Im thinking it might be the app though, I don't have any other media on it to play though. When it was working, the quality was great (other than the HQ youtube) menus looked sharp, sound was perfect.
Ill try and move some 720p Community episodes over tonight and see how they look.
+1 for community.
Hopefully it is just the youtube app, it seems a lot of people either hit or miss with that. I don't know, since day one, I have had what I would consider a relatively low amount of force closes (maybe 1-2 per day) with random stuff here or there, but some people talk about it like they can't use it at all. The 1-2 is with several hours of various usage per day, and the force close is usually when trying to open an app, not even when I'm doing anything important. I never had any wiggling on the upper half of the Palm Pre from a release day launch, never had any issues with the Evo Maybe I'm just lucky.
I bet my Xoom explodes tonight.
converting a 720p movie on my xoom tonight and trying it out..
also youtube has massive problems to begin with soo, naturally the mirroring was horrible

I have Despicable Me, 720p version, on my Xoom, plugged it in with the Micro HDMI to My 50" Samsung - looked great I thought. Mouthing I slightly off, but thats how it is on my Xoom to so no changes with that. I also played Mario Cart with the N64 App and the Wiimote hooked up. Worked great!
I have Avatar, Startrek & Transformers 2 on my device played them all via HDMI using the Rock Player app and it was perfect sound was in sync and no lag.
Played Nes & Snes and both were great too. Web browsing was also very solid.
Only one issue and that was the YouTube app. Its an app issue not tablet or HDMI... that app is unstable at best usually anyways and Google needs to update it.

Playon is the plan. Works great on my Samsung Epic that I rooted and installed Froyo on.
I made a video for this.

P.S. Oh and if you liked it please like, comment, and subscribe as I am in the process of trying to become a youtube partner so I can help off set the cost of buying all my gadgets, and hopefully eventually start giving the stuff I review away to my viewers. Thanks
Edit: Just wanted to say that the TV in the video is a 55" 1080p TV.

I have the same problem with the YouTube app when on wifi and no hdmi. I have not tried too much on wireless since I don't want to burn through my cap but the few I tried worked better. Regardless I am inclined to say it is the app and not the HDMI out.

I've been looking for a good movie player and found a app called Vital Player..it works great.try it out!! Works better than rock player and qq player to me.
The reviews complain about proper support for mp4, m4v and mkv. What is your experience?
I personally have played 720p mp4 videos on it with no problem.I will try it a bit more when I get home but so far it works great!
It doesn't play sound using my 720p mkv movies.
played sound on my handbrake-encoded 720p .mkv file but no picture...
I got an idea, I'll put my xoom on top of yours and we'll get sound AND video!
You have to slide your finger up or down the right side for sound & sliding your finger on the left side adjusts brightness. It's pretty neat.I love it so far & my movies look far better using this app than the stock player

Sound is at 100%, its the same problem as with the native player.
have problems playing back sound with MP4 video and switching it to software decoding doesnt help play anything back.
I use total video converter to do all my videos.I don`t know if that has anything to do with it.I`m watching Descent 2 now on it with no problem.Sorry that it doesn't work for you all.I tried. :-(
Ill stick with rockplayer seems to work best for me
i found vplayer to be outstanding. Plays anything. ..however since I got my zoom it has stopped working. Dev said he would work a fix. As a side note the app has a lot of negative reviews due to the fact he started charging for the app. Not fair to humbug any means.
Have you been able to make it work on xoom?

The mating of Xoom tablets is strictly forbidden by Motorola and the laws of nature.
On the bright side, you may end up with an Atrix...

Until we get a Tegra 2 and/or OpenMAX accelerated application everything is going to be half ass. I hope someone who knows how to code has a XOOM. I tried reading a basic book and I got lost. Coding isn't my cup of tea. I keep telling myself someone will cone through for us before I can figure it out myself.
I just don't get it ..Vital Player works perfect on mine..It even has a Setting especially for the Xoom so i dont see why it work for you all..I also see that there are 2 version of Vital player ..1 is called vital player neon..that one didnt work for me.I'll be buying the full version of Vital player because it plays the files rockplayer & qqplayer wouldnt play for me.
Please keep it on topic. Thank you.
I've downloaded and tried all the players on the market and still have the best all around playback with Rockplayer Universal (from the rockplayer website).
I use DVDFab to convert easily and fast, and Act 1 video player on device

Google it: tablet apps. There's a whole website dedicated to tab apps.
I use these: Evernote, Quickoffice HD.
Pulse is a really great tablet app for news articles etc. Takes advantage of the bigger screen quite nicely.

Wow... Thanks... Mx video is the best video player i've tried I just have one question. Is there any way the xoom can play 1080p mkv video files. They lag. 720p video plays perfectly. If there is no way to play 1080p mkv's, is there a format of full hd video file that can be played on the xoom. I know that full hd videos have a larger resolution than the display on xoom, but i have a lot of recorded full hd videos that i would like to keep on the xoom (so i can copy them to other computers if needed) but there is no point if the xoom can't play them and i would not like to convert to 720p. I'm willing to convert to some other 1080p format that can be played on the xoom.
Is there anything i can do?

Not that I know of. However that does not mean it cannot be done. Search tje forums and net. You might find your answer.

here is what i do. for 720p mkv, diceplayer will play the video flawless. for 1080p, i convert my movies (they are about 4gb per blu ray movie) to mp4 using dvdcatalyst, which has a few xoom presets. so yes, you can convert a 1080p video to mp4 and still keep it as 1080p. it should play with no problems using mxvideoplayer.
I prefer Dice player over Mx player. Try it out. Never had problems.

yep I bought MX and it had a few juddery moments with some video... Dice player was very smooth.. I bought that then used Mizuu as a front end and set the default player to Dice...
Mizuu is great! the closest thing to XBMC! (looking)! downloads movie info, cast, case thumb and fanart.... coupled up with a 64Gb micro SD card loaded up with media! I'm ready for my holiday!!
Files by zenfield is very nice for file managing
I use kingsoft office for word processing, although not strictly tablet optimised it is the best in my opinion and contains the most settings, its also free which is an added bonus.
I like quick office HD 5, but I wonder, does anyone know if the galaxy not uses special hardware or is it just an s-pen and software. That app/port would be intriguing. BTW every XDAer needs xda premium hd

The apps I find myself using most that make good use of the tablet landscape mode are GMail, Google Reader, Pulse News, CNN, YouTube and TweetCaster.
On the gaming side of things, I think Samurai vs Zombies looks and plays wonderfully on a tablet

Well, I use Rockplayer and Moboplayer to play my movies. My experience has been mixed. Some movies ocassionally produce some lag but others play smoothly. I attribute it to bad encoding more than anything. Otherwise Xoom is definitely capable of playing full HD videos but it downscales it to 720p on the fly and hence conversion should not be necessary. I have about 5 video players for this reason. Its a software shortcoming and different players play different mkv files properly. Till now I have not faced the need to convert my HD videos. In fact, I watched the movie Tangled in blu-ray 1080p format while reading it from an external hard drive and it played as smoothly as any other video.
