Just thought I would throw out that there is a huge difference in performance and stability on the Xoom when using Rockplayer Universal from the Rockplayer website versus Rockplayer Lite in the Market. Many(not all) of my playback issues have been solved. Hope this helps some people.

What playback issues were you having that were resolved? Are you playing avi's or mkv files?? Tried h.264 high profile encoded videos in either 720p or 1080p?
Unfortunately no, it does not resolve the mkv issues. But the overall playback quality is much improved for me. Xvid files are playing much smoother. There is much less tiling and pixelation and improved audio quality.

I have problems with Rockplayer freezing my Xoom when I play AVIs and change the scaling. However, if I leave it alone, it does play files that the stock video player doesn't.
I just tried playing an AVI and it seems to be playing just fine
Everyone is complaining about the high profile HD. It is sad something this powerful has a crazy limit or flaw but, In reality if you wanted to watch those are you really going to put that many movies on a micro SD card? Most of my TV shows and movies are avi. 10 hours of playback I want more to watch.
What I would have liked is a better way to stream from my nas. Sucks to have to copy over to watch something.

In reality yes. I want to copy what I have available quickly to the SD card and walk out the door. With the HD high profile issue, I have to convert everything I want to watch on the Zoom before I can walk out the door. Just converted a 2 hour 720p MKV movie using Handbrake and it took one hour to complete. But it does look very nice and works properly.
Is there any tablet out there that you can just throw any high profile HD video and it will play flawlessly?
Let me check, one of the best tablet right now is iPad.
No, it cannot play high profile video:
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/87921/ipad-as-video-device-not-so-much/
The iPad can only play back video files in .mp4, .mpv, and .mov file formats with H.264 video at Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps/48kHz. In other words, the iPad basically plays back video in the iTunes format and really nothing else.
So, I would not complaint much probably.
I know, there are some single core phones that can play high profile video.
But probably, Tegra 2 offers something else which those single core could not, for example: good battery life? Or ...?

Average 720P movie in high profile h.264 is under 5 GB. Xoom has 30gb free space. Also, don't forget tv shows in 720P which are around a GB for 42 minutes.
And don't forget that as soon as the Xoom is given CIFS support, it will be able, or should be able rather, to stream movies and whatever else off your network.

Just tried to rip my blu-ray movies to mp4 in 1080P, and play on my xoom. It works great.
Not to be a sour grape, but FYI this is the typical spam post I've seen in other tablet forums. Read the fine print on "About Company". They'll likely land a few catches, which should be enough for them to perpetuate the spam.
Anyone doing anything esle to rip blurays to their xoom?
I am ripping my own blu rays with Handbrake. Reducing to 720p settings at 2500kbps. Avatar looks great on it. I originally ripped it at 1080p, but I didn't really see any difference and it made the file a lot larger.
I've been using DVDFab with moderate success.
Yes, bluray can play on xoom, but you need convert it to mp4
the dvd catalyst beta has had no problem converting my blurays to 720p. Best $10 I've spent recently.
Going to try the 1080p presets for some hdmi viewing soon.
I've been ripping BluRays using DVDFab as well. Reduced the screen size to 1280X720, FPS between 22-25 and all movies have looked flawless. Audio in Stero @ 96 and raised the volume to 180%.
DVDFab is more expensive than this one as they can both do this job great
There are soo many programs out there, I found Videora that works fine, just set it to iPad and it makes a Goog MP4 file that works fine on my Xoom!

Can Handbrake really rip DVDs and Blurays? I thought it states that it is not a ripper...
EDIT: I use AnyDVD and AVS Video Converter. Unfortunately, it does not support True HD audio tracks yet I also have Cyberlink Media Suite 8 but it has only very basic settings to choose from. I think the key is to use the DivX compatible .mp4 version, not the h264 which is in my experience choppy on the Xoom. But honestly, since I have most movies ripped for my iPod @640x480 I think I'll keep them at that resolution
Using AnyDVD HD and Handbrake and I am ripping blu ray movies I own. No issues so far.
Ripped Serenity, Sector 9, Avatar, Despicable Me. Tried a variety to test it out. Working great.
I actually started putting them on an HP MediaSmart WHS server and they stream great on wifi to the Xoom.
Using tvirsity to stream off of WHS.
>Unfortunately, it does not support True HD audio tracks yet
Most converters allow "pass-through" audio. Monolithic converters aside, True-HD and DTS-HD can be processed by a number of standalone tools, to either their DTS/AC3 core, or be converted to AAC/MP3.
>I think the key is to use the DivX compatible .mp4 version, not the h264 which is in my experience choppy on the Xoom.
DivX now uses H.264 in MKV/MP4 container; it's called DivX Plus. It likely retains the old DivX (H.263) codec for backward compatibility. In other words, "DivX" the brand no longer equates to DivX the codec. Anyway, when people encode with DivX, 90% of the time they aren't using DivX, but XviD, which is the open-source, and superior, version.
You are probably using either H.264 baseline or main profile, which is simpler to decode, and (for now) works better on the Xoom.
>Using AnyDVD HD and Handbrake and I am ripping blu ray movies I own. No issues so far.
The latest HandBrake 0.9.5 doesn't support Bluray PGS subtitles, and I haven't seen indication that the nightly builds fix this. As long as you don't need subs, HB is OK for BD rips.
Like the thread title says ive seen way too many posts bashing the playback quality so to those people watch this video on your xooms browser and you will be impressed and appreciate it more

I think most people are talking about videos that they load onto the device sometimes has choppy playback. We know YouTube plays great. I haven't loaded much onto my device yet but you do experience some slowdown or choppyness I some videos. Most play without a hitch for me though

I have several blu ray rips on mine and I haven't experienced any issues so far I converted using handbrake
I think the issue is the software people use to rip.
Granted I don't have my Xoom yet but I've read a lot of threads in preparation and I think the problem is the profile used to rip rather than the software. Apparently high profile 720p isn't working on the Xoom.
Hopefully it's a codec thing and fixable by either Moto adding the codecs or some third party app like CorePlayer.

There is a Xoom profile out there that works perfectly. See middle of this page http://www.xoomfaq.com/video/
1080p is a size not a measure of quality. I had a standard def camera that will shoot a better picture than my handheld HD cam and will shoot better than any phone or tablet camera. I do not know many that can tell the difference between high quality 720 vs 1080. Probably the same folks that can tell the difference between a 160kbps MP3 file vs a 300kbps one
Real HD, that plays off your BluRay player, is 48 Mbit/s. No tablet made today can play that level of quality.
Just because nobody mentioned it..
The problem was/is that users feel that most downloadable HD content files should not have to be re-encoded to play on an $600-$800 device. It is not that we can't use handbrake, or can't figure out how to download the preset which has already been posted on XDA. It is time consuming.
I got over it though, because watching 720P Tv shows on the train with the Xoom is awesome.
I loaded a Kenny vs. Spenny episode onto a store display via my Evo's bluetooth and it played fine. If the videos I converted for my Evo work on my Xoom, then that's fine with me, and it looks like they will. I cant tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 10 inch screen unless I stare so hard I get a head ache anyway.

The link provided takes you to a page with XML code...how do you import this to Handbrake? Did you create a notepad file, copy/paste the text, and rename it with a .plist or .xml extension? I couldn't find any info on this in the Handbrake wiki.
As others have stated, its a tegra 2 issue. Tegra 2 is incapable of playing high profile h.264 video @ L4.1 or higher. Its a limitation of the video decode processor. As it stands right now, no tegra2 device has been seen playing ANY high profile video at all smoothly. Tegra 2 can play some main profile h.264 as long as its encoded exactly how the tegra2 likes it, ie no b frames etc.
The reason people like myself take issue with this is that the original ipad can play 720p high profile h.264 and my epic4g can play 720p high profile h.264. Neither of these devices were sold as being particularly capable of playing hd content. The xoom on the other hand was specifically sold as being able to play hd content, and the tegra.2 was advertised at being particlarly good at doing so. Then when both the xoom and tegra 2 are released we come to realize that it was a bs marketing ploy and "technically" it can display videos that are 720p and 1080p, but only if they are formatted in a ridiculously specific encode.

While I'm keeping my Xoom and have made peace with transcoding my videos I'd be lying if I said I wasn't expecting more from the video playback when I bought it.

This nails the issue right on the head. Most 720p TV shows available on Usenet or via Bittorrent are encoded using video codec H264 "high" settings. From what I've read, the xoom struggles to play these files, which I would not have expected given its hardware specs. I'm still going to pick up a wifi-only model from Costco on Sunday, but I may jump to the Galaxy Tab if it is able to play "high" H264 files.

I'm pretty sure I read awhile back that for small screens (like 27" and smaller), if you're sitting/standing within a distance (say within 10 feet) it is pretty much impossible to tell if something is 720p vs 1080p. It only becomes more apparent on larger screens. Other people have mentioned it's probably too difficult to tell on a 10.1" screen, but I'm pretty sure it IS impossible to tell by just looking at it on a screen of that size. So 1080p is just overkill to me, only if you're going to output it on a large screen or something.

You have it wrong. You lose the ability to distinguish the resolution the further away from the screen you get. Since a tablet is right in front of you, you can certainly tell the difference. That said, it isn't really relevant because the Xoom only has a 720p screen and that isn't the point. We already have 1080p video encoded for use on other devices/screens and we don't want to have to re-encode them to play on the Xoom.

Yeah, totally forgot to mention that. 1280x800 definitely can't play full 1080p.
And yeah, I didn't factor in the "you sit way closer to a tablet than a TV factor," but I still would find it hard to believe that people could tell the difference of 720p vs 1080p on a 10.1" screen (even if you are 1-2 feet away, assuming the screen does support 1080p). Definitely not old people - my parents at first didn't see the difference between SD and HD. Now they can definitely tell and even laugh about how they couldn't distinguish the two at first.
Yes, they don't have the best eyesight at their age now. This is why I usually drive when we go somewhere.

I have the "problem" that I ripped all my movies and shows to fit my iPod classic screen (and the car stereo) at 640x480. I unless I want to watch a mini video I'll have to convert the movies anyway. I don't see what the big deal is. If you change your hardware you should expect to run into some kind of trouble. And honestly, our 720p HDTV in the kitchen has a brilliant picture and is hardly any different from the 1080p HDTVs that we have in other rooms.
The "big deal" is for warez peeps who can't play their warez HD videos. They know nothing about video encoding, and they don't want to know. But they do like to get on forums to whine about how they can't play their stolen goods. I've explained enough times that I feel like a broken record, but willful ignorance is a hard habit to break. But once more into the breach...
@muyoso
>Tegra 2 is incapable of playing high profile h.264 video @ L4.1 or higher
There's nothing that said a H.264 video has to be encoded at level 4.1. For 720p @30fps, 3.1 is fine. Check the H.264 wiki you're so fond of quoting. L4.1 is a warez standard.
But if you want, I can post a high profile @L4.1 clip, and I'll bet it will play just fine. Will you then shut up and leave?
>original ipad can play 720p high profile h.264 and my epic4g can play 720p high profile h.264
Great, no need for you to buy anything else then.
>Tegra 2 can play some main profile h.264 as long as its encoded exactly how the tegra2 likes it, ie no b frames etc.
BS. The Handbrake script I've posted, and people have used, used straight main profile (which allows B-frames).
>Then when both the xoom and tegra 2 are released we come to realize that it was a bs marketing ploy and "technically" it can display videos that are 720p and 1080p, but only if they are formatted in a ridiculously specific encode.
What's ridiculous is expecting devices to support warez videos, all of which are encoded for the PC platform, and many of which are badly encoded.
The problem with your whining is that it's all predicated on warez, and that's not something you can offer as evidence when it's put-up time and you're asked for proof.
>Its a limitation of the video decode processor.
And you know this because how? The Xoom is the first HC Teg2 device, and it's still in beta status. Every other Teg2 tab available thus far were Froyo, and all of them were also in beta status. Everything points to the driver support.
I asked you this twice before, and I'll ask it a third time: If you think the Teg2 is incapable of playing your warez vids, why are you still here?

driver or not, high profile decoding of h264 is a know limitation of tegra2.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4181/...-a9s-coming-to-smartphonestablets-this-year/3
One of the stones we've thrown at NVIDIA is the lack of high profile H.264 decode support. Tegra 2 can decode main profile H.264 at up to 20Mbps, but throw any high profile 1080p content at the chip and it can't do it. This is a problem because a lot of video content out there today is high profile, high bitrate 1080p H.264.

I'm still entertaining picking this up instead of the Asus Transformer but I saw two things recently on a video that discouraged me.
1) Local HD Video
I've heard MoboPlayer can tackle most formats so that helps a bit, but what is HD playback like on the device? Does it stutter? Does it have a hard time playing anything 720P or perhaps just 1080P.
For some reason, the lady had a really hard time playing 1080P on this thing.
2) Clear.Fi
I haven't seen a review that actually covered this feature. This is so important to me. I sold my iPad because I wasn't happy with it. I loved Cydia and having XBMC on it though because I could pretty much watch anything.
I was hoping Clear.Fi was going to make me forget about XBMC but I haven't seen any videos on Youtube or heard people discuss Clear.Fi too well.
What's your experience been like? Do you have problems streaming specific types of files? Does it convert on the fly or does it only stream specific file types?
I'm still considering buying the A500, one of the points I had noticed was a statement from Acer that 1080p playback on the device will be available via a future update. If I recall it's due June/July
Thanks. I appreciate the heads up.
to OP.....Yes no one has touched base on the clear.fi features but from my experience just mp4 files.......and it streams over your wifi network so there isn't any converting on the fly since it only plays mp4's but it will see avi's and wmv's but will not play it ....it says cannot play format unknown hopefully when rom developement progress may some how we would be able to watch other formats like video codec installs but it kinda sucks because all my vids need to be converted to work which is sad lol

Have you guys tried streaming with the help of a File Explorer and a video player like MoboPlayer.
I remember I was able to use the File Explorer on the Gtab to find videos on the network and then watch them with my choice of app.
Clear.fi is just a transport as far as I know. In essence, it's an app like upnp that sees shared compatible media across your network. It then allows you to use a media player on the device to view the file.
So for example, if you have Windows 7, media sharing enabled and put videos into your Windows 7 Video library, music in your Music library and Photos in your Pictures library, clear.fi will detect it all over your wifi network.
Because of this, I don't think it has any hard limits as far as what clear.fi will play as it depends 100% on what your tablet hardware and software will play. For now, that's just mp4s using a certain profile when it comes to videos. Some mkvs will play too as those are just wrappers. I've also seen a thread where someone has claimed to play some realplayer files I think. I myself have played mp4s that are smooth as silk in both 480 and 720p and I have had others that were extremely jerky. This has to do with profiles which I don't have the details on. I can tell you what I THINK it means, which is that mp4s come in several "parts" and that the newest one which compresses the most data is referred to as h264 which the device can't seem to play well at all. I converted a 720p movie and left everything in tact except for specifying the resolution needing to be up to 1280x800 and for it to be in MP4 format and it played flawlessly. I use a program called Freemake. I haven't attempted to convert any 1080p.
I have an intel quad core 6600 with 8GB of RAM and that took 40m so there's no way I'm converting my entire library however it's no problem converting a few movies and maybe a season or 2 of TV in prep to hit a roadtrip or do some sort of travel. I also have an Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll membership so I don't even really need to do any of this.
This isn't a brand limitation afaik, it is due to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. We know Tegra 2's hardware can support a myriad of formats, but we don't know if Nvidia has released a full Honeycomb dev kit yet and since Honeycomb isn't open like Froyo and GB, I'm not sure if it will be indicated on Nvidias site when it is released - for all we know it's already in the various tablet manuf. hands so we just have to be patient. So far the promises for updates in June by both Acer and Asus have me hoping that the 1080p upgrade is a sign of more supported formats and some fixes as well.
Yeah I've been having major problems getting HD files to play at all- converted 480p movie to mp4 had no problems, but can't get the same converter app to spit out a 720p to mp4 file except in mkv container format. Keeps insisting on 4:3 ratio on mp4 files. Once I get it figured out (if I do lol) I'll post the app & settings
Every Tegra2 device has problems with 1080p, 720p and anything encoded with h264 with main profile and high profile (so with almost any HD video out there). So it's a problem on A500 but also on Xoom, Trasnformer and other tablets too unfortunately.

Not every Tegra 2 device, every Tegra 2 device with Honeycomb.
Tegra 2 has been out since last year and a number of the ones shipped with Android 2.2 don't have an issue playing HD video in any format. For example, this is what the GTablet by Viewsonic supported:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Mind you, I don't know if the native resolution has anything to do with it as that has a 1024x600 resolution, I do know that it played 95% more files than my Iconia does.
Do you reckon the stuttering will be fixed with an update, and when do they usually come out?
I have been doing this to help stream content and it works like a charm.
1. Download UPNPlay from the market
2. Download Rock player from their web site (the one optimized for the tegra 2)
UPNPlay detects your server and will allow you to browse your contents and will play the video with Rock player. since Rock player supports a slew of codecs you should never have a problem playing anything. I even threw a .OGG file at it and the tablet played it with no problem. Also note that the quality (lag) of streaming HD content depends primarily on your home network.
The Clear.fi app sucks...
Enjoy streaming your content.

Thanks man. You saved me $5. I was about to buy PLEX because that would take care of most format issues but I'll try this first. Appreciate it!!!
* Just tried it. Worked like a charm. I enjoy being able to pick from all the video players I've got installed but everything on my server is playing easily! Thanks again.

You still cant play mkv h.264 right? From what I have read on xoom and gtab forum its a hardware issue and not software.

Yeah I play mkv with no problem using this method. The problem is with honeycomb not with the hardware. Try it out and let me know if it works. Its been working for me.
I would agree on clear.fi sucking. I've been using Skifta with the standard WMP12 media sharing in W7 and it works great.

Its a hardware issue and every tegra 2 device has this issue. You source is not hd 720p if you can play it. Tegra 2 can only play substandard H.264 baseline profile videos and its still choppy. Most people are using MPEG4 to get reliable play back with tegra 2. Read any of the xoom & Toshiba tab forums.

I actually went to edit the post about it not being a hardware issue as soon as I posted it but couldn't because I had to wait due to me being new to the forum. I didn't have the proper information to make such a claim... Either way I have not ran across a video that I wanted to watch that I couldn't. I have been mostly watching anime on it (hi rez MKV) but I will try out an hd movie when I get home and report back.
so is it a hardware or software is that the device can't play back movies smoothly and can it be fixed?
ok so I checked out a few movies yesterday. All movies were in HD. 50% played fine while the other 50% played but with so really bad hiccups. The files I had less issues with were MKV that were displayed at 720 and were a smaller file size (probably not true 720P). 1080 video murdered the tablet lol. I have had 0 problem playing HD anime but again they are smaller file sizes. This method will play all non hd video without a hitch. Hopefully this issue is fixed shortly in the next update but that is me just being hopeful.
Does the native player of Xoom also plays 1080p video files
ie. mp4, avi, wmv, etc.
If not, does other players like vplayer, mobo could make this possible?
I doubt as Motorola Web and Wikipedia say the Xoom can play
"Up to 720p video" but sure it's not quite enough as long as HDMI it to a 32" TV.
Therefore is it possible for Xoom playing 1080p video smoothly?
Thank You. And I'm from Hong Kong (although there's nothing to do with the question )

true. 1080p will trouble as much to bill clinton.
you can convert a 1080p mkv to mp4 format and it will play with no issues. or converting, i suggest DVDCatalyst.
See, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 states 1080p video playback
I wonder is there any meaning the video playback ability of GT10.1
has overpower to Xoom?
BTW I personally hate converting.
My ideal Tab is a replacement for netbook,
which with proper software and codec
almost nothing it won't play.
So if there's something tablet is incapable of
please let me know.
Thanks for all your replies, they really make a difference.
All the tegra 2 tablets are similar software wise.
The 10.1 won't play videos any better than the xoom. Return your android tablet if you expect it to replace windows.
I've surveyed many of the players on the Android market yesterday,
and most won't play a 720p x264 Mkv with ac3.
Best is qqplayer. Next best is vplayer, but really it can't either,
So only qqplayer. If anyone knows better, please speak up.
Otherwise, use plex it is the best transcoding streaming player around..

Using Moboplayer (from market) with Tiamat 2.2, 1080p video will just about play, but its not ideal.
720p is fine.
I only play file resolutions up to 720p on the Xoom because of the native resolution. I use Mobo player for my .avi and DVD Catalyst converted .mp4 files but if I am in a rush and have a high bit rate 720p .mkv file, the Dice player plays everything I throw at it. I have monitored my usage of both and I really mainly use Mobo. Dice comes in handy when I just don't want to wait for a conversion because I am heading out on short notice and is the only player I have found to play high bit rate 720p .mkv x.264 files. I prefer converting because I can give the video files a color boost in DVD Catalyst since videos seem to lose their punch on the Xoom screen.
Dice player plays 720p no prob

I've had good results with BSPlayer.
One thing is beyond my understanding.
My past Samsung infuse with 1.2ghz single core processor was able to play 1080p itunes trailers but xoom tablet struggles.
Also Xoom has native support for .mp4 files and .mov/.mkv/.avi requires extra treatment whether extra player or software decoding.
.........................
on a general note (covers most mobiles and tablets and/or android os)
why companies release crippled products to market?
The end user is left to work out what is working and what is not.
Xoom is upper range product and it is not acceptable that it can't play 1080p files smoothly.

The Xoom does play 1080p but how well depends on the codec and player. As for why you would want to play 1080p videos on a 720p screen, I just can't comprehend. It will not look better because the screen resolution is lower than 1080p. If you played 1080p on any screen lower than 1920x1080 pixels you will not be getting the benefit of the 1080p resolution.

If you must keep the resolution at 1080p then the best thing for stutter free playback is at least convert into an .mp4 which DVD Catalyst does but again, there will not be noticeable quality increase over a 720p. If I had a 1080p .mkv that I wanted to play on the Xoom, that would be one of the times when I would prefer convert or downsize but for everything else including 720p .mkv, we no longer need to convert.

From my perspective you are badly missing the point - what use is a tablet that can play videos if you have to carry around a pc to convert them first. Its a pain in the butt.

I use Dice Player to play all my video. It is easily the best HD movie player out there and plays high profile 720p but I haven't tried 1080p. As I don't have a 1080p TV, there's no need. Check out the Dice Player trial.

Thats just the thing though, we need to be realistic. You don't have to convert any videos other than high bit rate 1080p which even if you were only using a desktop PC you would need to meet a system requirement to play. Tablets like these are new. Could you imagine a few years ago having a 1Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM and being pissed it wont play my 1080p movie in 3D? The Xoom is one of the first of it's kind and was never designed to play high bit rate 1080p and you find that a bother. It's like buying an Ipod 8 yrs ago then saying what good is this if all my CD's wont play on it. You had to rip & convert everything or buy the file which was still then converted. The screen is 720p. Most shows on T.V. are 720p or upscaled 720p (1080i). Where are you getting 1080p videos from, Blu Ray and digital copies which all need to be 'converted' in order to become a portable file on any system unless you have a disc player or made a 20GB image rip. Its not a pain in the butt to have to only convert one file type. My laptop is very powerful but cant play movies in 3D yet my T.V. can, should I be upset? I should add, Dice player is still the way to go to play all files with no conversion unless you want to play high bit rate 1080p on a screen not designed for it.
