[Tutorial] How To Restore Verizon Galaxy Tab Back To Stock - Galaxy Tab General

If you are here the odds are you are looking to take your Verzion Galaxy Tab back to the default setup for one reason or another.
Here are the steps you will need to take.
First let's make sure you have all the files and things are set up for this.
Hemdall
Download Heimdall from HERE, this is the program you are going to use to flash the needed files to your Galaxy Tab. I am putting the version I use on my sever just in case.
But here is a link to the developers page so you can download the original if you want.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
You will also need *Microsoft C++ This also needs installed on your machine because it has .dll files Heimdall uses. (I use Windows 7 and did not need to install this [I think])
Now you will need to install the drivers the is also needed for Heimdall. unzip heimdall and go into the drivers folder where you will see zadig.exe. Run this.
At the top you see options. Click "list all devices"
Then in the dropdown select Android USB composite device (or whatever it says). (NOT*mass*storage)
Click start and let heimdall download/install the drivers.
Files You Are Going To Flash To Your Tab
HERE is where you *are going to download the files needed to flash to you tab.* There are four files in total.
DOWNLOAD
cache.rfs
param.lfs
system.rfs
zImage
Ok, Let's get to flashing over the files and getting your tab back to normal.
1: Connect your tab to your PC
2: Launch your tab into download as it is already connected to your PC.*(Do this by holding the volume down and pushing the power button)
3: Go in to the folder " heimdall" and start " heimdall-frontend.exe"
4: Set up the files you are about to flash to the tab in side of heimdall.* It should look something like this.
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART!!!!!! DO NOT SCREW THIS UP - -* I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE!!
DO NOT EVER EVER EVER PUT ANYTHING IN ANY OTHER LOCATION. THESE ARE THE ONLY FILES YOU NEED.
zImage goes in both the Kernel AND Recovery slot.
system.rfs goes in Factoryfs
Param.lfs goes in Param.lfs
cache goes in the cache slot.

}
5: After you have the files in place click start to flash. ALWAYS make sure your battery is sufficiently charged or you will have MAJOR problems. (I had to push start a few times.)
After this runs you will more than likely boot loop. Power down, wait a few seconds and hold power and up volume to boot into recovery.*(NOTE, do not hold power too long, just long enough to turn it on, then continue holding up volume till you see recovery. WIPE DATA AND CACHE. Tab should boot.
Note, if heimdall fails at the very beginning, just try unplugging and turning off the tab, close, and relaunch heimdall. it will eventually start. sometimes you just need the right combo of plugging in launching the*program.
After this is should be just like you took it out of the box, other than still having root access.
Hope this helps!
Aslo, I did not do any of the work here other than test it out and retype what is on this site to make it available to those on XDA and if you read my blog.

Shameless Plug:
If this helped you out would you do me a favor and go to this site and vote/comment?
And pass it along to your friends as well.
Who Pees In The Shower?

Hope this helps some people out around here!

This should be a sticky... Just Saying

Thanks,
I tried to make sure I typed it as good as I could so people like me (mess things up often) would be able to pull it off and host all files I use so that nothing will change.
But I would like someone to look it over and make sure I did not miss something. We are all human after all.
And if there needs to be any other images people can think of to help more people out I will be more than happy to add them.

I cannot find ANY tuts like this for flashing roms, recovery, ect. You, my newfound friend, are the first. We need more exactly like this.

This is great stuff. I messed up a bunch of junk on my VZ galaxy tab and would like to go back to stock. Question about this guide: I've converted to ext4. Can I still follow the steps in this tutorial to return to stock or is there anything else that I need to do first? Thanks very much!

This post made even a retard like me dangerous enough to want to try flashing. Bump for the ext4 answer

Took the plunge anyway. Seems to have worked. Great tutorial!

Had previously used Koush's bootstrapper from the market to convert the file systems to ext4. Later tried to install KhasMek Voodoo Plus v3 kernel on my VZW tab and it nuked it (prob cause I did something wrong). Using these instructions, I got back to stock. Now to boot strap again and try, try again!
Thanks for the guide

Yeah, I think I get it wrong more than I get it right.
Last weekend I did this like 3 times in an hour.
Happy it is helping a few people out.

chaos67731, I saw in another thread you were having a hard time getting Koush's boot strapper from the market to work. Did you ever get a resolution for that?

No, I tried a few times and did not have any luck. The only thing I am looking to customize with the Tab is really to have it over clocked a little.
I just got the Evo so after I am done setting that up and getting everything worked out I am going to try again.
But if I remember right when ever I run Koush's boot strapper the tab reboots and goes in to recover mode and starts to flash something. (I think, cant seem to remember 100% right now) . Then I get stuck on the Samsung screen..
At that point I am not able to boot back in to recovery mode to wipe anything, but I can boot in to download mode and restore the Tab.
I think I have to be missing something simple?

Got the bootstrapper from the market to work again on my VZW Galaxy Tab. Formatted the SD card and then tried it again...it worked great after that!

Had a scary night last night with the old computer/phone/exclamation point error screen but this tutorial helped me out. Thanks a ton.

THANK YOU!
Thanks man! My Galaxy Tab (us cellular branded) was gone after a flash attempt gone bad (black screen and nothing more), but thanks to this tutorial it's finally back to life!!
I LOVE YOU MAN!

VZW Custom Kernel
So out of curiosity, is the Bootstrapper the only way to get a custom recovery set up for the Verizon tab? I used z4root and got the root access, but since then, I haven't had an opportunity to flash roms or kernels because of the lack of a custom recovery. Anybody think they could help ?

My Nexus S is running 2.4, seems to be preventing me from rooting

Smart people of XDA Developers
I am experiencing a problem with connecting to my phone with fastboot.
I have a Nexus S which seems to be running a custom or developer build, currently marked as Android Version 2.4
drivers are successfully installed on windows xp (had to use the PDAnet work around) but when I try to do "fastboot oem unlock" I just get the message <waiting for devices> and it sits there forever. doing a "fastboot devices" shows nothing connected.
here is the kicker, it already says LOCKED STATE - UNLOCKED (got the device like this) but without the option to send the recovery image i am unable to do anything.
also, the device isnt rooted.
if you could provide any help that would be amazing, really want to get this sorted so I can put a custom rom on it, even if there is some way that I can get it back to Android 2.3
and how did you get this so-called "developer build?"
I somehow doubt you have 2.4
I work for a mobile company, we receive handsets from the operators to use for QA
Also, attached is a screenshot with the firmware details. I'm pretty sure it isnt real 2.4 either but some sort of developer build left on the phone.

Hmm.. its very easy to change the Android version.
Baseband version is definitely something new. Samsung does radios based on the month using letters (XXJK8 -> XXKB1 -> XXKB3.. never seen JL3).
So what is it that you're attempting to do? Restoring back to Android 2.3? If so.. what version? Stock? Custom ROM?
Also.. this is probably against your principles of a employee or whatever but a nandroid backup of that so-called developer build would be interesting to take a look at. And possibly a dump of the radio.

ideally I want to get to 2.3.3 and use cyanogenmod on the phone, plus rooted obviously. I just switched to this from the Moto Defy and while the phone is nice, not being rooted is a bit of a pain in the ass tbh.
yes that might be a bit of a grey area, but I will have to see.
Uninstall the drivers you have installed right now and install the ones linked below:

all hes gotta do is make a nandroid backup and upload it :|
a dump of the radio would be cool too... if its legit
Thanks for the links zephiK, I was following that root guide before, but will try those drivers on my windows 7 machine when I get home.
will also see what I can sort out in terms of a backup of the 2.4
do I also use nandroid to do a dump of the radio?
Yea if its legit that would be kinda swwweeeet. We would have a new toy to mess around with!

Agreed. Its not that I have a particular issue with the OP, I'm just weary of anyone claiming to have test builds given that you can make the build.prop say pretty much anything you want it to say.

Nandroid backups dont flash radios. I'll have to find the steps to make a backup of the radio
And yeah. I'm just somewhat believing it because the build number and radio are different.
The radio is something I've never seen before. I don't remember how Samsung fully does their radios if someone could clarify it. (KB3 vs. JL3) I used to remember but I forgot. Regardless if JL3 vs. KB1/KB3 are newer, it would be nice to at least get the radio and compare speeds to see which would be faster. More basebands to try out.. the better right?
If OP did decide to trick us, he definitely put a LOT of effort into doing it by changing the baseband and all that. I just don't think anybody would have that much time to change all that.
Yea kenvan, that's my concern as well.

Hey its fair enough of you guys to be suspicious but really I didn't make this thread to show off but to get help with rooting and putting a custom rom on the handset, I posted the details about the android version because I have a feeling its the reason why I am having problems and if anyone can help me its the xda guys. I don't post much but I have been lurking for years using the guides and info on here.
Heading home now so ill try zephik's advice, if anyone else has some ideas I will appreciate it. I will also look into doing a nandroid backup for you guys. My main priority is just to get a rooted PHone I can put custom roms on

It is pretty easy, flash cwm (in the root guides) then select backup & restore, then select 'backup'
It will take a while, then you can boot & take the nandroid off of your phone.

boot into recovery than perform a backup. thats a "nandroid" backup. backup everything.
You can do the Nandroid in Clockwork recovery. It should make a backup stored to the SD which you can upload. It wont help us much as far as flashing since we don't have a backup of the newest radio, but at least we can look into it until we can find a way to grab the radio.

If you have clockwork recovery already you are 90% of the way there.
Boot into recovery: With phone turned off, press and hold the power button and volume down at the same time. The fastboot screen will show up. Scroll down to recovery and press the power button to select. You will boot into recovery.
On the recovery screen, scroll down to backup/restore and hit the power button. On the next screen select "backup" by hitting the power button. Wait for the backup to complete.
Next plug your phone into your computer via usb. In the recovery menu, scroll down to storage and mounts and select that. Then scroll down to and select "mount usb storage". You should be able to see your phone mounted on your computer now. Find the clockworkmod folder, then the backup folder. Copy and paste the backup you just made (check the time stamp) onto your computer. Upload that file to somewhere we can download it (dropbox, mediafire etc.)
This is exciting.

Galaxy S will not boot past the "Galaxy S" screen on startup

Hi Everyone
my Galaxy S will not boot past the "Galaxy S" screen on startup. I have read several posts with the same problem and I have tried all suggestions that I have come across. Here is what I have tried so far:
Removed battery and sim card for several hours - no change
Went into recovery mode (volume up + power + home button). Received a "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkOp1 (No such file or directory)" and "E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD: copy default media content failed." error messages.
In recovery mode, performed a "wipe data/factory reset" to restore the phone back to default - still no change
Do i need to send my phone back to Samsung or take it to a phone shop? or can it be sorted at home?
Brian
Did this just randomly start to occur? did you drop the phone? or did you try to flash another rom & thus got stuck on boot?
If not, have you tried going in to download mode? (volume down + power + home button)
Go into download mode and flash a new ROM including bootloader. You should also tick 'Re-Partition' in Odin and use a PIT-file.

Well if you can get into the dl menu your phone is just fine.
Did you read jcspecs posted link?
When you go into download mode it means your phone is ready to flash new software, roms etc, it requires the use of a simple program called Odin (3.1 being the usual preferred choice), from there you install selected roms into it's interface, you then plug in your phone (in download mode) & you let it do it's thing, all being well you'll reboot & your Galaxy S will be born again, only bigger, better, stronger & faster
Let me encourage you into a simple set up to get your phone up & running before you do anything else, once done you can then spend more time reading a lot of stuff just like most of the rest of us has had to do, once you read you'll will be in a better position to decide whether to stick with what works or whether to change, the key is finding what you can & can't do, what works for you etc, trust me you'll get the hang of it & it's well worth it!
I'm assuming your phone is Galaxy S I9000? READ CLICK--> THIS <--CLICK GUIDE THOROUGHLY!
Also take a look at THIS for I9000 models
The idea is to flash your phone back to stock firmware using the correct tools & to then flash over it with seriously better software to show you just what it can & should look & behave like, it'll also hopefully stop you from ever connecting to Kies again.... READ, READ, READ
Also watch the youtube videos by Totallydubbed provided in the links, they will seriously help you out.
simply, Brian, I want to introduce this method for you.
Make yourself understood what is ODIN flash. Please try to search this forum or do a google search. I suggest you use the offical 2.3.4 JVP rom.
ODIN to flash the room.
1st of all, make sure your phone model definitely I9000, no T959 or others.
2nd, don't connect the KIES, and in the settings-->application-->(click this) USB debugging.
3. Download the relevant files for flashing rom. Sorry, I have no link 4 U yet, but I hope it can help.

to be honest, if kies crashed your phone, and you aren't very tech, take it back and while you are at it remind samsung what a piece is sh*t kies is! It happens all too often and its about time they sorted it, failing that you can try as a above posts, and use odin to flash brew firmware

At first you have to flash a Gingerbread-firmware from Samsung (NO custom-ROM) containing Gingerbread-bootloader with Odin (flash with PIT-file and Re-Partition ticked) and then anither kernel that brings CWM to you and finally flash the custom-ROM with CWM.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Brian,
It's easy to get confused with too much reading but the answer to your problem is already provided for you in the links however we'll try this.....
Flash Ficeto's Odin JVH base rom here it will root your phone & ready to go to Darky's
As provided
1. use Odin 3.1.3 to be 100% safe, make sure phone is not connected! then press pit file & track to the pit 512 & make sure repartition is ticked!
2. press PDA & track to the TAR file in the Ficeto folder, (do not unzip it!), assuming you've done this correctly you can put the phone into download mode
3. Once in download mode connect phone & wait 10-15 seconds before pressing start.
4. Assuming all of the above steps have went well the phone will be up & running & you can begin to set it up, accounts, wifi, settings etc, once you've done that check back here & let us know & we can then get you to the next step.
Please also say how strong/good your wifi, 3G, call & internet signals are too as you may need to flash through a few different modems to get back to the same quality you had before, then again you may not, however this is a minor step after so just get flashing the roms first.
If for any reason you cannot find Ficeto's PDA/TAR file in the folder it means you've downloaded the CWM version = (clockworkmod) instead, CWM is how you flash roms from an already up & running phone via the power button, so if this is the case just make sure you download the THIS ODIN VERSION from the link provided.

Your device will end up as it came from the factory:
How I created this package:
I obtained the stock 2.1/2.2 bootloader which Trae uploaded
The stock Captivate part.pit came from my device using Heimdall(Download Pit option)
Uploaded the KB2 firmware to my device with bootloaders from nerz
Performed "wipe data" in recovery mode
Exploited the root prompt at the battery charge sequence using UART and grabbed the stock, wiped dbdata/cache partitions and params.lfs partition
Created a Heimdall tar.gz package using Heimdall 1.3
Finally, I used my Heimdall One-Click *BETA* packager to generate this one-click
This procedure can be reproduced for any custom ROM in the future.

Nice work!
Trying this out now on Win7 from Pinnacle 1.2 (RFS) will let you know results. I have been waiting to try UCKB2, thanks Adam!
Just wanting to be sure before I try and brick my phone lol.
When coming down from gigglebread, we need to use the froyo bootloaders i assume.
I dont know if its from running this in windows, but the flash bootloaders check box is greyed out for me. i clicked the details box and i am able to change the true false values for the flash column.
can i assume that i need to have the bootloaders set to true as they are set to false by default? also should i just true them all?

You wont brick your device if you don't flash bootloaders. Follow the instructions. If it wont boot, then flash again with bootloaders. This is a safety feature. If your device wont boot after flashing, then check flash bootloaders and flash it again.
Thanks for the quick reply Adam. Worked like a charm. Always a god job from you.
Adam... this is EXACTLY what i've been looking for. My wifes captivate hates every rom I've tried and I wanted to get her back to stock.
THANK YOU!
Adam,
Can I use this to go back to stock from CM7?
If you see this message:
Code:
Local and device PIT files don't match and repartition wasn't specified!
then your partitions are changed and it won't work and do not try it on Windows or Mac. On Linux, you can use this to correct the repartitioning problem and flash it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17485056&postcount=23
Thanks for putting this together. I saw a need for this, but lacked the skills to completethis complicated task. Any chance of putting together an Odin package for it?

Hell no. Odin is closed source. It also uses closed source drivers. I don't support that at all.
You edited .. sure. If you want. I will have no part of Odin until the source is opened.

Worked well via Win 7 64bit, XP although it slowed up a bit (ran it live) and on Ubuntu 11.04. Switched back to pinnacle and all is right.

Are you sure it is not simply an EBKAC error? I have to check my wife's every couple of Weeks. Simple uninstall of crap she downloaded and used for two mins plus delete cache seems to solve the problem.

Great job adam been waiting on something to be done like this with heimdall. Its a great utility and most of all open source. I've noticed less bad flashes with heimdall also and altogether less frustration.

This package worked great on both of my Captivate phones. You and Ben have done a great job along with all others who have supported the project. It will be awesome once your able to get the re-partitioning to work properly on Mac's along with Windows.
Great work. I didn't think it would work because one click unbrick didn't recognize my phone. But I opened the file, plugged in and it detected my phone. I didn't actually flash it, but I figure if it sees my phone, it should flash with no problem.

[GUIDE] BOOTANIMATION LOOP? Look here.

I just finished helping recovering another tablet from an animation bootloop and I figured it might be a good idea to start a thread and share what we've figured out with the community.
If my tablet was bootlooping and I didn't really want to do a whole lot of crazy steps I'd try installing from update.zip before doing all of this. There's plenty of information about that around. But if you find that for whatever reason the stock recovery is totally borked or whatever this method should help.
First. You have to know that this will wipe your tablet. So hopefully you've got backup. Also we need to hope that you have you SBK. If not there is a little on that later. This should work on any A500 with any bootloader. Also I didn't include much about installing from update.zips or how to recover your U.I.D. from your sd card. Those are covered in detail in other threads and are easy to find.
Also. If you have a functioning recovery you do not need this guide. At all.

Hello!
I was about to unroot and get back to stock with my A500 so I flashed a stock ROM via CWM to get a ota-update. Before i had a custom ICS ROM installed and now I installed a HC stock ROM. The problem is that i forgot to go through the wipe menu in CWM before the flash and now when I start up my tablet I first see the ACER logo as usual, then a android text-logo which the tablet is stuck at. I've waited 20 minutes and is still shows the same thing. The logo has an animation which i still can see. I've tried to restart the tablet and get into CWM again without succes.
I have read different threads for several hours but I can't find my problem. What should I do? :crying:

Here is a brief overview.
What you are trying to do is get into recovery, wipe properly and flash your stock rom. You are going to...
Get the tablet into APX mode.
Use Blackthund3rs APX tool with bundle number 17 and flash it.
Once it flashes and you restart immediately go into recovery.
Don't let the tablet boot or it will instantly erase the recovery that we just installed.
Ok. First get blackthund3rs tool fired up. There is an attachment at the end for this.

}
Choose Bundle Market. and say yes to this...
Hit the View Bundles Tab.
Choose bundle number 17.
Choose to stage the download for flash.
Once it is finished with this...
It will ask for your SBK.
Choose to use the default BCT.
From here follow the onscreen directions for the manual method to enter APX.
Now this is the key to the whole process.
When the tablet reboots you must be holding the volume down button so that it enters directly into CWM.
If you miss it and you see the bootanimation, it will be too late and you will have to start all over.
So when you get to the PASS screen. and you power it off. Don't forget to be holding that volume button when it restarts automatically.
After that it should be as easy and entering the wipe menus, then flash your rom.
I've done this one at least three different tablets and it works everytime.
Good Luck. Please let me know if I can help with any of this.

Ok. In the state that your tablet is in getting the serial number (U.I.D./SBK) will be difficult at best unless we get lucky. It is normally pretty easy to find when the tablet has USB debugging enabled. With a new install of a stock rom there is zero chance that your tablet has that enabled.
Soooo...
Hopefully when you've had your tablet connected to your pc it saved the U.I.D. or serial. Or you have a Nandroid backup or some other CWM log. You can find the serials on the sd card for those easily enough. The serial can then be changed into the sbk easily.
If you don't have any of those and you have had your tablet connected to your pc at one time or another, you can try this...
Go to this webpage http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html and scroll way way down to near the bottom and get the program. It is called USBDeview.
Once it downloads extract the whole zip to your desktop. It should be in a folder and have three files inside.
Open the file USBDeview and then first thing choose the options tab/button and uncheck "Display Devices Without Port/Serial Number".
Then make it sort by Description by clicking the words at the header of the list that says " Description". Finally look for an entry about A500, or Acer Iconia A500. Hopefully you see those. Look in the columns to the right and find the column titled "Serial Number". There may be multiple entries. But you can be sure that the one that you need will have 16 digits.
If that doesn't show any results, do this. Sort by "VendorID" ( 1 ). Then look for "VendorID" 0502 that has "ProductID" 3325 ( 2 ). It should show A500 or Acer Iconia A500 ( 3 ) Look in the serial number column if you match those IDs. It will be your serial number/U.I.D. (Thanks to sc2k for sharing this!)
If you do find the number then you are home free.
What you will do now is convert your serial/U.I.D. to an SBK. You can go here and download the program to your pc. Run it and enter your serial number.
If not then there is quite a bit of work ahead. But don't give up. It can still be fixed. And as an added bonus you'll get to play around in Linux...
That thread is here. srbeen posted a great guide and there isn't much that I can add that would help.

Once you've completed his guide you should be ready for just about anything. Maybe even world domination. Good Luck.
Nice job with screenshots.
Remember, there is a difference between "bootloop" and "boot animation loop".
Bootloop, is when the device tries to enter the OS, and boots back to the bootloader and original sequence. Over and over.
Boot animation loop, is where the animation continues to loop, is usually caused by bad data that didn't get wiped. Can also be caused by a bad kernel.
Stuck at the Acer screen, is a different matter.
3 different animals. 3 different solutions.
However, any person who puts together a guide, should deserve looking at. The steps are sound and I am sure they will help some users.
Thanks!

But a good job, and I am sure, it will help others!
And we welcome all guides that help with these things.
Oh, more to your thing, Boot loop. or boot animation, can also be caused by running an ICS rom, on an HC bootloader. Which is more inline with your guide.
Again, good job Mate.

Appreciate the comments, especially when they help keep things clear.
I've never been good at seeing all of the angles, so I'm glad your proofing it for me.
So no worries. And Thanks!
But I've been thinking about it, and this might be a good place to start when repairing any of the issues mentioned. If nothing else it is a near foolproof way to get into a working recovery, albeit with a custom ICS bootloader. But that's pretty easy to get past as well if stock bootloader/rom is what's desired.
So basically, if a working recovery is the goal, it should help.

VS980 TWRP bootloop after botched lollipop OTA while rooted like a dummy

So yeah. As the title says I had a rooted VS980 on 4.4.2 with some bloat removed and I accidently hit the wrong button when prompted for the upgrade, I was in a hurry. yes, I'm a moron, and yes, I know this is probably wasting someone's valuable time and I thoroughly apologize for my n00bishness
having said that, I have tried to go through various tuts but none of them seem to be working. yes, it's likely that I am simply doing it wrong, but whatever the case I am stuck with my phone in a bootloop always returning to the TWRP recovery. I believe that means it is soft bricked so I'm hoping this can be fixed fairly easily with the right direction and some patience for my ignorance. I can't seem to get it into download mode with turning it off, holding the volume+ button and plugging it in, it just goes to twrp. :'(
my hope is to get a rooted lollipop. if that is not possible then I would be fine with going back to stock or possibly even a custom rom if it's not too awfully complicated. honestly, I'm at a point where I'm beginning to accept that I probably shouldn't be screwing around with it too much and will likely bite the bullet and just keep my phone stock since there are really only a few minor irritants that make me want to root it.
any help is very much appreciated.

actually, it doesn't look to be the same problem. i dont have download mode, but i do have recovery. it boots to twrp like a champ. what i think i really need is how to get the flash file VS98011A_01.zip on my phone via ADB Sideload, specifically when i cant get the drivers to work.
i've tried the following drivers:
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.14.1.exe
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.20.0.exe
LGUnitedMobileDriver_S50MAN310AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3.10.1_3.10.1.0
I may very well be mistaken about what needs to happen, i'm no expert, obviously, but from everything ive read any of those should have worked. i think if i can get the right flash on the phone i should be able to flash it via twrp no?
I"ll help

i just happened to have a brand new data cable, tried again with same result so its not media related unless there is an issue with the plug itself, but it's charging and the Device manager shows the correct name ie VS980, it just has a yellow bang on it and i cant find a driver that changes that.
read some more and found others with the same issue apparently which led me to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715408
which is where i found the "download mode restore" file you mentioned(i didnt see it in the thread you provided), but without the ability to get adb usb command to work i dont see how i can use it.
any ideas?

ok, installed this:

from here:

rebooted, went straight to twrp again.
installed
Restore to 100% stock
from the same page.
rebooted. it went into an upgrade screen that errored and then rebooted before i got a chance to write down the error. but when it came back up, it started "android is upgrading".
so it looks like this may have worked. again, will update the success/failure when i know for sure, but thanks for the help yall. i really do appreciate it.

Yep, now another problem though. ..no mobile data. .. working on it.
I'd suggest flashing the files in post 12 (I didn't and am having TONS of problems)
So I really didn't get a fix- still working on it.
I have no download mode, and not way to get the serial port to display in device manager, so the LG Mobile support tool won't see my phone....
