Hi all,
Just wondering which hardware version everyone has and if a specific hardware version has all the problems. Please share your phone the version, where you bought it from, and problems you have with your phone.
I have version 0002, bought it from Sprint website on launch date and my phone has the screen separation issue along with slow Wifi. No grounding issue though.
002
-Low WiFi signal.
No other issues.
hardware version 0003
wifi is good (visual signal is weak, but speeds are fine)
no screen separation (besides what I consider "normal" light leakage through bottom of four touch keys in complete dark and 100% brightness.. kind of light seeing a flashlight through your fingers)
no battery issues (time without signal high at times, but I am currently in the woods with ****ty service to begin with)
screen grounding issues maybe 10% of the time I try it, so not a big deal.
Hoping that either my hardware version is good or that I lucked out.
purchased through studentrate/sprint.com around midnight of launch.
Version 0002.
Low wifi, that's it. No other issues.

Two Units;
Mine - Hardware 0002 (RadioShack pre-sale):
Low WiFi indicator signal (speeds seem fine)
Slight light leakage at bottom of hardware buttons
Screen grounding issues
30fps Cap
No screen separation issues
Girlfriends - Hardware 0002 (RadioShack pre-sale):

hardware version
Hardware version 0003, purchase on the 8th from Sprint store.
No screen seperation issues. No wifi issues -full bars. Tested with speedtest.net app - download speed 11504kbps, upload speed 3345kbps).
Normal use for me, about 1 hours of phone calls, 30 minutes of surfing, 15 minutes of my kids playing game, 30 or so times of checking emails and text, wifi on - I get about 12 hours of use.
Two version 2s. Wifi is okay, her screen separating, mine having the capacitive issue. Hers also has massive light leakage in the lower left corner up into the screen.
Version 0002, Google I/O Evo (bought off of ebay), no issues.
Oh, and battery life hasn't been terrible, but still pretty bad. I've used my EVO pretty heavily today with 4G turned on and it's at 11% after about 7.5 hours. I've only used it for maybe two of those hours (if even that) but when I used it, I was doing lots of stuff.
Version 2, no screen seperation issues, wifi seems strong to me. Don't know about the "grounding" issues, as I never use my phone unless it's in my hand

What are you going to do if you have to send it back? Can you take it into a Sprint store and have them replace the faulty unit with a new one?
Guess I need to give Sprint Telesales a call and see what they say...granted I am still waiting for the "warehouse" to get inventory so that way my order can be shipped off
Release 2 -
Initial GSM setting
Light leakage on lower left of screen (will attempt hairdryer fix)
Wifi speeds slow/signal weak
Battery life initially bad, getting better with Rom and battery conditioning.
002 version, pre-order at the shack.. very slight screen sep at bottom with light leak, need to be in almost complete darkness to see.
wi-fi signal is so-so
battery hasbn't been an issue
screen grounding seems to be an issue at times, sometime if i'm not holding it it seems the upper half of the screen won't register at all other times it seems ok.
002. Have light leak, weak wifi, grounding issues.
I think this whole version discussion - which is playing at 19 pages in PPCgeeks - was a good idea, but there clearly is no causation/correlation with the issues to the version numbers.
Agreed. There doesn't seem to be any correlation. Let's put this thread on pause until we see some 004s show up in the wild.
version 2 here
low wifi signal only

Rev. 3:
Grounding issue, slight light leakage
im sure we've all had complaints about loose hinges and how strong and stable this phone is. coming from a g1 and being a mechanic, i put my phone through some serious strains including: full multiple water submerging, falling from third floor, banging aginst walls and through all this i had no cracked screens, broken malfunctioning or missing buttons. note: i didnt do any of these on purpose.
Now with the g2 that i bought from radio shack, i managed to shake the hinge ridiculously and it didnt fall apart and WW3 didnt ensue, considering how everyone is having problems with this phone, you have two options
1: return the phone and get another type of phone
2: stick with the phone, buy a body glove and screen protector and wait for root
i cant really comment about software, signal, reboots, and other problems like that because i havent experienced any of this. but as far as how strong the phone is, my personal experience is pretty damn good
p.s. the hinge is slightly overrated considering it doesnt just slide out instead it slides up and then out. my point being if it just slid out then it would warrant more of a need to worry. but this is my personal opinion and expirience
I've been using my G2 for about five or so days, and I haven't had any reboots, freezes, slow-downs, or anything along those lines.
The Z-hinge on mine seems OK. It does open when I hold the phone facing down, but that's really not how I plan on using my G2. It doesn't open/close during any sort of "normal" use, and that works for me. I can see how it would be an issue for some, but it simply isn't for me.
I also don't care about the internal memory, as that wasn't why I got the phone. It wasn't the selling point for me, and I don't like storing things on my phone's internal memory. The 8GB micro SC is plenty enough for most realistic scenarios, and certainly more than enough for me.
To those who are debating whether or not they want this phone: do yourself a favor and go to a local T-Mobile retail store and check it out for yourself. Don't settle on other peoples' opinion. I think that you'll conclude that the pros far outweigh the cons.
I am on my second G2 with the third on the way due to multiple issues. These issues include loose hinges(more about that in a minute) very poor reception to no reception in exact same areas where My Vibrant and Nexus One get good reception, and the black screen random shutting down issues as well as dropping calls. The loose hinge issue was not a big factor for me until I purchased the gel skin and hard case from T Mobile. With these cases on the phone it just slides open as you pick it up or handle it at all. With all that being said I do like the phone and hate to give up on it. I am hoping the current OTA will address the reception and dropping calls issues. IMO this is an excellent phone that could and hopefully will be a Super phone. My biggest concern is that as each day goes by more black screen issues etc come up, Mine just happened today after 4 days of use.

I don't mean to come off as a G2 fanboy, but it sounds to me more like you're doing something to cause the black screens, not the phone.
I haven't heard of anyone having "black screen random shutting down" issues and I've never experienced anything like it myself.
What apps are you using? It's possible you're using an unstable application that's crashing the phone.

I can confirm having this same issue, not using any out of the normal software or even any of the temp root stuff. Also apps like twitter and webbrowser will forceclose over and over again until I reboot the phone.

wow its really messed up that you guys are having this problem because this phone is really damn great. quick question though. where did u guys buy yours?
i got mine from radio shack and no problem for me.
my thoughts are a possibility of a bad batch, just like how some hinges are loose and some arent.

I have the stock apps that come with the phone and a couple of others that I have uninstalled and reinstalled and they are not the problem. I know some people have a hard time accepting that this phone has issues on a widespread basis. Each day it seems that another issue just seems to pop up, but once again let me say that I do like this phone and hate to give up on it. I just hope that the OTA that is supposed to being rolled out will fix all or the majority of the issues.
Reboots, freezing and black screens are well documented and widespread. It's always happens in low/no signal area, someone said their log showed that it hangs on some audio libs. In any case, I hope that upcoming OTA will fix that (it does include new radio).
Hinges IMHO are not as bad as people make them out to be, at least not to me.
I have recently bought a Desire Z and have to say I am hugely disappointed with it thus far. I am finding that the battery life is poor and more worryingly I am continually losing my network signal. I had an HD2 previously and had none of these problems. Just wondering if the way forward is to go down the rooting route, will this improve things. I am currently on stock rom/ radio on t-mobile UK.

Never had these problems since day one... if you got dz just recently, you should get it replaced, may be it is a defective piece of hardware which is why you are losing signals and battery won't last long enough. I never had a problem with dz/tm g2's battery or network signals even with stock rom. after i flashed different rom, battery time goes up and down but never seems to be bad.
Yeah I honestly have not had any problems with my G2. I love it. My only gripe is the loose hinge issue...I took mine apart and stretched the spring to help, but it's still a little loose. Never had any issues with connectivity or battery life.
If the only real problems are battery drain and signal loss, it could be an issue with the radio. You can certainly root it and flash a new radio to see if that helps alleviate the issues. If not then there are guides here on how to put it back to factory conditions, which I would do, and see if you can get it replaced.
Or just get it replaced first and see if the next one is any better. I haven't had any issues with mine. I got it in February of this year and this is by far the best phone I have ever owned. My fiance has an HD2 which is giving her nothing but problems (kinda the reverse of your situation).
Thanks for your replies. Wondering if there is a network issue, as my wife has an HTC Wildfire which is doing the same signal loss thing, don't know if the DZ and Wildfire have anything in common which would cause this problem? Just seems odd that we have both upgraded to HTC Android phones in the last 2weeks and both now have issues.

May be it is an issue with network? Sometimes I have strange issues with Rogers, it usually happens around same area and the same time of the day, each time it happens. I wouldn't be able to do anything with my phone during the period of time if I am in the area...
Speaking of HTC, they make a very nice piece of hardware, I have seen pictures of HTC phone saves a life of a person hit by a bullet... So far, this is my 3rd HTC phone, never am disappointed, may be you just having hardluck.

How do you hold you phone? The bottom half inch on the back of the phone is your antenna, and if I cover that with my hand while holding my phone my signal goes to ****. I have adapted and now hold it with my left hand thumb and index finger.

Also I have taken to putting the phone in my pocket with the screen facing my body. That way it has better signal, doesn't use battery searching for signal. Also, a good failsafe to protect your screen.

I am running the CM7 with the newest OTB kernal, and I am still getting the keyboard randomly popping up, the back key randomly will work 2 or 3 times in a row. I had the same problem on EF 3.6, com rom and even on the SC roms. Has anyone else had these random key strokes? I heard it was a froyo related issue? Is it hardware related? I had a screen protector that covered the soft keys and removed it, but it is still happening. Any thoughts on how to get rid of it?
FWIW I have odined back to stock, with the atlas pit and even used the ext4 reformatter before I switched to EF3.6.
Any help, advice or thoughts would be great.
I encounter the same issue but it always seems to happen when on the edge of losing cell signal. When going back n forth quickly from service to no service the capacitive buttons (I believe that's what they are called) seem to push themselves. And I have noticed this issue since DJ05 on any rom I have flashed since then and any kernal. I have run just about every rom posted except for miui and cm7. I can not confirm if cm7 has this issue because it is on my other fascinate and not on the cell network. I have terrible signal in the building at work and I have always seen this happen there, at least once a day.
You know am pretty sure I replied to this question before. I guess no one else has really has this issue and the thread died.
Also didn't matter which radio verison I used. I have come to terms that my fassy is just possessed lol
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
apparently you and I are the only ones that it happens to. I was hoping someone could give me some insight on how to at least find some relevance to a rogue program, bad kernal/rom combo or something. It's very strange and it does it to me more than once a day, and I have good signal most of the time.
Happens to me all the time when I'm at home where I have terrible signal.
I just started having this happen on CM7. The keyboard or the menu would randomly pop up. For me it happened more than just when I had bad signal, but it did seem to happen more often when I had poor signal.
I have this problem too, it would back out of apps I am in too. Quite annoying.
I've been having this problem as well on CommRom 2.1. Seems to be related to poor signal for me. It's pretty annoying to deal with.
Happens on a stock device also

Um. No. Not in my experience. Its something that has been well known that is associated with weak/intermittent signal. Didn't start for me until Comm Rom and became more pronounced with CM7…
This happens to me too. Oddly though it only seems to happen during the night when it's plugged in and it doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes I will wake up in the mornings and my screen is on and the keyboard is up.
Do a search for phantom softkey presses. It's pretty common and is a hardware issue.
I as well have this happen. Mostly it happens in low signal area. Recent, my keys just stop working, until I got better signal, or sometimes I am forced to restart the phone.
I just went back to stock ED05 mainly because of this ultra annoying issue and I am completely devastated to find out that it's still #$*%ing happening.
I am so pissed too because I called VZ a week ago and they offered me the Charge replacement, but I couldn't make it to the corporate store until yesterday where I was informed they stopped the replacement policy that day and that I was SOL. Argh. So angry.

I commented on this a while ago in the CM7 thread. I have it on stock ed04.
What I wanted to know was if you guys have a screen protector on yours or not.
I wondered if my Zagg Invisible Shield was what was "pressing" the capacitive buttons.

Verizon makes a metric **** ton selling screen protectors to those spending $200+ on a smartphone that doesn't need it.

Well, just to back this guy up. I had it happen back before and during the time I rooted my phone, and it still happen after I returned to stock (via Factory reset and OTA updates).
EDIT: To the guy who asked about the screen protector, I did have a ZAGG on there, then took off only the section covering the softkeys. Still did it even after I made sure to fully clean it to eliminate any residue. Took the protector fully off, same full cleaning, and it seemed to have gotten worse (if thats possible lol).
I'm about to call tech support, but wonder if it's worth it now that the good trade-in is over.

yeah im sure it happens but its fairly rare on a stock phone i would say....
I have it happen semi-regularly. I'm currently on MIUI 1.7.22 / Glich 11.1 / ED05 radio, and never used a screen protector. I also had it happen back before when I was on Super Clean 2.9.2 (don't recall the radio), as well as most any other ROM I've been on.
It's not too uncommon that I would hit the power button to turn off the screen when back on SC2.9.2 and instead it would take a screen shot, because it assumed the back button was being held down!
Gotta love the Fascinate...

Yup, I got the same issues! Although minor, these things just shouldn't be happening? There's gotta be a fix for this?!?!?!
Anyone else experiencing this issue? I'll be on the phone chit chattin away with no issues, then usually anywhere between 30 seconds to 5 minutes my phones mic will cut out, I can hear them fine on my end but they cannot hear me at all. If I end the call then call them back they can once again hear me. This was happening before any mods. Figuring that it could be a ROM issue I Odin back to stock but MDC since I had upgraded to MDL then did some tinkering to touchwiz, shabbys kernel and some theming and I still get the problem. I am assuming at this point its a hardware issue but I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem at all.
Thanks
Edit: forgot some info. I have a sprint s4 full bars in location, happens just about anywhere, WiFi disabled, 3g area only here in phx
Happening on my wife's stock gs4 but not my stock rooted gs4. She is also having some heat issues. Screen/battery getting hotter than normal since day one.
Going to store tomorrow. Fun fun...

Yeah I'm going to restore mine right now and take it in. Its makes me a little mad knowing this is already happening and I haven't even had it a week. All will be well if they fix it.
I've returned two phones because of this issue, now I'm thinking it's just a hardware bug.
Don't use voice enough to switch to a different one, although it's very annoying.
Yeah I was going to return it but I have been testing the theory that i have been covering the mic hole. If you cover it at all so one will hear you. So far I haven't really had a problem but I don't talk on the phone that much
I've experienced the same thing
I just got my S4 on Sunday, and today it did the exact same thing. Not sure if its just typical Sprint problems, or actually an issue with the phone. Have you experienced more issues?
For me it happened twice in one call, once for like 10 seconds, then again and the other caller just hung up because they couldn't hear me.
Trying to decide if this is a QC issue, or just a one off problem.
I really haven't had any further issues. I know that some of my cause was them repairing a tower. Its only happening when I over the mic hole from what I am seeing. I guess time will only tell if it is a true hardware issue
