Hi,
I usually reinstall my HTC Hero with a different ROM every 2-3-4 weeks. Not because I enjoy it, but I experience that a newly installed ROM is quite fast, then over time, gets slower and slower and ends up being unbearably slow, kinda forcing me to reinstall.
My question is, how do I get around this? How do I prevent my Hero from being slower and slower so I can just install one ROM and stick with that?
I am quite sure that my flash has a swap (not 100% sure though, how do I check it?) and I am using a class 10 flash, so I guess it should be fast enough and not slow anyting down.
Also, I tend to think that it's a good idea to move all not so frequently used apps to SD, to free up main memory, but I am unsure if this in itself actually slows things down instead?
Any comments would be great.

The fastes ROM that i used on my hero was VillainROM 13...and damn is that fast or what...Now i use Salsa Sense 4.0 and the only problem is that it killes sometimes my SetCpu and it gets slow...
I'm now sure but i think that a 2.2 stock rocks on the hero...but elelinux has a GB rom that rocks (recommend if you like stock roms ).
PS: clock the phone @ 691 and you will get speed

if you like games i recommend VillainROM 13...even if is a 2.1 android rom but it's fast... If you want a everyday use SalsaSense 4.0 is fun but has some bugs sometimes...
If you want stock android i recommend ele's GB ROM
I see this problem to sometimes but i noticed that the GB internal task manager killed setcpu
I have tried a few different ROM's and best one i have used is Elelinux Speedmachinev4, went to the market and downloaded Android Optimizer ToolBox, and got rid of all the apps i did not need or plan to use (you could also use Adb command line to achieve this aswell as a few other methods), and used the cyanogen setCPU to overclock my CPU to 710mhz. Also using Adavnced Task Killer set to auto kill apps every 3 hours.
And all above combined i have never had lag or slowdown or any problems what so ever.
What utility do you use to flash?
I mean, I had this problem ages ago, I was using AmonRa Recovery..the gradual slowness was becoming a problem for me as well, so I did 2 things:
1. Got myself the latest AmonRa version.
2. Got the latest Radios and Kernels.
Haven't had a problem yet..
yes, same with you,I ususall re-falsh rom again,it is best solve for the issue.
You just need a faster/better rom on your Hero. If your still having trouble I recommend Kimera Rom its stable and very fast.
I've found that certain rom's slow down faster than others, for instance I've been running OMGB for two months now with no problems. Other roms take less than a week to slow down, and lose their 'smoothness'

When you are trying to run an app from your SD card, it takes longer time to receive data to your phone, so you are supposed to separate usual apps and games on different districts. And, installing too many unnecessary things on your phone will make your speed slower, so clean up your apps every months or even weeks is a good habit.
i never had this kind of problem, couse i change my roms almost every day
Hi
I just wanted to ask if anyone using an ICS ROM (e.g. Onecosmic's) is getting normal USB transfer speeds when using to copy from PC to Phone.
I'm using Oncecosmic's RC3 build (which states the speed issue should be fixed), but my speeds are only reaching 1.7MB/s. Can anyone confirm if they are getting faster?
Thanks!
All kernels that are based on 3.0 have a slow usb transfer.
Thanks Malcho,
So a speed of 1.5 - 1.7Mb/s is average?
I've already reported this problem to the google-code page.
I also have this issue. It is actually kinda fixed, but only on the recovery. Trough recovery I get a speed up to 10Mb/s data transfer rate, but if the phone is booted up, I cant go over 2mb -.- Thats kinda sad. Is there the same issue with nexus s? Does somebody know somethin about?
Thanks for the confirmation alexx910!
I had a quick search and I think Nexus S users are experiencing similar speeds. Someone mentioned it could be due to the system format ICS uses (not EXT4).. but it's a bit over my head
I think it's not ics related.I had same problem with fugu kernel on cm7.Fugu is 3.0 based kernel.
Well that is really sad. And because the nexus s have the same problems with the speed and we all know, that our ICS Rom is a direct port from nexus s, we suffer under the same problem :/
(they had 4mb/s, now 1mb/s, its ok to live with, we had from 8mb/s to 1-2mb/s, that is really bad)
And I dont think, that there wont be a bugfix in the next time (1-2 months)
I have this problem

This worked for moving my files thanks! Was waiting hours for transfers and never thought about doing it in recovery!
Confirm, very slow.
got 2.5mb/s with icssgs 4.2 and devil 14.2
Tell now with all roms and kernels i get less than 2.0Mb. Around 10.0Mb using CWM.
Sometimes the device freez when trying to transfer from internal sd to external one.

It is fixed for me at RC4.2 . Speeds around 7-10mb/s
AOKP build 23 beta 2.1 with latest Glitch
I noticed that when I'm copying files to SD, the phone CPU usage is high.
Maybe phone want to scan files that are currently writed on SD and that's the reason of slow transfer?
Ive been suffering slow USB transfer using TeamHackSungs CM9 alpha since the first build. Transfer rates are around 1-1.5mb/s.
Using stock Samsung ROMS (Gingerbread) id get around 5-6mb/s consistently.
No problem on speed on RC 4.2, almost same as the speed I'm getting when using stock rom.
USB Transfer Speed is too slow (only when transfer data from computer to phone - about 2.5 mb/s)! When transfer data from phone to computer , speed is near 10 mb/s!
Team ICSSGS 4.0.3 RC4.2 with semaphore 0.9.1
What is the problem!? how and what needs to be adjusted to work properly! on stock [kernel] everything is fine!
soooooooooo...
no fix? Slim ICS 3.1 + semaphore .0.9.8 - 2,5 mb/s max. =/
Flashing them is fine but they never run properly on my phone, they always lag or freeze or restart really often. Any other roms besides sense, run perfectly such as the HyperDroid. Can anyone enlighten me on why this happens?
Well i can recommend HD2 CoreDroid HD V1.7 FROYO i have been using this ROM for a couple of months now very stable very fast great if you need your phone on a daily basis.
I have a EU device and this ROM has 1Gb internal Storage plus SD card capacity for applications and around 140mb free ram, It's not the most up to date but it's stable and all working
I run sat-nav parrot bluetooth plus many other apps all working great

Well I don't know about the freezes and restarts, but lag and Sense go hand in hand unfortunately UI is great but any GB/Sense ROM is just slow, and Froyo/Sense (like the suggested one) is speedy but outdated. If I were you I would stick to CM7, it can be themed very well to look like Sense

I do not agree! I am running RCMix3D v5.1 and marc1706's v0.1.8 Kernel and it is very very smooth! It just works. I would recommend you to try this combination.

This sounds like an sd card issue to me...
The sense roms are heavy, the runny roms use sd-ext for extra memory...
Where you using an sd-ext partition for example ext3 or ext4 ?
If you where that would be the sd card causing an issue as a result, are you formating through sdformater tool?
Try another sd card if you can and give it a spin,
Good luck!

Try a larger partition than the one mentioned in their threads. It could be some bad blocks that are preventing some components from being installed, which may cause some lags, freezes or reboots.

Did you try the larger partition size? Also, you can try MIUI if you want the quick settings to be in a separate tab, although using the built in notification toggles in CM7 is enough for me. You can add loads if you want, in Cyanogenmod settings.
I've been having the same issues. I've found a 2.2 android with 2.1 sense, can't remember name, that worked really well, but needed different apps for my emails so I've been experimenting with tosty's v7 ics and its been nice. Try searching for a sense from with the specs I wrote.

Well I bought the Samsung Galaxy S2 three nights ago and I love it!
Hey there! Its me again... I'm wondering if I hace to change rom or not, but will ask either way...
What's the best, or what are the best rom 4 the phone that can actually fit in 150Mb of System partition?
I'm actually using build 3 from tejas12, as it seems to be the bugless around, but been seeing lots of roms around and I just would like to know which rom, o another rom to test...
150 System partition gives me 220+ data partition... Sadly, I use some apps that can be name as memory eater, most of them are at SD but even that way, I still need the space, actually I just hace 25Mb free, just close to the notification of the lack of memory =/
Any help?

If you need more space for apps, create sd-ext and use Link2SD, you'll have more free space on your phone's memory.
Its not the same than just move then to SD ?

It is not same, for link2sd you need ext partition. Diference is that with link2sd you can move everything (lib, dex, app) what is not best to do.
About your question... just download any rom you like, recovery version, and use 7zip to shrink it. Remove some apps that you dont need, you can remove media files that you dont need to. I do that all the time, and it work without problem.

This ROM is the best - #2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145302
Hey, instead of making new post I decided to bump up this one.
I wanted to ask which ROM should suit me best - I use this old (but good) phone mainly for calling and as tracker for running. So for me most important thing is GPS strength (I've tried several ROMs and some find signal really fast and some take up to 10 minutes) + not freezing when playing music + sports tracker app (Endomondo/Runkeeper) is open.
So far I've tried:
1. PolishVodka's ICS and JB ROMs are almost perfect. Very rarely it freezes, but amount of free RAM is less than GB and running music + sports tracker make my phone sluggish. Anyway props to PV, I'm looking for alternatives not because his ROM is bad, but because our device is just too old for new android.
2) Zoe ROM 6.5 and 7 - honestly I just don't see where is speed in this ROM. Yes, there is more free RAM, but for me it runs slower than 4+ ROMs.
3. Miroslav's 2.3 clean ROM - liked this one because I could customize whatever I wanted and nothing preinstalled + had like 90 MB free RAM, but even after changing system language text under icons was still in Russian.
So I want GB rom (because they run better and more free memory) with strong GPS fix. Working WiFi deepsleep could be nice since I have phone connected to wifi almost all the time, but it's not priority since I leave it charging almost every night.

Just installed cyanogenmode for the first time in G2.
Thanks guys.
edit:
and last question, can i delete the roms on my sd card after i flash them?
and also, I think my G2 is running slow after flashing the latest CM especially when playing games like riptide, unlike when my phone is on stock jelly bean. Is it because CM is still on beta? I've seen comments that their phone runs better after flashing CM, but mine seems to be slower than stock.. >.<

You will need to find an app from the market that supports the wireless storage over wifi feature, since this feature is not in CM. I heard there are a few apps that can do this.
My phone is performing better than anything I've ever seen during gaming. I use CyanogenMOD with the custom kernel on here and tweak it just right so it (probably) kills my battery but is smoooooth during gaming.
Manage to install the kernel. Now, can you please tell me how to enable fast charging in this kernel? Thank you
