Another noob question (hopefully I'll get enough posts here so I can start asking more indepth questions):
I've seen many themes that say "Port" after them. What does that mean? I'm not having luck finding them in the Q&A sections.
Thanks.
Port is generally used to mean it came from something else, such as porting a theme created on one phone to another, or porting an application from, say, iPhone to Android.
I think Port means to take a theme/ROM developed for one device and make it work for another device.
Ok that makes sense. Thanks.

I noticed that a lot of builds are lost in the chaos of topics here in development, I was wondering if there being a separate child board solely for builds would be a good idea...I'm not sure who runs that, but I think it would help with the clutter.
Delete this topic if it is too off-topic...
how about making it a read only for non devs? in my head im seeing a change log like thread for each build. where the devs can comment, and post common fixes and such on each others build, im not sure how easy of a feat this would be, but the mods are all mighty and I believe they can do this.
I'll third that motion
It can be difficult to find builds sometimes if I can't remember the devs name (which often isn't even a real word.)
The only problem I forsee is who decides what is and isn't a build. If I package JF1.51 with a few custom wallpapers and new ringtones who decides whether or not I'm a dev? Where do you draw the line as to what is development and what is just end user customization?
I figures that would be an issue.
Maybe established builds like the thedudes and cyanogen. Twistedumbrella has done some serious work in android as well. They have my vote as being in the build section
In an effort to help cut our clutter down, this thread should be used for all general feature requests.
First request:
Use the other forums for non-develop related posts.
Second request:
Aosp ported to the eris.

^^ This ^^
A proper tutorial for changing splash1 - DONE
A proper tutorial for boot animations -- including all the ins and outs of image creation/format, programs that are used, and a more complete description of desc.text and how to use it.
I'm all for helping out on those as well pm if anyone would like to exchange info before creating a nicely formatted thread based how to. I'll prolly drop in to chat at some point when I get time too.
PS: I think we should start putting our how-to threads in the general section to avoid people posting randomness in the development section. Since at that point we should be doing minimal development anyway and development related conversation could still take place in the proper forum. Also this could be put in the general forum once people catch on.
All those in favor say Aye.
somebody please make a better dialer... It is the bane of my existence
aosp
Forgive my ignorance, but what is aosp?
theme development
now that we have root has anyone taken a shot at a skin for eris? maybe port some of the wicked cool stuff they have working on the hero side? tons of notification bars, clocks, rosie scrollers...and so much more...just excited to see where our devices can go.
To the devs, thanks for all your effort. For those who are impatient ect just know these guys n gals have work, school, families ect and all they do for us is on their own time...so that being said be courteous and thankful and most of all patient...development has to well...develope....

AOSP is the Android Open Source Project, which is the latest open version of Android, Codenamed Eclair at this time. Its roughly the same as Android 2.1 release.
My Requests
All HTC Widgets including the new ones from the desire/ legend (Friendstream, RSS Reader, Today in History etc.)
Re-skinned Sense Bottom Bar (Some Hero Roms have a rectangular one rather than the curved one we have)
Speed/ Battery Optimization
speech to text
A larger camcorder resolution would be nice, at least the resolution the phone runs in. Also an overclocked processor.
Could anyone see about Using Dialer One as the default dialer app? Like when you press "PHONE", Dialer One comes up instead? That would be great.
I thought that this section was unique crap for Galaxy S2. Looks like we will have same **** soon.

Yea ive seen it on other sections before, But I dont fully understand it
What the hell is 'original development' ??
What is the current development ? Un original ?
whats with the need to add un-necessary sub sections ? It just fuels confusion
Maybe "original" means "real". So there will be a chance to distinguish between cloning/adding/tweaking from development
Do we need / want it ?? I think we should open up a poll and pass the results on to the mod(s)
We had a similar thing in the HTC One S forums, Where they added a subsection for Tmobile Versions, It was totally un-needed as there were no differences between the 2 devices. We made a poll and the section got removed.
Sometimes these things do more bad than good, As if the flashing procedure isnt difficult enough already, What with the brickbug and all that.
If you think its a good idea to remove it, Ill open a poll before the section gets full with stuff.
Why not wait a little bit and see what it should be used for?
One Mod will explain sooner or later...
lets just hope its something useful
Is it so hard to understand? All stuff about original roms goes in there.
What do you mean Original ROMs ? Things like Stock TW ROMs ? Or does that include Custom ROMs too ?
Only in the SGS2 threads the 'original' section is full of custom ROMs and kernels too.
I mean this device is almost 12months old, We've survived without it.
Im just old fashioned Change freaks me out
Confusing?
Hate It?
Simply Don't Open It

wish you could enlighten us on how it was a unique crap and a **** for s2 then?
original = stock = cooked roms
the other thread will be for "really" developed roms i.e, aokp/aosp/cm9 variants
So if some one builds a ROM based on Cynogen Mod from scratch..will it be in original section or since its from CM it will be in Development
btw this was the rule posted there
The following are most likely “Original Development”:
Official releases of highly original and upstream custom ROMs (built from the ground up with significant original development within them
Official releases/development of such original ROMs, perhaps posted by the maintainer or their nominated person.
A significant “first” in development for a device. Significant is subjective, but it is likely something which took considerable time/effort, and is generally accepted by developers to be significant and non-trivial.
Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are not simply pulled from other kernels already available. Some element of original work is expected.
Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made, and useful to users. They should have an element of originality, either in purpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to users of the target device. The port should be beneficial (a port from two virtually identical devices isn’t original development, it’s winzipping, and nobody really benefits from this, as it’s not development)
The following are most likely not “Original Development”, and should be posted in the “Android Development” subforum:
Your own “unofficial” stock build of your favourite original, source-built (or otherwise) ROM, particularly where an official or maintainer-endorsed thread exists already.
Minor derivatives of other ROMs with little or no changes, or ROMs consisting of “placebo” features as a main constituent or claim.
Renames or rebadges of others’ work – these don’t belong on XDA at all! Refer to rule 12 for more information.
Reposts of existing ROMs with small changes (i.e. kitchen work, such as adding a couple of apps). If you could realistically distribute your changes as an “addon pack” above and beyond a ROM, you should do so. In addition, your “ROM” would not be original development as it would be substantially identical to the original ROM.
A thread created with unrealistic goals that are clearly unachievable by those starting the thread. This is not intended to discourage high aspirations, rather to prevent threads porting Windows Phone 8 to the HTC Wallaby. This is pretty much common sense.
A ROM where a main or significant claim/feature is graphical changes to the user interface (ie. Themed ROM)
i get the idea to separate the genuine development from the WinZip one, but it may not be that easy in practice to distinguish those lying somewhere in between
See Here
XDA, the moderators and the powers that be.... have been wrestling with trying to differentiate the Difference between the Code-writing Development and the Quasi-developers that use rom cooking tools.
To that end we will be going through the development threads in the next couple of weeks and moving the appropriate threads that meet the original code requirement to be placed in this new forum.
Please bear in mind that this is a "Work in Progress" and will take a bit of time to hone and perfect what goes where.
Also, please understand that this does not mean that some developers are on some special pedestal. That is not the case.
I will use an analogy to explain:
A music composer writes an original piece of music. The music composition may be awesome... but his performance of it, may not.
Such often is the case in developers..... often someone comes up with a awesome idea or new code application, but it often ends up being perfected by the use of others putting their creative spin on it.
That is the beauty of The Android Platform and ....XDA provides a fertile field for all to share ideas and collectively improve our experience
I hope this clarifys the potential questions
Thanks from the Moderators

At the end of the day everything is built from something else but what they are getting at is ROMs that are just other roms with maybe a new theme and tweaks taken from else where would just be in the normal development.
But if you came up with something new and different (not just a rehash of other peoples work) then it should go in original development
Now its starting to make sense, well ive always reverted to one particular rom (cleanote) so i guess i wont be affected.
maybe its for the best, there are a lot of similar roms out there so it might make life easier.
Im still adapting to the new xda theme, any more change after this and i might self destruct.
Want me to start a poll?

It makes alot of sense, will make it easy to find new and 'bigger' development work against the small tweaked roms which while important are starting to fill up the forum
It was tested in the S2 forums and has been rolling out XDA wide so theres not alot a poll will do, in honour of the hitch hikers guide of the galaxy, the plans have been on show for quite some time, if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that’s your own lookout.
Hi devs,
It seems that there' s a Sense 4 ROM ported to Desire almost working... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858491
If someone can port the ROM to our HD2 should be great !!!

This thread isn't useful though. There hasn't been any significant development for Sense 4 since the Blackout thread was abandoned, and all he's doing is linking to a ROM which everyone already knows about and saying 'port this'. With the [DEV] tag that he's decided to use, the least he could do is provide some work of his own. There have been so many threads just like this as well, so why create another one when it's almost certainly not going to see any progress?
As stated above, pretty sure a lot of people are aware of the Desire ROM approaching readiness. I'm sure once it's right to go, some brave soul will bring it across.
Until then, patience is a virtue my friend
Thread closed.
First thanks to all developers, who makes mi a1 more flexible with Thier custom roms,I here to make some request to you developers, people's here getting bored of trying android 7.1,8,8.1 versions with the same source, all developers making the same rom with different names,we all are looking for something interesting like UI,themes and launcher based roms, pls make some moded roms with UI of miui, flyme os,samsung,Baidu will make mi a1 more interesting, ppls who like to support this theard write your suggestions to know those developers with all respect, thank you, have a nice day
I don't want to be rude. But why would you post it here of all places?
1. No developer is going to even read this post unless it creates a "boom" on the internet.
2. These ROMs are, and will be developed the way Google and other corporations want, and the way they'll get the most money off of it.
3. If you are that desperate, make the ROM yourself.
Have a great day.
I will try not to be rude, and i am sorry for if it feels that way.
First of all, if you are requesting, why make a Q&A thread?
Secondly, the ROMs which you currently have are highly customizable; yes they are all based on the same vanilla android, but that cannot be helped unless somehow Google is to release new android versions every month; moreover, each of these ROMs them have their own unique features to an extent. You can theme your phone to your liking and you can change to any launcher you want, so i don't really understand what is your request?
As of the MIUI, it might come as a ROM for the device in near future and for the others I don't really think anyone would want TouchWiz running in their phone instead of vanilla android.
You can literally do loads to customize your device and would suggest you look into it deeper.
Ok I will try to be rude.. just stop requesting roms. Devs work on their own free time. And you have no right to ask for roms.. if one day someone does decide to port miui or others. It will not be because you requested.
"people's here getting bored of trying android 7.1,8,8.1 versions with the same source", speak to yourself.
Also, if you are tired of stock feeling, why the heck did you buy an Android One phone??
Let's follow the forum rules, shall we?
I'm sure he has gotten his answer already.
OP didn't even asked a question in the first place. Oh, wait, shall all answers begin with a fake "I don't want to be rude but..."?
It's not fake. It's true. I just said that you should mind your language.
