If You Don't Have Flawless Froyo - Epic 4G General

If you have any issue with froyo what so ever I would HIGHLY RECOMEND you use the guide to upgrade to eb13 in the dev section and odin eb13. This was my first time using odin. Which I had to go from dk28 ext4 to eclair and then to eb13. It was very easy and it runs sooooo awesome. No lag or any issue what so ever.
Epic 4g

Also it seems like most of the issues that some of you are having is because there is a few different methods to upgrade to froyo. Those methods may not wipe cache and data like it should, odin wipes everything. The odin method is the cleanest and the safest method. And you are gauranteed a bad ass phone afterwards.
Epic 4g

I am no expert in these matters, but I believe that using the ODIN process to go to DI18 then to EB13 is a waste. I think the .exe file on the Samsung website completely obliterates all of your phone data (not SD card data), and loads the new OS. I went from DK28 to EB13. I lost root and ALL of my in phone data. That is part of a complete device wipe.
My phone is running really well so far.

You are suppose to back up data or use titanium back up. Re root using the old 2.5
Epic 4g

I have screen rotation lag and video camera is blurry ....is there a way to fix that???

Sorry I wasn't clear. I KNEW it would be a full wipe, and had my stuff backed up. I was just trying to explain why I think ODIN to DI18 is useless compared to .exe on Samsung site.
For the record I am already rerooted and have selective things restored.

I'm currently running MeatROM v106.1 with eb13 overclocked kernel with ext4 by rodderick and the eb13 modem. My phone is so wicked fast and surprisingly smooth. Idk if I want to change my ROM when new ones come out for fear that it will dissappoint. I was sitting in my living room and tried google maps after replacing my modem. It got within 1 meter in about 5 seconds. My phone is 100% perfect right now.

Yep..I saw the topic to fix rotation lag...but in order to do that I have to be rooted...and I'm a noob ... I'm afraid I can brick my phone.
Thanks anyway

These phones are almost unbrickable so I wouldn't let that stop you also the rooting process is extremely easy. You just run a file from your pc and your rooted
Epic 4g

My video recorder also seems kinda stuttery. Used the update.zip. the official one. Not too big a problem for me though. I'm sure if its fixable, itll get fixed down the line.

Search for the app "Z4root"...it's not in the market, but is here on xda. Used it right from the phone to root my epic and it was fantastic. the app froze a couple times, but I just rebooted the phon and tried again... worked just fine. As far as I know it's (almost totally) impossible to brick your phon with z4root.
Epic is as Epic does

Also I don't use the auto screen rotate

wow that was couragously fast. see, no brick

I flashed to eb13 and found my epic running slightly slower than when I used the update.zip. could really see it in the launcher. Ended up flashing back to eclair and then using update.zip. and could not be any happier.
I never had the auto-rotational bug some of you talk about and I will be the first to admit that there is no reason why one should be different than the other.

I went from bonsai dk28 and used the .exe from the samsung site and went straight to eb13 and my phone runs wonderfully. The odin method is a waste of time honestly. No point in flashing back to di18 then eb14. Just use the samsung file. It does everything for you.

well everyone said you needed the di18 modem so i just wanted to make sure it was flawless and no issues. and thats what i got flawless so waste of time not at all considering how many people are having issues with the way that you upgraded. it took 23 seconds for me to flash through odin

Voodoo Advice

Voodoo bricked my phone twice. Fortunately I was able to fix it with Odin both times.
The first time I flashed a ROM and forgot to disable Voodoo. I was able to fix it in 15 minutes. Then last nite I was applying RYANZA's Voodoo and it fried my phone. I thought for sure I killed my Vibrant and after many ODIN attempts trying different approaches (including Eugene's Froyo that doesnt brick--which didnt work for me) I was able to resuscitate. I have the larger NAND chip.
For the noobs out there be very careful with Voodoo. Only use it if you are comfortable with ODIN and know what you're doing.
Also be very careful with RYANZA's Voodoo.
This is the Screenshot of RYANZA VOODOO!! Yes he has Voodoo (EXT4)

Voodoo is not made by RYANZA! There are other people capable of writing lagfixes you know! Voodoo is made by Supercurio. His website is here: http://project-voodoo.org/ in case you didn't know. He allows anyone to freely use his software until they make themselves into a liability. <---This means YOU!

Yes. This is what I was hinting at. If you cannot tell the difference between the LagFixes you are doing, you don't need to be doing them.
VooDoo concerts /data to EXT4 and needs to be removed before you flash any new rom.
Ryan's OCLF creates a virtual EXT2 partition and it is safe to be flashed over and even backup.

Vibrant is not hack friendly. Alot of problems come from user error but hardware locks is horrible. This was the first phone I have ever bricked before. I started with smartphones with the Tmobile htc mda. I have every smartphone since that hit the market and I have never been so afraid to touch anything until I started with the Vibrant. And I have done some stupid things with my previous phones.
I understand the OP but I wouldnt put blame on the developers of the hacks/tweak etc and not all the blame on the user. Since joining forums like XDA I have never seen the term bricked used so much.

Your are right about the brick term. Its funny how people have short memories. I remember when the JI6 OTA came out recently and tons of people said they bricked their phones and it was because they forgot to disable Voodoo before applying OTA.
I like the z4mod much netter than voodoo. You have to be careful with that one as well.
Friends don't let friends flash drunk...
if you think that is what brick means, just curious. What do you call it when your phone is permanently inoperable?

[GUIDE] Flash Darkyy's ROM on your Vibrant - INCLUDES PROBLEMS

DARKYY'S ROM FOR SGS VIBRANT
Darky made his ROM flashable for ALL SGS series.
Don't just flash this like ANY OTHER ROM.
*WARNING IF YOU DON'T READ THIS WHOLE THREAD YOU WILL SOFT/HARD BRICK*
FIRSTLY, download this: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.darkyrom.darkyconfig
It's called the "DARKYROM CONFIGURATOR" its in the market.
In the App, make sure that these are the settings,
The Modem and Kernel, set them both to NO MODEM, and , SKIP KERNEL
Now download the ROM, and put it in your SD Card.
Go back into Darkyrom config. App.
Now click menu, then SELECT ZIP AND FLASH
It will ask for SuperUser allow it.
It will now boot into Recovery and start Flashing it, it will take a while its a 250MB file.
After flashing is done, it will take a longer-than-usual time to reboot.
It will open.
If you see your PREVIOUS ROM WALLPAPER, SETTINGS ETC...
boot into recovery by using power button, and wipe/factory reset.
Now it should be okay..
-NOTE-
you do NOT have to disable voodoo, well, i didn't and i'm having no problems because of that.
*PROBLEMS*
It Sometimes Randomly reboots, but gives a vibrate as a warning?
It randomly vibrates sometimes... but doesn't always reboot.
Some people may experience all the SD Card Wiped or their music/gallery/etc erased
I will upload some pictures in the second post, through the phone it self.

Wiping solves some problems ull face. Trust me.
Nice of you to start a topic.
The RESTART/Vibrate bug you are refering to is the SAME bug that Jellette/Heathen was experiencing when he was trying to port an i9000 ROM in Ragnarok. He tracked the issue to be caused by the signal. Yes, the SIGNAL strength of the network causes the reboot. It happens when this signal reaches a certain value. Then phone goes crazy and reboots. That's about it. There is still no known solutions to this.
HOWEVER, Eugene beleives he found the file and settings which are causing it. I have PMed Darkyy and he will be looking into the issue when he's back from vacation (currently hes heading out for a few days). I believe jellette/Heathen may also be working on the issue once he gets his replacement phone.
I hope this helps. And yes. Darkyy' ROM is FAMOUS. I don't need to say more about it haha. When/if it works, it will be AMAZING.
If other devs want to jump on this to try and fix it, it would be very very appreciated. This ROM is just too good to pass up
Not to mention, ALL themes from the I9000 forums WILL work with this after it is working on our Vibrants. Go take a look at the I9000 forum, there are literally TENS upon TENS of amazing themes for it.
For the email FCs, it was enough to wipe its data in TitaniumBackup. however, I had issues receiving calls till I wiped/factory reset my phone. Very satisfied so far.

how long is the longer than usual? i tried it last night and i guess it got stuck on a bootloop and kept vibrating too in the bootanimation "darky's rom" for about half and hour
I tried 9.2 extreme edition when it first came out. Super fast, I really liked the presentation, pulled out all the stops with animations and transparent elements sprinkled around. Couldn't get over the nagging bugs though, like the capacitive buttons being mapped all wack, didn't have an effective home button, both home and back functioned like the back button. Also the volume was reversed, and I didn't have sound in certain apps. Also had to flash a US modem, you should mention that in your post, I know it say's choose no modem, but you should mention later to flash one that works.
Used it for a few days like that actually, because it was still super slick and useable...even without the home button lol. But I didn't see it randomly reboot even once.

How exactly can one mess up the update USING SAMSUNG'S OWN TOOL?
I'm sitting here trying to find threads on ODIN'ing an Epic back to stock so I can install a custom rom on it (fixing somebody else's phone).
This phone was fine before the update, they ran the OTA, and now it's practically unusable. Gallery broken, Settings force closes, etc etc etc the list goes on and on.
While it may not have problems for everyone there is no doubt that some users of the OTA update are having major problems.
These people paid Sprint and Samsung for the device so they have every right to complain if they want to.
Just sayin most people having issues used that tool. I have none of those reported issues so either the person messed it up the tool messed it up or they just got a bad phone. But froyo is perfect if INSTALLED USING ODIN.

I flashed mine using the Samsung tool and official download and my gps is intermittent. So go screw your self with your flawed information. People like you are such idiots claiming to know everything and infact you do not really know anything.

I installed the update via the Sprint Tool and have had NO issues. I love it! I was running Bonsai before and enjoyed that but was having slight issues with things because of the DK28 modem. Since I've updated those problems have disappeared and I'm very pleased with my phone.
Only thing I did was Odin'd back to stock and then did the update so I had a clean install. I didn't care that I lost my apps, they were easy enough to reinstall with the new online Android Market. All the apps that I had loaded were on the list and I pushed them to the phone from the internet. Was up and running in less than a half hour.
Not to throw fuel to the fire.
I ext4'd with CW3 to EB13 and have not run into a single bug either. However, I wiped all caches and factory reset starting new. I used Samsungs Odin tool, but had to flash a different kernel to support Ext4. I also removed all Sprint Bloatware.
So far I cannot replicate and bugs that are in the "Organizing a list of bugs" thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965906.

Honestly, that's great for you. I'm not experiencing a lot of what people are experiencing but that doesn't mean they DON'T EXIST.
That's like saying there are no homeless people in the United States. Just because you live in a wealthy neighborhood doesn't mean there aren't homeless people out there...
I waited for the OTA and got it this morning. I'm not having checker board issue, no fcs, no battery drain, and no other issues. It's looking better then dk28 for me as well.
Sent from my Shoe.... I mean my Samsung Epic
updated ota and so far no issues except my own ignorance.
There are definitely bugs in this release. I've been able to recreate many of them, and some of the devs here have also seen them. Many of them carried over from the beta builds. The method you use to update means nothing, as long as you follow instructions. Odin and the Samsung updater are the same thing. One is just more user friendly. They both flash the same tar file.
The camera lag is def there no mtter how many times u factor rest , wip data/cache , or what mehtod u use to install. They changed it and now its crappier. That is all.
Checkerboarding is happening in the browser for sure. Pinch-to-zoom and see what happens.

I would have agreed with you before this update...but I believe there is a difference between the Samsung tool and Odin. The S tool fail for me on multuple occasions, freezing at a Cyan, grey or magenta screen on my phone. It only worked after I tried using Odin (pheww..was really worried b4 Odin saved the day).
Here's what worked for at least 2 coworkers and myself who had a lot of the problems listed as bugs. It may be overkill but has worked everytime so far.
1. Backup sd
2. Format sd
3. Odin back to stock D18
4. Boot phone one time and shutdown.
5. Odin to EB13
6. Enjoy a fully functional scoop of Froyo
Only in one case (mine) did someone have to apply the Gsensor lag fix (yamaha calibutil). But other than that no issues with gps, browser, tws or gallery.
Hope this helps someone.
i have to agree with the OP. flashed with via Samsung's tool the night before the ota, and its been perfect. slight checkerboarding in the browser but went to dolphin hd and it rocks now. Not seeing any of the other issues.
A lot of the people who have issues use software like Titanium backup or flash kernels or restore a nandroid backup and then wonder why they are seeing so many bugs. The only way to claim that there are bugs are to use the samsung tool to flash the rom and then WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING ELSE, repeat the bug.
There ARE bugs in this ROM like the checkerboarding, but a majority of the bugs being reported are people who messed up their own install.

Sprint Reps say DON'T update to 2.2! lol

So I went to the sprint store today cuz my battery took a ****. The repair guy was telling everyone not to run the OTA update to 2.2, apparently it's bricking phones and breaking camera. He said Sprint will have their own update in a couple weeks. I lol'd as I walked out with my deodexed rooted EB13...

i can believe it, it was a ***** for me to update my phone using odin and the eb13 tar, it just would not work, my phones screen kept turning a different color like purple or green then odin would just freeze. Tried another computer and was able to do it using the samsung .exe file and it wiped everything and i thought i was good, running real quick and snappy, but i opened the camera and went to record a video with it and as soon as i hit the button to switch to video i got an error saying the camera has crashed and it kicked me out :/ I thought, according to sprint, that we waited this long so they could iron out the bugs and make sure there was a release that was worth of releasing!
This official release is flawless for me. I did get the orange screen thou with the samsung tool, I just reran it and its 100 % flawless. Recorded vids with no issue.
could this be the EVO curse we were dreading?
Btw. Everyone owes a oppology to noobl. Remember he warned us about the leak dk28 bricking some phones? And some in here claimed the epic is unbrickable? Uhhuuu... Everyone... Form a single line and appologize.
I don't know how to prove that the phone was bricked, but it definitely was. It got stuck at param.lfs (or whatever that file extension is) in odin, so I retried it a few times, next thing I knew it would not turn on. He should be swapping it at the sprint store tommorow I think.

I was on DK28 and since I followed instructions correctly, my phone is still in working condition. HA!
That's misinformation from the store. Here's the deal with the update... Yes, it's still being pushed and all devices should have it by Friday. There have been some reports of issues with the camera and browser force closing but those are resolvable in most cases with a hard reset (sucks I know). I haven't seen any reports of a phone that was truly bricked, although custom roms will be more likely to have issues with the OTA update. I've personally updated 8 of these both OTA and with the Samsung installer and haven't had an issue with any of them after the update.
Currently looking for a custom rom though because I don't like some of the changes that were made. It does feel like the screen is a bit laggy after the update and I hate the new messaging app but overall no performance issues

lol. Me too. I used the 200mb samsung tool. No old odin with modified eb13 deodexed junk. Follow instructions nerds!
I'm not buying it. I know there are isues out there (myself included) but I would think if it was a serious problem we would have people on the forums saying it happened to them by now.
I updated my phone via the Samsung .exe file which I knew would wipe my phone which wasn't a problem for me since I use gmail to keep records of my contacts, call logs / sms (using sms backp+) and etc. So no worries there. I did get a little miffed about losing the apps but that is expected for a phone wipe.
There are few quirks and some changes in the GUI I didn't like. Big issue is the stupid SMS client they had to change so will be looking for a altnative version for it. No big deal but why change something when it works in DI18??
Screen rotation lag is fixable via screen calibration (posted elsewhere in this forums).
Least now the Devs have the source code they should be coming out with some nice ROMs soon. Rumored for Sprint to come out with an update in a couple of weeks? Not worried about it, by then most of us will be on custom ROMs anyway.

flashing kills the balls out of the battery. i have had a fully charged battery die in half an hour running odin multiple times trying things out. id bet almost anything that if you had an external charger to throw your battery in for a bit the phone would boot in to download mode with no problems.

EB13 Froyo - is that it for now?

I am just wondering if a newer official ROM looks like it might be released in March to address some of peoples' issues, or if I should just continue my research and preparation to flash what I assume is still available OTW although not OTA. Only thing really holding me back is the prep and the desire to hopefully not do anything riskier than necessary if something else is around the corner (I would do a total Samsung tool flash, by the way to hopefully start clean).
I can't speak for others, but flashing, and Odin, and roms and kernels use to scare the hell out of me. With that said, I used Odin and flashed a clean froyo, did the camera lag kernel fix and my phone is EXCELLENT now. Not a single thing wrong with it. Its fast, the GPS works, and now, I feel comfortable with ODIN.
Before, I was terrified to even start up odin, scared to even put my phone in download mode. Now, I've flashed to Froyo, messed that up, flashed back to Eclair, then flashed to Froyo again, and not a single hiccup along the way. For me, Froyo is worlds better than Eclair.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Unfortunately the relationship of my Epic to my computer is like a woman's freaking menstrual cycle. I don't even know how I managed to root months ago and clockworkmod never even ended up on there and I have no idea why. So I have to really read, read read this place and do things very methodically before taking the leap. I just saw that there is supposedly yet another Froyo build on Sprint's site today but waiting for another may be pointless right now or close to it.
my last phone was a g1. i thought it was easy to load a custom rom on there, but the process for the epic is downright fool-proof.
you probably didn't get permanent root back on di18, but now they have a pre-rooted eb13 rom you can load through recovery after updating and using the same one click 2.5.5 method. nothing to fear!

I rooted, and am very grateful for the many benefits of it. However this involves much more than rooting--it involves data backup and restore, flashing, etc. so even if it's easier on Android phones than say that old ugly Windows Mobile, it still requires some skill and smarts. XDA is a heck of a tech crew though!
It appears to me that those who wiped everything and started fresh don't have problems. Those that tried to preserve their things are having issues.

What we have been trying to say is that ODIN or Heimdall is the way to go for changing OS's around. You can always get your contact data back through the OS. Your call data and SMS data is easy to get back with Backup to Gmail. Your programs are easily restored with Titanium Backup ($ version) or MyBackup Pro (just don't restore any system data).

Can you please precisely define "system data" and why it shouldn't be restored? I use MyBackup Root and they claim that everything it backs up can be restored pretty much trouble free, even across different ROMs. I'd also like to use CWM and Nandroid (so all eggs aren't in one basket) but have to manage to get the things working first.

"amen to that BROTHA!" lol
ehh things can be tricky at timkes, but they always seem to work out. unless you have a problem like this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvosH8UZrWw
a system app is anything that you didnt install yourself. its all the apps in /system/app folder. if you download something from the market it gets saved to /data/app. hope that helps. btw is eb13 considered our official froyo? did they finish pushing it ota?
So, maybe some of us are just tired of the burnout from waiting for the now-"discontinued" Froyo. But is there any word on a possible "ECxx"? I'm almost afraid to ask, heheh.
@dog316
I agree froyo is great but im just woundering if your browser dosnt get the checker box when your trying to pinch to zoom. That's the only problem I have with it, but I think it kinda a big problem

Well I am glad that I am not the only one to run across that problem. I thought that was an 'upgrade'. I am looking at several different browsers right now as most of the time I can't read the tiny type.

Yeah that's the only/biggest problem I have
And well have you tried dolphin brower?

Yes - that is the one I like the best right now

The only time it did not work for me was a asus p4c800-e dx mobo's front usb ports
