How exactly can one mess up the update USING SAMSUNG'S OWN TOOL?
I'm sitting here trying to find threads on ODIN'ing an Epic back to stock so I can install a custom rom on it (fixing somebody else's phone).
This phone was fine before the update, they ran the OTA, and now it's practically unusable. Gallery broken, Settings force closes, etc etc etc the list goes on and on.
While it may not have problems for everyone there is no doubt that some users of the OTA update are having major problems.
These people paid Sprint and Samsung for the device so they have every right to complain if they want to.
Just sayin most people having issues used that tool. I have none of those reported issues so either the person messed it up the tool messed it up or they just got a bad phone. But froyo is perfect if INSTALLED USING ODIN.

I flashed mine using the Samsung tool and official download and my gps is intermittent. So go screw your self with your flawed information. People like you are such idiots claiming to know everything and infact you do not really know anything.

I installed the update via the Sprint Tool and have had NO issues. I love it! I was running Bonsai before and enjoyed that but was having slight issues with things because of the DK28 modem. Since I've updated those problems have disappeared and I'm very pleased with my phone.
Only thing I did was Odin'd back to stock and then did the update so I had a clean install. I didn't care that I lost my apps, they were easy enough to reinstall with the new online Android Market. All the apps that I had loaded were on the list and I pushed them to the phone from the internet. Was up and running in less than a half hour.
Not to throw fuel to the fire.
I ext4'd with CW3 to EB13 and have not run into a single bug either. However, I wiped all caches and factory reset starting new. I used Samsungs Odin tool, but had to flash a different kernel to support Ext4. I also removed all Sprint Bloatware.
So far I cannot replicate and bugs that are in the "Organizing a list of bugs" thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965906.

Honestly, that's great for you. I'm not experiencing a lot of what people are experiencing but that doesn't mean they DON'T EXIST.
That's like saying there are no homeless people in the United States. Just because you live in a wealthy neighborhood doesn't mean there aren't homeless people out there...
I waited for the OTA and got it this morning. I'm not having checker board issue, no fcs, no battery drain, and no other issues. It's looking better then dk28 for me as well.

updated ota and so far no issues except my own ignorance.
There are definitely bugs in this release. I've been able to recreate many of them, and some of the devs here have also seen them. Many of them carried over from the beta builds. The method you use to update means nothing, as long as you follow instructions. Odin and the Samsung updater are the same thing. One is just more user friendly. They both flash the same tar file.
The camera lag is def there no mtter how many times u factor rest , wip data/cache , or what mehtod u use to install. They changed it and now its crappier. That is all.
Checkerboarding is happening in the browser for sure. Pinch-to-zoom and see what happens.

I would have agreed with you before this update...but I believe there is a difference between the Samsung tool and Odin. The S tool fail for me on multuple occasions, freezing at a Cyan, grey or magenta screen on my phone. It only worked after I tried using Odin (pheww..was really worried b4 Odin saved the day).
Here's what worked for at least 2 coworkers and myself who had a lot of the problems listed as bugs. It may be overkill but has worked everytime so far.
1. Backup sd
2. Format sd
3. Odin back to stock D18
4. Boot phone one time and shutdown.
5. Odin to EB13
6. Enjoy a fully functional scoop of Froyo
Only in one case (mine) did someone have to apply the Gsensor lag fix (yamaha calibutil). But other than that no issues with gps, browser, tws or gallery.
Hope this helps someone.
i have to agree with the OP. flashed with via Samsung's tool the night before the ota, and its been perfect. slight checkerboarding in the browser but went to dolphin hd and it rocks now. Not seeing any of the other issues.
A lot of the people who have issues use software like Titanium backup or flash kernels or restore a nandroid backup and then wonder why they are seeing so many bugs. The only way to claim that there are bugs are to use the samsung tool to flash the rom and then WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING ELSE, repeat the bug.
There ARE bugs in this ROM like the checkerboarding, but a majority of the bugs being reported are people who messed up their own install.

I've had DK28 installed or over a month now and used various different roms, but about two weeks ago, data ( and consequently voice and messaging) all dropped and refused to work. I've heard of several other people having this problem as well, but am surprised that more people haven't experienced this. Once data drops, rebooting, reflashing, and re-odining all refuse to restore service reliably. My only solution I've found is to re-odin to DI18. It's quite a step back however, I'm curious if people have found ways around this or it only affects certain phones..
two words, truly epic
Never had what you are talking about. I was on bonsai rom and now I'm on a new test build rom and I don't have that problem. Try bonsai rom its awesome.
Sent from my Evo Killer!!!
Did you Odin to DI18 between each DK28 flash??? Just sayin, if you loaded DK28 once, and just switched roms, even wiping etc.... that could be a problem. Sorry if you did, but just checking, you didn't type out your whole process... if you do, someone may see the common denominator, etc.... 2.2 works fine for me, other than a couple minor bugs that have been traced to kernel issues... so hopefully source will fix them.
Actually, tried Bonsai rom too, but problem persisted. I'm pretty sure it's a modem issue. You can tell it's happening, because you can see that there will be a certain amount of signal (2 bars, 4 bars, 5 bars) but no data service (indicator is also missing). Calls fail to connect, messages fail to send, and of course, data is non-existent.
I've never had a problem with DK28 and I strongly suspect that if you have, it's due to a PEBCAK error.
It's not a PEBCAK error. It's been experienced and documented by several other users:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922428&highlight=dk28+modem+zip
I've tried about a dozen different things, but the lowest common denominator is that I've wiped my phone and used odin to restore to the stock DK28 leak to no avail. A consensus seems to form that my phone may just be moody. I've already begun steps to exchange it, although I'm far past the 30 day window...
Have you tried flashing back to the stock modem and rom, then reflashing to DK28? Instead of just flashing the DK28 modem again.
Bye bye as this is a troll thread...

I had similar glitches with DK28, but they were usually resolved by rebooting the phone or turning data off/on. The last straw for me was when my daughter tried contacting me for and emergency. She was unable to get a hold of me because my phone and data had literally stopped working without warning. After rebooting the phone, I had nearly 20 voice mail messages from her and others throughout the day. The next day I want back to 2.1.
Since, I have replaced the Epic with an EVO. The epic is still in my desk drawer waiting for the day Samsung gets their heads out of their asses and update it.

DK28 is fine
I'm a Vibrant owner who has been setting up my gf's Samsung Epic. Immediately rooted that beast and put TrulyEpic on it. That ROM was killing her battery life in less than half a day so I switched her to the Bansai ROM and it's the same deal. Is this standard for Epic users?

No ****? All right, thanks man.
People think that since this problem hasn't occurred for them it must not exist. It's obviously an issue for some of us. As for remedies, I've tried, cycling data, airplane mode. All no good. The funny part is it'll pop - and work for a few hours- then go back to being an expensive mp3 player. I've even odin-ed to DI18, problem still persists. Take the phone back, give sprint hell. And while you're giving them hell, ask them where the hell our Froyo update is.
Dk28 is very buggy. Load a custom rom over it like nebula, bonsai, or truly epic. They fix almost all of the bugs and they are faster than stock
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If this happens on DI18 as well, obviously its hardware... back to sprint... hopefully youre investing in TEP. If it is just DK28, try that GPS fix, may sound like not related, but it is just doing it the meticulous long way, which in the long run works great. I have never had a real data issue, but GPS I never got better than 10 meters or whatever, did that method, locked in 3 secs to 2 meters... crazy. I think not all the pit, modem, etc files are created equal... you may lose something in DL from some crappy free file hosting site, your flash may miss one little thing because the Samsung Drivers are crap... Theres so many variables. But the majority of people don't have any of these issues... so either you have software issues, and need to go back to stock, then it works fine... or if not, Do a tried and true method to get to DK28, and then see if it happens again. Data dropping could be so many things... location, how settings are tweaked... did you try the 'want better 4g signal' thread? It also links to a 3g fix that I think was also found to help on the EVO... just sayin... theres fixes out there, this is a totally unfinished build, what the devs have done with it is amazing.
That said, unless you want to be designated tech guy, keep her on stock. Unless she absolutely needs Flash, or wants to have 500 apps on her phone... she will probably not miss out on much, its power users and those who bought docks and HDMI cables that are really getting the shaft.
If you have any issue with froyo what so ever I would HIGHLY RECOMEND you use the guide to upgrade to eb13 in the dev section and odin eb13. This was my first time using odin. Which I had to go from dk28 ext4 to eclair and then to eb13. It was very easy and it runs sooooo awesome. No lag or any issue what so ever.
Epic 4g
Also it seems like most of the issues that some of you are having is because there is a few different methods to upgrade to froyo. Those methods may not wipe cache and data like it should, odin wipes everything. The odin method is the cleanest and the safest method. And you are gauranteed a bad ass phone afterwards.
Epic 4g
I am no expert in these matters, but I believe that using the ODIN process to go to DI18 then to EB13 is a waste. I think the .exe file on the Samsung website completely obliterates all of your phone data (not SD card data), and loads the new OS. I went from DK28 to EB13. I lost root and ALL of my in phone data. That is part of a complete device wipe.
My phone is running really well so far.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I KNEW it would be a full wipe, and had my stuff backed up. I was just trying to explain why I think ODIN to DI18 is useless compared to .exe on Samsung site.
For the record I am already rerooted and have selective things restored.
I'm currently running MeatROM v106.1 with eb13 overclocked kernel with ext4 by rodderick and the eb13 modem. My phone is so wicked fast and surprisingly smooth. Idk if I want to change my ROM when new ones come out for fear that it will dissappoint. I was sitting in my living room and tried google maps after replacing my modem. It got within 1 meter in about 5 seconds. My phone is 100% perfect right now.

So I went to the sprint store today cuz my battery took a ****. The repair guy was telling everyone not to run the OTA update to 2.2, apparently it's bricking phones and breaking camera. Loving the official 2.2. 12hrs unplugged so far and 60% battery left. Usually my exchange email kills it during the day since the tower is overloaded downtown with awesome 20-60 kilobit speeds. So my 3g radio gets a work out constantly trying to communicate.

I'm skeptical that they are still rolling it out in force... My mom and sister have yet to get it. I'm just sitting on dk28 for a bot myself so I'm not sure how eb13 is actually performing... The forum posts don't make me particularly optimistic
i can believe it, it was a ***** for me to update my phone using odin and the eb13 tar, it just would not work, my phones screen kept turning a different color like purple or green then odin would just freeze. Tried another computer and was able to do it using the samsung .exe file and it wiped everything and i thought i was good, running real quick and snappy, but i opened the camera and went to record a video with it and as soon as i hit the button to switch to video i got an error saying the camera has crashed and it kicked me out :/ I thought, according to sprint, that we waited this long so they could iron out the bugs and make sure there was a release that was worth of releasing!
This official release is flawless for me. I did get the orange screen thou with the samsung tool, I just reran it and its 100 % flawless. Recorded vids with no issue.

Btw. Everyone owes a oppology to noobl. Remember he warned us about the leak dk28 bricking some phones? And some in here claimed the epic is unbrickable? Uhhuuu... Everyone... Form a single line and appologize.
I don't know how to prove that the phone was bricked, but it definitely was. It got stuck at param.lfs (or whatever that file extension is) in odin, so I retried it a few times, next thing I knew it would not turn on. He should be swapping it at the sprint store tommorow I think.

I was on DK28 and since I followed instructions correctly, my phone is still in working condition. HA!
That's misinformation from the store. Here's the deal with the update... Yes, it's still being pushed and all devices should have it by Friday. There have been some reports of issues with the camera and browser force closing but those are resolvable in most cases with a hard reset (sucks I know). I haven't seen any reports of a phone that was truly bricked, although custom roms will be more likely to have issues with the OTA update. I've personally updated 8 of these both OTA and with the Samsung installer and haven't had an issue with any of them after the update.
Currently looking for a custom rom though because I don't like some of the changes that were made. It does feel like the screen is a bit laggy after the update and I hate the new messaging app but overall no performance issues

lol. Me too. I used the 200mb samsung tool. No old odin with modified eb13 deodexed junk. Follow instructions nerds!
I'm not buying it. I know there are isues out there (myself included) but I would think if it was a serious problem we would have people on the forums saying it happened to them by now.
I updated my phone via the Samsung .exe file which I knew would wipe my phone which wasn't a problem for me since I use gmail to keep records of my contacts, call logs / sms (using sms backp+) and etc. So no worries there. I did get a little miffed about losing the apps but that is expected for a phone wipe.
There are few quirks and some changes in the GUI I didn't like. Big issue is the stupid SMS client they had to change so will be looking for a altnative version for it. No big deal but why change something when it works in DI18??
Screen rotation lag is fixable via screen calibration (posted elsewhere in this forums).
Least now the Devs have the source code they should be coming out with some nice ROMs soon. Rumored for Sprint to come out with an update in a couple of weeks? Not worried about it, by then most of us will be on custom ROMs anyway.

flashing kills the balls out of the battery. i have had a fully charged battery die in half an hour running odin multiple times trying things out. id bet almost anything that if you had an external charger to throw your battery in for a bit the phone would boot in to download mode with no problems.
I am just wondering if a newer official ROM looks like it might be released in March to address some of peoples' issues, or if I should just continue my research and preparation to flash what I assume is still available OTW although not OTA. Only thing really holding me back is the prep and the desire to hopefully not do anything riskier than necessary if something else is around the corner (I would do a total Samsung tool flash, by the way to hopefully start clean).
I can't speak for others, but flashing, and Odin, and roms and kernels use to scare the hell out of me. With that said, I used Odin and flashed a clean froyo, did the camera lag kernel fix and my phone is EXCELLENT now. Not a single thing wrong with it. Its fast, the GPS works, and now, I feel comfortable with ODIN.
Before, I was terrified to even start up odin, scared to even put my phone in download mode. Now, I've flashed to Froyo, messed that up, flashed back to Eclair, then flashed to Froyo again, and not a single hiccup along the way. For me, Froyo is worlds better than Eclair.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Unfortunately the relationship of my Epic to my computer is like a woman's freaking menstrual cycle. I don't even know how I managed to root months ago and clockworkmod never even ended up on there and I have no idea why. So I have to really read, read read this place and do things very methodically before taking the leap. I just saw that there is supposedly yet another Froyo build on Sprint's site today but waiting for another may be pointless right now or close to it.
my last phone was a g1. i thought it was easy to load a custom rom on there, but the process for the epic is downright fool-proof.
you probably didn't get permanent root back on di18, but now they have a pre-rooted eb13 rom you can load through recovery after updating and using the same one click 2.5.5 method. nothing to fear!

I rooted, and am very grateful for the many benefits of it. However this involves much more than rooting--it involves data backup and restore, flashing, etc. so even if it's easier on Android phones than say that old ugly Windows Mobile, it still requires some skill and smarts. XDA is a heck of a tech crew though!
It appears to me that those who wiped everything and started fresh don't have problems. Those that tried to preserve their things are having issues.

What we have been trying to say is that ODIN or Heimdall is the way to go for changing OS's around. You can always get your contact data back through the OS. Your call data and SMS data is easy to get back with Backup to Gmail. Your programs are easily restored with Titanium Backup ($ version) or MyBackup Pro (just don't restore any system data).

I use MyBackup Root and they claim that everything it backs up can be restored pretty much trouble free, even across different ROMs. I'd also like to use CWM and Nandroid (so all eggs aren't in one basket) but have to manage to get the things working first.

"amen to that BROTHA!" lol
ehh things can be tricky at timkes, but they always seem to work out. unless you have a problem like this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvosH8UZrWw
a system app is anything that you didnt install yourself. its all the apps in /system/app folder. if you download something from the market it gets saved to /data/app. hope that helps. btw is eb13 considered our official froyo? did they finish pushing it ota?
So, maybe some of us are just tired of the burnout from waiting for the now-"discontinued" Froyo. But is there any word on a possible "ECxx"? I'm almost afraid to ask, heheh.
@dog316
I agree froyo is great but im just woundering if your browser dosnt get the checker box when your trying to pinch to zoom. That's the only problem I have with it, but I think it kinda a big problem

Well I am glad that I am not the only one to run across that problem. I thought that was an 'upgrade'. I am looking at several different browsers right now as most of the time I can't read the tiny type.

Yeah that's the only/biggest problem I have
And well have you tried dolphin brower?

Yes - that is the one I like the best right now

The only time it did not work for me was a asus p4c800-e dx mobo's front usb ports

Headache after headache after headache since I got the Froyo OTA.
Lots of freezes causing me to pull the battery several times a day. Also the battery power drains so quick I can't even come up with a comparison. Then don't get me started the 3G going down all the time...this is f***ing ridiculous. I did root it but I have seen no change. I have even disabled the bloatware...anyone have any suggestions for me.
Much thanks in advance,
Doc
You can try odining back to DL09 or whatever, re-update OTA, and see if the problem happens again...
If not, I would just leave it stock and return it to verizon with the 1 year warranty
Ive had the same issue! I rerooted and flashed evil fascination and I am not having hardly any problems. Ive had a few forcecloses but nothing like what came with stock froyo
My girlfriend is having the same issue after i MADE her update to the OTA 2.2. Text messages dont get sent and it is very laggy. The whole phone is too slow to use so i plan on flashing a custom rom or going back to 2.1 with odin. What roms are pretty similar to stock that maintain that whole touchwiz feel?

Did you perform a factory reset? That seemed to fix a few problems.
For starters, this is common. The stock Froyo update screwed a lot of people up. Next, simply rooting it doesn't *FIX* anything, all it does is give you the ability to run Apps as Administrator, giving you more power/control. So, you rooted it, that wasn't going to fix your issues. Flash a custom ROM. I personally recommend the Community ROM. If after flashing a different ROM, after wiping Cache, Dalvik Cache, and user data, etc. you still encounter the same issues, then yes, I'd exchange it.

Common? Really?
About the same time as the ota froyo was released, verizon had a bunch of 3g & 4g data issues on their network (perhaps it was shortly thereafter).
Otherwise, I see as many posts about the surprisingly good performance of the current stock rom as I see reports of issues.
No offence to the op, but we have no idea how these rooted phones have been messed with before the complaints are conveyed...
So I agree with the suggestion to odin back to a stock pit/modem/kernel/rom and let the ota process repeat from a clean start. From that result, flash a solid voodoo kernel, enable lag fix, pick your favorite rom, etc...

I am currently running the ota 2.2 froyo update...only thing I have done is root and debloat and the phone is very fast! Only issue I have is google voice search force closes.
I think the update is fast... but despite what rom I use there is still intermittent gps issues, voice and data issues even on the first warranty replacement. Dropped calls in solids 4 bar territory on stock or dev roms and 3g fading un and out even after the dmu fix. All issues never had before the update.
Waiting on a call to see if I can get a better replacement option. No interest in Palm, BB or the Dinc Droid Pro or DX they want me to take as a replacement.
Out of the DInc2 Charge and TBolt which is the best options in my fellow forum friends minds. Have my own looking for outside opinions to consider depending on the options I am offered.

My GF is having OTA 2.2 pains also...signal issues may be due to network, but also noticed lag, camera issues (black screen and force closure when camera opened)...text not received...probably will root and flash custom ROM...if she lets me..LOL....

Download the app "gps booster". Seem to fix my gps issue... locks in quick and within 10ft. As far as the signal issue, I had the same thing until I replaced the stock battery cover. have yet to drop any calls and my 3g is alot better now! I am absolutely impressed with this phone since doing these little "tweaks"! O and I vote droid charge if your dead set on a replacement! Seems to have better battery and display over the other two.

I stated nothing about the the OP's 3G outtage, any of us who are techy-like at all or who pay attention know what that was about. I was referring to their other issues. And I agree, MANY people have great performance after updating to stock 2.2, while many others are also getting screwed up. It's just one of those things. The OP wasn't one of the lucky, so, either Odin back and try the update again, or go custom ROM.
Well I have a couple DInc2s coming next week.
Really have to send the love to all the Devs who have made the Fascinate fascinating. Just can't wait on Sammy and VZW to get the tools in the hands of the devs to make the most of these phones.
Almost went TBolt but don't want to extend the contract until there are more 4g phones out there.
Wife is excited about FFC so happy wife will be good for me
Would have preferred to stick with the Fascinate but a couple replacements later and even the great roms and kernels couldn't get it to where it should be. Here's hoping that good source drips for everyone soon.
So for free and no contract extension I'll check out HTC...

I did OTA Froyo update on a stock fascinate and my battery also began draining rapidly, about 8-10 hour life in standby I finally figured out that it was the built in facebook sync that was doing it, I had earlier turned off all syncing then noticed fb synced new events to my calendar after that so I completely removed my fb account and now its back to the ~2days of battery life with light use I had with 2.1. Not sure if this is what everyone else is experiencing with battery life problems but its worth a shot. I haven't tried putting my fb account back up to see if it happens again, I'm going to wait until I get around to rooting to do that.
I swear I had these issues with 3g data out completely. This fixed it in 3 minutes. ESN Swap to repartition data. No BS need for another phone.
http://totalhack.ws/esnswap.html
Hope this helps.
Well... Been using the DInc2 for over a day now... Short time but very evident that there is a major issue post update on the Fascinate. Right back to the great download and upload speeds I had pre ed01. No ATT like dropped calls, etc.
Without voodoo quadrant scores on stock in the 1400 - 1600 range consistently.
Just a huge thanks to all our awesome Fascinate developersfor making it a great phone while I had it.
Hope the DInc2 developers are as committed and talented as this team. Right now they are working on getting perma root....
