I have the EVO that was given out at the Google I/O so it is my first time with Sprint. It is one hell of a device.
I ran some speed tests all over the SF Bay Area and the EVDO speeds are total crap. Can't really call it 3G.
I get between 250Kbps - 700Kbps where the upper end is RARELY achieved . 90% of the time i see 300Kbps...
Are these typical Sprint speeds on 3G? or is there something wrong with radio on the EVO? (I am not sure if the firmware that is currently on the device will be the shipping firmware as some things are missing like the QIK video conf and TV OUT settings/app).
When i get 4G (rarely) the speeds are great (5Mbps down).
Curious what other Sprint customers are seeing on 3g.
San Francisco... specifically in the Outer Mission district... show on average 1700kbps down and 600kbps up.
I only get that 300kbps you're talking about when it is midday and my coverage bars only show one or two. But that's rare.

They really aren't...I don't understand why people think sprint has a crappy 3G network, theirs is very comparable to verizon with speeds, but about halfish the size, maybe a bit more than that. Coverage with sprint is WAY better than at&t and t-mobile, speeds are a bit slower but not enough to cause a heart attack or anything...
check the sig... tether from my house
I get about 1.1Mbps down / 300Kbps up from my Palm Pre around Charlotte. Pretty stable as long as I have at least one bar. The Pre is one of the worst phones I have had for reception though so...
I get 700-1200kbps in good service on 3G. I can't wait to test out 4G.
Here in Boston I get between 1.6mb to 2.1mb constantly.

I dont know SF very well but in t mobiles coverage and speed defense.. on my HD2 i got 4.3Mbps.. i was with my son outside the science museum. perfect 3g coverage.. home in NYC i get upwards of 5mbps. daytime-afternoon goes down to about 3.2Mbps. i came to T mobile from sprint. left sprint when hd2 came out. i must say t mobile is smashing sprint with coverage and speeds for me. with sprint i never got over 2.7Mbps no matter where i went. (i had the touch pro)

If you look at the maps, sprint really does have a much larger 3G network than t-mobile, it all depends on where you are though to be honest. T-mobile is definitely faster though, never said it wasn't, i was specifically talking about SIZE not SPEED.
1000-1500 average in Denver and St. Louis.
Used to be higher last year, but network either slowed or more users. Not quite sure.

T-Mobile sucks in the Bay Area. Can't see more than 1Mbps, not to mention indoor 3G coverage.
1380 down, 670 up
Location is Lower Pac Heights in San Francisco
in Brick NJ, seeing a consistent 2.3-2.5mbps down, 900k up.

This is common in the San Francisco Bay Area - all the way from Pacifica where I work to San Jose. Morgan Hill/Gilroy (deep South Bay) is where Sprint needs to turn up the coverage. The best I've averaged is 600kbps down there.
Tmobile sucks in miami..struggling to get 700kb down..

In Philadelphia I get between 600 and 1200 kbps d/l during peak and offpeak respectively. While I was in Las Vegas last week I could not get better than about 500 kbps d/l so I think 3g can be pretty variable. Good to hear you are getting nice 4G speeds.
Sprint Hero using the FCC speed test app:
Downtown Nashville, TN
2.03 Mbps down
566 kbps up
337 latency
For some reason the speed test app does not work with 2.1 on my hero. Not that I care, because I will have an EVO in my hands very soon!
Speed test comparison does not mean anything
unless you state what browser and what test you used. There can be a huge difference in results from browser to browser and test site to test site. With Skyfire I get 14053 Kbps down and 1816 up. Same test with Opera 3587 down and 890 up. Same test with uZard 14586 kbps down, 12053 kbps up. Using Brighthouse speed test. Huge difference. Opera mini will not run the flash test on Brighthouse.
Anyone on sprint can comment on this?
What's the 3G speed in Southern California (LA and vicinity)?
I am coming from ATT and just wanted to compare the speed!
Orange county I get 700-1300 down about 300-500 up.

Orange county is kind far from LA but don't you think 700-1300 is kind of low compared to ATT? Did you use ATT before?
No, never with AT&T, and I am using a Hero not an Evo.
Thought you would want as much data as possible and didn't see any responses.
So disregard if this doesn't provide you some ballpark.
Its been fast enough that I never use wifi.
Downtown Los Angeles: ~1MB down, ~.4/.5MB up.

No I really appreciated your response. Thanks again. I use my phone more for data than voice. Just wanted to see whether I will lose any speed going from ATT to Sprint.
Anyway, I will have 30 days to decide so I should be good.

From La Mirada/Norwalk (5FWY/605FWY) I get 1.4MB down; .5MB up on my Hero. The EVO will be uncapped 3G as well, no? I've had ATT and T-Mobile, and my connection has always appeared to be faster. In my corporate building, amongst all the other users (ATT, T-Mo, Verizon) and phones (Eris, MyTouch, G1, N1, Pre, BB, etc), I've always had the strongest signal and fastest connection. Might just be the area though.
In westwood area, I get 300 - 400 kbps in the day.. and 1 mbps at night.. not that great

Yeah, that's very poor data speed!
I live in Alhambra, never check the speed, but it seems very fast. I can wathc spb tv, youtube and listen to the radio smoothy.
Sprint's 3g speeds are simply horrible in the entire SF bay area compared to to at&t (i know this is not the region you asked for).
I get 300Kbps - 1Mbps down (mostly 500Kbps) and 500-700Kbps up.
I checked pretty much all across the Bay Area. it is like 3g from the 90s....and might just be a deal breaker for me.
They do however have better coeverage than at&t in most places. not sure why their speed is so slow.
With at&t i get about 2-3Mbps down in most areas tested.
not sure up there but down here in FL sprint 3g is way faster than att 3g or tmo 3g.. i have the HD2 on tmo and a 3gs on att and evo ofcourse on sprint and im not sure if is the phone or the sprint network but evo kick the **** out of the hd2 and att on a test i did using the 3 phones.. evo loaded pages significantly faster than the other 2 carriers . in some sases way faster

Not true, in the last month or so I have consistently been seeing 4+ download and 500k up on my iphone 3gs. So other than uploads, Sprints 4g won't be that much faster than what I am seeing now with AT&T. In the suburbs it is dropping to 1.4+ / 400k.
Do we have to upgrade our phones to a 4g phone if we want hspa+?
I ask, because t-mobile customers seems to have 4g speeds on their n1s.
No, it doesnt have the necessary radio inside it to do hspa +. T-mobile nexus cant do hspa +. You still might see a speed boost though.
I get 5.2mbps on my Nexus One in Canada. This is still 3G.
T-mobile customers have just experienced a placebo effect (or T-Mobile simutaneously updated both HSPA and HSPA+)
That sounds nice... maybe us att users will at least get a speed boost
You will benefit form HSPA+ on a non HSPA+ device because the backend is upgraded as well.
You're limit is your hardware. The radio on the phone can only get up to 7.2, so you'll benefit from HSPA+ all the way to 7.2.
You hit the nail on the head. With T-Mobile in a very strong HSPA+ area and my N1 is getting DL speeds over 6.5MB, my UL speeds are a very solid 1.5MB. I bought the MyTouch 4G and my speeds are on average 9 to 11 MB on DL and the same UL 1.5MB. I still find myself using my N1, with those DL speeds the N1 is a bad ass phone. Nothing feels as good as the N1 in your hand, maybe it's just me.
PS I still want a Tegra powered device, those phones look hot.

I live in a suburb of Boston and have great HSPA+ service. My N1 is getting on average during peak hours 4.2 DL and a constant 1.3 UL. I am very happy with those numbers. T-Mobile has a solid Network and blows away AT&T, Sprint and Verizon in my area. I live only 10 miles out of Boston and one mile away from RT 128. Suppose to be strong areas for all the Carriers.
Thank You T-Mobile.
Confused
If the T-mobile or Att network your using has an average of 7.2mbps or less, wont the Nexus One get the exact same download speed as any HSPA+ phone?
The only time an HSPA+ phone would ever "outpace" the N1 in download speed would be if the network is built up past 7.2mbps right? Like if the average speed was 10mbps THEN the HSPA+ would finally kick in but until 7.2mbps the Nexus One will keep up with any HSPA+ phone right?
I didn't know the G2 was LTE enabled
HSDPA+ is 3G btw.
I don't know, my thoughts were G2: better phone, better performance. LOL (Simpled Minded) Huh? It doesn't make sense to buy a 4G phone then! Forget 4G

LOL at thinking those measly speeds are 4G!
4G speeds are more like 30MB/s down and 15MB/s up.
Look at some of the Verizon LTE (a TRUE 4G network) speed tests.

Well even Verizon's LTE network is still around 7-12 Mbit, not MB/sec... and no where near true "4G."
The ITU's newest standard now allows "evolved 3G technologies" such as HSPA+ to eventually qualify for "4G" nomenclature, but this is still quite some time from now, given that it's roughly 1/10 of the required speed for mobile applications. What's funny, though, is that T-Mobile's HSPA+ is generally faster than Sprint's WiMAX in many areas, despite the fact that under the old classification system WiMAX could eventually become 4G whereas HSPA+ could not.
IMT-Advanced basically became what the old "4G" classification was, including the 100 Mbit mobile and 1 Gbit fixed speed requirements, as well as goodies like VoIP and OFDMA.

yeah pretty much, i thought it was common knowledge for all of us phone geeks. tmobile's 4g is nothing but 3G HSPA. and unless the towers have enough backhaul to support fast speeds, a 3G phone will perform like a 4G phone until the theoretical limits for each are hit. havent seen that happen anywhere yet in the USA that i can tell. its all gimmic marketing crap.

I'm very impressed with t-mobile and give them all the credit in the world for what they've done with their data speeds. ATT is a joke when it comes to being a leader like that. They do nothing but follow the other carriers and react rather than set the standard. But I'm sad t-mobile started this fake 4g thing.
Extremely satisfied with my Nexus One on TMO. I'm roughly 20 miles north west from northeastern Philly and just like the other users have said T-Mobile has the best coverage in my area compared to Verizon and AT&T. My work phone is a Blackberry Tour running on Verizon's network and the network coverage blows compared to T-Mobile's in my area.

The best I ever got with verizon LTE with 5 bars right next to a tower is 33mbs DL and 15UL. Yet with 3/5 bars you get 38/14. And I bet it never just drops too. oh why verizon WHY. With 3/5 bars on verizon I avg 8-15mbsDL and 2.5-11mbsUL, with the best being 24/15.
There are times were my H+ S2 can flat out beet my droid RAZR in youtube video loading and keeping it a flowing.

I agree, and even though they say Turkcell has one of the fastest networks available worldwide, and Steve Wozniak's thoughts about the network, I can't really say that its that fast because I used the same network for 4 years. Maybe it was the phones I used, who knows?
