noob needs help! where is the root of the sd card? - Epic 4G General

I have the froyo update zip on my sd card. I moved it to downloads thinking that's where it needed to be since it was saved in my xscope downloads. I did the 3 finger salute and it shows an option to apply update via zip, but it says no file is found. Where do I need to put the file? I have es file explorer and andro zip. Thanks.

you need to move it from downloads to the entire section. If you do from downloads and go up one file, that is the SD card.

I don't know where it needs to be, but if you are looking for root... that is not in a directory, by definition. It's as high up as you can be while still in the SD card.

Root of the SD card just means it's not within a folder

Im sorry I still don't understand. Do I need to unzip it first? It shows it's at the bottom of the list in the download folder.

Don't unzip it. Move it from the download folder and leave it outside of any folder

Put it where it was before you moved it to downloads.

Here is the closest I can get to a guaranteed noob-proof explanation:
Rooms in your house are like the folders, leave the room and you're into the house (the root of the sd card)

bah! I got it guys. Thanks. Just had to hit the up arrow in andro zip and move it there. Thanks fellas.

i see all these posts saying you can dl stuff from internet and put onto the phone?

Hi, Sorry to bother everyone.....but i am new to this and i just got this htc hd2 phone and i been TRYING to read up on stuff but not really understanding much....*i know most of yall are prob laughing right now* but i was just wondering how do you dl apps from the comp and put it into your phone? do you just put it in the sd card under a certain folder? or do i dl it from my phone? Thanks for everyones time!
Hello friend, I understand what it's like coming into a tech heavy phone like the HD2 and then trying to comprehend stuff on this site. It get easier over time, just keep reading.
Anyway in answer to your question downloading apps is easy. For your computer you just have to find the apps you want, whether it be here or other sites. Select the app you want and download it. The majority of winmo apps are .cab files. If you download a .zip then extract the .cab from inside it.
Copy the .cab file to your sdcard or phone memory whichever you prefer, then using file explorer just navigate to the app, select it and install. Most apps ask if you want to install to phone memory or sdcard, whichever you prefer. All done!
For downloading on your phone it's the same concept, find the app, download it to your sdcard or internal memory and then use file explorer to install.
Good luck
thanks alot chris! I will defiantly try this out........one more quick question if you dont mind....is that when i put the .cab file onto my sd card or phone does it need to be in a certain folder?........thanks again!
just place it anywhere on your sd card mate and navigate to it using file explorer, i have a folder on my sd card called general crap, and anything i want to install goes in there so i no where i left it

[Q] Save ROMS from phone browsing...

How would I go by downloading ROMS from my phone web browser and saving it to the root of my sd card and not the downloads folder?

Im not to sure how to change your downloads destination, but I use the Files app to move the zip files I want to the root of my SD card which is very simple.
I am currently running Squidly2.3.20 ROM and it doesn't have the stock Files app
I have Linda FM but I can't figure out how to select a file and move it.
Without the stock Files app my recommendation would actually be Astro File Manager Free. That's what I used on my Eris before I finally got my D2.
I use Root explorer and OI file manager. Nice UI and does what its supposed to do.

You can install a ROM from the downloads folder it doesn't have to be in the root. you just have to find it.
moving files using linda
When using linda open the download folder long press on the zip file then when the menu comes up select copy back out to the menu select the sd card and then select paste.

Unlocked, Rooted, Now What???

Are you looking for apps in general that you can use your sdcard contents with?
Like Adobe Reader, or Mobo player for watching video files? File expert is a good file manager which can help you navigate and see your file structure and the contents of your sdcard.

Help with SDcard ......please!!

Honestly it's better to have you ask now, than to have you post a thread "Help I bricked my tablet". That being said there are quite a few sticky threads in the DEV section of the A500 forums dedicated to getting you backed up first, then flashing to a custom ROM the correct way. I hope that helps?

To the OP.
Not to be mean, but you have no business rooting and putting any ROMs on the device without doing at least some research first. And by research I mean reading, understand and maybe watching a video or 2 to see what's up.
That being said, what you've probably read is that the file has to be put on the microSD card. You can't see the MicroSD card directly from the PC while it's in the tablet. What you want to do is use a card reader, download the file to your PC and then transfer it directly to the micro SD card. Then put that back into the tablet and do what needs to be done.
If you don't happen to have a card reader, grab an app like Astro or ES. Fiddle around with it so you know where all the directories are. You must be EXTRA careful while rooted as you will have superuser permission and can delete wrong files and copy stuff to wrong places.
Copy the file from your PC to the tab's internal memory to someplace easy like downloads or documents, wherever it doesn't really matter. Then simply use Astro or ES to copy the file from that directory to the microSD card while it's in the tablet.
So to summarize, you need to get the file on a microSD.
Option 1: Use a cardreader.
1. Download the file to your PC.
2. Remove microSD from Tablet, put it into your PCs cardreader.
3. Copy the file from your PC to the microSD card.
4. Remove microSD from cardreader, put it into your tablet.
5. Do as instructed by wherever you read it.
Option 2: Use your tablet.
1. Download Astro, ES or some sort of file manager app.
2. Connect Tablet to PC using USB
3. Copy file from PC to Tablet into a directory you'll easily remember/locate
4. Disconnect PC and Tablet
5. Locate the file on your tablet using the file manager, use it's built in function to copy the file from internal memory to external SD.
6. Do as instructed by wherever you read it.
Good Luck.

(question) Need some help

So here is my situation...
I would like one flash one of the new ICS roms and have run into an annoying problem.
I created a directory on the SD card called "Root", and downloaded the rom and placed it in the directory. I then rebooted into Recovery and after selecting update from zip on SD card, the file can't be located.
The only file in the Root directory is the first ROM I flashed and gaaps.
I can't seem to locate those files from Es file manager though.. Thoughts??

From recovery your sd card is called SD CARD.
from within say file manager your sd card will be in mnt/external_sdcard.
Some sd cards has a issue being read by cwm recovery. Often formatting the card in a Android phone or with sd format app. if k downloaded the rom file from within windows . In android file manager long tap on the file and click properties . check to see if the file is names xxxx.zip.zip
if you have stock recovery . the file must be on the root of the external sd card NOT in a folder at all. But your message makes me think you have cwm installed . if you are sure none of the above is the issue. Try re download the rom of your choice and try again.
Good Luck

Erica is right. When you copy your file to EXT SD Card, you should copy it straight to the card. NOT put it in some folder. This will make it easy for your Recovery to find.
This is the basic method. Depending on which recovery you use (RA or CWM) there are other locations you can use as well (USB Drive, Internal memory) but best to get familiar with the basic method first.
This worked for me... Thanks.
