Im not to sure how to change your downloads destination, but I use the Files app to move the zip files I want to the root of my SD card which is very simple.
I am currently running Squidly2.3.20 ROM and it doesn't have the stock Files app
I have Linda FM but I can't figure out how to select a file and move it.
Without the stock Files app my recommendation would actually be Astro File Manager Free. That's what I used on my Eris before I finally got my D2.
I use Root explorer and OI file manager. Nice UI and does what its supposed to do.

You can install a ROM from the downloads folder it doesn't have to be in the root. you just have to find it.
moving files using linda
When using linda open the download folder long press on the zip file then when the menu comes up select copy back out to the menu select the sd card and then select paste.

as the subject states, I have a picture in my text message that I want to download into my camera roll. How do I do this?
Thanks guys.
Try copying the pic to the DCIM / 100ANDRO-folder on your SD-card.'
Might do the trick
That's the thing. How do I copy it down to the SD card?
Long press the photo and select copy attached to sdcard, it will then be placed on the sdcard under download.
You may well need a file manager, like Astro to locate it then move it to your picture folder, or indeed where you like!

I guess I assume everyone has one but yes you'll need a file manager to move it to wherever you want on the sdcard unless you move it mounting the phone via usb.
Okay so i copied them down to the sd card. I use a file manager to look at the sdcard, but what directory are they located in?

ok, so... issue is, i go into applications and into "my files" but i can only explore the SD card files, before, i was able to go through the phone files as well, and now i cant. even when i connect to the computer and sync, it only lets me look around the SD card files....
the problem is i have "some pictures" on the phone that need to be removed but not deleted, how can i put them on the SD card or straight to the computer???

Use Astro File Manager, or better yet Root Explorer if you're rooted. My Files is extremely basic.
Downloaded astro. Found the files but feel stupid because it ended up being in dcim on the sd card. Thank you very much for your help.
There's just one more issue,i tried copying a file from the sd card into the font folder of the phone but it wouldn't let me.any idea why?

You need root access to do that, and Root Explorer, because RE uses Superuser and Astro does not.
ok ; this is probably a dumb question :
how do you cut and paste a file from your sdcard/bluetooth/blabla.mp3
to your phone/system/media/audio/notifications ?
i tried ASTRO File explore but i can't seem to copy/move it from the sdcard to the phone itself
ps: this is all new to me ( Android ) , its the first time we bought a Android phone .
I haven't used the Astra file menager, I use the EStrong one, but have you tried long pressing on the file to see if a menu pops up?
It does on Estrong
you can't copy files to your systemfolder because of the security on the phone.
You can try to create a folder ringtones on your sdcard, next you reboot the phone.
Then it should be reconized.
at some point you can, you need to root your phone and use "Root Explorer" and make "phone/system/media/audio/notifications" as R/W. then do what ever you like..
or you can make on sd card/media/audio/notifications and media/audio/ringtones
Don't mess with the internal storage too much.. that's the way Android wants it to be. Instead use a external storage card to store ringtones, music etc.

Thanks for all the replies , this works very well
I have the froyo update zip on my sd card. I moved it to downloads thinking that's where it needed to be since it was saved in my xscope downloads. I did the 3 finger salute and it shows an option to apply update via zip, but it says no file is found. Where do I need to put the file? I have es file explorer and andro zip. Thanks.
you need to move it from downloads to the entire section. If you do from downloads and go up one file, that is the SD card.

I don't know where it needs to be, but if you are looking for root... that is not in a directory, by definition. It's as high up as you can be while still in the SD card.
Root of the SD card just means it's not within a folder
Im sorry I still don't understand. Do I need to unzip it first? It shows it's at the bottom of the list in the download folder.
Don't unzip it. Move it from the download folder and leave it outside of any folder
Put it where it was before you moved it to downloads.

Here is the closest I can get to a guaranteed noob-proof explanation:
Rooms in your house are like the folders, leave the room and you're into the house (the root of the sd card)
bah! I got it guys. Thanks. Just had to hit the up arrow in andro zip and move it there. Thanks fellas.
So here is my situation...
I would like one flash one of the new ICS roms and have run into an annoying problem.
I created a directory on the SD card called "Root", and downloaded the rom and placed it in the directory. I then rebooted into Recovery and after selecting update from zip on SD card, the file can't be located.
The only file in the Root directory is the first ROM I flashed and gaaps.
I can't seem to locate those files from Es file manager though.. Thoughts??

From recovery your sd card is called SD CARD.
from within say file manager your sd card will be in mnt/external_sdcard.
Some sd cards has a issue being read by cwm recovery. Often formatting the card in a Android phone or with sd format app. if k downloaded the rom file from within windows . In android file manager long tap on the file and click properties . check to see if the file is names xxxx.zip.zip
if you have stock recovery . the file must be on the root of the external sd card NOT in a folder at all. But your message makes me think you have cwm installed . if you are sure none of the above is the issue. Try re download the rom of your choice and try again.
Good Luck

Erica is right. When you copy your file to EXT SD Card, you should copy it straight to the card. NOT put it in some folder. This will make it easy for your Recovery to find.
This is the basic method. Depending on which recovery you use (RA or CWM) there are other locations you can use as well (USB Drive, Internal memory) but best to get familiar with the basic method first.
This worked for me... Thanks.
