I just noticed this today...
Should the screen sit flush all the way around?
If I run my finger along the right side where the screen meets the chrome, it's smooth as can be. But if I do the same on the left side, it's not smooth. You can tell it sits a little bit lower.
Is this common, or something I need to call about and get a new phone sent out?

I didn't even realize that until I read this, it's the same with me too.
Interesting...anyone else's like this?
Same thing going on here too.

Well I'm glad it's not just me.
I wonder if anyone has any ideas how/why it's like this?
Mine looks flush. I'm sending it back because it's not as bright though
Mine too, but it's barely noticeable. You'd have to be looking for it. I suspect it has to do with how the internal parts are arranged. You can actually feel the screen give a little if you press down on the left edge, but not on the right.
I don't think it's any cause for concern though.

Anybody else's Evo Shift loose when closed? The top can move about 1mm easily, just holding it normal or upside down causes it to happen. If i shake it holding the bottom half you can feel the top slightly moving back and forth? This normal? it seems like a small issue, but even after one day it's bugging the **** out of me.
Mine does this as well and it's rather annoying.

Mine does this thought it doesn't move enough to the point that it bothers me.
pretty typical on slider phones. Alot less than the TP or TP2 IMHO...
You can try putting a case on it. Makes everything snug and tight.
^ Shift Faced
The thing is though, this isn't a spring loaded slider, there's nothing that is pulling/pushing to give it the amount of play it has when closed. Even with spring loaded sliders, they might have a little play when closed, but they dont freely move the way the shift does. In contrast, the OG droid is the same type of slider and I've gone through god knows how many replacements of those, with no play at all. And HTC > Moto's quality as far as I can tell. Until now I guess =/ Love my shift, but still, I can definitely see a new phone in my future more recently than I thought I would.
Put a case on mine and its actually really tight now. To the point where it can be difficult to slide it open so I've been using the touchscreen more now. I refuse to take the case off though...it would be my luck that as soon as I do remove it my phone would bite the dust...

This happened to my Evo.
When I had to eat the $400 to get the Shift, while I still use it without a case, I MADE SURE to get insurance on it.

Mine has a little play in it. Not too much but just enough to make it annoying. This is my first slider so not sure how "normal" it is. I would be interested to see if anyone has any sort of fix. No insurance because I'm very careful with my phones but I'm pretty sure that "slightly loose when closed" isn't considered in the warranty lol.
Mine has a small amount of play when closed. I wasn't sure if it was normal so I returned it for another one (within my 30-day window) and the new one does it too.

Had both of those. 2 tp's and a tp2. The shift (at least mine [with all side and back stickers removed]) is pretty tight. All 4 phones naked.
there was a plastic protective cover on the inside of the keyboard, along the right and left edges. If you leave that on it doesn't seem to be loose. My Mom just got her Shift a week or so ago, and never took that plastic off, and it's solid while mine feels quite loose.
Mine's solid as a rock. Thing doesn't even budge unless I physically move it with my hand.
Is it bad that I can FEEL the screen around the trackpad thingy when I use it? I feel like I'm gonna cut my thumb on the screen glass. :/

I can feel it a little, but not a crazy amount. It is in no way uncomfortable, and is neeeeeearly flush with the front of the phone for me
Mine is extreme opposite. I'm gonna try to get it fixed. NOT playing the refurb game. :/

My button has been recessed since I got it, no problems. It might Depend on which version you have, and what screen you actually have.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Ya know, never noticed that it is recessed... but it sure is. Could probably cut myself if I pressed hard enough but have no need to do so.
It shouldn't be pushed in on either screen. Looking at my DINC (only a week old) its perfectly flush with the screen.

Had mine since day one and that perfectly describes how mine is: VERY minuscule recession. Like barely noticeable.

Yep I'm in the same boat. Very nice though and no complaints about mine. Only slightly recessed on the inner circle, otherwise just about flush around the edges.
My trackpad is flush with the screen but I did have a refurb that the trackpad stuck out a little bit. For some reason I kind of liked it out a little more.
I never use my trackpad...I honestly don't know why they put one on there...

+1, never ever use it
I love the trackpad. Its so useful. When browsing websites its great for getting those hard to touch links.
all right. I've found various things about this on the web regarding other HTC phones, but I can't seem to find if anyone else has had this problem with their shift... This morning I realized that the "clear" button in the notification dropdown on CM7 wasn't working for me. I wrote it off as a weird bug. But then I tried to play angry birds, and I can't drag them back, they just fall right off the slingshot.
So I zoom in and I can pull the birds back, but when I get to this strip on the screen, they fly off without my picking my finger up.
Besides the clear button, screen presses generally seem to work, atleast when I'm selecting icons in landscape mode from my home screens. But the n1 style live wallpaper will respond to touches in this "strip" of screen by shooting off the lines around it instead of in it. Also, when I tried to drag to a different homescreen and stop in this strip, it will bounce back. same thing with notification bar. If I try to start dragging the screen from this "strip" I get no movement. The weird thing, of course is that this part of the screen isn't completey dead in terms of responding to touches, because it does register on my device that it is being touched, but drags, the notification menu clear button, the live wallpaper, and, of course, angry birds act funky when I use this part of the screen.
I guess I have to go back to sprint. I think I'm just going to flash a stock rom, but not unroot it.
I also don't have time, so I'm kind of just hoping it will go away.
ANYWAYS... anyone else having touchscreen issues with their HTC EVO shift?
PS: I think clocking my kernel at 800 instead of the 1200 I was using might have something to do with this?
Was running at 800 to preserve battery life, but back at 1200 after a nandroid restore and the problem seems fixed.
2 be clear, I had this issue on CM7 and MikFroyo, so I don't think it could be software related. But CPU clocking related.
Yeah, I also doubt that is the case.
My screen had a freek out. With out touching the screen it would open and close apps jump screens and when I touched the screen I would get no response at all. Had to RUU and send it in for a new phone it was in the connection with the screen. So the sooner you ask for a replacement the better.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
did you just call? any tips? I'm wondering if I can handle this over the phone or not. Also - what did you do while you were waiting for the new phone to come in?
turns out it was the friggen screen protector. however, before I realized that I called my local repair shop and they said that they would be able to swap my phone out for a new/refurb one for $35. Too bad it isn't actually an issue, because I've noticed that the phone is a little less responsive to touch even with the screen protector off... it's just that its not clearly an issue at this point.
I actually had a similar issue with a replacement phone where the left side about 1/8" wouldn't respond (couldn't press q button on keyboard at all). After some research I found out about a great lil app to test screen touch response and any bad areas and it helped me diagnose that it in fact was the screen having a fault...look up "touch test" in the appstore and it should narrow down where and if your screen has a bad area that's not responding...it helped to get my in-store replacement in and out the store since I could show them the issue right away along side an in-store model. I hope this helps and I that I read the post correctly. Let me know if it helps you.

My screen had a dead line going across the middle of the screen but only when swiping side to side, for some reason vertically it was fine....
unrooted, went to sprint store repaired in less than 30 minutes...

Awesome tip, dude. This will help me get a replacement for sure. The issue came back and this is solid proof it exists. Gonna make it hard for anyone to pretend there isn't a problem. Thanks!

No problem...glad to help...it definitely saved me time...I installed it on my phone and the stores phone and compared them side by side...that way they can't give you a BS answer of "screen needs calibration" etc etc. Lemme know how it goes.

Sorry didn't respond faster. I just called them and they sent me a new phone next day and I sent them the old phone. Easy as pie no problems with the reps or the techs they didn't argue about it at all. It did take a long time on the phone because they were checking the phone settings no sure what this was but oh well. Just remember to ruu back.
Killer Shift
So they ended up still pretending that there wasn't an issue, saying that maybe it was just the touchtest app. It took a while to convince them that it wasn't just an app.. but after I left it with them for an hour (an hour where I'm sure they did nothin) I came back and showed them the issue again, compared it to the shift that they had, and they finally agreed to order me a refurb. A hassle, but a necessary one.

Agreed..It's awful how there is no set policies when it comes to service. Your fate pretty much rests with the tech you happen to get. Some are easy to get along with and some (obviously) aren't.

Yeah, I dont think an rma is going to fix this. Don't squeeze it so hard... fixed.
Mine does it as well, so not knockin ya but. It has yet to be an issue in actual real life use. Sure you can sit there and pinch the thing, but just stop, and you'll never notice it again.
I am very OCD about my devices. Honestly, as long as I know that nothing is wrong with it in that category, I will be fine
I noticed the ripple on two of the three N7's I tried. While I think it probably SHOULDN'T be happening (i.e., it represents an underlying design and/or manufacturing flaw), I don't think it will cause any issues. Like the screen lift, it's one of those things where it's technically a defect, but it's not likely to cause any performance or other issues.
If I hadn't had other problems with mine, I'd have put the best N7 in a case and forgotten all about those two issues.
What were your other problems
My first one had pretty good screen seperation all along the left side, and pretty bad lightbleed from the left side.
My new one has barely any lift (just a 1 inch section, about a third the way up on the left side), but has the lcd ripple.
The screen seperation isn't even noticeable unless you lay it flat and look across the glass and this one feels solid, the first one was spongy.
I can handle the ripple, because it only happens when im messing with it, trying to make it happen.

Tried it on mine. I am kind of shocked at how hard it had to press to get it to ripple. I am hoping get that the op has a worse case than I do because if not this is crazy. I would never pinch that hard I every day use.

So I have desided I would live with the phones warm ish colour its not as bad now. But the mid right side of the phone I can say hit settings on the notification bar and I can clearly see marks happen on the screen for a few seconds like I was pushing down hard on the screen when I certainly was not :/ Whats this and are they all like this or is this one a dud?

Okay thanks. How much pressure do you have to.use before it would do it? Im about to drive down to best buy real quick even though its a little under an hour drive to get a.replacement.
Isn't this also using the zero gap technology? If so then the "closeness" improves touchscreen responsiveness.

I just got back from doing an exchange this one is NOT as bad as the first one its manageable! The screen colour is a little better too still warm but not redish like the other one.
