Can we use the earbuds with a mic?
I'm guessing no. Is there a workatound if not? Like go mono with the voice and use the other line for a mic?
Could def go for gv or skype

No hardware support, that's required to get input from the phone-style headsets with mic, the OS wouldn't know what to do with it either. The only hope is when bluetooth gets working, and we can use headset profiles.

Adding a mic (physically) is definitely possible. Waiting for someone adventurous enough to do so. I googled around and found the pin-outs for the DAC chip in the NC - TLV320DAC3100 which has a MICBIAS pin. That is where a microphone should be wired to. Now, regarding the OS knowing where to access the audio input, I have no idea. It could be already in the existing driver waiting to be unlocked. Someone who is more knowledgeable to work on this would be a great help to the NC owners.
I read back somewhere that it was possible with the new usb hosting tweak.

Don't think so...not according to the datasheet. Yes, there are two analog inputs along with a micbias source, but the analog inputs are ONLY routed to a an output mixer and are never go to an ADC . Output mixer is sourced from DAC, analog inputs, or a mix of the two. Sorry
Bluetooth microphones are a no go for now. We need to know the GPIO pin in order to use them(if it even exists). USB microphones work somewhat already with USB host in CM7.
Has there been any further progess on this?
With Gingerbread's ability to have 'internet calls' - built in softphone - this could be the KILLER application.
I can get GV Callback to dial, and actually connect a call.
SOmetimes the nook locks up, however....

USB Sound
I ordered a USB sound "device" from Amazon for Can$7.00. The Nook recognizes the sound device in USB host mode (after reboot). The only problem with the mic was that the recording and playback sample rates were different, so the playback was ultra slooooow.
I have looked in the logs and found a message that the sample rate is set on initialization, but that is as far as I got so far.
I'll take a further look and post my results if I get anywhere.

i'm using normal 3.5mm headphones to listen to music on my pocketpc and i always have to remove the headphones when talking to a person.
so i'm asking if there is any possibility to activate the phone's mic although a headset is connected?
ya i also want to know .
would be handy for sure...
I think it has something to do with the 3.5 headphone adapter type. When I used certain ones I would not be able to use the mic but when I used a cheap adapter from Radio Shack it would...
Check this thread out - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350314
There is something in post 8 and also a HW hack but this involves new HW.
A thought (to be tested) - maybe it's possible to use 3,5 mm (or 2,5mm) output, split it in two, have headphones on one wire and attach a mic to the other end on ur shirt or smth.

thanks for the link to this thread... for everyone using a phone that doesnt have a 3.5mm direct output, this seems to be the solution! but i use a htc touch hd so i cant connect another cable for my 3.5mm headphones.
maybe there is a solution/hack that lets you modify the headset-profile in general to keep the phone's mic activated. or maybe there is a way to deactivate the headset-profile so someone can write a small app that deactivates the headset-profile as soon as there is an incoming or outgoing call?
Welcome. But by splitting I meant getting a 1 male - 2 female Y-cable, so what do You mean You can't connect another cable? You connect headphones on one female and the headset to the other, why shouldn't it work? I am aware that the HD has a headset that plugs into the audio port. So does my v1520, therefore I would personally be interested in the outcome as I would use the solution to link audio port to car input and use the internal mic as well
Maybe a profile manager like PhoneAlarm (Pro) or similar proggy that has editable and configurable profiles could also do the trick...
this is the wrong place for questions,
please refer to the Q&A section
thank you
I've was on the market for a high quality audio recorder but they seem way more expensive than they should be (£100+) yet the only difference between price ranges is the options offered to the consumer.
I was wondering if the HD2 works with a microphone such as this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-ECM-DS70P-Microphone-Stereo-Plugin/dp/B00005QBV2 If so, it could probably equal the high end recording devices. 200 bucks worth. See I have the above microphone and I'm trying to record in notes but despite the microphone being read and distinguished by the headphone symbol in the HD2, it's not picking up the sound.
Does anyone know if the HD2 can support external microphones? If maybe a certain program needs to be used to activate it? It could be a great solution for high quality gig recordings and dictations.
The HD2 uses a jack plug with 3 rings, which you can see on the stock headphones, and the mic is wired to the "inboard" ring your mic doesn't have. That's to keep compatibility with any standard headphones.
So yes it can take an external mic, but it needs to be wired correctly to such a plug. And can obviously only be mono.
Then, whether it can record full quality or applies a "telephone" filter to the input needs testing.
Mono would be suffice, but as there are two mics on the external device, wouldn't there be any way to allow stereo?
What kind of plug are you talking about in regards to wiring it to one?
Thanks kilrah for your very useful post.
Just look at the headphones you received with the phone, and compare the plug with the one on your mic, you'll quickly understand
No way to get stereo as the HD2 only has a mono mic input.

For the Axim X50 / X51 PDAs there was an adapter that took a 3-connector mic jack and rooted it to the correct ring on the 4-connector Axim socket. I tried to find an example with not much luck, but here is a link to start with:
(I am not allowed to post a link; sorry) go to mobilitysite and look up "seidio-audio-adapters".
Unfortunately, the seidio product does not seem to exist anymore... Anyway, would an adapter like this work on the LEO? I would think so, same concept.
Another alternative would be to use the USB port with sthg like the griffin imic but with a micro-USB adapter. Any chance for this?
Good question.
Anyone offer any enlightenment or an idea on adapters?

I have a slightly different question: if I plug standar eraphones with no mic, when receiving a cal, can i talk into the device's mic?
Yes!
filler
Didn't see this in the spec but wanted to ask because people here claiming that Google voice is working which I am assuming required a mic to talk ?
F8
No.
10 char
You don't use the Google Voice app for talking so that wouldn't be the reason it doesn't work.
if there's no microphone built in, is there still audio capability? I ask because I came across this:
http://www.oriongadgets.com/Barnes-...Audio-Converter-with-microphone-pid-9081.html
I note that the device photo shows a stereo plug (2 rings + tip) and not 3 rings + tip. Some old timers who encountered the Sharp Zaurus may have known that it had stereo audio out, but one channel turned into a microphone when the audio input was active. I wonder if the nook is similar?

Looks like a Crapgadget that's just been copied-and-renamed from similiar devices.
However that does not exclude the fact that it's POSSIBLE there's a microphone in the headset jack. The salting guys would know.
That would be great but I doubt it
I believe it was discovered that there is no audio in on the headphone jack so that is out.
Bluetooth is not functional yet so thats out.
Usb is out because it does not recognize external devices.
My hope is that a mic can be soldered in somewhere, but thats up to the salting team.
I use Google Voice for texting...
Doesn't mean that we won't be able to connect a Bluetooth microphone (after the BT hacking dust settles)

Just a follow-up -- Bluetooth *is* working now, and even USB device has an alpha-beta release - some stuff is working there, too.

Ooooh Fun stuff! Now to get a BT headset that will work :-D!
The only problem is the software switching for BT. The headsets tend to have serious range issues, look in the BT device thread.
Is there a microphone in the nook color or not?
I have stylus for my nook color that can be pluged in to the audio port. The plastic peace that plugs into the audio looks like it has the 3 rings 2 for audio and the other for the mic. Retailers are selling audio and mic for the nook color, the one I'm looking at is about $9.00 so I'm going to give it try! I will let you know what happens.
hi all
I know you can buy adapters for 3.5mm headphones to combine the left and right stereo into a combined mono output for both ear buds.
...surely, there must be some software for Android that can do this for me without an adapter? Work are happy for me to listen to music but require me to keep an ear free to hear colleague questions or calls - but with one headphone, I lose half the stereo.
Anyway of making both channels go into one - without the need for an adapter?
It seems to be a known issue. I agree that the accessibility options in Android are lacking and i hope you get this soon.

Thanks for the link mate; I trawled Google before posting this as I couldn't find an answer anywhere. Evidently, I didn't look hard enough.
I've sent an email to the creators of PowerAMP for Android; apparently their next release will have a balance feature and it'd be nice if they solved the problem with a 'mono' button too...
An option would be to use a bluetooth headset and if your phone is a2dp then download one of the mono bluetooth apps from the market to use it to stream music.
Understand you asked for the wired but not everyone is aware of the other options they may have.
I know that software can choose between speaker and headset even when the headset is plugged in (since the FM radio can do that). But is it possible to force audio out of both the headset and the phone speaker? I ask because I have an audio docking that I'm going to use in the car, and if this is impossible, I'll have to put up an extra speaker and amp for when I listen to the radio but want TomTom to warn mea bout those pesky speed cameras... So is it possible with a sneaky trick to choose both headset and speaker?
That can only be done over at the kernel's and the framework's side. The best bet is to customize the kernel. Detection of the headset plugging/unplugging is done by kernel’s switch driver and the event is sent to 'HeadsetObserver.java' which broadcasts the intent 'Intent.ACTION_HEADSET_PLUG' with information about state as plugged/unplugged. This is received by 'PhoneApps.java' and the audiomanagerr is informed to turn on/off the speaker which further passes the information to Libaudio.so (AudioHardware.cpp). These information is passed to the kernel to switch between the speakerphone and Headset. This might differ with Android 2.3, but forcing the kernel to play sound to both the headset and the speaker might be the only way. The first few actions are done by the framework itself. You can try or suggest this feature to the CM team. I know this is not what you want, but for the time being, you can perhaps use a dual audio jack splitter and connect your headset and a speaker. Alternatively, there a few apps in the market which enables live streaming on your PC over Wi-Fi. You can try streaming the media so that the audi is played by the PC and the connected speakers. At the same time, you can plug in your headset. This should work, but no guarantees...hope this helps, and i have to say that it will be an awesome feature if the devs can find a way to cook this feature into a stable android build!
Android? Yuck! Good on tablets, totally hopeless on phones! Was going to use my brother's Desire for on day, begged him to give me back something that actually worked efficiently after two hours! No, I'm talking about good old Windows Mobile 6.5 here. Didn't really think I'd have to specify that in a thread about general HD2...
While it might be possible, I doubt anyone will do it.
however, you can get audio through both headphones and external speakers using a special jack. it has a male part on one side and two female parts on the other.
of course. I've used the jack splitter on several things (I do a lot of work with custom installation of computers as whole house media servers). And that's what I meant in the first post when I wrote "if this is impossible, I'll have to put up an extra speaker and amp for when I listen to the radio but want TomTom to warn mea bout those pesky speed cameras."
But I have found sort of a solution: Start the HD2's FM radio, switch that to playback through the speaker (which is why I know this not only might be possible, but is possible with software, since the FM radio can play through the speaker even with a 3.5 mm jack plugged in) and mute the radio. Then all sound will come through the speaker. Kind of a pain in the ass to do it that way. I have found a Mort script that does it, with a few modifications, but I haven't had the time to check that out yet.
that's a weird workaround XD
I'll try it later.
Yeah, weird all right. Actually it's been used before. Found it on Google, with a reference to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444581 Another phone, same method.
