Well they have been using them in the latest commercials featuring their simply everything unlimited plans. The main woman uses one and is typing on it but uses the on screen keyboard the whole time and never slides it out (like the majority of us).

Ford must have rooted their phone! Lol
Of course not..Sprint spends their entire years advertising budget on 1 phone that comes out in June..thats it..no other phone gets any serious promotion..they didn't even advertise the Epic when it came out...the only time sprint decided to put any advertisement into it was a month later when Epic won the PC World #1 award..and it was only for a short time...

I've seen that advertisement and another, both were in WIRED I think. I also noticed the 270 degree rotation... kinda made me chuckle.
270 degree rotation is introduced in Froyo (all phones).

I went that way, once, in college, just for the experience.
Maybe not as much as the EVO, but they are. On that Premiere flyer they had the EVO and Epic on it, so they at least consider it one of their two main devices.
Plus you're assuming Sprint is "playing favorites". Though, who cares if they are?
At any rate, who says HTC and Samsung aren't the major reason? Maybe HTC is footing most of the bill.
I saw an advertisement for it yesterday in the movie theaters..
But guess which phone got advertised right after...<_< EVO and EVO shift. /facepalm
I noticed a month or 2 ago that I always saw evo commercials and never see epic ones. Even my gf noticed and asked why they didn't have commercials for "my phone" ever. Oh well I'm still very happy with it and my keyboard
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I don't have Froyo, but the ADW EX Launcher app on the android market makes it so that the phone auto-rotates if you turn it on its side without having to have the keyboard open.
Food for thought. No need to root or go through the process if you aren't willing to do it.
I kinda miss the 30 sec "epic ___" commercials... they were kinda funny.
Samsung epic running ViperROM 4.0.4
They switched from the EVO to the Epic in the TV Show "The Fringe"....
It's just "fringe"
doesnt matter. its in the friday night death slot now. i hope that horrible show just goes away as fast as it came.

Okay guys, we had a run with our top of the line phone. Kills me that we're about to be outed by the "EVO 2". Wasn't expecting a predecessor so quickly.
Lastly, I was at a public event here in Las Vegas, Nevada today called Aviation Nation where the US air force does a little bit of showing off. Well anyways, I saw a surprising amount of EVO's there, at least 6. Versus 4 or 5 iPhone 4's.
What can I say? Phones gone particularly mainstream.

Also, get Steve Jobs on the line and have Apple file for bankruptcy.

The Desire Z/G2 is 3.7". It also might be a Sprint version of the Merge coming to VZW. That one has a 3.8" screen. I'm just going by the leaked pic of the Knight/Speedy from a couple weeks back. It was noticeably smaller than the EVO.
Do you think it'll be more like shift or evo?
I hope it'll be evo size with full slide out tilting keyboard like touch pro2. I can deal with a little more thickness. But I don't think I want something I can't fit in my pants pocket.

I was at the mall and walked into the at&t store and I started.playing with the atrix. Not impressed at all. Of course it being at&t The download speeds on speedtest.net were awful. I got like 150kbs down. My smartbench 2010 score was 1256. I can't remember what the games Index was. My epic honestly felt just as fast and smooth as that dual core. I know android isn't really able to take advantage of dual cores yet but it just made me appreciate my epic a little more. I also definitely wouldn't get it cause its locked down way to much with the bootloader so very small chance of custom kernels. Any one else been able to okay with it? Thanks for reading my post.

With the dock its a nice phone, but I would have never invested so much in a locked boot loader and encryption to boot! Many developers aren't going to invest much if any time in the phone due to the amount of work it will take to get CM7/ etc working for it. My good friend has it, and though it runs rather nicely and the dock is pretty cool, I think they really crippled it with the lock out abilities.
Yes you are right. The.****.is very nice. I would jump on the phone if the bootloader wasn't locked. I honestly just thought it was going to be better than what it was. Once I saw this phone, I was thinking THAT was how M$ could get back in the game.
If they could put out a Windows phone that ran something like Windows 7, and connected like the Atrix does making it a laptop, that would be a big deal, and provide a really great platform, almost to the point of replacing laptops and desktops for home use.
Sadly, I doubt M$ could get it done.
As nice as the concept is, having a laptop setup does little good, if you cant run your desktop apps.
While I use my phone for most stuff now, I still am tied to my laptop for things like advanced picture and video editing.
It would be nice if it didn't dangle off the back either... If the phone slid into place where the touch pad should be that would be a nice and clean solution

I figured anyone with even the least bit of mental development would've had their skeptic alarm go off at the sight of all the Atrix hype. The more people talk about a gadget, the less the gadget speaks for itself. At least, that sure has been history's lesson.
In fact, the surface is never the reality anymore. Dual core has never meant double performance, free services doesn't change the fact that we're Google's product and retailers buying ads are Google's customers, revolutionary doesn't mean Apple actually built their own hardware, and saying M$ has never made anybody cool. ;p

Set From My 3.0.1 Bonsai Epic 4g
Mildly related: I walked into Costco and the carnival guys working the Verizon kiosk called me over to look at the new Moto Xoom. He went into his spiel about how great Honeycomb is and everything. I asked him if it was rooted and he said, "What's that?" "Newbie," I thought to myself. He let me play with it and I decided to download Quadrant to see what it would pull. He asked me what Quadrant was. I told him it was a benchmarking tool (but secretly I'm thinking, "You're a tool!"). So I run Quadrant and the Xoom with its Tegra2 gets 1800. I'm like WTF? So I pulled out my Epic Bonsai monster and cranked SetCPU to 1200/1200 and ran Quadrant. He looked at my Epic wide-eyed as I showed him the 2450 on my screen. I walked away feeling a little smug.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Except the 2450 was an artificially inflated score and quadrant isn't optimized for honeycomb.

Looks like Sprint is going to have to give me a new phone since I'm on my third Shift since release, and this one has major antenna problems (lose data, can't make calls half the time, texts are intermittent, etc.). So I'm wondering if I should try one more shift or actually get an Evo. I'm not getting a Samsung device, they just feel like crap to me.
I don't know what to do darnit lol.

I say stick with the Shift . But I'm biased. Love my Shift, hands down best phone I've ever owned. I had an EVO before this. The EVO is a great phone. But a little too big for the pocket. Plus the Shift can be OC'd way higher. But either way your good. Plenty of Dev's on both phones. Plus you can run some awesome Mik roms on both. Just my two cents.

I looked at the 3D, but it just seems gimmicky to me.
The Evo is likely my best option, but I'll certainly miss the keyboard. I even thought about the Nexus S or Epic, but I just hate the feel of Samsung phones, so I don't think they're an option. I'm not entirely sure they'll let me get another Shift, but if they do you can bet I'm asking for a new one and not a refurb
I've rooted all three Shifts multiple times, the first two were hardware issues (loose keyboard--me being too picky, then a loose ear speaker). Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

Well, if you've still got the problems keep calling and complaining. The Evo and the Shift should be an even swap I think. I haven't called them to find out yet.

well, I got the new phone in the mail, activated it this morning. Other than having a somewhat loose slider again (which is going to be extremely annoying) it looks like it might work.

Okay, after much hemmin' and hawin', my girlfriend has decided that she wants an Android phone to replace her aging Crackberry Tour. The phone has served she and I rather reliably for almost 3 years, but she played with her friend's Fascinate, she got wet for the Sammy. For some reason she hates my Evo and thinks it is too big. So it is down to the Epic 4G (because she wants a bloody keyboard). I am trying to talk her into either the Shift or the NS4G but that may be difficult. If I gotta get her the Epic, I will. I liked the phone when I had it for 2 weeks as a demo, but I know the support for it from both the Dev standpoint and the Android standpoint blows.
Either way she goes, the phone is getting rooted. Too bad she likes iOS, er Touchwiz.

Right out of the box, nothing done to it at all. It didn't make it through the 30 day return policy. It was more like 2 weeks.
Well, I gave her the phone last night and she loves it. It helps that it's rooted with the latest GB update.
I had forgotten how much nicer the Galaxy S screens were than the Evo.
Not understanding why Sammy doesn't just EOL the Epic. We already have the next gen out in the wild. And I'm thinking more and more each day that we will never even see 'official' Gingerbread.
Tired of having to keep checking here to see if official 2.3.4 is here and it never is and I crawl back in my hole and cry myself to sleep.
Don't know why I even care, my next phone won't be until the Galaxy S III hits the US. Flame away I guess.
Maybe because the epic touch was released after the evo 3d?

My theory is that this phone has a lot left in it. For a phone still running Froyo it can still hold its own against Gingerbread phones. This was one of the few Froyo phones to get skype video chat support (even though we can't use the ffc). This phone is. Damn good phone and now with LTE coming mid-2012 no one will want to give it up. Most people with an Evo have moved on to a new phone, Epic owners are still holding on. Plus compared to the Evo Shift this is the best andrid phone with a keyboard and no telling if there will be another. Just my thoughts

EOL was supposed to be October but at the bottom of the EOL it said *these dates are subject to change
Obviously they changed for the epic.
Probably because there aren't a lot of high end Android phones with a physical keyboard on Sprint, while there are plenty of ones without. It fills a niche. The EVO doesn't.
I hope this mean they will keep the epic 4g as a mid-range phone and extend its life all throughout 2012.

With the top saying dates subject to chance. Apparently people don't read things in their entirety and just what they want to see.

ok you read into it that the chance meant the epic what about the chance meaning one of the other phones like the evo 4g? bottom line is that sprint did announce the end of life epic 4g which is what i said and that they listed it as october which is true. so i did report it correctly and sprint has not said anything to the contrary about it either, so oct is it...

Outdated list, sprint Has removed it from the list since then. Of course they announced it, but "subject to change" which it has. Here you go.

ok but i still stand by the fact that it was announced. however just because it was not on the other list does not mean anything. It could be that since it was announced no need to state it again or that perhaps sprint is only giving it a month or so longer as verizon is getting the epic 4g 2 (now not apart of the galaxy s series) so we also know that sprint is getting a version as well also not a gs2 or gs.

Actually they do need to restate them hence the EVO still being there. And the Stratosphere is going to be a galaxy s line phone, and sprint is not getting one.

Why would they list the EVO twice if that was the case? Back in July and recent. I understand where you're coming from but this absolutist end of the Epic mood you put into your posts is unneeded. There is no point in complaining, it's a phone, we're on Android. The OS and the phones move so fast that top of the line is end of the line in a matter of days to be figurative. It's not end of line at the moment. It will be but not now.

I know some were hoping for EOL so they could time their insurance fraud properly to get an upgrade instead of a replacement Epic.

Probably because there aren't a lot of high end Android phones with a physical keyboard on Sprint, while there are plenty of ones without. It fills a niche. The EVO doesn't.

Exactly. There isn't a phone that has replaced it yet. I require a physical keyboard for my day to day use of my phone. I have tried to go virtual keyboard and just can't do it. Kind of hard to type shell commands in with virtual keyboard without the frustration of wanting to throw the phone out the window kicking in.

The EVO is a piece of crap and the Epic is Epic.
I believe the Epic is Epic and the EVO is dull.
Even if it does get EOL'd...our development here will keep this phone on the map for a LONG time in my opinion!!

if we ever get gingerbread. i think their maybe a newer secret built that we dont know about. i am flashed to revol with working internet and text but mms is no go... tried it with gingerbread and ec05.... but the reason i switched is because of end of life stigma. but lets face it many devs have switched to newer duel core phones and the dev community for epic was good considering we had nowhere near the evo 4g community but people are moving on.

Yeah, I know some have moved on, but even without GB source right now, we still have some awesome folks out here STILL making improvements to EC05...when GB source gets here, I believe (hopefully) we will see the return of a few. I think this phone will be around for a long time! All my opinion of course ....

I still think it's a great phone. It does everything I need and I even run my business from it. I remember when the only way to update your OS was to by a new phone or hack it. So I'm not really worried about GB. I can't miss what I never had. Just my $.02

Dude because not everyone goes and buys a new phone once they come out not everyone has money nor wants to do that. PLAIN IN SIMPLE.
