maybe I missed something with tmobile GPRS

Despite tmobile saying that the 5.99 restricted dataplan will not work on the Wizard even though I've had it working since the day I got the phone, I stumbled upon something that seems strange henceforth I think I'm missing something with this GPRS stuff:
Here is what I've found recently:
Use "tmobile web on wizard"
set proxy to 216.155.165.50 on port 8080
set T-mobile data to dial wap.voicestream.com
This will allow pretty much complete web browsing, except for FTP and Remote desktop.
I'm sure everyone on this form knows this by now.
Though I was playing around with the bluetooth modem/USB modem capabilities of the device.
In the connection settings for the number dialed you use *99# change a few setting in windows and then you have your GPRS connection on your PC. Change firefox to use 216.155.165.50:8080 for the proxy good to go.
Though friday I discovered something, the internet was down at my house and I needed get online, seeing that I know I can use my phone as a internet adaptor I paired the bluetooth and created a dialup connection using bluetooth number dialed *99#. I was on the web but this time it was different, I no longer had to put in the proxy into my browser, RDP worked, VNC works, it is like I had a full (somewhat slow) connection. No restrictions except FTP access.
I find this great, I can do pretty much everything I could normally but what is different? Did tmobile screw up?, is it using my minutes instead? Is there something about the networking when used as a modem I do not understand?
Though I am not able to replicate this level of non-restriction on my phone itself (which would be really nice), when is the other foot going to drop and I get really large phone bill from tmobile?

I don't think you're going to get hammered with a big data bill but those ports will not stay open forever. Check out threads in the t-mo forums on hofo from the last few days. Everyone had connection troubles and now it looks like the ports are closed again on the t-zones apn. Prior to this I was able to tether, stream, run bit-torrent(slowly), d/l large files, etc. Now everyone is reporting, myself included, that we HAVE to use the proxy again and the ports are closed up now. Some people, mostly east coast, are reporting no problems yet. But from Cali to Illinois it looks like the free ride is over. And I'm finding it hard to open my wallet and fork out $20/mo for what I was paying $6/mo for last week. Especially when seeing my bro down the hall from me paying Cingular $30/mo and getting 900+kbps down and 384 kbps up. Speeds are way down on the t-zones apn now too. Have been getting 190-220kbps now getting around 70, if I'm lucky. Way to go T-Mo, I stab at thy heart.

I'm really pissed now because I used to be able to access Citrix through the proxy but it is not letting me anymore.

hi, i am running the latest Darkstone froyo w/sense v2, its been working great for me , the only issue i had was with 3g not connecting all time and mms not sending, after playing around with APN settings i finally got everything working perfectly, my question is :
- under APN setting, most people say that you need to put "APN type: default,supl,mms" for things to work, i didnt use it and left it blank and my 3G and mms are working flawlessly, so i am just wondering is it really that important or will it make a difference for 3G speed if i used this setting?

For me i still can't get 3G data to work, i connect but with no data transfer. I'm using Desire HD SD ROM from MCCM on my HD2.

So I think I got free tethering to work on my MG with tmobile $30 prepaid plan by changing the APN, but not 100% sure if I got the process down correctly since I've been tinkering, rooted and still on 4.3.
Anyways, maybe you guys can give a try and see if it works. This is aimed towards t-mobile users who don't have hotspot as part of their plan or have already exhausted their monthy tethering limit.
steps:
- go to settings > More....> mobile networks > Access Point names
- add a new APN by hitting the "+" sign
- Set "Name" to what ever you'd like (e.g. Hotspot4life)
- Set "APN" to fast.t-mobile.com
- Set "APN protocol" to IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4
- Leave everything else untouched
- hit menu button then select save
- Select the APN just created.
- Active native tethering (assuming you've adjusted ID and password already to your liking)
- If it works, go back into settings and select old APN... and check if tethering has been blocked.
Note: there's no need to reboot when switching APNs.
If it doesn't work, then a file change I did beforehand while rooted made a difference or something else was a factor.

t mobile and Three use Packet Sniffing to check the file headers to detect tethering. If you tether an iOS device or an OSX device to your phone, often they will not get flagged and the tethering will work. If you use a Windows PC or other device it will be detected immediately. I mention this, as it could be a factor if you tried tethering with an ipad or something and got it to work. Messing with the APN on Three has no effect, so I'd be surprised if it works with T Mobile.

I just got a MG last week and was frustrated to find tethering would not work at all out of the box. I stumbled across your post and made the changes you recommended and it worked very well at first - for maybe15 minutes or so. Then I noticed my Chromebook lost connection and upon further diagnosis it was the Moto G that lost connection to the T-Mobile network. I tried to turn of tethering, but that didn't help and I finally had to reboot the phone to get it back on the network. I switched back to the default APN and the phone worked reliably again, but obviously not tethering. In the past couple days I've tried the new APN with your settings a few times and get similar results - it works for a while, but then the phone loses cell connectivity. I've since found that I toggling Airplane Mode on and off will restart the cell connection and tethering will also start working again, so it kind of works but not as well as it should.
I've been doing more searching regarding the fast.t-mobile.com APN and other threads seem to indicate that APN is specifically for LTE phones. Since the Moto G doesn't have an LTE chip, I wonder if that's causing the reliability problem?

I rarely tether, so I haven't used it in every scenario. But when I do tether, its while tethering to my tablet, my friend's phone, or desktop/laptop WITH user agent switcher on Chrome to mask the desktop/laptop as a mobile device. After reading your post, I tethered to my laptop for an hour and did not encounter any issues. Do you lose connectivity even when the phone's signal strength is strong? Have you tried tethering to a different device (mobile)?

Thanks for the follow up. I've been trying it again today from my home where I get better cellular signal strength, but I'm getting similar results. It connects up and runs for 15-30 minutes and then starts flaking out. After rebooting both the phone and Chromebook, the Chromebook kept trying to go to a T-Mobile sign-in page, but couldn't even load that. And I too am using a Chrome extension to change the user agent to Android. The Moto G seems to be working fine and not losing it's connection this time.
I have also been able to test tethering on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.2 today and the Chromebook is connecting just fine and staying connected - no problems at all. I compared the APN settings between the 2 phones and the Nexus has the MMSC entry filled out (which xda won't allow me to post here because i'm too new), so I added that into the Moto G, but it did not help. Darn. I really like the Moto G, but really need reliable tethering. Thanks again...

You need install a User Agent String changer addon in your browser and change the string.

Thanks for the recommendation! Sorry I didn't make it more clear in my reply above, but I am using a user agent switcher - currently the Ultimate User Agent Switcher. Just to be sure, I disabled that extension and installed the User-Agent Switcher for Chrome that you linked to, but unfortunately I'm getting the same result - the Chromebook takes forever and keeps trying to connect to the "Welcome to T-Mobile" page.
And I tried again with the Nexus 4 and the Chromebook connects up immediately and runs great - no T-Mobile page or any other problems. I did a little more research and found a post on the Nexus 4 forum recommending disabling IPV6 in the APN Protocol, so I switched both phones from IPV6/IPV4 to just IPV4 and am getting the same result on each. Both phones work fine on the cell network and Internet, but the Chromebook only tethers successfully to the Nexus 4.

You need to set the Firefox string in my thread. That is the only desktop browser string that works. The reason why Chromebook/Ipad/Ipod devices work is because T-Mobile allows those devices since they can all have Cellular radios in them for radio. It would block legit paying customers.

Unfortunately, I just tried all 3 of the Firefox settings in the user agent switcher and rebooted the Chromebook each time, but no joy - each time after restarting and connecting to the Moto G wi-fi hotspot the Chromebook just tries to redirect me to the T-Mobile site.

Do you have the T-Mobile branded Moto G? If so you may need to disable the upsell app as I did in my L9 thread. You may also need to edit /etc/apns-conf.xml
Also, use this app instead of the builtin tethering. It may be notifying the carrier of tethering.

I am using an unlocked US GSM model of Moto G I purchased from Amazon.
I have not rooted yet, but may try that and the tethering app you linked to. I'm wondering if the stock app included on the Motorola device is the culprit, whereas the stock tethering app on the Nexus device may not be reporting back...

Wifi still iffy

Verizon S7edge just got an update to deal with wifi problems. Haven't seen a thread here lately, is everyone doing OK with theirs? My wifi will randomly disconnect from my tried and true wireless router.

I have noticed in and out WiFi over the last few days.

T-Mobile here and seems to be fine.

Wi-Fi for my wife and me has been pretty spotty too. Just been sticking to cellular data for the time being.

Wifi data also seems slow.

WiFi for me is very slow. On my Nexus 7 2013 I get 80-90mbps but on my S7e I get 20-30mbps on the same WiFi and same server. I've tried everything and nothing fixes it.

I had the same problem but found something in the forums that said creating a new APN but using IPv4 instead of IPv6. My wifi went from 15mbps to 86mbps. Hopefully, it's legit and I keep getting these speeds.

Do you happen to have the specific link or the settings handy?

I don't remember where I found it but copy everything from your existing APN settings and set a new one up exactly the same way but use IPv4 instead of where it says IPv6. Everything else stays the same.
Thus far, my speeds have been consistently much faster.

Nope you're not the only one. My wifi turns itself off periodically after the update. Really annoying, and still happens even after a factory reset.

Just an fyi, the apn only affects mobile data, not wifi.

Just a thought, is there a way to specify which band the wi-fi is using? 2.4GHz vs 5GHz

I've been having a nightmare with this. I'm on T-Mobile, and my S7 Edge is smooth, but when connected to my Netgear C6300 modem/router through Time Warner Cable no Google Services work. Youtube, Gmail, Play Store, Google Maps, etc.
I've scoured the forums and the only thing that works is the following:
1. Turn off WiFi, go to Play Store and download DNSet.
2. After it installs, turn on your WiFi and run DNSet.
That solved all my problems. My speeds were always perfect.
The other way to do this is to ROOT the phone and point the DNS Servers to Google's Servers:
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
DNSet does this without rooting. This is a IPv6 problem. TWC say they are IPv6 compatible but run the test online, all the IPv6 tests fail.
I am curious.. what is the root cause of this? Every other device with that modem on WiFi works. Galaxy S6, iPad3, iPad Mini, my freaking fridget, thermostat, computers, Mac Book Air... just this S7 Edge.
I'm a developer, but my knowledge with networking very limited. So any experience/info on this would be greatly appreciate it.
PS: Every time I disconnect from my WiFi, I Force Stop DNSet to turn it off; the app doesn't provide a "Quit" option :/

Quick update.
Today, T-Mobile released an OTA update for Marshmellow v6.01
The new update fixed the WiFi issues I was having specifically when connected to my WiFi with Google Services: Play Store, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, basically anything Google.
So, if you are wary of using DNSet, then contact your cell phone provider and let them know. If your cell phone provider won't admit to having any problems, then you will need to wait for an upgrade.

No Internet with WiFi Hotspot

Is anyone else having issues with using the WiFi hotspot on the OP5? When I connect my latptop to the hotspot it says connected but no internet - I'm using stock OOS on T-Mobile.
EDIT: The solution I found was through this website: https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/bypass-t-mobiles-tethering-limit-for-free-0161404/ . Adding a new APN with these settings fixed my issue:
Name: T-Mobile US LTE
APN: fast.t-mobile.com

Try changing apn to IPv4 instead of IPv6.

I have the same problem and my apn is set to IPv4.

Where do you change the APN? I don't see the option to do so.

Sim & network, click on your sim, access point name, click the one you're using and scroll down to just about the bottom.

I see - I can't seem to be able to edit any of the options there. Should I add a new APN with the same info but set to IPv4?

You could try a new one, sure.

Friend also has the OP5 on the same network with the same settings as me and his works fine.

Actually it connects to my tablet just fine... But won't connect to my laptop.

It started working suddenly - not exactly sure what caused the problem in the first place.

I am Naphtaline, owning a Sony Xperia XZ Premium and we are experiencing some of your issues there too.
It looks-like the problem could be related to Snapdragon 835 or Android Nougat but we can't be sure yet.
While our problem are not always exactly the same as you, we can say that it could be possible that there are Wifi issues on every snapdragon 835 based device yet on the market.
So, I made a survey to help us understanding this problem. We could then send the results to our brands to help them resolve it.

Hmm, turns out after trying again for a more extended period of time the connectivity dropped back to Connected, No Internet. It's still an issue for me. I'll try adding a new APN today and testing more.

I have an OP5 and was having the same issues. I could connect to the hotspot but nothing outside of that network. I added the new APN directly from the first post, , rebooted, and I now have hotspot internet access (this post was posted through it).

You know I just going to blame Android 7.0 Nougat any chance we can have a CyanogenMod 13 6.01 based foxfi friendly ROM ?
