Wifi still iffy - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

Verizon S7edge just got an update to deal with wifi problems. Haven't seen a thread here lately, is everyone doing OK with theirs? My wifi will randomly disconnect from my tried and true wireless router.

I have noticed in and out WiFi over the last few days.

T-Mobile here and seems to be fine.

Wi-Fi for my wife and me has been pretty spotty too. Just been sticking to cellular data for the time being.

Wifi data also seems slow.

WiFi for me is very slow. On my Nexus 7 2013 I get 80-90mbps but on my S7e I get 20-30mbps on the same WiFi and same server. I've tried everything and nothing fixes it.

I had the same problem but found something in the forums that said creating a new APN but using IPv4 instead of IPv6. My wifi went from 15mbps to 86mbps. Hopefully, it's legit and I keep getting these speeds.

Do you happen to have the specific link or the settings handy?

I don't remember where I found it but copy everything from your existing APN settings and set a new one up exactly the same way but use IPv4 instead of where it says IPv6. Everything else stays the same.
Thus far, my speeds have been consistently much faster.

I'll try it out tomorrow and hopefully it fares better.

Yeah WiFi is iffy for me too. I thought I was the only one.

Nope you're not the only one. My wifi turns itself off periodically after the update. Really annoying, and still happens even after a factory reset.

Just an fyi, the apn only affects mobile data, not wifi.

Just a thought, is there a way to specify which band the wi-fi is using? 2.4GHz vs 5GHz

Hey guys,
I've been having a nightmare with this. I'm on T-Mobile, and my S7 Edge is smooth, but when connected to my Netgear C6300 modem/router through Time Warner Cable no Google Services work. Youtube, Gmail, Play Store, Google Maps, etc.
I've scoured the forums and the only thing that works is the following:
1. Turn off WiFi, go to Play Store and download DNSet.
2. After it installs, turn on your WiFi and run DNSet.
That solved all my problems. My speeds were always perfect.
The other way to do this is to ROOT the phone and point the DNS Servers to Google's Servers:
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
DNSet does this without rooting. This is a IPv6 problem. TWC say they are IPv6 compatible but run the test online, all the IPv6 tests fail.
I am curious.. what is the root cause of this? Every other device with that modem on WiFi works. Galaxy S6, iPad3, iPad Mini, my freaking fridget, thermostat, computers, Mac Book Air... just this S7 Edge.
I'm a developer, but my knowledge with networking very limited. So any experience/info on this would be greatly appreciate it.
PS: Every time I disconnect from my WiFi, I Force Stop DNSet to turn it off; the app doesn't provide a "Quit" option :/
Hope this helps some of you.

Quick update.
Today, T-Mobile released an OTA update for Marshmellow v6.01
The new update fixed the WiFi issues I was having specifically when connected to my WiFi with Google Services: Play Store, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, basically anything Google.
So, if you are wary of using DNSet, then contact your cell phone provider and let them know. If your cell phone provider won't admit to having any problems, then you will need to wait for an upgrade.
Hope this helps

Tethering on Unlimited Plan with Atrix

I've seen this question asked a few times, and I just wanted to let everyone know that it seems to work just fine. I got this phone yesterday, and I tried turning on tethering. I got a status update in the notification area saying my plan didn't support the feature, so I created a custom APN using standard AT&T settings, and I tried again, and sure enough, it fired right up and I had two other devices sucking down data in no time. I bought the Inspire 4G last week, and it also worked with the custom APN, just like my Nexus One out of the box.
Just thought everyone would like to know.
Chris
how the heck did you get it yesterday, heck I work in a store and we dont even have a demo yet
pdanet is also a great app you can get that should allow it to do that as well without changing system settings, all you have to do is check usb debugging

Sorry, I didn't think about it. Here is a step by step:
Menu - Settings - Wireless & NetworksMobile Networks - Access Point Names - Menu - New APN, Enter these settings:
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1

APN Type: leave blank
Menu - Save, then select New APN (AT&T) You should see a green dot next to it, and it should be labeled under AT&T as wap.cingular. Go back to home screen and check internet connection is active. Once you verified internet is working, power off phone, then power on. Phone should still have active internet connection, if it does, you are done!

So you're saying I don't need to root in order to allow for tethering at no extra cost? Am I reading this right?! When I get mine on Monday I was planning on rooting it for the sole purpose of tethering to my iPad like I currently do with my jail broken iPhone using MyWi. I have unlimited as well.
good question Joelpatrick, I wanna know the same.

This method did not work for me my friend. It hangs up at Setting up Data Link. I put everything exactly as you said. And nothing. I do have an active data connection at the moment so I know I did everything right.
Edit: I changed the Port to 80 and everything went by smooth.
AT&T Exclusive Content
This is great info. Will also likely help when hopefully new ROM's are built. There are websites that offer exclusive content for AT&T subscribers, and when I've flashed on past phones, I'd lose that access. However, I found that making changes like this would bring it all back.
Great work!
holy crap. Free Hotspot. I did this and enabled hotspot and connecte with my computer asap. It worked.
Awesome! Thanks for the how-to.
What Speed are you guys getting?
I love loopholes, your awesome.
I can't wait to test this out once I get my Atrix
I'm curious to know if this will also bypass the requirement for the tethering plan with Webtop use...
I'd actually be hoping this works without them being able to notice, so that they don't voluntarily slap one of their tethering packages onto your plan and then you'd be kissing your unlimited data plan goodbye...
Does this work with the laptop dock?
Tried the settings with the laptop dock and couldnt get firefox to load. Should this work with the laptop dock?
Can not select hotspot after this fix
Can someone help with this, Noob to android. Thanks

[Q] anyone encountered ipv6 problem?

Hello guys, sorry for my improving English.
I use a router running shibby's tomato firmware and using HE.net's IPV6 tunnel. When my Nexus 4 running 4.2.2, everything was OK. But after it install the 4.3 update, I found it losing IPV6 connection. When connect to WiFi, it goes fine at first, and some times later (e.g. 1 hour or so), when connect to a IPV6 site (e.g. ipv6.google.com), it keeps waiting for network. At this time, if I open the router's web page using it's WAN IPV6 IP, it works and ipv6.google.com opens. After a longer time (when I wake up in the morning), it can connect to no IPV6 hosts, even try to connect to my router using it's IPV6 link-local address (fe80:.........).
I flashed back to 4.2.2 and everything works again. My desktop and other devices works fine.
When I enabled LTE on my phone, I followed the instructions exactly, which said to enable IPv4/6 on your APN settings. When I did this my phone behaved normally, except Facebook stopped being able to load certain content such as pictures.
After researching for a bit and even discovering that I couldn't go to facebook.com in Chrome on my phone, I realized it was IPv6.
I have since shut it off and my phone is behaving normally now.
I suggest you just go into your APN settings and select IPv4 only. T-Mobile is apparently ready, but a lot of other providers (such as Facebook) aren't.

facebook claims its ready, but ive noticed that they have issues. until about a month ago, i had issues posting photos from their website via my n4, now it works(most the time). try changing the user agent of your browser to desktop.

Tmobile unofficial tethering

So I think I got free tethering to work on my MG with tmobile $30 prepaid plan by changing the APN, but not 100% sure if I got the process down correctly since I've been tinkering, rooted and still on 4.3.
Anyways, maybe you guys can give a try and see if it works. This is aimed towards t-mobile users who don't have hotspot as part of their plan or have already exhausted their monthy tethering limit.
steps:
- go to settings > More....> mobile networks > Access Point names
- add a new APN by hitting the "+" sign
- Set "Name" to what ever you'd like (e.g. Hotspot4life)
- Set "APN" to fast.t-mobile.com
- Set "APN protocol" to IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4
- Leave everything else untouched
- hit menu button then select save
- Select the APN just created.
- Active native tethering (assuming you've adjusted ID and password already to your liking)
- If it works, go back into settings and select old APN... and check if tethering has been blocked.
Note: there's no need to reboot when switching APNs.
If it doesn't work, then a file change I did beforehand while rooted made a difference or something else was a factor.

t mobile and Three use Packet Sniffing to check the file headers to detect tethering. If you tether an iOS device or an OSX device to your phone, often they will not get flagged and the tethering will work. If you use a Windows PC or other device it will be detected immediately. I mention this, as it could be a factor if you tried tethering with an ipad or something and got it to work. Messing with the APN on Three has no effect, so I'd be surprised if it works with T Mobile.
Thanks for the tip! I found that this works, but unreliably on my Moto G.
I just got a MG last week and was frustrated to find tethering would not work at all out of the box. I stumbled across your post and made the changes you recommended and it worked very well at first - for maybe15 minutes or so. Then I noticed my Chromebook lost connection and upon further diagnosis it was the Moto G that lost connection to the T-Mobile network. I tried to turn of tethering, but that didn't help and I finally had to reboot the phone to get it back on the network. I switched back to the default APN and the phone worked reliably again, but obviously not tethering. In the past couple days I've tried the new APN with your settings a few times and get similar results - it works for a while, but then the phone loses cell connectivity. I've since found that I toggling Airplane Mode on and off will restart the cell connection and tethering will also start working again, so it kind of works but not as well as it should.
I've been doing more searching regarding the fast.t-mobile.com APN and other threads seem to indicate that APN is specifically for LTE phones. Since the Moto G doesn't have an LTE chip, I wonder if that's causing the reliability problem?
Brandon
PS - I think there might be a typo in your instructions and fast.t-tmobile.com should be fast.t-mobile.com - with just 1 t in the t-mobile. Thanks again!

You're right. I've fixed it. Thanks.
I rarely tether, so I haven't used it in every scenario. But when I do tether, its while tethering to my tablet, my friend's phone, or desktop/laptop WITH user agent switcher on Chrome to mask the desktop/laptop as a mobile device. After reading your post, I tethered to my laptop for an hour and did not encounter any issues. Do you lose connectivity even when the phone's signal strength is strong? Have you tried tethering to a different device (mobile)?
Thanks for the follow up. I've been trying it again today from my home where I get better cellular signal strength, but I'm getting similar results. It connects up and runs for 15-30 minutes and then starts flaking out. After rebooting both the phone and Chromebook, the Chromebook kept trying to go to a T-Mobile sign-in page, but couldn't even load that. And I too am using a Chrome extension to change the user agent to Android. The Moto G seems to be working fine and not losing it's connection this time.
I have also been able to test tethering on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.2 today and the Chromebook is connecting just fine and staying connected - no problems at all. I compared the APN settings between the 2 phones and the Nexus has the MMSC entry filled out (which xda won't allow me to post here because i'm too new), so I added that into the Moto G, but it did not help. Darn. I really like the Moto G, but really need reliable tethering. Thanks again...

You need install a User Agent String changer addon in your browser and change the string.
I use this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...r-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg?hl=en-US
I have instructions for another device here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201062
Good luck.
Thanks for the recommendation! Sorry I didn't make it more clear in my reply above, but I am using a user agent switcher - currently the Ultimate User Agent Switcher. Just to be sure, I disabled that extension and installed the User-Agent Switcher for Chrome that you linked to, but unfortunately I'm getting the same result - the Chromebook takes forever and keeps trying to connect to the "Welcome to T-Mobile" page.
And I tried again with the Nexus 4 and the Chromebook connects up immediately and runs great - no T-Mobile page or any other problems. I did a little more research and found a post on the Nexus 4 forum recommending disabling IPV6 in the APN Protocol, so I switched both phones from IPV6/IPV4 to just IPV4 and am getting the same result on each. Both phones work fine on the cell network and Internet, but the Chromebook only tethers successfully to the Nexus 4.

You need to set the Firefox string in my thread. That is the only desktop browser string that works. The reason why Chromebook/Ipad/Ipod devices work is because T-Mobile allows those devices since they can all have Cellular radios in them for radio. It would block legit paying customers.
Hey - thanks for the quick follow up!
Unfortunately, I just tried all 3 of the Firefox settings in the user agent switcher and rebooted the Chromebook each time, but no joy - each time after restarting and connecting to the Moto G wi-fi hotspot the Chromebook just tries to redirect me to the T-Mobile site.

Do you have the T-Mobile branded Moto G? If so you may need to disable the upsell app as I did in my L9 thread. You may also need to edit /etc/apns-conf.xml
Also, use this app instead of the builtin tethering. It may be notifying the carrier of tethering.
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Thanks again for more suggestions.
I am using an unlocked US GSM model of Moto G I purchased from Amazon.
I have not rooted yet, but may try that and the tethering app you linked to. I'm wondering if the stock app included on the Motorola device is the culprit, whereas the stock tethering app on the Nexus device may not be reporting back...

MetroPCS (T-Mobile) Tethering Issue

Is anyone else having tethering issues on MetroPCS or Tmobile with the MXP? I have tried applying various apn tweaks but I always experience DNS issues on the tethered devices. My device is bootloader unlocked and rooted if that even matters.

I am in the same situation and it sucks not being able to tether on metroPCS specially since my service plan of $60 offers free mobile hotspot up to 6GB to teher. The phone has potential but in the end I might have to return it if no tethering options are available.

Have you tried going to the store to get their information on this? I'm about to get this phone on t-mobile amd I hope this can be fixed, did you buy the phone at motorolas site? Because I seen the option to add your carrier sim with the phone if that even makes a difference as im assuming it doesn't, but maybe it has something to do with the imei not being registered to the network so I think you should stop by a store
I have not had any issues tethering with T-Mobile. Not rooted and bootloader is virgin locked.

Are you getting an error when turning on Hotspot, or just when a device connects it cant hit the internet. Its 2 different issues, but both are fixable.

Had to dig deep in the adb logcat to find the issue, the problem is DNS routing when using tethering . For tethering to work I had to use Wifi Tether Router.
Change the following for tethering to work:
Interface: wlan0
Method: Native tether
DHCP Settings : DNS Redirect checked
Redirect DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4

Also you may need to change your APN to use IPv4 and not IPv6.
The issue is the hidden tethering APN. T-Mobile is the only one that does this that I know of.

No problem man. Can you let me know if your tether data is showing up in your data usage. Mine doesnt show up at all , maybe since its bypassing tmobile's DNS servers.
In case this helps any Metro PCS (who else does Hotspot for free?? Nice). I was so upset that I couldn't hotspot that I rooted and tried the WiFi Tether Router app and settings above (had used before on Sprint with success). Nothing worked.. I uninstalled and tried a few simpler things: I just modified the APN by adding 'dun' to the APN type line, and changed APN protocol to IPv4. Works great at LTE speeds. I don't think using then deleting WiFi Tether Router left some beneficial settings somewhere deeper; anyone know?
I have the same issue. A reboot fixes it for a short time only. I posted this on Moto forum and other people have having an issue. I know it's the phone because I put the sim back to my OPO and I can tether fine with it. I call t-mobile to verify that Hotspot feature is turn on. It's very annoying having to reboot again and again to use hotspot.
MetroPCS blocks ALL tethering for non-MetroPCS devices. That said, I have been tethering with MetroPCS since Day 1 using this guide:
http://pocketnow.com/2015/01/01/nexus-6-tethering
Summary:
Add tether_dun_required=0 to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db using a SQL Editor.
Change APN to IPv4

I use the app but my WiFi is messed up after I turn off the tether. Have to reboot to resolve issue.
same problem here,i use simple mobile and computer connect to wifi but data is not transfering,i found that happens when lte when i have h+ or 2g tether ok...anybody know how to fix this ,i have no problem with asus zenfone 2
with 3 different roms, all I've needed to get fast LTE tethering is basically using IPv4 and adding 'dun'...
(all others "Not set")...
APN: fast.metropcs.com
MMSC: http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MMC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: default,supl,mms,dun
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4

No Internet with WiFi Hotspot

Is anyone else having issues with using the WiFi hotspot on the OP5? When I connect my latptop to the hotspot it says connected but no internet - I'm using stock OOS on T-Mobile.
EDIT: The solution I found was through this website: https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/bypass-t-mobiles-tethering-limit-for-free-0161404/ . Adding a new APN with these settings fixed my issue:
Name: T-Mobile US LTE
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: default,supl,mms,dun
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4

Try changing apn to IPv4 instead of IPv6.
I have the same problem and my apn is set to IPv4.
Where do you change the APN? I don't see the option to do so.

Sim & network, click on your sim, access point name, click the one you're using and scroll down to just about the bottom.
I see - I can't seem to be able to edit any of the options there. Should I add a new APN with the same info but set to IPv4?
You could try a new one, sure.

Actually it connects to my tablet just fine... But won't connect to my laptop.
It started working suddenly - not exactly sure what caused the problem in the first place.
Hello !
I am Naphtaline, owning a Sony Xperia XZ Premium and we are experiencing some of your issues there too.
It looks-like the problem could be related to Snapdragon 835 or Android Nougat but we can't be sure yet.
While our problem are not always exactly the same as you, we can say that it could be possible that there are Wifi issues on every snapdragon 835 based device yet on the market.
So, I made a survey to help us understanding this problem. We could then send the results to our brands to help them resolve it.
Please share this link to every people you know owning a flagship device, even if they don't experience the issue. This is very important !
If there are moderators here, if you could make a pinned topic about this survey, this would be marvelous !

Thank you !
Hmm, turns out after trying again for a more extended period of time the connectivity dropped back to Connected, No Internet. It's still an issue for me. I'll try adding a new APN today and testing more.
thank you
I have an OP5 and was having the same issues. I could connect to the hotspot but nothing outside of that network. I added the new APN directly from the first post, , rebooted, and I now have hotspot internet access (this post was posted through it).
You know I just going to blame Android 7.0 Nougat any chance we can have a CyanogenMod 13 6.01 based foxfi friendly ROM ?
