Nexus S overclocks. - Nexus S General

I'm interested to know the overclocks that everyone gets and what kernel/roms they are using.
I'm using Cyanogenmod 7 RC1, Netarchy 1.2.4 CFS. At 1.2 Ghz atm.

Well my signature down below is what im currently using.
I tried to up the speed to 1.3ghz and it worked fine but i had one random reboot, and so i just decided to go back to 1.2ghz.
No problems at all so far.
Edit - its the 1.2.4 cfs version of netarchy by the way!
Sent from my Nexus S (Bionix 1.3 - netarchy kernel 1.2 ghz)

1.3GHz STABLE with CM7 and Netarchy 1.2.4 CFS

CM7 RC1
Netarchy 1.2.3 BFS
1.4 GHZ
Stability? - I'll get back to you on that after a few more days of usage.

its a shame some phone tolerate higher overclocks better than others

It's natural though, it's the same with overclocking pc processors - some handle higher speeds and that's that XD

I'm running CM7 RC1 with Netarchy 1.2.4 CFS
@ 1.2ghz stable, I can't hit anything higher though.

1.3ghz with nightly #1 and netarchy 1.2.4 bfs rock stable

i use a bunch of different kernels, mostly different trinity kernels(released and test kernels) and netarchys kernels. my ns can run stablely at 1.6ghz, and even run 1.7ghz but not very stable. that said, i mostly use 1.2 through 1.5ghz for daily use(almost exclusively with cyanogenmod). 1.6ghz and 1.7ghz i save for benchmarking, they are not that great on battery life as you can imagine

Opinions vary on that. O/C'ing these phones has no real purpose other than as a geek factor. There's nothing I've installed on my phone that pushes the default clock speed on these hummingbirds.
With that said, I can run at 1.3 and remain stable. Just no reason to and the negative potential impact, instability and more importantly accelerating the death of the CPU, presents more reasons not to O/C than there are to do so.
Opinion yes, but if someone has an app they use that doesn't run well at stock, but does when overclocking, I'd love to hear it and try that scenario out.

100% correct.
Developers, give me better apps/games so I can actually use the device's potential. Until then, everyone else can have their wet dreams about getting a dual core phone.

its not enabled by default(in stock), but is enabled in some custom roms, like cm7.

its weird, before netarchy instituted the safeboot at 1ghz feature in his kernels i would just get boot loops but after boot i can overclock it as i please .
im not really complaining either way i just think its funny

Not to mention, my highest quadrant scores (1600ish) come from the ROM that feels the least smooth overall for me. I'm using virt 2.6 right now and I get around 1400 on the first pass and it is the smoothest (scrolling, previews, in general not lagging when I try to do something) sense ROM I have used. God knows I've used them all at one point or another.
i got a 2200 quadrant and 90 mflops(on the older version of linpack) running jdfroyo, and i was overclocked to 2ghz.

Regardless of quadrant score, Ruby is the quickest rom I've used, and I've tried them all.

I happen to agree. Its blazing fast. Still needs some things for me to be able to switch over to it, but I wouldn't mind going full time on a vanilla ROM.
The smoothest sense ROM Ive used is Virtuous, but the more feature packed roms like SR and CM have more stuff than I need.

Why do people place so much emphasis on Quadrant scores? Sounds like you're trying to compensate for something...
I'm getting 1300ish and my phone feels very snappy and quick. This is on Virtuous 2.6 and using the custom Virtuous kernel running @ 998 mhz.
Sounds like people turned this into a pissing contest, just like 3DMark on PCs. The one with the highest score doesn't necessarily feel the best, nor is it the most reliable. If you want the highest quadrant score, mod your phone by having a liquid nitrogen cooled CPU and figure out how to OC that sucker by 100% or more. I'm sure you'll be the envy of all your friends, even though they will be the ones who are actually able to use their phones for what they were meant for.
I'm running Ruby 1.1.1 and I get around 1350 which is about 150 less than what I was getting with stock froyo with KingKernel 1 overclocked to 1.15, but Ruby runs smoother and faster for me which will always matter more than a dumb benchmark number
Running virtuous 2.6 with KingxKernel BFS #4 gets me 1637 @ 1.19GHz, one of my friend gets 1693.

I believe I read somewhere that they were gonna do a captivate specific ROM via bionix. Pretty sure it is for 2.1, linpack is @12 MFLOPS and open GL site shows it on 2.1.-impressive? Yes . Can't say that I wouldnt take it for a spin though. Hopefully 2.2 will soon follow

if you read the current setup required for that 3k+ quadrant score, he said he was running OCLF, so drop between 500-700 points just for that to get a more realistic voodoo score. it's impressive, don't get me wrong, but it isn't as astounding because a lot of that score is still from OCLF (hell you can get 2500 with 1.2GHz and OCLF)...
as for a *STABLE* 1.6 GHz OC, I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah my phone doesn't run well with a simple 1.2 GHz OC... so I'm skeptical of a stable 1.6 OC kernel.
Quadrant is just terrible. Any comparison scores should be taken using Advanced with the I/O test subtracted. But, even then, it only scores Qualcomm MSM processors "correctly."

It also gets 78fps in neocore versus ~55fps stock and it removes the fps cap. Issues with 1.2ghz seem to be due to undervolting rather than overclocking to 1.2ghz. In my experience it has worked fine at 1.2ghz without undervolt.

yes, but I never questioned the FPS cap, I have no idea what affects that so I can't question it. besides, it's not like our eyes can see much more than 30 FPS, so the difference between 60 FPS and 78 FPS means little to me (in day to day usage). also, I never said anything about undervolting either or made a comment about the 1.2 GHz overclock. Mine runs fine with a 1.2 GHz overclock and the hummingbird processor has already been theorized to be stable up to 1.6 GHz, so this isn't really news, just the first time someone is advertising it as fully implemented. and, what stable means, is it runs across all the devices without things like the "sleep of death" effect occuring (which still happened for SOME with the 1.2 GHz OC).
so until I can personally see 1.6 GHz on my phone without any ill effects on battery life (which should only be minimal if the CPU is being scaled dynamically) or sleep death effects, I won't make a judgment... which is what I already said
This is awesome though! Woot woot!

Will hopefully find out soon a dl link for the vibrant ROM is in new thread "Manhattan project." Viral black posted that they have a Captivate but will try to port to every sgs variant possible. Captivate will be 2nd I would suppose. Sombionix did say they were working on a 2.2 ROM, so hopefully this will meet froyo in the not so distant future. It seemed to be working well from the posts that I read. Then again it is still early.

Changed kernel HZ to 1000 for buttery-smoothness and not much increased battery drain. Not like you'd worry about that on an overclocked kernel, right?
Compiled with Codesourcery's ARM-EABI 2010.09 Toolchain for more buttery-smoothness. How much more can it take?!
Looking forward to see where this goes!
Edit: I can only assume this is I9000 based bc all of the ROMS myself and others build are also I9000 based. Is that an appropriate assumption?

So this is oc to 1400 and can not be adjusted using voltage control, just run with it

Sounds about right!
How does battery life with this kernel compare to the battery life of stock cm7 nightlies, or the battery life with TheEscapists OC-UV kernel?
So I'm a little curious.. how would you set what OC you want? Would you just set it to 1.3 or 1.4Ghz and not mess with UV settings at all?

You can set the CPU governor in SetCPU, as long as you don't set the frequencies.

For some reason everything is choppy after a boot but before you turn the screen off and on. Also, voodoo sound is 100% there, have you run the app?

edit
Will give this a go tomorrow
MIUI
oooh. ill flash right now on cm7 and let you know

I am liking this kernel.
OC'd to 1.4ghz and ran linpack for the hell of it.
19.5 MFLOPS. Most I've ever seen on my phone. :|
CM7 + Trident ftw
lol I got mflops of 26.5 the other day on the last Trident build
Sent from my SGH-I897
26.5 how? That sounds unbelievable lol.
it was random. I was getting 20 steady. if you look on the top captivate scores it would have been the fourth or fifth highest lol

ya I have never run my phone at 1.4 but thats the only thing that makes MIUI not really choppy.
But it really has payed off its 100% stable for me and the fastest my phones ever been. Getting about 19.5-20 in Linpack, and just overall the phone flies.
So heres my equation for success:
MIUI B6+Trident FTW

I am currently running miui at 800 and I do not find it choppy at all
MIUI
steady linpack of 19.5, slightly lower than my average on #30. get this, quadrant score of 2475 first run
Sent from my SGH-I897
oh and two questions for you, ytt3r. first, what's the kernel Hz values at? and what's the voltage for 100mhz, 850?

Did neldar finally port BLN to Gingerbread/Nexus S?
Not sure if it's just me..
but it appears this only lets my CPU scale down to 1ghz.
I cannot get it to change at all.
My phone freezes on quadrent standards lol

the CM CPU adjuster I've noticed does that.. I use SETCPU. and it works fine if you have the latest version and don't use set on boot

[Q] Low Quadrant Scores

I know that this tool isn't a good indicator of performance... but when I see other people with the EVO getting 1200+ and I am at 800-900, I am starting to wonder if there is a setting wrong. My phone occasionally feels sluggish. Any idea's what the cause could be? using an AOSP rom with Tiamat Kernel
- Just realized I wasn't in Q&A forums Sorry! - please delete if needed

new quad you will get low scores
imho quad and all the other benchmark test mean nothing

I agree when comparing to other phones... but 2 phones of the same model should get similar scores right?

Have you ran it off of a fresh reboot?
I find my best scores were when I rebooted let it sit for 3-5 min after reboot, and then fire it up.

Trying it again after the phones been on a few minutes.
I used to use SETCPU and I thought maybe that screwed things up
If you want to increase scores why don't you put your Max frequency at 1190 and min at 1190 with setcpu. High scores are a thing of the past.

That is with my CPU at 1190. I am not trying to get a high score, but a score my phone should be able to get, you know? I see someone with an EVO get 1500 and then I am thinking something is wrong with my phone... I have the same phone..

Putting stock in scores is foolish though. 936 does seem a Tad bit low for sure. My set up is cm7 #36, tiamat kernel 3.3.5, JIT on, setcpu 1113 Max, 422 min smartass governor. I just ran a linpack and got 37mflops and 1200 in benchmark. This is the same set up I usually run on any rom or kernel. I try not to clock so high because it just drains battery. My evo actually can perform flawlessly clocked at even 998mhz. The only thing I notice different is that scores change and I don't really take a performance hit. Underclocking is the new overclocking lol. My last suggestion would be to play around with different kernels to achieve what you desire. Try savage zen!
Edit: just ran these 2 test just for you right now. Same results and I'm using same kernel you are.

Run, it once, and then run it again right after w/out quitting. The if you run it multiple times (at least on my phone), all subsequent scores are on par with the second one which is usually 1-300 more than the first. Won't mean anything any different, but at least you might get some higher scores.
Also, you might need to try some different kernel combinations as well as different clock speeds. Mine usually does fine at 998 sometimes even at 921, but if I go too high it will start to slow things down. If you're not getting good results at 1190, try backing it off one setting at a time and see if you can get improved scores.
As far as comparing to other phones, even of the same make/model, you can't really do that. As long as they're in the same ball park, within a couple hundred, you're probably OK. Every phone reacts differently.
It also depends on the version of quadrant. You def can't compare diff phones running diff versions. I usually don't use it to compare to other phones, just diff setups on my phone. I know if I'm getting 1200 avg and then I all of the sudden flash a ROM and kernel and can't break 800 that something is probably wrong.
The most important thing is how the phone feels though. The fact that you say it feels sluggish leads me to believe you might need to try a diff kernel or see if something is eating up your CPU. Also, when you're over clocking, the min clock speed can effect your scores just as much as the max speed.
Ya give savage a go.
Kernel CPU setting:
Ondemand governor
Min 245
Max 998
My Device scores high runs smooth battery drain not a problem.
I just tested mine and got 1326. With these settings.. CM7 Nightly 36 with 2.6.37.6-Tiamat -v3.3.5 kernal.
Governor - Conservative
Min - 384
Max 1036
