Superuser - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is likely a dumb question, but for ****s and giggles I installed avg free and ran a virus scan. The scan said superuser is malicious. My phone is rooted and superuser is installed. Why would superuser set off the virus software?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

How many known viruses are there for android? It's more likely that these programs are analyzing your apps to see what harm they *could* do based on the permissions those apps need. SuperUser can elevate privileges for any app - that could be pretty damaging if used improperly.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Droid X File Manager vs Astro

I was considering ditching my old stock Droid X "File Manager" app for Astro, but I'm hesitant to do so since the market doesn't have the generic stock one for me to redownload. I discussed this in another thread of mine and the guy that responded said with Titanium backup on my phone Astro is kind of useless. I'm not 100% sure of that. Any thoughts?

Just install Astro and if you don't like it delete it...It doesn't hurt to have both

I already installed Astro once and liked certain things about it, but the stock file manager has something called "Shared Folders". I was afraid that uninstalling it might mess up the "Media Share" app since Astro doesn't have that particular feature. Other than that I think Astro is more expansive and runs much more smoothly. Does uninstalling the stock file manager mess up Media Share?

Well I guess the OCD in me want my phone to be as "clean" as possible. I hate for apps I don't use to be running in the background and I hate running multiple apps that do the same thing (like "Social Networking" vs Tweetdeck"). Anyway, I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Uh freeze the apps with titanium backup, esp sys apps, then you don't have to worry about trying to reinstall them if they cause malfunctions...

Nevermind about Astro. I paid for "Root Explorer" last night and I'm pretty darn sure it's superior to any other file manager that I've seen. Also, I renamed the stock File Manager app to ".bak" by using Root Explorer, so now I don't have to worry about reinstalling it if I wanna use it again. I wish I'd done that with all the apps I've uninstalled in the past.... :-(

+1 for Root Explorer.
Root Explorer is by far the best with functionality. You can also get Explorer, which is the free version of it.
Root explorer is MILES ahead of all others hands down.

I just put root explorer on my wifes dinc and it is definitely the best one out there. I just hope she is careful with it lol

Need to give root explorer a look
Yeah man. Root Explorer = WIN
It makes the stock File Manager and Astro look useless. Lol.

"Sending..."

Had anyone noticed this on their SGN? It pops up about twice an hour on mine. I had the Google data collection disabled when I set my phone up so I am not sure what's causing this. I never notice this on my previous android phones. I just hope it's not some rogue app trying to sneak out my infos....

Hi,
The only input I can give on this is that I too have noticed this only however upon a fresh install and don't seem to see if afterwards. I do disable certain system apps and so maybe the reason I don't see if is because I have disabled whatever is responsible for it or just coincidence.
I'm just about to flash a new rom, Rocket V17 to Cassies ExtraLite V6 and so I'll post if I see the same.
I noticed this with stock KKA, KL7, KL8 and now on LA1 as well....
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I flashed Cassie's XtraLiteRom LA3 rom and haven't seen it yet, usually I have by now. All my apps have been restored too, so perhaps it was being shown by a system app that's been cleaned out from this rom. Not sure which one though if this is the case
Thats great, I think it's a system app. I hope somebody can help pin-point the culprit.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
One way to find out the culprit would perhaps be by using LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market:
LBE Privacy Guard
Once installed on a rooted system, anything that wants to connect to the internet must seeks its permission first. Anything that seems suspect, deny access. Obviously be careful with what you are restricting though, but this should help...
I'd use this method myself but after flashing Cassie's I no longer have the "sending" popup.
Hope this helps!
Thanks mate, I'll give it a go.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Another option is to install DROIDwall and check the log file to see what app is blocked.
+1 on LBE!
First app that gets installed on my device when I wipe, install a new rom, or start up a brand new phone. Also has a side benefit, if the app doesn't need data access, to help block in app ads
Most apps have no business accessing my location, my sms app, contacts etc.

Check what apps you have installed, i don't think it's a virus, I think it's just spam from a app or game you have installed, uninstall all apps for a while and see if it persists, if it doesnt, reinstall app by app and narrow it down to which app, then report that app.
Just install "Addons Detector" from the Play Store and it will get you sorted.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
In jelly bean you are able to open see what app is displaying the notification and stop the app doing it
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Hold down on the notification until a little box pops up that says "app info". Tap that, that's your rouge app, delete it and hope that's the only one.
What it is is a app has as built in. What you should door is install Air blocker, and try to detect air push. It will show the app that is causing it, and un-install that app.
Good luck!!!

You can also install lookout mobile security from the market. It is free and works great for deleting bad applications as well as any viruses.

Just fyi, android doesn't have viruses. It will always be a rogue app.
Rogue app?
Nexus 7 of HELLBoy
Android has viruses, assuming it doesn't is just like assuming apple computers don't have viruses, there are not as MANY as the windows PC environment but they do exist, and saying they don't exist lures people into a false sense of security.
Calling a virus a rogue app is just putting a shiny new name on the same thing, Rogue Application = Virus, Virus = Rogue Application, they are synonymous terms.
The really dangerous ones ask for root permissions on handsets where superuser capabilities are detected, but depending on what permissions you let them have when you first install the app, they can pretty much get access to everything, some can even target exploits on your build of android and perform their own rooting procedure.
Android. Has. Viruses.
But all systems have them, you just have to exercise caution when installing new applications.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think what he means by rouge app and doesn't get viruses is you don't get trojans by visiting web pages like you can on a PC or Mac. To get one you need a rouge app that installs the virus and it is from an app.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Ah, but you do, tojans are just viruses that appear to be one thing so they are loaded by unsuspecting people being socially engineered but then turn out to be viruses

Shell superuser permissions

Every once in a while I'll get a continuous message saying shell has been denied superuser permissions. It is rare but when it happens it slows down considerably it goes away with a reboot but i'm concerned with what could be causing it.

Are you using Super User or SuperSU (by ChainFire)? The old Super User app by ChainsDD is known to cause troubles like that...

I also sometimes get this, and the solution is the same, a reboot.
I have a feeling I may have booth SU and superuser installed!
Interested to know if anyone else has this problem.

Anti virus

Does anybody run a anti virus scanner on their phone.. if so which one...

I use Lookout sometimes
That said, as long as you check what permissions the apps you're installing are asking for, you're fine
I mean, an RPG game does not need access to your contacts or permissions to send SMS messages

I use Comodo which I also use on my home computer. It does a lot more than just scan apps. I love it and its free.

I use lookout and it works great for me. Scans everything i download and backs up contacts. Also has good locate and scream case you lose it and will save last location before your phone dies. But as Cnexus said being observant of what you download is your best protection. Hope this helps!

Not advocating piracy, but if you pirate apps that have been cracked then an AV is a good choice. But as the second post the best av is you paying attention to what the app accesses.

Watch the permissions when you install and steer clear of skecthy sources.
I use web root secure anywhere. It has turned up some Trojans in some ROMs which kind of blew me away. I thought everything on xda was safe.

Well to begin with, the fact that android is based on Linux makes it even harder to exploit because of the whole permissions structure
On top of that you have the Android app permissions system and you have something very difficult to exploit in itself....I've never gotten one, but I've heard of malicious apps getting released (on the play store) back in the baby stages of Android (when froyo was just out) that used the froyo rooting exploits to bypass security checks and mess with the stuff on your phone.
But other than that, I've never heard of a any virus/exploit/targeted attack on android devices
The latest Android virus that I know of is BadNews.. It hit a few apps a few days ago, in the google play store. I believe it infected something like 2 Million phones.
So saying "I just get them from Google Play store" doesn't keep you safe.. Because apps are not tested before they hit the play store, and most of the android virus hit via the play store.
And if you have never heard of a virus that targets the Android, it's because you haven't taken the time to actually see if any actually exist. Linux is not hard to exploit, and neither is Android.

Completely agree on that the best anti virus is yourself. I don't even use one on my computers because most viruses mask themselves as anti virus programs.

Android is based on Linux. And if you say Linux is not hard to exploit, I suggest you do some reading yourself.
