Thanks to US, XDA and Samsungjohn-••• - Vibrant General

Do you think Samsung FINALLY HEARD OUR VOICES and bent under the cloud of losing market share (what I think) or what. Thank you either way,
Please feel free to express your thoughts here about the recent release of the source code and SamgsungJohn---
Thanks to XDA for providing a conduit to samsung , and thanks to the staff for helping all of us in the forum address the poor treatment we received from Samsung.
Thanks to SamsungJohn (albeit way late) reaching out to us, and at least acknowledging the superior development here is not a threat but an asset.
Thanks to all the people here pulling together to pressure a Big Corporation to respond to our calls to release the open source code (as required by the open source licensing agreement)
Thanks- ALL

The thing is, how can a major company like Samsung, take so many missteps?? Things like this is what they should have done in the beginning. They're slowing correcting their mistakes, but it certainly wont be forgotten. (I never had a Behold 2 so I do not know of that fiasco)

behold2 wasnt really a fiasco unless you were an impulse buyer.
if you did your homework before making a purchase you never would have bought one..

Was source released because of SamsungJohn? I missed that part.
I didn't think SamsungJohn actually did anything and then he just went away when we asked him questions.
It was also my understanding that source was released because they were obligated to - not because they wanted to show us some love.
Is there some information somewhere I'm missing?

What about us that don't subscribe to.twitter? Could you fill us in?

I honestly give NO credit to @samsungjohn.... he came to XDA made some threads and asked for feedback (multiple times), but what has he really done? Nothing.... He tweeted about source being released, but so did a LOT of people on my timeline.

I agree that I don't think this was SamsungJohn's doing. However we need to give the guy some slack. He may not have approached things in the best way. But he is still learning and hopefully will come up with a good way to be the liaison between community and Samsung.

samsungjohn is the face of samsung trying to make up for what everyone has been *****ing about for so long.
why are all of you ****ting on him?
i doubt it was one man that said "ok lol give them source kekeke" but he's the one that is trying to mend all the wounds with the SGS device owners that post on XDA. i can only assume the first attempt went wrong as the thread is deleted now.
i would imagine it looked smiliar to the SGS/Tmobile facebook fan pages where anytime anything is posted, it ends up with 5000 people saying "**** you samsung/tmobile where is my froyo" by a bunch of idiots that wouldnt know the difference between 2.2 and 1.6, other than the number is 0.6 higher.
a lot of you guys are being ****ing crybabies now, even though the devs now have what they need to get 2.2 100% stable.
not to mention the fact we have a voice now that could get GB on our phones faster than ever.

Not totaly true at all. The forums had a lot of promise but samsung didn't deliever on promises. I checked that forum before I bought mine. There was a dev that did amazing work so I bought one. When he gave up so did I.
He was known as BHMan aka eugene373

Did you guys notice on his twitter feed that he is a Social Media Analyst (aka, how many people are pissed at us counter) /Developer (what has he developed?)...
How can you work in social media and not know how to Direct Message?? Did you guys see the tweets with @Supercurio.... John had completely forgotten all of the really useful information @supercurio had sent him, and has shown nothing he has developed.... he didn't even know how to DM??? REALLY???
Sorry, but if you are on the @SamsungJohn train, you WILL be sadly let down. He is just trying to help with the rage we threw at Samsung. All they had to do was release Froyo/Source in a reasonable time and NONE of this would have been an issue.
It's funny to me that you guys expect something to come from this guy, who just appeared, and has done absolutely nothing to date.

fine, be negative, lol, whatever you want.

^^ Right, but the point is, a lot of people did buy the phone..... and they got F'd by Samsung who did nothing to support that phone.
I'm not being negative when I say not to expect anything from this John guy. Source was released, that's all we needed. I'm all for having a Samsung person who is really going to help.... I just don't see this going anywhere right now. I would LOVE to be wrong. I also hope future updates/source are taken more seriously by Samsung. Too good of hardware to lose customers due to support.

I agree but that said, In the public foray It good to be polite and cordial...... even though my "inner child wants vengeance" I can play nice.......
My Real problem is all the other phone makers and carrier do not treat you really any better........ In my business if I treated people the way Samsung treated us..... I'd be homeless.......... that is reality...... too bad they have different rules to play by and we just get to be the ping-pong ball

Isn't Samsung obligated to release the source code to their enhancements under the GPL?
I understand why they might be averse to doing that... but if they have a problem with it then they should switch to different OS for their devices.
I guess I have problems congratulating a company on doing what they are supposed to do.

Maybe you should look at what happened to the PRI upgrade bounty in the Development section. I agree with the OP of that thread - bounties should be banned from XDA.

My humble opinion I would have to agree with silver. Bounties tend to cloud the focus of the overall objective and could lead to somewhat shady end results. In this case of froyo root believe me the devs have this as a top priority and bounties are not going to achieve a faster result. It would probably be best if one would donate to them now as it could lighten the load and burden now when it really counts.
This is counterproductive as much as you think your helping. Pretty soon nothing around here is ganna get done without a bounty, and the whole development thread is ganna be slowed to a halt with devs waiting for a bounty before they do any work. Plus Android isnt owned by anyone of us to claim a bounty for developing on, if you wanna make money through it, there are channels like through the market. Donations are for Churches/Charities so what you are basically doing is bribing people to do the work.

That was only one of a few root bounty threads. I personally completely derailed one of them (I'm not proud of myself) trying to make the same points that others have made in this thread, but they were much more eloquent here than I was there. I know its hard to believe, but I was a total ass in that thread.

Ya and what was that? The PRI fix? The whole point of rooting is to achieve the best possible tweak of code that gives us the best possible Android experience overall. The only logical step forward is to root froyo. If nothing more it might contain the ingredients for us to eventually root Gingerbread when we get it. Believe me rooting froyo is a top priority.

The unrevoked twitter feed hinted they were working on it this morning.
"You can expect another face on the wall of phones soon. 2.2 folks: stuff is coming
down the pipeline. Inc folks: use Forever before the OTA!"
http //twitter com/unrevoked/status/21474389447
If you want the unRevoked team to work on this and you want to help them out, then go to their site and donate to the EFF. If you really want to show your support, then donate NOW, not after they then find the hack. Anyone can donate AFTER but only those truly serious will show their support now. So go to their page and show you are serious and show your support.

Exactly. Unrevoked is the only one I've seen even hint towards it. I think, most of the hardcore devs got their device when it came out and have had root since 2.1, aren't willing to loose root and therefor development time for other projects, and probably don't want to spend a few hundred bucks to buy a cold unit out of contract to test with.
My suggestion: all you bounty guys chip in your milk money together, start buying devices and giving them as gifts of gratitude towards your favorite devs. Devs do this for fun on their own time and surely wouldn't mind having their name on the end-all-be-all-2.2-exploit, but probably don't want it bad enough to go blow a few hundred bucks on. My $0.02 anyway...

The whole challenge for a hacker is too hack something that has not been hacked. Pardon me but the last I heard 2.1 was hacked and now the PRI is fixed. Ya I confirmed that much...your welcome. Hackers don't go around babbling about what they are doing until they achieve it then make their mark.

Ever wonder if devs withhold stuff from the community?

This guy has been coming into the Fascinate channel for the last two days rubbing our face in it. While we aren't pleased, I can only imagine what the Epic folks must be thinking.

If someone doesn't want to leak something, cool, but don't brag about it and make others feel bad that they can't have it, imo.
Meh. The "whining about noobnl bragging about Froyo" thread is ========> this way.
This is Development, not General! </backseatmod>
Yeah yeah, he has froyo.. woop'd ****in do. We will all have it soon. Hopefully one of the devs who does have it, actually makes some progress in getting a root for it when release comes, otherwise stop being such a fricken baby about the ****. It is, what it is. The more we talk about it, the more they get their head blown up like a balloon thinking they are the froyo beta developer cool kids.
Just let it go.
Guys, Idgaf that he has it. This is just not what I consider to be behavior that fuels a community, but instead hinders it. I wouldn't have posted, had I known about the other thread prior.

For the leg humpers out there, the point is that it is not considered acceptable behavior to rub it into other people's faces.
Thats got nothing to do with bugs, or him doing anyone a favor.
Kind of reminds me of my kid with a new toy. Of course he wants you to see it, but he isn't gonna let you play with it for a while. If he acts that way, then of course he is burying himself in the long run. There will be plenty of developers for 2.2 when it gets here that are gonna do great things and that maybe he can't keep up with alone. Everyone wants their 15 min of fame.

I think Devs have one hand down their pants when they say stuff like this. Getting off on people giving them power.
Notice noobnl had to tweet to all the major android new sites with a screenshot. Sure he's holding it back for our good, but might as well get his name out there in the meantime right?
I've been through this with damage's shenanigans on the hero with 2.1. Its the same tired excuses.
Fact is the more eyes we have looking at the code, the more quickly it'll get to working status. It's about a community working together.

You are right about noobnl, absolutely, but wrong about the rom. Why would we even want a beta rom that can somehow be shoehorned on our device that is SEMI working when the real official release is happening within weeks? Sure he is doing it for attention and making a big show of having the rom and not releasing it, he did the same gloating nonsense when that Epic Experience thread was pulled and he posted about how the development scene wouldn't be **** without him.
But again, its senseless to release a semi functional rom. The person who leaked it to noobnl even said it was kinda buggy. We will get the legit one soon enough. Its good at least at this point that talented people like noobnl have access to it so they can make sure there is a root available for it on release day.
Let's clear some things up.
First: I have no comments to make about noobnl's behaviour regarding his having a copy of the froyo leak. I don't feel like throwing more kindle on the flames.
Second: Several devs have copies of the same froyo leak. Who they are is unimportant, but it's out there.
Third: Yes, the ROM is incredibly buggy. The modem crashes constantly, market downloads are intermittent (as well as missing protected apps). And even though it has JIT, things are laggy (most noticeable when scrolling the app drawer). As a kernel dev, I can't tell you the amount of frustration I have, because I can't do anything until source code drops.
Lastly, and most importantly: There are hints all over the rom about where it came from, some evidence is not removable (references to developers in the initramfs, we don't have source to rebuild the kernel, modifying the initramfs would result in a brick). I think I speak for most of us when I say:
Their jobs are more important than your instant gratification.
(inb4 thread locked)
yea, like take tehdarkknight for instance hes been bragging about having phoenix kernel version 1.74 up and running for a week now, which includes JIT and has linpack of 90.00

Perhaps he is pretending.....

On behalf of some considerations ,it might be good for them to support devs cuz what z,j and other devs doing is ,in certain point of view, elongating the life span of their product, they can just save money to elongate the life by releasing the RSA key

If you don't like it,fine.Originally I just want to share the news that they might not know what our devs are doing and all of you concern of my reply.
Like I told you, it won't work.
Anyway, for your future's sake, when you need to send a formal mail to make enquiries or requests from anyone, PLEASE USE YOUR REAL NAME. Anonymity using codenames/nicknames like Speak_Now won't let the other party take you seriously.
You're not a member of the X-Man. Nor from the Avengers. Neither are you from the Justice League. So use your real name.
Please don't be the next Edison Chen and embarras Hong Kong's name to the world again. -_-
I'm surprised this thread is still open.
Pilot usually closes every negative SE thread in record time.

Nope, I don't wanna hack my phone.
And my wish is for kids like you to be contented with 2.1 and stop all this nonsense.
You better work on your grammar if intend on getting into college. As for your hopes of this working...thanks to disrespectful immature pinheads moves like this, SE probably has adopted a "Never negotiate with terrorist policy". What was your intention when posting this? You didn't even wait for his answer. All I see here is a dumb kid trying to show off what little knowledge he has. Why would you attempt to embarrass this developer when his only mistake was having the professional courtesy to answer your question in the first place? I know what I'd do if I was him. I'd call your parents and ask them to teach you some manners.

XDA/Samsung

Hello Guys,
My name is John, I recently became the social media analyst at Samsung mobile. I wanted to start opening the lines of communication between XDA and Samsung. First I wanted to say I have noticed your work on our devices on the XDA forums. I think you guys do an outstanding job, I myself am a developer for mobile devices. So let’s get down to business, we’re going to be in Austin from March 10-15 for the SXSW(south by southwest http://sxsw.com/convention). I was wondering if any of you guys are going so that we could meet up and share a couple of ideas I have. I am looking forward to meeting some of you GREAT developers!
Thanks in advance,
John

Good to know your name is john. Unfortunately without giving us your last name it looks a bit weird. I'm sure you can understand the reservations.

Do the ideas come with subpoenas?
No thank you.
John Imah, please prove to us that you are really who you say you are and that you are not here for malicious reasons. then maybe people might believe you. I am very skeptical of anyone at samsung. They have yet to treat us right. (bad source and all)
As a show of good faith and so we know you are really who you say you are, how about a link to the complete source code for the EB01 kernel?
John, if you're for real, please tell Samsung to stop using the ridiculously inferior RFS filesystem. Why they would waste time developing a proprietary filesystem when better standard ones are available is beyond me. Also, the sound and color fixes shouldn't have been standard too. Our devs are awesome, but the fact remains that there shouldn't be a need for Voodoo in the first place.

If you really work for Samsung, please tell us when the magical fix for the GPS in the Galaxy S series that your support continues promising is actually coming. Or maybe froyo for the Captivate. Then maybe we'll believe you are who you say you are.

Oh yeah, that will work too. If you're for real, you'll have to forgive the lack of trust. We've been let down by Samsung and bitten by trolls far too often.

My GPS has worked fine since DJ05... Also, some froyo kernel source would be much appreciated
either he is legit or a very brave soul to come here ....he must know about all the animosity that people have for samsung here....
While the fact that the decidedly less-than-professional self-in-mirror shot and the Star Wars background made me a little skeptical at first, some quick digging shows the Twitter account @SamsungJohn, at least, appears to be legit.
I say that because it's been mentioned in tweets by the Twitter Verified account @SamsungService ("#FF @GalaxySsupport @SamsungMobileUS @Samsungtweets @SamsungEsteban @SamsungCarla @SamsungCos @SamsungOmar @SamsungJohn"), as well as @GalaxySSupport and other Samsung employees like @SamsungCarla ("A special #FF to the newest #SamsungSupport team member: @SamsungJohn. Android dev, #custserv tech. specialist, & mobile genius.") and @SamsungJessica.
Also, his full name is John Imah, according to the Twitter account.

On another note... gosh, I wish I could say the negative reaction to what definitely appears to be a real (and new!) Samsung employee's appearance here is unexpected, but it's not.
But it's also incredibly disappointing to see and I think represents much of what's wrong with the XDA community.
YES: Samsung has sucked at reaching out to consumers and has thus far been less-than-supportive of their devices.
BUT: Here they are, by all appearances trying to change that, and people just want to spit in their faces? Wouldn't it be more constructive to at the least hear them out, if not try to work with them?
I mean, I haven't seen any other phone company -- not Motorola, not HTC, not LG -- reach out to developers and actually want to share ideas.
So I am, for one, very glad that Samsung might actually be trying to change how phone companies interact with developers -- and is maybe even viewing devs as the potentially valuable resource they are, rather than the enemy.

Lucky you. Captivate owner here who wandered by accidentally, so DJ05 isn't my answer. I've tried every official and unofficial fix/hack with little success. I can now even get a stationary fix indoors in <10s with an XDA fix but can't track worth a darn in a moving vehicle for more than 30 sec at a time, making the GPS useless. And even that was an enormous improvement over stock and after applying the fatally flawed Samsung fix(es). Successive calls and emails to carrier, manufacturer and retailer yielded nothing but a vague assurance from Samsung that a pending (but timeline not specified) update would fix it.
Also, some froyo kernel source would be much appreciated

Wow. Whoever posted that tweet really is a prick. Sorry that you had to go through with that, T0d.
Man that sucks. I for one really appreciate your work and think you are a real asset to the community. I have used 3 different fruitcakes that worked perfectly.
Hope you don't leave, but if you do then thanks for everything you did.
Leave it to a few douche bags to chase off some of the XDA's valuable resources.
Without the devs, this phone would be nothing short of craptacular.
That bites hard, but please don't take it out on everyone else, for a couple of other people's mishaps. There's people here that don't complain, that try to help the others that don't even bother to search or read and people that are genuinely grateful for all of your guys work.
Furthermore, let's face it, no matter where you go or what you do, there will always be people that are ungrateful, but we shouldn't let them affect us, for if we do, we won't ever get anything accomplished...we might as well live off the grid somewhere.
Again though, please don't let a few pesky bugs take you away from the fruit that is...the Motorola Atrix... Haha

And everyone here thinks exactly the same way that that guy thinks right? Guess what.. people are idiots. It's too bad you're just willing to give up because a select few people... obviously trolls are writing you messages on twitter. Now unless there's another reason, like a new device that you got. Or you're just giving up developing for you're own personal reason.. that's fine. Thanks for all your hard work. But honestly, if your gonna get all upset over someone being an idiot on the internet, you should probably not go on the internet. There really are a lot of people on here that appreciate your hard work. But there are WAY more people that will be disappointed because you got a little upset over someone, that you don't even know, will probably never meet, and will never say something to you again, writing a stupid message on twitter. Put things in perspective. Cause there's a lot of us that are really thankful for your work. Take it out on a whole group of people because of one person. You should edit the post to. "if one person does this, forget all of you"
---------- Post added at 06:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:21 PM ----------
And i never said I wasn't appreciative of your work, I use it all the time and I'm very thankful for it. But to get all tight butthole over what... maybe what 10 people out of a community of thousands have said, just doesn't seem very rational to me.
I wouldn't get pissed if you left. It's your work. I would completely understand.
I have to wear safety equipment at work cause one person ruined it for everyone else. That's life. Lesson learned.

Ive been around here since pretty much day one of atrix comunity. This is not 10 of thousands. more like hundreds out of hundreds. if you like ill begin linking, the hundreds upon thousands of post pms, and twits where this community has over and over shown their extreme lack of kindness. this post is an attempt to communicate the frustration felt by every dev in this forum, not just me. (thats why if you look devs are clicking "thanks") and you proceed to flame. you are example to why little by little, all those devs who press "thanks", will say forget it.
Agreed with the above few posters.
If every dev responded the same way to criticism or just to negative/nagging comments - there would be NO custom ROMs being developed anymore and cyanogen would have thrown in the towel a long time ago as well.
I appreciate the work, of course! But come on, at least give a better excuse for leaving. I'd rather him have lied to us and say he doesnt have time due to a new job or something.
As a matter of fact, this applies to almost everything that exists. Android would stop being developed, no more new cars would come out, because there will always be nagging people around.
sam, this isnt a reflection on the ATRIX community in particular. For all you know, other communities could be the exact same and probably worse, but devs continue.
Its VERY unfortunate that you and other devs have to deal with those kinds of people.
It's not a fact of criticism. It's a fact of people being so entitled they think they deserve everything this minute without them being of any help. Most devs do this for free, for fun. And to be honest when you get a response like this it makes you go, why am I doing this and consider going somewhere else.
Furthermore I can say that the Atrix forums are the only one's I've seen that have this level of entitlement. It's a shame. I'm active in the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Nexus forums and nothing of this magnitude happens.
We always welcome criticism, bugs, etc. However they should be for the betterment of the community and because you feel entitle to something you pay NOTHING for and support in no manner other than moaning and complaining. By all means, please report bugs, issues and things you'd like to see changed, these are of great help to s. However there are not ETA's, there are not milestones. We all have real lives and real jobs that we have to maintain.
If you don't like that, then fork cm yourself and make the changes yourself. Then you can only complain to yourself when you haven't done it fast enough. I challenge anyone here to try and run a business full time, which I know I and at least one of the member of the team do, in addition to the other members having full times jobs, families, wives, children and interests outside the Android community they wish to pursue and still be able to do the level of development that that is done by the great developers here on XDA. Try it, you WILL change you attitude and opinion.
guys troll all you want , it really wasn't a thread to argue about he should stay, he should go, he should get mad , he should not. What the original post was about is simple, he was relaying information and giving one example of why he was fed up and leaving. See he is being kind and explaining it to people here and citing a reason, he could have approached it like many of your ex girlfriends , just stop calling, answering her phone , not coming around , over all just ignoring you till you give up and go else where. but realizing that no one likes to be treated this way he posted a viable reason here. Now we got got a bunch of jaded lovers trying to take final pokes and shots at him or other devs because what it makes you feel better ? it makes you more right than him ? get a clue guys Sam called it quits its over hes not taking you back, and the reason is you!

Disagreed, I've seen much worse.
I'm glad this is back to some school lessons from 30 years ago where when some people act out that everyone has to be punished.
Just link us to the contact info of the nagging people and the rest of the Atrix community will let them have it
I find it hard to believe that atrix owners are somehow more likely to be dicks than any other device owner, but maybe something was secretly baked into this phone that subconsciously triggers the buy reflex in a$$holes.

Personally I believe people who do this are those who are new to the Android scene. Those who either just came from iPhone or old "nonsmart" phones. From what i've seen around the forums, those who've been doing this for a while never do that. I came from a Nexus One when it was first released on AT&T for like $600. Sure, I used to ask for ETA on **** too, but i learned quickly not to.
But acting like a complete idiot towards a well respected developer? Ha! Dumb as they come! Sorry SamCripp, but i understand. This phone is at the end of its life span anyways. You did a fantastic job here and will be missed <3
