after doing the 8 thingy, i get north... but when i change orientation, the earth's north pole shifted LOL
i don't get what you mean with the earth's north pole shifted, but yes, mine works pretty good
try gyrator2 and rotate to 180 degrees
north and south will switch places then
that was a joke in a bad way ! what i meant was my North will not be at the right position accurately... it is off each time i switch my phone..
well if you have a case with a magnetic closure like I do, that will give you this effect...
whats that? is there any way to reset the compass or upgrade the software or something...
it is no where near accurate...
for example north is being shown to my right... i change the orientation of my phone by 90 degrees.. now north becomes my front / front right.. but never right again..
no one knows how?
It's crap in comparison to those on other devices. For example, my friend has a Nokia N900 and when he was around my house a few weeks back he had his maps application running in my front room and it was turning smoothly and instantaneously in real time depending where he pointed it. I couldn't even get the HD2 compass to get past the 'figure of 8' request without going outside the house, it simply doesn't work indoors.
It's not very good in my opinion.
ITT: People learn about "magnetic interference".

Maybe you don't know what a figure-8 pattern is.
Mine always works inside, actually never even tried it inside.
Plus, there is an app available that will give the exact same possibility with nav software.
Come on guys, get real...the compass "feature" is purely a typical iphone app and thats all it'll ever be...if you need serious accuracy you'ld be map relying on any electronic compass thats small and affordable enough to hold in your hand. If you need accuracy get a real compass and make sure its calibrated and nowhere near a magnetic field...

True, but it is fairly useful for remembering where I parked the car while at the mall

The compass hardware can be used for a lot more useful stuff.. Like a more accurate 'direction' in navigation programs.

Very droll. Maybe you live in an empty house.
My point was that, unlike the N900, it wouldn't work in my living room.
I compared the HD2 compass directly to the app on an iPhone 3GS. The 3GS app was way more responsive, but both showed the EXACT same directions and were diverted the same way by magnetic interference.
The only problem I see is, that the app is quite slow, but other than that its not worse.
I compared it with the iPhone 3GS as well, and found both to have approximately the same accuracy and the same responsiveness.
Also both are heavily influenced by computers and other magnetic objects. Best results are obtained when outside without any electronic or metal objects around
If you guys want to combine the compass direction with gps navigation, have a look at GpsModDriver.

Remind me again exactly what the HD2 is,oh thats right, exactly what you need to keep the compass app away from...how you gonna manage that then?
(I've only used your post barty as it nicely sums up the problem with this sort of app...nothing personal intended before anyone tries to start the flames a burnin)
btw how does a digital compass works?
so is it true that our HD2 DC is FuBar
My digital compass also does not work other than with Google Earth! I just want it to show me my approx location and height for even in places without wireless signals. I've been doing the 8 thing all over with no success. Any solutions?

All of a sudden, their developers realized they have been using the "wrong" formula to calculate signal strength, for years.... lmao
Now they are changing the code.
Sounds to me like they are covering up the problem so instead of reporting true signal, its only going to report averages, or on a timed basis... to make the users think they have signal.
Why don't they just admit a design flaw, and recall all the dumb phones...
I LOVE MY EVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Apple will be made fun of endlessly for this in the short term. It's not exactly the most classy way to handle this whole situation.
Fix the problem going forward on new phones, offer a free bumper to people who already have the phone. I bet 9/10 owners wouldn't bother taking the offer because they are lazy or don't care.

From my understanding of it...which was, admittedly, attained from a cursory glance of slashdot comments on the article about this...they were plotting the signal strength according to a linear interpretation of the signal, as opposed to a logarithmic interpretation.
Everything about how a radio operates (Amplitude and Frequency, for the most part) is most accurately represented in logarithmic form.
So either this is a horse-**** based explanation of the actual problem that has been there the whole time--which implies they've been lying about signal for 5 years now...or they are trying pass off this clearly gigantic antenna issue as merely "an age old bug"...
...time will tell.
Haha who else saw futurama tonight making fun of iphone? Tooooo funny
lmao, shut up and take my money
Dude......dumb post.
I love my Evo.....faults and all.....but guess what?....also think the Iphone 4....faults and all....is an excellent product....as have been all Iphones before.
Have androids surpassed the Iphone? In many ways yes, ...but not all!.
But the Iphone doesnt 'suck'...by any means.
C'mon....dont need to validate our love of the Evo by denigrating the Iphone. We're big people here.
I degraded iphone when I had winmo 5 haha I had fizzweather with wigets and background apps! More than iphone can do now even
If it weren't for the iphone the surge in phone advancement wouldn't have taken place when it did. That said, Apple is the Bill Clinton of cell phone mfgs - deny, deny, deny.
Giving away the bumper would be an admission, so they'll NEVER do that.
If you believe that I got a bridge here in NY that's for sale. This is a cover up to a design flaw, when you touch both antennas in a certain way and make them one the signal drops because you de-tune both antennas.
What they'll do is hardcode the signal meter to not drop bars like it's suppose to and call it a fix. This is a very obvious design flaw not a software problem!
If it's been wrong for years how come no one had problems with any other iPhones until they designed this phone?

Agreed!! Phone 4 is the first Apple phone that denies access to the dBm page..Seems suspicious!
Apple 2E computer forever!!!!
God, I miss that 5.25 drive... lmao...
This will be the iphone soon.
I dont think there is anything wrong with their signal strenght algorithm. They are just comming up with excusing for the poor antenna design.
It's blowin' a Hoolie all across the Uk tonight, not much of story there
admitted, but I was intrigued to see if my HD2 would finally show me those
damn leaves blowing across the screen......
Well up to now they must still be clinging to the trees cos
I am still showing rain despite wheelie bins blowing round the garden and my windows whistling.... hmm I wonder if we'll ever see all these animations ?
+1! LOL
I've not seen it in 12-months of HD2 ownership, outside of the demo
I heard the only way to trigger that animation is to stand on the summit of mont blanc in a 100mph wind, hold your phone in the air and scream "thunder thunder THUNDERCATS" whilst being struck by lightning.....
worked for me anyway....
Ah mighty Lion-O you have returned to save us
make sure you have gps on though or it wont know your really at the summit.....
on a serious note though, ive never seen it either.....
no storm animation
Same here in Germany. It is really windy, but my HD2 insists that I'm getting soaked rather than blown away.
I assume it is not a problem of the mobile but of Accuweather.
Hugo the JungleDyret
I actually saw the leaves display on a future day for Glasgow when I was going through my locations but it then turned to rain when it updated.
Hi,
I've been on these forums for a while but havent posted as theres been so much fruitful information.
I have a function I would like my phone to do. I am not sure if anyone has seen Initial D before, but do you remember the cup of water and not spilling.. Well.. I like that idea of smooth driving.
For people who doesn't know what im one about, its basically a cup of water on the dash. To not spill the water one must drive smoothly..
As I wont want to have a wet dashboard constantly.. I was wondering if its possible to apply it to an app? I assume its very straight forward with g-sensors and simple graphics but I cant do code unfortunately
Additional features could simply be having half full water.. 3/4 full water.. editing viscosity of water etc..
Or perhaps a better question is: is there an app already like this?
Edit: My main thought behind this is that as a driver, you always think the driving is smooth because you know what your going to do next, so your mind and body adjust for whats going to happen next. So to truly know if one is driving smoothly, why not have a unbiased opinion. a cup of water.
I can see potential safety hazards with this app so feel free to shoot it down.
I own a mazda rx-7 and like to go drifting quite a bit. an app like this would be kinda fun lol if it worked properly.
The tilting can be impliment pretty easily I thought, but perhaps the jolt from left to right, maybe a little more difficult.. i.e. the g sensor may sense 1 to -1 in 50ms, but in real terms the force will be 2 g's in 50 ms.
If someone really wanted to go all out on it then the delay will be non linear.. mm.. fluid dynamics..
Since the update came at the end of the month in July. I have noticed a jump in signal. When extreme heat outside, the signal bounces up and down. When the temperature cools down the signal seems to be much better and more stable. Seems the towers cannot take the heat very well. Anyone noticed this with there signal with GRJ90. GRJ90 Stocked Rooted.
Which state are you in?
There are issues with solar storms this time of the year.
Mainly in northern latitudes, but not exclusively.
My sat dish suffers from the same signal bouncing from time to time.

In NC. I never heard solar storms affect us that much. Can you direct me to some info on solar storms that affect us? Thanks.
