Dell has dumped the Streak - Streak 5 General

Today is a sad day for dell streak users, the new dell smartphone line has been relased and there isnt any new dell streak 5 releases.

Dell Doesn't call Streak a Smartphone
Dell doesn't call the Streak a smartphone. Dell categorizes the Streak as a tablet. So did you get Dell's marketing charts for their roadmap for tablets? Is the 7" Streak gone too?

I heard the Opus was going to be 5" so that could be the Streak 5 v2 I guess.

Does that say windows 8 in the bottom corner?

The opus is lined up on the roadmap to be the replacement for the streak. At least it looks like to to me

Dell looks pretty committed to android...lets hope they keep to that!

Let's also hope that the length of time apparently "committed" to the Streak means more Android updates down the line...

To me, after four dell products, the way they have treated us early adopters of the Streak with android 1.6, I will never buy another dell product, EVER.

If you look on the "table roadmap" slide - it shows Opus One as the 5" device. So it is safe to say it will be replacing the current Streak.

Seconded. I've avoided Dell products like the plague since about 2003. This was my first and last exception. I'll sacrifice the .7" of screen for a phone that is more open or gets updates. I would still be on doughnut if not for DJ Steve. The Streak is fine, but other phone are awesome. The Streak could be awesome if Dell would just cooperate for now it's just fine.

I just wish Google would take one page out of the Apple playbook and put their foot down and say from now on, ALL firmware updates will be controlled by us, not the carriers. If it wasn't for the mods/cooks, we would all still be struggling with 1.6

the os is open source, google, the carriers, the manufacturers, the users, can do whatever they want and release whatever they want whenever they want. if your on 1.6, theres nothing stopping you from putting 2.2, or 2.3, or 3.0 on your devices, phones, tablets, laptops.

even if this is totally OT, i would like to insist that dell is not to blame here. unlocked streaks received the update to froyo as much as 3 months ago already. att is the bad boy here.

thats because drivers pertain to hardware which are under manufacturers control and not googles. besides, the problem with the updates is neither dell or google's fault, its all the carriers. now if dell took a page from apple by saying no branding of software of any kind is allowed on their product, then thats a different story

Take a look at Sony Ericsson and Samsung. They are still on 2.1. I wouldn't blame Dell for AT faults. I love my unlocked streak and I would go for an unlocked Dell mobile again.

nothing has changed..

so the streak has been released in the US now and for quite some time in the UK/euro and nothing has changed.
we got a few companys making cases that are neither unique or exciting but basically we are still stuck with a niche device with a small user base. now i love my streak but i cant help but feel is only a matter of time before it gets pulled from sale and all support/updates axed. i know at the moment its a hot device but you have to admit there is a air of death in the air compared to say the galaxy S.
i hope im wrong but i really dont think i am.
Isnt 2.2 suppose to be released in September for streaks in America? Then again I don't think it's confirmed. Once 2.2 is out things should speed up also the fact the streak doesn't appeal to a massive audience it seems to appeal more to us geeks that's all we need. It shouldnt be to long before dell release the source i would imagine.
Also no offense to the galaxy s but it has its fair share of problems and that really doesn't do it any favors so I wouldn't be writing about that .

if Dell get the marketing right they could have a hit on their hands. here in the UK i've been out the field the last week (literally, camping) and the Streak proved it's mettle and a great talking point. now, at this juncture i think Dell suffer a bit from being branded a "box shifter" but i honestly think if Dell get their values correct with the Streak it will be around for a long time.
however, i am the first to admit that Dell does not have a great track record at leading a category - they tend to do whatever Microsoft and intel tell them to do (to the tune of a few tens of millions of dollars if anyone's been following the court case).
you just know when Apple release a 5" pocket computerphone that the pod people will buoy the marketing along for Apple ... Dell just does not inspire that kind of loyalty, or, is/has been getting the grass roots/astroturfing balancing act totally wrong.
It very much reminds me the story of N900.
Great hardware with great potential killed by the lack of interest of manufacturer, caused by the inability of big corporations to follow up on innovation.
I think the reason it does not move so fast at the moment is the lack if an updated os, but having mine for about an week now, I have to say the old os is somehow conceiled very good. The only lacks are the newest features that I have become used to via eclair and froyo..
And I am very sure that a lot of people are waiting to buy until froyo arrives. And as more and more people get tech interested, these " niche" gadgets get more popular.. So my two cents say that Dell will have the success they intended with the device.

I just don't see it. This device caters to geeks basically. Most consumers don't want a gigantic phone. My personal experiences have been normal consumers saying the device is too big, too ugly, and too niche.

This is what I heard from a regular Mac+iPhone user. And non-pocketable.
Until he took streak to a hand noticing how thin it is. And it fits into my pocket! Amazing. And the touch screen is very nice...
Overall reception was "it's not that stupid as it looks"

It bugs me that so many reviewers cite old "firmware" (presumably they mean OS) as a reason to mark down the Streak. That's a crap reason, and a hallmark of a crap reviewer IMHO. I bought my Streak over the Desire because I knew that any (ok... most) software issues can and will be corrected, either by Dell or by us lot over here... but no software update will allow the Desire to browse the internet so comfortably, or be a reasonable e-reader, or enhance the (slightly) weaker battery, or make it such a beautiful platform for CoPilot, etc. In face, the only thing I did not like was the proprietary connector (because that can't be fixed by software). That is, until I found out it's a PDMI port.
A friend of mine recently crowed about updating his Desire to Froyo. I asked if it'd upgraded him to a 5" screen. He looked sad.
I just can't help feeling that over the next few months, we will find the Streak becoming greater and greater as cooked ROMs emerge. Good times ahead.
Honestly I think our best hope for Froyo is to keep bugging Dell about their GPL violations until they release their source so the community can get it up and running themselves (and yes, that's not such a great option either). Given what I have seen so far, I wouldn't really trust Dell on this.

You are not wrong. And that's why I haven't bought one yet. I even get a 10% Dell discount because I'm a student. But the lack of buzz and adoption of the Streak almost guarantees it to obscurity or failure. At that time I'll happily pick one up. I feel it's just priced too high and will slide down the closer we get to super/hot/awesome/fire greatness or the next thing. I'd like it to succeed as well, but I think Dell has screwed this from the start.

I will assume the idea from Dell was not to release this as an "mainstream" device, but a device to appeal to geeks and such. It is no way that Dell thinks 5" is a phone for the mass market!
I am pretty sure this is a device launched to make Dell look like an serious actor to be reckoned with in the future. Genius would I say starting on the top of the pack.
But, just my opinion....

the Streak makes them look 'tacky n nasty little boys toys', which is what they are.
The Streak is like owning a top of the range BMW, you're not going to find accessories for it in Halfords/Wallmart
With a lot of bug...
I think the real failure in north america is the device is locked to at&t used only.
At the end, it's a nice device to have.
I think that is a good product too but the network driver is very buggy in 2.1 (8023) and if this release is the final release, it's a very bad things....

All the BS about it being official and how you should send the 'leaker' a donation makes me want to puke.
NEWS: the official one (when released) will be mentioned on the official websites, them being Dell or 02 themselves which will have a link, might be a bit obvious for some!
If Dell Streak owners are all that gullible, i'm going to start buying all the old first release 1.6 seconhand ones on ebay i can find, install 2.1 then sell them as BNIB just delivered from factory. As they obviously believe everything they are told.
In the End
I'm going with ATT, t-mobile is foobared on this phone

On my X5 they had to exchange 2 shocks in the first 18 months (fortunately they did for free even though after the warranty expired).
Besides, was there ever a perfect product?? Look at the iphone, took them a whole year just to get cut and paste, 3 years to get even basic multi-tasking.
cut and paste are not here on my Dell Streak...
Only on specific application but not on email...
Yes, I know that this build is a "beta" but from this topic and an other this build (8023) is a GM build, isn't it ?
So, If this build is a GM, I think the network driver is not finished, that all !
I have full network at home with my iPhone and my HTC and my Dell Streak too, but I lost the network on my Dell Streak frequently...

Is their a good site to follow Opus One updates on?
Do we know if the Opus One will support T-Mobile too or just ATT?

I guess that's why the Streak 10 has only been released in the US?
That is certainly a UScentric view. I'll think about while I watch the sun orbit the earth.

Thinking that the streak 5 will stop recieving support simply because it's discontinued in the US is plain up stupid.
It's still supported in the european markets and it was launched there BEFORE it launched in the US. If anything the US is was always the minor market and it was with the way dell launched it here and with At&t. Rogers up north wasnt that much better and was basically mirroring at&t with support.
Retail/unbranded streaks have ALWAYS recieved updates the fastest and most frequently and as retail it doesnt matter where it was purchased it will continue being able to run retail roms.
Excluding the retail streaks, the asian markets (japan and korea) recieve the greatest number of updates anyway, and that's where GB is most likely to land first if it doesnt land on retail first.
Hey Guys.....
I just read on Forbes' website that HP has officially discontinued ALL WebOS programs / devices..... according to the article, this specifically includes ALL tablets and smartphones.....
IMHO, Dell would be short-sighted now to discontinue future tablet & smartphone development...... But unfortunately I'm never invited to their shareholder meetings LOL

All Dell phones in US are I believe EOL. I believe the current offering was just to test the waters. My best guess is give it a year or so and they will be back.. Companies are beginning to get it now...with the fall of webos, it is no big trick to come out with just another phone or tablet... it is now time for innovation and probably enterprise security to android.
Now I'm really pissed.... Just last night, I read on 3 "credible" websites that HP would begin offering their 16GB Touchpad at BestBuy & WalMart for $99 (32GB for $149).... I've been to 3 BestBuy stores today and they all told me their remaining TouchPad inventory was shipped back to HP..... I dare not go to a Walmart store and hear the same story for fear of having a meltdown right there at the service counter.... You know what, with these kind of shenanigans, HP deserves to fail!! .... .. There, I feel much better now

I don't live in the US, but I did for 37 years. I have noticed that mobile hardware makers do tend to be UScentric to an extent. I'm not saying it's categorically true in every instance.
Nokia's latest releases are the antithesis to this, for example.

The US launch and lack of advertisment is a very sore spot. Maybe that is why they gave up on the US. Since Dell chose to make the US second fiddle our press paned the device. It was not released on time and was released with what the US press considered outdated software.
In a country that likes to be first in everything of course that will generate some poor feelings. Plus, Apple is strongest here. If you can do it to Apple's level (advertisement, product delivery, innovation) then you might as well pack up and go home, unless it's cheap and the Streak 5 was not cheep.
I think the US just was to hard for them to support.
My hope is that the next Gen Streak will be released here first with full disclosure and advertisement. I think the Streak 5 would have done very well if it had been fully supported here in the states. People are still asking me what it is and where they can get one. Now I have to sadly tell them they can't.
I've cut ties with Dell until they can show drastic signs of taking their devices seriously. I picked up an Atrix the other day when they were free at best buy (I told my wife-to-be to use her upgrade on it, she said she was fine with her current phone but I could have it...what a catch!), and it's amazing how much more refined of a device it is (excluding motoblur, but I never booted into the stock rom so I didn't have to deal with that). I will always miss the 5" screen though. Luckily Samsung is starting to make bigger and bigger screens on their phones.
The only thing that saved the Streak was the great communities on xda, modaco, and pocketables...Dell, sadly, shot themselves in the foot with how they handled the streak and I am done with them.

that might actually be a good thing for Motorola owners, which had horrible to no support for software upgrades with each phone they buy
you are lucky to get a new firmware if ever, in the past.

Technically, they're buying the Mobile arm of Motorola, Not Motorola per se. Motorola Mobility.
Technically, there is no Motorola "per se."
Motorola split into two independent companies several years ago, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility.
I guess my next phone will be a Motorola nexus. I think its actually great news. Will miss the Samsung exclusive super amoled screen, but Motorola makes some awesome hardware. Maybe now we can be rid of motoblur, get some codecs integrated, etc. I wonder how long it will take for them to design and release a new phone? I dont think the next Nexus will be a Moto Nexus - it takes time to build a new phone. Maybe the next one after N3.
I hope HTC/Samsung/LG dont feel overlooked and everything in the Android ecosystems stays in balance. I don't like the idea of competition between manufactors and GoogMoto.
Excellent! Hopefully Google will axe MotoBlur (or whatever they call it these days) and we can start seeing motorola hardware with stock android.
If the next nexus is by moto, I'll be skipping that iteration. Moto hasn't made a decent handset since the v710 or e815. Poor Google.

i think this is a good thing. first, it gives google some patent strength which they need to keep doing what they are doing with android. they did say that nothing will really change, as far as, motorola mobility is not going to become 'part' of google but will be a separate business and will license android just like everyone else, just owned by google.
but yes of course it lends an intimacy which will in turn strengthen moto handsets and hopefully push all hardware manufacturers to have to keep in step. and yes hopefully that means more stock android devices all around! i dont htink it would be in anyones best interest if goog shows favoritism to moto though, so hopefully they will not. in the end, whatever is good for android will be good for all of us
Lets not get ahead of ourselves... I'm sure a transaction of this size will require regulatory approval from the U.S. and EU... and you can BET that the anti-Android crowd will try to intervene, a la Sprint w.r.t. the T-mobile acquisition.

Q:What is the difference between Dell steak and samsung galaxy notes?
A: DELL
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
You would be considered weired for using Dell Streak 5 for making phone call when Dell Streak 5 was launched back in 2010. What now? Everyone use Galaxy Note for making phone call and it's a trend.
Why? If Streak 5 was designed and made by Samsung in 2010, would there be any difference on Streak 5?
When I chose a Dell Streak 5 as a phone with mini tablet functionality, I did so because that was exactly what I wanted.
Whether the rest of the planet thought I looked ridiculous or fashionable talking into it was irrelevant.
What do they know anyway.
After we all adopted the Streak 5 as our communications weapon of choice, Samsung finally jumps on the bandwagon and gets a piece of the action.
Good for them.
Dell had the balls to do it first.
And we were all intelligent enough to recognise the virtues of the Dell Streak 5.
It may no longer be perfect in a now rapidly advancing technological world, but it remains an original fully functional classic in its own right.
Eventually, expect Apple to come out with an iPhone 5 in a similar form factor - because that's pretty much where the market is going soon.
I also have an iPhone 3GS - now I barely touch it.
It's just too small to work with - particularly since I got my Dell Streak .

I use my streak every day, never get any negative comments regarding the phone, will be getting the note when my contract expires with o2 next week, its a bit of a shame dell stopped making this phone. If you see the new mission impossible film you will notice ethan hunt uses the streak as a tracking device in the dubai sandstorm scene.
I never post here much but have been a member for alot of years and visit the site on a daily basis,i am just not clever enough to add anything constructive as developement is not my strong suit, thanks to all the devs on here and have a good new year.

Marketing and support make things different.
Lets examine Dells fantastic marketing strategy, in the U.S. at least…
Great idea: Lets create a new device that has all the newest features and blurs the line between a cell phone and a tablet and will take the world by storm!
Great idea: Let’s Package it with a really old operating system that will make everyone pull their hair out while waiting for us to update it to a slightly less-old operating system!
Great idea: Let’s not advertise it, except on our website where everybody goes to buy our crappy computers and no one would ever think to look for a cell phone!
Great idea: Let’s only sell it at ONE store in the United States of America, Best Buy! The place where EVERYONE goes to buy large screen T.V.s and refrigerators! Hopefully it will be displayed with the tablets so it just looks like the smallest, lamest one…
Great idea: Let’s offer it to the masses at a nicely discounted price through At&t-- only, to keep consistent with our marketing strategy, let’s not tell anyone! Let’s make sure that when one of the few people who does buy this wonderful device goes into an actual At&t store that the salesmen will look at the Streak and say, “Whoa, sweet phone! Where can I get that?” Then the Streak user can inform the At&t rep that it is available through At&t… Let’s make sure that this phone does not show up on At&t’s actual website where people may actually go when looking for a cell phone…
Lastly, when we are looking to hand out the blame for its failure, we’ll say that the Android operating system is just not ready for prime-time yet, even though it is already the #1 cell phone operating system in the world. Makes perfect sense!!!
I guess the world was just not ready for a 5 inch cell phone
I liked my Dell Streak...it was the only device at the time that had the options
that I wanted. Now 14 months later, I moved on last week with the Note.
The streak, for what it had, for my use was pretty stable. I stuck with 2.2.2, and
didn't "abuse" mine. Kept it in a pouch when not in use, out of extreme weather conditions. Towards the end, it was starting to appear a little sluggish.
It was Dell & AT&T who dropped the ball on the Streak. They either designed it
to fail, or just didn't know what they had.
I had a looked at the Galaxy note and I would still refer to stay with my dell streak 5 because it's still useful and can do all that I needed.
Galaxy note got a better camera both front and rear but not for me.
Dual core CPU, not really benefit for me and all current apps I used are running fine on Dell streak.
Galaxy Note is a bit bigger (thinner! Not the same, still bigger in my pocket) and it's very noticeable with device at this size and the 0.3" bigger screen add no benefit to my browsing what so ever (for the one who said it's smaller is a liar).
So unless my Dell streak is dead. I will stay with it til the end. Don't give in to commercial propaganda, buy buy buy buy!
Well I have had streak 5 for 15 months and thanks to XDA it has and still is a great device. Have looked at the note which will be my next phone but not until I outgrow the streak which will probably not be anytime soon

Just to say. My post was not meant to be negative towards streak owners. I own a Streak myself. I was surprised to see you can get something even bigger than the streak( Sam Note) and still use it as a mobile phone.
Everyone hates Dell because of their computers, so they think that their phones suck too WHICH THEY DO NOT.
Dell Streak kicks the sh*t out of anyone's phone in my school.
Now they didn't do a good marketing plot with the Dell Streak because they did not enable all the Dell Streak's features like working fm radio and stuff.
They also have ROM which most phones today don't have.
512mb ROM + 512mb RAM technically equals into 1GB of RAM.
The stupid thing they did was take if off-sale and not make any more updates for it.

Dell gave up on the streak about a week after releasing it, shame because it is so sweet.
I don't see how the Note is a tablet and the Streak is a phone, especially when Dell says that the Streak is a tablet and Samsung classifies the Note as a smartphone...
That's one of the reasons the Streak failed, I believe.
You should be thankful for anyone that is willing to try and replace the device that we are all so addicted to...

Actually. Dell Streak is a smartphone. Dell just tried to make people buy it. It is not a tablet. It is a smartphone. Heck. It's a GENIUSPhone
Thanks for clearing that up...

FYi, radio fully functional now. check my post.
I moved from a blackberry to a 5treak and by far with the development in this community n the open source of the android os everything is good thus far. This kind of reminds me of that one video on youtube I saw. Not sure if I'm pasting the link right but if not search youtube for "a day of glass by corning"
Www.youtube.com/ watch?v=6Cf7IL_eZ38
N to boot the streak implores the gorilla glass tech while Samsung prefers amoled which has a lesser life expectancy n higher battery consumption

the dell streak5 is an excellent device and as long as the there are rom developers willing to work on the device i'm not letting mine go. dell definately dropped the ball on this.
part of the reason the streak 5 didn't sell so well is because dell didn't advertise it enough. So many people that I met did not know that Dell had cell phones.

AT&T Official Lumia 920/820 Announcement

Here's the press release:
http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=23417&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=35477&mapcode=consumer|mobile-devices
What I found interesting is that the cyan will be offered but not the gray! The cyan must be an AT&T exclusive. I guess the gray will not be offered here in the U.S. unless the rumored Verizon Lumia 922 gets offered with that color.
Cyan was my first color choice, and I'm glad to know I'll be able to get it. My wife wanted the gray so she'll have to pick another color (maybe the white?).
I'm pretty pumped about this also. I'll finally be switching over my last line (girlfriends) from Tmobile now. lol! I was thinking of grabbing her the 820 just because it's a little smaller for her hands and pretty much has the same features of the 820.
The only thing I'm wondering now is how they're going to handle folks that wasted an upgrade to get the Lumia 900. I'm going to raise some havoc with all the devices I've purchased in just a year of coming back to ATT.
the carrier logo is ugly, really ugly...

I just noticed that. So much for the rumor that Nokia was going to prohibit carrier branding on the phones.
I don't get why Nokia and Microsoft thinks this is good for a brand new platform that's trying to attract people, I really don't....

You mean, only releasing it on ATT? Or releasing a successor to the Lumia 900 so close to the release of the 920?
If it's the first, from what I understand is lack of carriers confidence in WP..which is understandable because in 2 yrs, it's barely made a dent in overall users. That's the main reason I think they need to offer some kind of upgrade for existing users to get WP8 moving and continue an aggressive marketing strategy.
well that's it windows 8 dead out of the gate. Why do exclusivity again when that didn't help them much last time? That's the phone most ppl wanted if they were going to go to windows 8.

I'm talking about carrier exclusive nonsense. I read somewhere earlier that the L900 sold 600K, which didn't mean Nokia or Microsoft didn't make a good product, it meant people weren't switching carriers to get it...when will they learn...

Well since I know I can't get the Nokia 920 I looked at the other phones and noticed they probably won't even have LTE...WTF. I won't even be going windows 8 now.

Its not WP8 .. they are getting the HTC 8x. Its something to do with Nokia and ATT, that is, if Verzion doesn't get slightly modified 920/820

sorry but those HTC phones look like crap next to the Nokia which is what I wanted. Also the possibility of no LTE also makes it a no go.

Yeah, the carrier exclusivity does suck as the Lumia is kind of the only thing getting non WP users excited about coming to WP. And I stand corrected that it may be due to carrier as I also read an article saying that ATT HAD to be the exclusive carrier or else....so in a way it's still a carrier thing as I'm sure Nokia would like to dump this bad boy on EVERY carrier with the position their in.
