I live in an area that is about to transition to AT&T, so when my trusty Diamond died, I switched to the HTC Wildfire. Alltel is my provider, so that means CDMA. Alltel still calls it the Wildfire, but HTC calls it a Bee. There are more than just radio differences between the Wildfire and the Bee. Cosmetically, it is different, as is the bootloader version.
Here are the lines from the HBOOT screen:
BEE DVT2 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.24.0000
MICROP-0422
RADIO-1.00.00.10.01

I like the size of the phone. I'm not a big fan of those huge screens, since I like to carry my phone in my pocket. I just don't feel right using a stock phone anymore, so I'd like to wipe the Alltel branding off and maybe get an AOSP ROM installed. That may be possible right now, but even if we can successfully root this phone, I worry that the lack of a Clockwork Recovery image may limit my adventurous nature. Also, I cannot find a link to a stock ROM, should I ever want to sell the phone or just restore it to OOTB software.
After poking around in various forums, it looks like this phone may have been dead-ended before I even picked it up. There does not seem to be a lot of effort to get it up-to-snuff, with respect to ROOT and ROMs. Not that it is a big deal, since I'll be on AT&T in a month or two anyway. I would like to lend a hand to any devs out there that feel like playing with it, but I'm not holding my breath.
Given that installing a ROM seems to be unwise at this point, what would you do with the phone? I could pay a little more and get the CDMA Desire, but the dev situation for that phone is not much better, and it is a pocket-buster. Looks like I'm stuck.
Not sure if you can root your phone yet, although someone with more experience would be able to tell you more. Your hboot is different than mine, my version can not be rooted yet.
You can find roms here http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buzz/
I'm fairly sure that this can be rooted, but since I can find no Clockwork recovery and no shipped ROM, there is no going back. The bootloader on mine seems to be an older one, so that should not be the hold-up.

What andriod version are you running then? Of couse you can do it, you just have to find a shop that has a xtc clip, buy one, or wait until unrevoked sorts their tool out ... Since im not going to pay top whack for one of those ive emailed a few shops in my area and im awaiting a response. Im off out tomorrow to see asian dude who does unlocking on the off chance.
AFAIK, all wildfires shipped with 2.1, at least mine did. Keep us posted with your progress. I'm outta ideas.

I have two of the HTC bee cdma phones I have rooted one and can't find a recovery for it so I can't go any farther with out being able to make a backup. If we can find a recovery we as a community can make things happen. I have posted on other threads stay away from the buzz things they can brick your bee. I have tried to get XDA to start a section for the bee so we are not having threads of now what do I do to fix this I flashed a buzz whatever on my bee. PLEASE XDA START A HTC BEE SECTION FOR US. So we can get some developers to see we are here and need help.

So I am really liking the aria , but I am wondering what more could I do with it if I root it. So can someone tell me the pros and cons of rooting. I hear that rooting takes some time so is it worth it. What roms can I run, and will I be disappointed when running them because they crash. Thanks
Rooting the Aria takes around 15 minutes if you do it right (use the unrevoked method).
Pros-custom ROMs, add your own mods, etc.
Cons-voids warranty (supposedly...I've heard HTC won't deny your claim)
There's probably more of each, but they don't apply unless you're into programming.
There are two main custom ROMs for the aria:
Liberated-removes ATT bloatware, enables sideloading...great ROM when I used it, won't crash (under normal circumstances) because its basically stock. Great if you like Sense.
Cyanogenmod-no Sense, adds new customizabillity, no bloatware/sideloading block/etc...also great, you might experience small problems with GPS and bluetooth (just from what I've heard) but nothing major.
You can check out the Aria Development forum here for more information.
I still haven't done it with mine, even though I had my G1 rooted and running cyanogen within a day. The difference? The G1 wasn't completely functional stock; the Aria is. As I had to go on a 5 week tour of Central Asia right after I got the Aria, all I did was unlock for a parade of strange sim cards. It falls into the "not broke, don't fix" category.
That said, now that I'm back for a little while I'll probably root and at least put liberated on it. The att apps don't take much room or cause any trouble; it's just knowing that they're there and can't be taken off...
If that makes sense to you, root.
If not, don't. The phone works great and has less, well, "idiosyncrasies," shall we say, than cyanogenmod ever did.
When you root can u get the htc stock rom if you dont want the custom ones

Just root and have fun with it. You will get all the information you need from the good folks here. Your phone will be all it can be when you release it form the restrictions of ATT and HTC.

Just as the Title asks. I've looked but some threads are really old. So what do you guys think?
Also, what is THIS lock screen!? It's awesome and I love it!!!!!
Thanks in advanced guys and gals!!! Another thing i was looking for was those backgrounds with those sexy girls wearing headphones and it looks all artsy and ****. cant find the plain backgrounds anywhere....
Well the most important thing to know: a new build gets released every Friday form the Chinese team, then a English team ports it to EVO usually over the weekend for a weekend release. So every week there's a new build.
Latest _English_Port_ is 1.14 ... but 1.21 just got released today (revs are by date) BUT the Chinese team found a bug and is supposed to be releasing a patch tomorrow. The MIUI team responsible for porting the weekly builds apparently already ported the 1.21 but isn't posting it as a official build yet as they are waiting to see what the original dev team is releasing as a patch first.
I would say the current 1.14 is easily the most stable build, the new 1.21 coming out has some UI changes, so it could actually introduce bugs, but only time will tell. Honestly though MIUI has come a long long way.
I really like MIUI rom but not having multitouch on the gingerbread keyboard kills it for me. Hopefully they can get it working soon.

This 1.7 seemed to run the best for me with the included kernel 1.14 had a lot of reboots. I loved the UI and the built in extras like the traffic monitor and the blacklist options but found it too unstable for me. I went to evervolv 2.3a15 and love it so far. Gps doesnt track as well as miui but its an apples oranges comparison. Basically if you can get a stable daily driver miui going on your evo then enjoy olit. The thread in the general section has a lot of believers for sure.
so far 1.14 has been the most stable for me, but myself and many others have been experiencing a problem where whoever we are talking to hears an echo of their voice. The devs are gonna try to work that out for the next build which should be awesome. I'd wait till the final of 1.21 is released.

Okay, so after looking over MIUI and the themes and lockscreen mods I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY RREEAALLLLYY WANT IT!!!!!
But...there's just one problem...
After looking over the directions, and the HBOOT S-OFF thing, nothing seems certain. So many different sites and threads say that some this way doesn't work, this way breaks your 4G, and I can not for the life of my find out how to simply just get MIUI on my flipping Evo! To be honest, from everything I've looked up so far it looks like a ****ing death trap. No joke.
And whats up with partial English? From what I've seen things look like they're in English. How much is still in Chinese?
Is there anyone out there that can show me (or tell me) a very direct way and not an "iffy" way of flashing MIUI. I have Clockwork and I don't know how to check to see if I have S-OFF. I got my Evo 4G the day it came out, so does that mean the way I rooted it back then turned S-OFF for me?
I thought S-OFF was only for people who got the new OTAs and couldn't root their Evos.
I'm sorry but MIUI ust confused the HELL out of me and I'm so willing to take a leap of faith because I want it so bad, but bricking or messing up my Evo ust isnt worth it. Help anyone?
My whole ROM is in english. I'm using the current stable release and it's the best ROM I've used after UD.
The one thing I noticed is that my 3G speeds seem to be slower. I'm on wifi a lot so it isn't too big if a deal but still annoying.

Well, if you have flashed a custom recovery(Clockwork), then I think you must have s-off. The easiest way to check your s-off status is to turn your phone off, then reboot by holding down power+volume-down. The phone will boot into the h-boot screen. At the top will be several pieces of info including your s-off or s-on status. Make sure you do not have any custom roms or other .zip files in the main directory on your sd card before you do this as the hboot will try to flash it when it detects it.
The very first post in the general forum has a lot of really good info as well. Another excellent helpful resource is the IRC channel for the Evo. The link is in the post.
S-off just means security off, by the way. You can't flash custom roms or other stuff until you have s-off.

yes they just flash like a normal rom. But since they do release an update almost weekly, it would be hard to do a complete wipe everytime and titatium back up everything. so miui already has a Miui Backup program in it that will make changing to the next release go smoothly without much of a hassle.
I flashed the MIUI ROM last night and my phone rebooted on its own like a handful of times when I was sleeping. I kept hearing the vibrate sound and seeing the white "HTC EVO 4G" screen like when you first turn on the phone. NOT happy!!

HTC is implementing security on the bootloader on all its newer phones, and older phones (while updating the firmware).
the HBOOT of htc is becoming more and more secure day by day, so that in the near future it wont be able for a htc phone to get rooted. if this continues, it will have a great impact on the htc market. its gonna suck. it will also have an impact on the custom rom builders. no more development of custom roms.
lets hope that the hackers will make their work best to get the phones rooted.
why does the manufacturer fail to support rooting. it is like, first they let us purchase an icecream, and then they are taking back the cream over the top, and leaving us with nothing.
wildfire had been the first victim. till now no one can say confidentially that a 2.2 wildfire will be rooted even in the future. wildfire with 2.1 has got many easy rooting procedures, but once updated to 2.2 not even a single rooting process has evolved in 4months of time.
legend seemed to be a victim. but its developers managed to root it (even after froyo update). they havent root official froyo. instead they downgraded frm official froyo to official eclair and then rooted eclair. however, then managed to update to froyo without loosing root. its given in legend forums. may be this process is gonna help someone who is working on rooting wildfire.
aria had been another victim. htc aria got updated to official froyo on 25th feb 2011, and like wildfire it is still waiting for root access.
and the about to release s series htc android devices like wildfire s, desire s, incredible s are all falling under the victim category.
here the link by unrevoked gives u devices categorised by their ability to get rooted.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/root_friendly
somewhat better news from unrevoked is that wildfire 2.2 is in temporary unrootable stage, which means it can be rooted in future (same with aria).
so suggesting u to get a root friendly device, if u have an idea of purchasing a new device.
Thats really bad news. And i have the first problem with my new firmware
Rooting often gets peeple to buy the phone due to development and htc is killing this group of people but im sure there not bothered as people will still buy it so they wouldnt loose much.

yes i agree with that. i have purchased htc wildfire in november 2010 without having any prior knowledge on rooting. but once purchased, i rooted my phone in november itself using unrevoked. i enjoyed the freedom of custom roms for a month. but at that time there was no huge development in custom roms.
and without any knowledge (that updating looses the ability to get rooted), i have updated to the official froyo. now struck at the froyo. cannot root and cannot even goback to eclair. 4months of waiting without any result. im regretting myself soo badly for making the update. i see there had been a nice development in the custom roms from december. cyanogenmod 7 distributed gingerbread to wildfire. even honeyfire experimental roms are going on. but cant use them on my unrooted phone.
i agree that people dont have a prior knowledge of root when they purchase phone. but once after purchasing, they will definately know about rooting, and if they feel they had made mistake they will regret.
if unrevoked had given this list before, and if i have seen this before, then i wouldnt have purchased wildfire definately.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/root_friendly
let us hope to minimise this. let every newbie know about rooting. let them not make mistakes in choosing their phones. and this thread is all meant for that.
HTC morons -- let's think of strategy that will mean fewer people will want our devices -- then go ahead and implement it; short sighted corporate nazi stinking thinking.

So we should only have devices which the company allow us to handle free. So WE decide what to do with the devices. Noone else. This is a clear selling point from the company.

Just a FYI, I was on the phone with one of my friend HTC engineers, long distance from outside the USA, which he gave me some good gossip about the G2.
*Take it for what is worth. I do admit this my not be new info to some.
1) There is a OTA update coming for the G2 which will DEFINITELY cause you to loose root, and A LOT OF WORK has gone into the update to prevent rooting. Matter of fact, my HTC friend tells me that the encryption algorithm will almost make it impossible to root. My opinion, nothing is impossible!
2) BTW, there IS MAJOR development in up coming new tech with 3D displays. My little 'rumor mill' friend informed me that he seen a Android live wallpaper in 3D fire that looks so realistic that when you tilt the device forward, the icons actually go through the flames.
3) He told me that when the G2 was originally released, it was purposely done to make it hard to root, and now with the Gingerbread OTA update just around the corner (he said it may happen in July) by the time IF anyone figures out how to root it, the phone will be completely outdated.

I dunno, but its true that bootloaders and rooting are 2 separate things anyway. He's referencing rooting this latest stock GB rom, not unlocking bootloaders.
*edit-
It seems there is an 'official' leaked rom out there that is digitally signed by HTC and also T-Morgul (misspending is applied) that after flashed, perm-root has not yet been achieved. Now the great devs that stripped the GB rom (from the raw, has rooted it), so you can flash a rooted version, but hasn't yet rooted after flash.

hard to believe.
I find when people are lying they add useless information like "a long distance phone call" and "out of usa."
Were this true imd expect somthing like "i was talking to a buddy of mine that works for htc. He heard they had some new encyption that will take forever to root!"

I would say he is lying, but after spending some time in the irc its not looking so good. They even blocked the fail safe goldcard method for downgrading. I think this is bad news being one of the first to receive a 2.3 device back from them I have tried everything to help get this thing rooted hope there is a way to root it soon before all the devs leave for newer devices.

Hi !
We gonna see about that!
But just to put some things straight:
- The goldcard to downgrade method also needed temp-root to change the main version in the misc-partition.
- At the moment we do not have a working temp-rooting method for gingerbread (besides gingerbreak but this has been patched in our version)
- We are not working on a new temp-root very urgent but this will change
Comes time, comes root.
Have fun - Guhl

Even those running a custom rom?
well if you think about it, if GB update from htc has been in development for the past 6 months (with specific configurations for different phones). and during this development phase they're stance was to still lock rooting and bootloaders. it would be near impossible to get a release June/July with a different development path based on the statement by the CEO.
either they will push back the OTA update, or roll out and meet the deadlines with their current path and with other phones already getting updates the past few months. I would say they're rolling it out with just configuration testing and QA on our phones
Why not just do this...sell rooted devices and locked devices. Or just sell all devices rooted. Lets face it most people now with android phones have no clue what the os is capable of and buy it off of hype.

not terribly worried about it. i plan on switching to the BB Bold 9930 when it comes out to Sprint in a couple months.
