Just when I resigned myself to the Xoom, I hear about this... - Xoom General

We now have confirmation that the S1 is indeed PlayStation Certified making this a full-blown gaming tablet. We've also revised the image above to make the top less pronounced.
So what about that curvaceous mockup above? A design described to us as "beautiful, the best thing" one source has ever seen from Sony. Click through the break and we'll explain.

A Playstation Certified Honeycomb tablet, you say? Be still my beating heart. I know that SE doesn't have the greatest track record, when it comes to updates and what have you... but neither does Motorola, and both companies seem to be trying to improve. I expect them both to have a locked bootloader though.
The only problem: September launch... ugh....
So should I wait for this, or grab the Xoom....?

just load the psx emulator on the xoom... only thing you can play are psx games and probably psp games. I highly doubt sony is going to forgoe a large market of tablets with relatively similar chipsets.
also, I'd say no thanks to any Sony android device with a skin on it. They have never updated a single android device from which it was released. If you got a phone with 1.5 then good luck!

I can't see a gaming tablet not sucking.. any built in controller will be too cumbersome. IIRC all playstation android stuff will be available to all android devices that are capable. So any tablet and a bluetooth controller should be fine for gaming.

Sony S1's Android on the Iconia Tab

Do you think we will be able to install Sony S1's android version on the iconia tab and try those PlayStation classics and features. I know that it's early to know, but don't you think it would be so awesome to have the Sony icons, apps, and the PlayStation classics on the iconia?

I don't think it would be as easy as porting over the OS and then being free to download games onto an unsupported tablet - sure its HC but I'm fairly confident Sony will have something in place to check the hardware.
If that's the case then it would be pointless to port it over if you can't actually get legit games for it. It would then mean the only purpose it would serve would be to play pirated games (whether you own a legitimate Sony game or not).
Will it happen? Maybe... if Sony doesn't put major hardware checks in place. Would it be worth it? Only to pirates.

Even if Sony puts hardware checks in place, I'm sure it'll be bypassed quickly, I mean its Sony. Lol. Anyhow, if you actually own the discs, their plasystation emu was recently hacked to play ISO images of PS games, so you can just copy your CD to your computer. No piracy involved.

Dude, what-are-you-talking-about? Nobody gives a rats ass about old PS1 emulator that was finally release somewhere nears the end of its lifecycle. The PS1 was built and released at a time when this kind of things was nowhere nears as prevalent.
Now you're talking about a state of the art tablet from Sony (who btw are notorious for hardware checks) and you say "I means it's Sony. lol" like you know what you're talking about?
ugh.

...and your point is?
Obviously people give a rats ass about Sony's PS emulator, otherwise they wouldnt care about putting it on their new phones and making a PlayStation branded phone. The OP obviously cares and I care too! Sure Android games might look a little better than PS games, but there's nowhere near as much depth to any game on the android market. I wanna play me some final fantasy 7!
Sony is retarded, and the devs and hackers here are genius. If you can't see that after what's happened this year alone, then you've been blinded by your Sony fanaticism. The devs will rip apart any "state of the art" tablet from Sony and make it their ***** within a week of getting it.
Pirates are not people.
Even if it could be ported (which I'm sure it won't be) If you couldn't play legit games on the port, whats the point in overwriting your tablets supported ROM with a ROM that has no legit use?
I'm pretty confident it would be a pointless affair.
and there is already playstation android.... emulator.
Sony will have an android rom ????

@[email protected] nice idea
i am waiting for the announcement of pre-order Sony S1...............
Just a quick note,
I ported the S tablet rom to iconia a500 yesterday, and everything initially looked fine, it was really simple. BUT!
the part which is used for Sony Store and PS compatibility of PS1 games, was protected with a bootloader check, when this fails everything else gets disabled somehow.
so i doubt we will see this port, unless someone start cracking the S rom, which is kinda very much illegal since you start modifying alot and sony's binaries needs changing?
anyways, i tried and i happily failed i do not want to crack it.
I've played with the S1, it's actually pretty slick, and I wish I would have waited. I love my Acer, but the Sony is just, reallllly cool. The built in IR remote that gets it's programming over the air, is a pretty slick idea as well.

I had just opened a thread in the Apps and Themes forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1268796
It seems to be a nice roster, filled with good old RPG's to the brim (Arc the Lad, Alundra, Popolocrois, Wild Arms...) Just what we were asking for.
I wonder if they're still going to use the native 1.0.1 emulator. Or an improved one.

This is huge
We bought this device because it was a great android smatphone that provided us with the best gaming experience due to it's physical buttons, and now look what we've got!!
I mean this totally changes everything. People always dreamed of a real psp phone! And it's finally happening
Actually it isn't, I got mislead by Popolocrois. It's orignally a PSX game, but since it only got released outside of Japan in its PSP version, I thought it was a PSP title.
Sounds like a step in the right direction
This news is great, funny though, I couldn't tell if your wan was saying PS 3 SDK or PS Suite SDK, lololol!
I think they will release PSP Ports to us in the future.
Hmmm, definitely a step in the right direction, although a few of those games are already available on the Android store, and I haven't even heard of a handful of them (I'd have trouble even pronouncing the titles ), and some are obviously original titles. The linked article also suggests that these titles are for the Japanese market so the list may change when it's released everywhere else...we could get different games or we might just get a truncated list.
But I mean Magical Dice Kids? Really?
I think in the next round of updates it's time they brought some more well-known PSX titles to the market...stuff like ridge racer or gran turismo, some final fantasy titles, twisted metal, tekken, metal gear, god of war...they need to bring out some more Playstation recognisable titles for these Playstation certified devices. I'm not convinced people are buying these devices to play games like I.Q Intelligent Qube. They sound like games you'd buy for a DS, not a PS device.
This is a good start but the next step in what titles are released will be crucial. New games also need to be coming in regularly.

Dude you have some strong points here, however, what's making me really positive about this whole thing is that the xperia play and the PS Vita will have access to the same store! Which means the future of the play is bright because we know as a fact that Sony will keep pushing great games for the Vita and since that's the case this means that both Sony and Sony Ericsson will keep optimising this device. While SE will keep updating the regular android software, hopefully till icecream. Sony on the other hand will keep working on bringing new games to the market + the fact that a lot of android games are being optimised for the play lately.
This device has huge potential and a brighter future. I seriously consider it one of the best android devices you could get today, it's a great package of both multimedia and gaming.
I don't regret for one second choosing the play over all these dual core phones which will be missing all the fun we play owners will have just to brag about a processor that's still not using it's full potentiol due to the lack of software support.
Cheers

Thing is due to hardware differences between the Play and the Vita we'll no doubt see games come out for the Vita that don't make it to the Play. That's what I'm a bit worried about. My point still stands that they need to get their arses into gear and release more recognisable Playstation games, and on a regular basis, for this service to have any hope of being remotely successful.
Still, a good point.

Only time will tell how great the PS store for the xperia play store will really be! What makes me optimistic though is that since Sony included the play with their collection ( tablets + Vita) this for me is a very good sign that they will take care of it.
Fingers crossed

Sony Xperia Play 2 - Petition

Hi this thread will may give sony the push they need to start and develop another generation of Play2.
anyone who would support and would buy Xperia Play2 that will have a minimum of a quad CPU and some future wonderful GPU if it will be out, please replay to this thread.
only if your answer is yes reply else we don't need you
The Xperia Play was a flop in business yo Sony, they didn't make much from it, they were expecting millions and millions to be sold. Usually companies don't waste time on a successor if the original was not popular.

i'm with you man
VIVA xpeRia pLAY 2
quad core , tegra 3 ... i'll buy that , and don't care how much that will be
It's because people are greedy that XPlay hadn't the success Sony hoped for. People wanted XPlay to have from the beginning 500 optimised games, ability to play PSP games, Android 5, quad-core etc. But I'm happy that only smart people are owners of XPlay, the others still playing games with their thumbs covering 30% of the screen.
That's how customers are nowadays, they want everything to have the Apple logo, to be perfect, to be popular.
Also, about XPlay 2, Sony will surely do it in the future. It will be something big, a great gaming phone. Unfortunately, right now they have to sell PS Vita's before that.
Does anyone actually have sales data for the xperia play? I know it didnt exactly blow the walls of all known sales records, but I don't think it was a loss making flop like some make it out too be, but if anyone can say im wrong please present the evidence.
The play had a couple of drawbacks on release which really hampered its sales, im hoping sony is going to sort these out and try again, they may not, in that case i will be waiting for a high end slider.
According to this, in september 2011 sony said xperia play sales were meeting expectations. Hardly the flop its rumored to be, but also not a huge success. Truth is, it sold an expected quantity, so there's no reason to think that it won't get a successor. No strong reason to believe it will either.
Yes I think we need an Xperia Play 2. The Xperia play was very good but a little late with the tech inside and this led to a lot of hate from many reviewers. I would say if people at least gave it a try they would change their minds, I mean it is every bit as good as the Nexus S with the bonus of physical gaming controls.
xperia play 2...at least 4.0 AOS for x play.

I support this thread completely. If this phone came out tomorrow I would pre-order it. However, the biggest issue I haver with the first is its incompatibility with other sony devices, ps3 primarily. I understand this is an OS issue and would like to see a vita OS if possible. I know that is a legal issue. Although if it were done properly in the first place this phone would have been a significant flagship phone. Either should have "gone big or gone home". I would give them another chance. Possibly another one if they actually tried, moreover, if they don't try I'm gunna give them fewer chances. One last thing, samsung could have made a device more compatible with sony products.
Its funny, if a phone doesn't get close to iPhone sales figures then its considered a flop. Since there is a zillion different android phones you can consider all of them a flop as androids market share is split between countless manufacturers. The curse of the open os.
If you think about it, xplay is no more a flop than android is.
There are far to many android models. You need a company to make a gaming phone and only a that. Sony has at least 10 different models competing with its on xplay.

Seems we have an ifanboy.. haha.. I like options. Unlike the iphone which is..one phone..and no, not all android phones are "flops", but hey you should look at some sales figures and then see actual sales then come back and reply until then, don't assume.
lol I am anti apple, just telling it the way it is
Geez you either can't read very well or you took my post the wrong way.
Now-a-days it isn't the phone that's selling its the specs. If you see a new android on the market then you would also see heavily advertised specs about the phone. Bottom line and common sense would tell Sony that higher specs in the worlds only gaming phone would sell through the roof. Also maybe if the touch pads weren't such a big deal to configure for development and games then half the complaints and lost sales would not be what it is today. It doesn't take a genius to know what the ppl want so why is it so hard to put more effort and ambition in this device to make it more successful and up to date. Its simple you gonna sell seedless grapes instead of grapes with seeds in them because you know what ppl want and that's without the headache of spitting out seed after every grape. Stupid analogy but think about it it does make sense

Popular among teens
i am a teenager (13) and i love y rooted and bootloader unlocked xperia play (i did it by myself) and all my friends say that it is a great phoone and that they want to have one. i think it should be continued, but made cheaper so more people between 13 and 18 can afford it (my parents are moderately rich and i got it within the first 6 months of release)
I don't see it happening. It treads too much on the toes of the Vita and was probably Ericsson who pushed for it to happen before. So either Sony is going to see that the future of mobile gaming is integration with smartphones or they're going to continue down the dead end road with the likes of the Vita, in which case the Xperia PLAY 2 won't see the light of day.
The Xperia PLAY didn't do as well as it could have because it was released with 1 year old specs and reviewers are generally unforgiving of that. For an Xperia PLAY 2 to be a success, it would need following:
- Dual/Quad core GPU
- 1GB RAM
- 720p resolution display
- Tegra GPU (not as powerful as others but nvidia is and will continue to buy the market with exclusives)
- 8GB internal memory with expandable memory.
- PSP games - the vita can emulate PSP games, so I don't see this as being unrealistic.
- Better gamepad integration for devs with built in touchscreen to button mapper.
I just don't see it happening any time soon, especially while the Vita is still in play.
I think the future of mobile gaming will be integration with smartphones but sony isn't there yet. When they are, if they can develop the vita into an xperia play shell, they will have the market sewn up (they already have the decent game developers on-board).

At launch the Xperia Play wasn't too bad, the MSM8255 is still a fine performer.
As much as I hope for you guys a newer Xperia Play will arrive, a petition of any sorts will absolutely not help. Creating and releasing a phone requires months, if not one or two years of work. Especially something that would require so much extra development, new partners, extra quality control, content at launch, ... It's very hard to get all the cycles in the development process up to speed since a phone is something completely different from a console.
I'm in for the Xperia Play 2...
So far My perfect phone will be a Xperia Play with the 32GB Galaxy Nexus Screen and Guts... It's not that difficult Sony.
I will jump to the Galaxy Nexus while I wait...for it
It's all obvious. The Play was launched with old specs for a phone at the time, never mind a phone that should have been cutting edge to be a gaming phone. It's been said many times, but a phone that is up-to-date spec-wise with a gamepad would sell unbelievably.

Sony buys cloud gaming brand gaikai

Sony buys Gaikai for £242 million and gains a strong foundation for their own cloud based gaming proposition.
So if you have not read in the news already, Sony have indeed bought the north America based brand for them sleves. £242 million is a lot of money but only a fraction of what some of it's competitors like OnLive are valued at. Which is why a lot of analysts are claiming this to be an absolute bargain for Sony.
To be totally honest, I was unaware that this brand even existed until I read the news. I think a lot of us Android gamers were initially taken in by OnLive as they have constantly supported it for Android. We have an Xperia PLAY optimised app, a Tablet S app that supports the PS3 pad and of course with the new ICS rom on Xperia S, we have it still. But there is one area that I have to say is let down by OnLive and that is lack of choice for high end titles. Having done my research on Gaikai (pronounced Guy-kay), you will see they offer some beefy titles like: Fifa, Mass Effect 3, Rainbow Six, Dead Space and even the Sims3.
So what could Sony be planning?
It will be a long time before we see anything starting to appear on Sony hardware or even the Xperia products if they do. Frankly I beleive that this will be like their entertainment network offerings like Music and Video Unlimited. Perhaps branding it Playstation Unlimited is a bit unlikely but a cool pet name for the time being nonetheless. It will be available to download for non Sony devices like iPhones and Samsungs too and might even be a subscription based service. This theory would tie in with their strategy for Playstation Mobile, it's a revenue stream for them even if you dont have a Sony product. But hopefully there will be some opimisation for the PS Vita and Xperia PLAY devices, who knows by the time it comes to market, there might even be a PLAY 2.
A lot of other people are expecting this to tie in with the launch of the Playstation 4 product later in 2013. Which could be very likely but when do Sony ever release stuff on time. I'm not being harsh at all, I love sony, it's just they are so bad with delays and stuff that I wish to remain pessimistic for now. However that doesn't mean to say it will be limited to the PS4, as cloud based gaming can run on any device that has a processor supporting a H.264 decoder. Which even includes todays entry level phones, TV's and tablets. Like OnLive it will be playable almost everywhere.
The only potential issue which we need to keep our ears to the ground, is how will Playstation games be integrated into this? For those of you that don't know the gory tech talk behind game platforms, I shall explain very briefly. Playstation games are developed for Playstation hardware, it is a different language and set of hardware to what is used by PC's. PC's use intel based processors and NVidia graphics and this is the tech behind the GaiKai servers. Meaning that Playstation games designed on different hardware will have to be run on different servers or emulated somehow to work on the Gaikai servers for playing back. This could be very expensive for Sony as all of their new hardware like Vita, run on AMD processors. However they work this out, let's hope that a better selection of the back catalog is available than we current have with PS Store.
So the big question is now. Do we all jump ship from OnLive? It is rumored that Microsoft are looking to purchase OnLive for themselves. Perhaps not, perhaps the greatest thing about Android is that you can have the best of all worlds. Including decades of retro gaming with emulators. As we are not an official Sony Mobile website and are impartial, we can pick and chose to have whatever service we want here. Maybe we will add a Gaikai section next to Onlive. Who knows, but we have a long time to wait to find out these answers. Anything could happen between now and then but rest assured knowing that we'll bring you the important updates on this when anything emmerges.
Article Source: http://www.xperiagamer.com/Blog3/son...nd-gaikai.html
sorry, but most probably it will not be for the play... The Xperia Play had been abandoned since some months (Since the cancellation of ICS update, i think)
Sony gave up on us, friend. We would have ICS but they have to herp derp about it. "It's a gaming phone. Blah blah."
I don't care that sony bought Gaikai. I think that they will be using it so you can get "instant" downloads of games: You download a game and it takes a few hours and in the mean while you get to play the game on a Gaika
i'm checking the internet , every day , to find a news about xperia play 2

Nvidia Shield Successor Appears Scrapped

http://www.androidauthority.com/nvidia-shield-tablet-k1-successor-looks-scrapped-709375/
It looks like those of you holding out for an updated NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 successor might be waiting forever. Despite rumors that NVIDIA might drop a new tablet at IFA 2016, a dismissal letter has shown up at the FCC stating the device has been cancelled. The letter cites unnamed “business reasons”.
The letter requests the FCC to dismiss the grant application for VOB-P2290W. P2290W was the model number of the device leaked a while back as the Shield Tablet 2, also known by its codename ‘Hawkeye’.

Except Nintendos tablet will most likely not be anywhere near as open to development.

That was sarcasm. Nintendo will be anything but a real gaming tablet.

Oh by no means would I discredit Nintendo and neither should you. The Wii U wasn't the best thing to be released, but given Nintendo's track history (besides the Wii U) there's no reason to not look forward to this tablet.

But will it really be a tablet?
I mean, if Nintendo really releases a tablet with Nvidia chipset I'm all in as long as the specs and performance rock on an economical level.

Will it be an open source Gaming Tablet running almost stock android like the Shield? Definitely not. But you can count on it being a dope and relatively powerful tablet with awesome first party games? Of course.
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy by any means I don't even own any of there consoles as of right now, but I will most likely buy the one coming out if it meets even half my expectations.
Looks like I now want the new Pixel (nexus) 7....

What's that?
Huawei are, reportedly, making the new Nexus 7" tablet. Will be called Pixel instead of Nexus, looks like the Nexus brand is being phased out.
This is dissapointing, I've always felt the nvidia tablets have been the strongest android devices (outside of nexus/pixle) that we have had available.
Word! Guess the next one will be a pixel/nexus then.
