Nvidia Shield Successor Appears Scrapped - Shield Tablet General

http://www.androidauthority.com/nvidia-shield-tablet-k1-successor-looks-scrapped-709375/
It looks like those of you holding out for an updated NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 successor might be waiting forever. Despite rumors that NVIDIA might drop a new tablet at IFA 2016, a dismissal letter has shown up at the FCC stating the device has been cancelled. The letter cites unnamed “business reasons”.
The letter requests the FCC to dismiss the grant application for VOB-P2290W. P2290W was the model number of the device leaked a while back as the Shield Tablet 2, also known by its codename ‘Hawkeye’.

Commenters suggest the recently half confirmed Nintendo NX Tegra X1 portable game console is likely the reason: it's essentially a tablet you can plug into your TV.

So, same deal only that it's labelled Nintendo instead of Nvidia. Great!

Oh by no means would I discredit Nintendo and neither should you. The Wii U wasn't the best thing to be released, but given Nintendo's track history (besides the Wii U) there's no reason to not look forward to this tablet.

I mean, if Nintendo really releases a tablet with Nvidia chipset I'm all in as long as the specs and performance rock on an economical level.

Will it be an open source Gaming Tablet running almost stock android like the Shield? Definitely not. But you can count on it being a dope and relatively powerful tablet with awesome first party games? Of course.
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy by any means I don't even own any of there consoles as of right now, but I will most likely buy the one coming out if it meets even half my expectations.

What's that?

Huawei are, reportedly, making the new Nexus 7" tablet. Will be called Pixel instead of Nexus, looks like the Nexus brand is being phased out.

This is dissapointing, I've always felt the nvidia tablets have been the strongest android devices (outside of nexus/pixle) that we have had available.

Word! Guess the next one will be a pixel/nexus then.

Find me ANY Nintendo DS forum with those kind of stats.
nintendo isn't even in the same playing field as the psp. It's like trying to compare smartcar to a ferarri.
Also @Rem3Dy - The reason the x10 sucked was because of its hardware. The processor, the screen, and everything was like 5 years old on it. Other than that it had amazing design concept and android itself looked awesome. If they incorporate the same theme/launcher, with better hardware (which is a must on a psp phone), then it can def compete with most of the phones.
The only problem is the fact that, we don't know how big the screen is. For a psp type device, i wouldn't buy anything smaller then a 4.0, and would have to "consider" it if it has less than 4.3.
btw can anyone say, amazing emulators with amazing controls? But who cares, bet it won't be for sprint anyways. Says sim card on the top of it.
Agreed but it does look kewl!

No matter what the homebrew community does for the PSP, it doesn't change the fact that it gets spanked in sales.
I personally adore my modded PSP, but I don't pretend like it's kept up with the DS. Hell in some months the DS sells more than actual consoles.

lol who cares on how much it sells? it's **** compared to psp. Again, you are comparing a ****ty car to something great. The good car doesn't get as many sales because it costs more and it offers more to the plate, while the ****ty one sells more cause it's more affordable. Same thing in consoles. There is a reason why xbox 360 sells more than ps3, and i think we can all agree from the specs and the stuff that sony offers is a lot better than microsofts. The only thing xbox has is online playing, other then that it can't compete.
The more you pay, the better product you get. Doesn't matter what the product is, that statement is true 99% of the time.

I believe you are misinformed. The x10 hardware specifications aren't 5 years old. They pretty much mirror what we have on the evo. The reason the x10 wasn't that great was due to software (they are still using 1.6!).

Sony absolutely doesn't deserve Android. Ask Experia X10, hobbled by sony's allergy to up-to-date versions of Android. They give android a bad name.

I never said it was a psp... And if you did read it you would know that it will have a marketplace dedicated for games for it. Sort of like psp go type marketplace (my guess)..
RTC88 - the screen and processor are lacking from what I read.
stondec - the ui is 100x better then most of the ones atm. It just lacks the update support on it as well as the developer community.
The ds is for kids, the PSP is for adults
Now that thats out of the way, This thing is like a psp go mixed with and evo plus a better processor. This thing looks awesome, and will probably perform the same. True combination of phone and gaming console.
Also, the psp go wasn't big at all, so if this is anything like that, It will have a nice form factor!

You realize that it's a PHONE too, right? You're not just carrying around a PSP and a phone. It's just a nice, high-end Android device that happens to have some adequate gaming controls.
OK, seriously, there's two options here, OP:
1) It was a typo, and they meant "shipping with 2.3"
2) It wasn't a typo, and this device won't be released for at least 6-12 months, when Honeycomb is announced at a developer conference like Google I/O (where Froyo was announced) or a press event in the fall (like when Eclair was announced).

I love the idea not going to lie. But it reminds me of that Nokia phone years ago that played games on a cartridge that was made for iy and that was a huge FALIURE. I'd like to see it do good though, I wouldnt mind picking one up. They could've done a little better on the design part sliding it out.

A Playstation Certified Honeycomb tablet, you say? Be still my beating heart. I know that SE doesn't have the greatest track record, when it comes to updates and what have you... but neither does Motorola, and both companies seem to be trying to improve. I expect them both to have a locked bootloader though.
The only problem: September launch... ugh....
So should I wait for this, or grab the Xoom....?
just load the psx emulator on the xoom... only thing you can play are psx games and probably psp games. I highly doubt sony is going to forgoe a large market of tablets with relatively similar chipsets.
also, I'd say no thanks to any Sony android device with a skin on it. They have never updated a single android device from which it was released. If you got a phone with 1.5 then good luck!
I can't see a gaming tablet not sucking.. any built in controller will be too cumbersome. IIRC all playstation android stuff will be available to all android devices that are capable. So any tablet and a bluetooth controller should be fine for gaming.

A new version of XPlay?

It seems SE will launch a new PS Certified phone, the successor of Xperia Play.
Phone sizes keep creeping up, to the point where I worry using a 10.1-inch tablet will soon become the norm. If rumors are correct, Sony Ericsson's thinking big with their first glasses-free 3D phone—a possible PlayStation phone, perhaps?
Word on the street is Sony Ericsson wants a slice of the 3D pie that HTC and LG have both already cut, however negative the reviews may've been for the EVO 3D and Thrill 4G. Supposedly this phone they're working on with a 4.7-inch screen has a mega resolution of 1280 x 720, which in my eyes would make it perfectly placed for a follow-up PlayStation gaming phone to the Xperia Play.

Just a thought maybe this is the nexus prime?! 720p display check, huge ass screen for a phone check. I'm sure this will use dual core so thats another check. Make's sense for this to have ice cream sandwhich since it has that big ass screen. Nexus prime doesnt use any buttons, so 4.7 isnt that bad when you can make room since no buttons.
I can see why they would release it early. The new nexus comes out in november

LOL, your comparing a mid range android phone that plays mobile games to a state of the art dedicated handheld that will make the Play look like a Sega Game Gear?
Okay then lol......
Vita will have Uncharted, Resistance, Call Of Duty, Mod Nation Racers, Little Big Planet, Wipeout, PSN etc from day one and have graphics nearing the 360 and ps3 on a handheld.
I'm currently looking to pre order my Vita, the Play will do me until the Vita releases, i'll then get rid and have a "normal android or ios phone" and a dedicated gaming device (Vita) as the two don't mix too well at all in one device as seen with the Play lol.
And many people agree judging by the terrible sales of the Play and the poor reviews from across the board.......
Don't see what everyone is complaining about.
fk 3d phones and why do people need dual core. Do you often find yourself using 100% processing all the time.
3D has to be the biggest gimmicks out there at the moment and not to mention it's lack of clarity.
The problem i find here is that most people are whining about a phone that has been out less than 6 months and for some regions on 1 month.
For most regions it came on 2.3.3 and an update for 2.3.4 is out in September not to mention the recent software update that has already made the phone better in some features.
People here obviously lack patience and if you are constantly looking at what is coming out next then you will always be disappointed with any of your purchases.
Here's an idea... if you don't buy anything ever you will never be disappointed.
You made your bed now sleep in it or trade in your phone or something.
I love my play and am perfectly satisfied at the time between updates. If you like your play you will tell people about it rather than complaining about it and turning of people from buying it which then leads to companies not supporting it due to the low sales.

I agree whole heartedly! Love my play, only real issue is devs not making decent enough games for it - bit of a chicken egg scenario, devs wont make games as not enough ppl have bought the phone, ppl wont buy as not enough devs making decent games for it...
Don't matter tho, FPSE and the xoid family gives you all you need
Back on topic - I would love there to be more ps certified devices, and cross manufacturer, I want a dual screen device, with the second screen displaying a game pad or a keyboard at all times depending what I am doing!
i hate touch screen controls so until there are more phones with gamepads PS certified phones don't really interest me unless they are the next gen Xperia Plays.
pretty much all SE devices from now on will be PlayStation certified.

Sony S Tablet Preview

Not arc-related, but there's no Sony S forum just yet.
A short walkthrough of some of the new multimedia features of the upcoming Sony S Tablet.
It arrives in the US and Canada on September 16th, 2011.
would you say this is better than the other tablets on the market? per say the transformer? I really want a tablet but cant make up my mind. Thanks for the video!
What makes a good device is the community behind it, the Arc's is very small, and development is slow. Even the low/mid range tablets have been improved alot because of hardworking dev's
Just a thought, check out the working community behind the device before you hand over your cash.

Up until now, I've never found that I needed a tablet device specifically. I do everything my Core i7 laptop/Core 2 Quad desktop and frankly only use my Nook for reading.
I've used the following tablets:
- Motorola Xoom [reviewed]
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 [reviewed]
- Apple iPad 2 [bought, brother's]
- Nook Color [bought]
Unfortunately, I've never used the Transformer, but its reviews are all excellent.
What draws me to the S is its multimedia functionality. I think it needs a $100 price cut but otherwise, unless I find some serious flaw once I get a review unit, I'll probably drop the $500 for one. The design is unique and functional and Sony's screens are beautiful.
Right off the bat, I do wish it had HDMI out.

It's just another me-too Tegra2 tablet that's far too late to the table.
The new Galaxy Tab 7.7 is head and shoulders above the lot of them with a superior CPU and screen.
I just need something at school to replace my cheap laptop. I was thinking the asus transformer but I'm always pulled to sony. Thanks for the review

Nexus 9 to run Tegra K1

I recently started to notice a crack on the corner of my shield tablet and im still within my return time for gamestop. If my issues were Wifi only i dont think i would be worried especially with that recent update that seems to have addressed most of my issues but these cracks are a hit and miss not to mention it will totally kill resell value.
But one of the best things about the Shield is the controller, which i doubt would be supported but I know what you mean.

i was lucky enough to grab two nvidia shield controllers from amazon before they ran out.
I think 64bit apps will take time to mature so I don't see the benefit of it now. Plus most nexus won't have expandable storage and that to me is more important as I will be using the tablet for a lot of gaming and need as much storage as I can add. After all that is why I bought the shield tablet.

I contacted Nvidia Customer support and they agreed that the corner cracks are a legitimate problem. They offered to replace my device now, or in the near future, after corrective action has been implemented. I chose the later.
Instead of returning your device to GameStop, have you considered contacting Nvidia directly, and getting a replacement unit?

I have considered that, but until i know the cracking issue has been corrected i dont want a newer device. I dont want this to be another xbox 360 RROD were i had to replace my device 4 times in one year because they hadnt corrected the real issue. it was a real hassle being without our device for many weeks. Wondering if its even worth it or maybe i should just return it, get credit and purchase the nexus 9. The only thing thats holding me back is nexus devices dont normally have microsd slots, nvidia exclusive games and the nvdia controller is awesome.

I contacted Nvidia about replacing my Shield Tablet because of a recently developing hairline crack on one corner. Following is their response:
"At this time we are still investigating the root cause of the hairline cracks.
If you wish an immediate replacement we will accommodate you but please be aware that there may be a small chance that your replacement unit may also crack. Otherwise, you can wait until we better understand and mitigate the underlying issue. As this is cosmetic there should be no impact on performance or functionality.
Please reply and let us know which option you would prefer. If you choose to wait, we will contact you when we believe we have a definitive fix."
I have no regrets about getting the Shield Tablet. I'd like the 64-bit one because emulator performance will be improved, however no SD slot effectively means the Shield Tablet will be the best tablet for me for quite some time yet (and I appreciate a lot of other stuff like the controller and stylus too).
so is it confirmed that the nexus 9 uses the 64-bit denver cores? i think the mention of dual-core indicates this as the other K1 iteration was quad-core?

Didn't the First Nexus 7 have a tegra chip & so did the HTC one X - Both of them ran like ****.
I'm not impressed with the fact they are using Tegra chips - the HTC One X was a nightmare to root & rom due to the tegra chip.
Poor show google.
If you take into account that these are custom made, not just standard arm processors that they used from previous version.
Basically, these K1 Denver chips are like Apples A8 Chips.
This won't be the same as the Tegra 3/4.
The shield tablet is very easy to root with towel root! Btw with the devs that are going to be here it's going to be a piece of cake. Have some faith!

I am keen to try it first hand though. I had a Tegra 2 device and a Tegra 3 (that was the nexus 7) and both were disappointing
Plus, Tegra is quite closed source. So maybe don't expect any miracle hacks
One thing though, supposedly NVIDIA have really lifted with their mobile SOCs, the Tegra4 was decent. I see this is both HTC and NVIDIA getting back into the Android market (well HTC into the tablet) and this could be risky. Because since the Tegra2 and 3 were a flop, all vendors allmost went with QUALCOMM last year and this year

I think 64bit apps will take time to mature so I don't see the benefit of it now. Plus most nexus won't have expandable storage and that to me is more important as I will be using the tablet for a lot of gaming and need as much storage as I can add. After all that is why I bought the shield tablet.

Same as I feel,SD slot really is a deal breaker...
Plus, with the 399 price point I can buy a full set of Shield Tablet+Controller+Case
But I'm still willing to buy Nexus 9 if it had a sd slot
By the way this is a bit off topic but how is Shield Tablet's screen quality?
I'm considering to buy it but I read some reviews said its screen is good but the color saturation is just average
For all you obsessed with tests and benchmarks.
Hey nerds, enjoy!
To be fair first impressions was not that great! And has a horrible yellow tinge to the white
