[Q] Sent email sync with Opera (PC) - Android Software Development

Hello all,
I use Opera as my email client on the PC, it has a specific database format.
I would like to be able to import in the PC the mails I have SENT with the phone (Desire HD on Android 2.2.1 so far)
The received mails are easier because i just don't delete them from the server on the phone and so they always appear as "new" on the PC, I don't use IMAP because I could never get it to work properly on the PC and so I'm looking for an app that takes the sent mails from the phone, exports them into the mbs opera format and then reimport them into opera (or at least generates and mbs file which I can reimport manually in opera)
Is there such a thing that exists around ?
Thanks

IMAP e-mail

I use IMAP instead of POP3 because that way no matter where I am I can access all my messeges but it's not working very well with my pcoket pc. When I try to update my folders it attempts to re-download/verify every messege so it sifts through 700 or so messges which takes forever plus it uses up my data package. I have the setting to only download headers and no part of the messeges but it still doesn't stop this.
Any ideas??
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I tried IMAP for a while but also found it very slow and a bandwidth hog. I guess it must always scan the folder list in case new folders have been added.
Anyway, I switched to POP3 and it's much faster. Of course you can only sync your Inbox but the POP3 client on the Magician does not mark the messages on the server as 'read', so when you next connect with your PC the messages will all still be there. This works well for me as I do not end up with some mail on my Pocket PC and not on my server.

I will be using my Mini as a desktop replacement for 10 months- so there's no way to use IMAP on a pocket PC successfully??

Well, IMAP does work reliably on the Pocket PC. I used it for a few months this year without any problem. But as you found out it is slower than POP3 because it has to do more, e.g. scan the folder list, sync the folders you have selected, download/upload mail, move mail between folders, etc.

The a look on QMAIL: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1344
For me it is the best email client on PPC so far (and it's free!).
I use it mith my IMAP box without any problem.

email attachments thru gmail

Hi all,
Does anyone know how I can attach files to email using a web browser? I am using an O2 Mini with a gmail account, at work I can browser the net, but cannot send or receive emails using any standard messaging prog, ie webis mail or such.
Both pocket Ie and opera ( and minimo) dont let me see the 'browse files to attach' button.
At home I can attach files with no issues, but the home network is one that I have setup and control. The work network in not one that support ppc use. frankly the it guys aren't sure how I can browse the web at all.
Any ideas?
thanks
ray
try using profimail from lonlely cat games, which comes with a free file browser.
Go to Gmail, activate POP3 in the options and then follow the instructions here: http://www.ppcsg.com/mobile/index.php/t60214.html
You PPC will then be able to use its email client to access your Gmail client and then attachments should no longer present a problem.

Vanishing sent messages / IMAP

I searched on this forum for the answer and could not find it, so I apologize in advance if I missed it. I am set up for email with IMAP and whenever I send a message from my desktop computer, those emails show up on my Qtec in the sent messages folder. However, when I send messages from my Qtec, they are sent, but vanish completely from my sent messages (or any folder) on my Qtec or my desktop. I have no records of the emails I have sent from my handheld. My temporary workaround has been to cc myself and then move the received email into the sent messages folder, but thats a pain and not the way its supposed to work. Thanks in advance.
did you look in the messaging app
under the menu iteoms tools then options ou see a tab called message.
make sure keep copies of sent items in sent folder is ticked.
I admit I've been Googling
I'm having the same problem on a different Windows Mobile 5 device; I've ticked that setting (as well as syncing the "Sent Items" folder), but the messages still disappear. The same problem occurred on my older Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition device. Very odd.
bug in Pocket Outlook WM5 IMAP sent items problem
its a bug... Its unbelievable that they havent fixed it in WM5 either! I've also been struggling to use this, the keep copy of sent items option being ticked doesnt work with IMAP for some daft reason.
I did some searching on the internet, and the (apparent) reason is to minimise memory usage on the pocket pc, which is fine for POP but the whole concept of IMAP is that all the email is on the server not on the device! So it really is a lack of foresight on the part of microsoft not to think about this, after all this is a great business tool, so the need for decent IMAP checking of sent-items is essential when you are "on the move"
Come on everyone, lets all complain to microsoft to fix this, It seems another solution is to use "flex mail" which has the ability to use a memory card as storage. I'll let everyone know my findings on wether it is a better solution than the built in email pocket outlook client.

I just tried Flexmail... doesnt work...
I sent the following email to the developers to gain a bit of interest (hopefully)

Hardware: jasjar / xda exec - WM5
Version: 2.2
Mail Server Name: own webserver with IMAP support
Connection Used: GPRS
Protocols Used: IMAP
SMS Integration: on
Type of Issue: IMAP Synchronization
Beta version Used:
Issue:
Hi there, I installed your software to hopefully get around the problem where all pocket PC's do not allow access to the "sent items" folder from the device. As I wish to use this device for business it is vital that I can see what email's I have sent from either my desktop PC (running Outlook Express 6) and my xda when out of the office.
Your program seems to work fine (the trial version) but the sent items does not seem to be on the server, but locally stored, which again negates the whole point of imap.
On the Flexmail program, a folder called "Sent" exists which is not on the server. So I see no way of actually using your program to achieve what I need it for!!!
If you plan on fixing this in the next release please let me know asap... as a lot of people on xda-developers.com are scratching their heads in disbelief that microsoft has not fixed such a fundamental bug!

Solved - simple workaround
Yesterday I spent a few hours trying to solve the problem of seeing sent items on an xda and outlook express as well with IMAP.
After much "mucking around" with different email clients, and not to mention finding some that work with WM5, I eventually figured out a workable solution - It involves installing and using flexmail instead of pocket outlook that comes with the pda.
Flexmail runs as a trial demo... to purchase it is $19.95, it also has SMS capability, and after installing and a restart replaces the messaging link on the today screen.
http://www.pocketinformant.com/products_info.php?p_id=mail&dir=wm&tab_id=purchase
There is one extra step involved to make it work, so its not ideal, (see my earlier posting to the software company who make it) but it means you can achieve what you desired and see all emails sent from either the laptop/desktop pc and pda.
I think if you want to try this solution, It might be an idea to make sure you're using a memory card as this program can be configured to save emails to the memory card, which could be useful if you have large email attachment such as a scanned document, which might fill up the internal memory on the phone easily.
While digging around I found a Viking 2GB SD card (£40.26 ex vat)
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=104113
Instructions
1) install and configure flexmail on your xda/pda to access your IMAP server
2) set up an IMAP email account on your PC with a mail client (e.g. Outlook Express 6)
2) make sure synchronise is set on all folders on the PC and the pda
3) for reference - the IMAP "sent folder" on the server is called "Sent Items"
On flexmail, however, it stores any pocket pc outgoing emails in its own "local folder" called "sent". This is not uploaded for some strange reason.
Therefore to view the emails from anywhere, on flexmail, after sending, just open the "sent" folder and then go to the menu, and move the email into the imap folder called 'Sent-Items'.
A send and receive will upload these items, moving them out of the "local folder" and will then enable them to be viewed on any IMAP client - also on the pda from the same folder.
Flexmail also seems to support html email - which is nice! It has lots of configurable options and seems to be a great bit of software.
Obviously there might be some connectivity issues with larger file attachments over GPRS using IMAP. So try and find a 3G spot if you can - or someone's WIFI router for bigger attachments!

HTC Mail HTML yes/no?

Hi, I keep getting mails telling me "I can not receive HTML"
is this true?
Does the Desire have no HTML mail capabilities?
It looks so cool on my Palm Pre, why cant I have it on the Desire ?
HTML works fine. Make sure you have not selected "download text" only under the sync settings.
I assume you have also selected HTML format on your email server
thx, i am talking my gmail account
but where can i find the settings ?
Desire/settings/account&sync for google account only show:
sync calendar
sync contacts
sync gmail
no "donwload text" option
where do i select html format on email server ?
ok, i found the "text only", it comes with the 1kb and 5kb mail size limit settings
But why does the mail not auto-size everything full screen (vert/horz) to include the complete mail ?
Should not be a problem with 600x800 resolution?!
it (rendering) works fine on my palm pre (320x480) and by pinching and clicking one can zoom in/out.
in case of the desire the mail autosizes fine horizontally in landscape mode but not in portrait mode.
one cant have it all i guess ...
Use GoogleMail for Gmail, not HTC Mail.
For all my mail accounts this works, but does anyone know why I can't set this option to view HTML on my Exchange server mail account?
I can see the option, but I can't set it?!
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
html is only supported on exchange 2007 or 2003 with service pack 2.

Exchange only supports HTML email via Activesync in 2007 RTM and above
So if you have a 2003 or older exchange server then HTML no worky.

I wonder why it's not working. Before I used the exact same exchange account on my iPhone 3Gs and HTML was no problem at all. The server is running 2003. Now I'm just not able to change the mode from text-only to full HTML... Seems more like a softwareproblem or limitation which we should be able to work arround some how...
Well Exchange 2003 does not support HTML formatted emails via activesync
It renders them as text only.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996303(EXCHG.80).aspx
You must be mistaken somewhere
The iPhone Exchange solution doesn't use ActiveSync does it? It's more of a workaround using the OWA connection if I remember correctly?
So it's possible that HTML mail is available even with Exchange Server 2003 if you're using an iPhone, but it certainly isn't if you're using an ActiveSync connection.
Might be wrong though, I've never even held an iPhone...
Not 100% TBH but I think Apple licensed EAS.
So they should be using Exchange Activesync.
iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile
I have used the iPhone 3GS, Touch Diamond (WM6.1) and HTC Desire (Android 2.1) all with Exchange ActiveSync (from Exchange Server 2003) and Hotmail and here's what I've found.
iPhone - displays HTML beautifully from both Exchange and Hotmail and syncronises all Exchange folders with any changes on the phone being reflected elsewhere. However, it downloads Hotmail using POP3 so you can only see the Inbox and e-mails sent from the phone and any changes made on the phone are not reflected elsewhere. I believe there is an app that sorts out the Hotmail problem but I haven't tried that.
Windows Mobile - as stated in previous posts Exchange does not support HTML format in "over the air" syncronisations so all you get with Exchange is plain text if using Exchange Server 2003. Hotmail can display HTML and also allows you to sync all folders with any changes on the phone being reflected elsewhere.
HTC Mail on Desire- Handles Exchange Mail like Windows Mobile (plain text) and Hotmail like iPhone (via POP3 so only Inbox and no "proper" sync). In other words it seems to take the worst of both worlds.
What frustrates me is that the technology clearly exists to allow Exchange (using Exchnage Server 2003) to display HTML and to allow Hotmail to Sync properly. If all of these companies got together (some chance) and let the others licence their tecnology then the end user (me!) would be able to own whatever phone they wanted and have Exchange working like it does on the the iPhone and Hotmail working like it does on Windows Mobile.
Maybe one of these days!

Try this:
Forward the emails from the HD2 to another email account, not your main email account, then download them in Outlook.
