Liberty 1.5 by Kejar & Jrummy vs. Apex 1.4 by Fabulous
For the past 28 or so hours I've had two droid Xs in my possession and decided that I wanted to test the two latest and greatest ROMS for the X. Liberty 1.5 and Apex 1.4. I started out by SBFing both to stock 2.3.340 before doing anything and loading fresh installs of both.
1st thoughts - Without loading any accounts or applications, both are very quick roms, tool boxes on both are loaded full of options. for the sake of comparison I didn't load any toolbox options on either. Both phones were charged to 100% and then taken off.
Setup- I added my google account to both and let the application restore process commence. At the end of the process both were at 90% Battery. I don't have any task killers(bleck) and only have around 20 applications. I then went through the twitter and facebook account process and set up both phones with my GOLauncher setup w/ widgets and wallpaper. So both phones are still 100% mirrors of eachother(beside rom)[no themes]
Playtime- Recently my girlfriend and I have become addicted to the game Dropwords so we both took an X and played for an hour, playing one game after another. Everything was timed with an egg timer lol. After an hours of game play both were at a respectable 70%.
Toolbox- Like mentioned earlier, both have toolboxes with great features. Both make these ROMs a tier above the rest. Functionality and ease I would give to Liberty with the Liberty Toolbox. With the ability to simply click a button to add themes, blur apps, overclocking etc its much easier then reading font on the Emulator. The apex tool box also has great commands and isn't hard to use at all. Fabulous did a great job with the ApexBox.
Battery Life- There is a "patch" for Liberty that seems to improve the battery greatly, but it was not used in this test as it was not part of the original 1.5 release. I did the same things I both phones from the time I set both up to the time I went to sleep that nite. Didn't post anything on twitter or facebook, searched the same sites on both (gizmodo, phandroid, yahoo, d-life) In the time I started searching sites on both phones to the time I finished, Apex was 10% ahead of Liberty 60% - 50%. After another hour of dropword on both phones, we had Apex on 50% and Liberty on 40%.
ROMs- In terms of sheer performance, before I loaded GoLauncher and applications, Liberty it seemed held a speed advantage in terms of Applications opening and Boot time. Apex seemed to be faster in opening the settings menus and the market seemed to open faster too. After launchers and applications were loaded Liberty still held a slight advantage in applications. Apex however, didn't seem to like GoLauncher at first but got better after I reinstalled it.
The Final word- Both Roms are excellent, both are fast, both are loaded with customization options. Both are ahead of the rest IMO and thoroughly put Motorola's stock software to shame. Personally I can't really find a weakness in either, and both really give the user plenty of options. Battery life seems to be a bit better on Apex as people have discovered but with the tweak made by Kejar it might level the playing field. With all roms theres bound to be bugs and both seem to have been really streamlined into the smooth creatures we see now. Throughout the entire testing process I only had one hiccup that recurred twice. Both instances were with Apex and a strange keyboard action. I tried typing things on both and twice on apex letters did not process when hit.
hope you enjoyed my comparison =] If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
note: There was a rumor of malicious code in Liberty 1.5 which was causing several people restoring backups of Liberty 1.5 to have issues. Jrummy and Kejar have both cleared this up and it was not malicious, it was more of a show and tell that wasn't cleaned up properly.
Nice comparison, I'm sure this will help some people out =)
One interesting thing about this.... LIberty is blur free and Apex still has blur components. Supposedly blur is supposed to "slow" the phone down in some ppl's opionion. Thanks for the write-up
I flashed Liberty four days ago...the first and second day I really didn't notice any difference in speed. On the third day when I started using the phone I was blown away I thought something was wrong at first. I've never experienced speed like this before .....does it make any since that I didn't notice right away?

Nice comparison man. Been curious lately as before liberty came out I was a rom junkie switching almost daily. Haven't changed though since liberty. May take a gander at apex now. Thanks.

ran liberty 1.5 for a good while, also ran fission 2.6.1, but so far performance, stability, & battery life go hands down IMHO to APEX1.4.0
the apextoolbox is a fine piece of work. I actually prefer it over a gui tool app.

Thanks for the comparison. I'm still running Liberty 1.0, but am now curious between both.
Liberty is a lot of glitz and glamour, but as for stability, battery usage, and speed, its ApeX 1.4 ftw. Its incredible that even with its blur elements ApeX still runs faster and smoother too IMO.

Thanks for the review....I've been using Liberty 1.5 and like it a lot....My only real issue is strange battery life....some days I'll go all day and have 60-70%, some days I'll run out of battery by 5PM......I am diligent about turning things off (like wi-fi and gps) if I happen to use them and have even started re-booting the phone after I use a battery-hog app..........No real pattern that I can tell.
Still.....just for fun I am thinking of trying APEX.....
Edit. Edit. Edit.
I am planning on installing one of these this weekend and was leaning to Liberty 1.5 until i read this thread. I am thinking that Apex 1.4 now sounds like what I will go to. Does anyone have a good guild (since this will be my first time) to backup my applications, flash to SFB, then to the rom of choice (likely Apex 1.4)?
i've been very happy with liberty until the last 2 days. non stop reboots on 1.5. every time i hang up a call, it reboots. i tried to go back to 1.0, doing the same thing. tried 2 different backups, still doing it. been trying to get some help from the developers to no avail. don't know whats going on. had a good experience back when apex first came out, so installing 1.4 right now. we'll see...
No go on that! Did a full wipe and installed apex 1.4, did ONE modification to it, and it got stuck in a bootloop. NOW i remember why i got rid of apex before i had liberty. did a full sbf flash and am getting ready to put liberty 1.5 back on it. i think that'll probably fix the reboot issues i was having...

ive been reading forums for days, ive rooted and installed bootstrap and made my back up, thx a million for all of your work in guiding me through that btw. my question is, what next? im running 2.2.1 im just wanting to make my phone faster and look at trying out the new themes or whatever i stumble upon. A Couple of guys at work seem to flash a new rom at least once a day. one is on a DINC and the other a Captivate. is the DX really that much more complicated or am i missing a crutial thread somewhere. Stick it out for a few more days until Gingerbread OTA. Better than Froyo ROMs. Then reroot and ROM.
Do NOT take the OTA if you plan on rooting or ROMming... according to P3Droid, you may not be able to do so right away. Look at this:

Well u guys just nailed part of my confusion. I had read about the upcoming release tentative for the friday the 13th but I thought that was last month my bad. So even though I wouldn't be able to root n mod right away it should be a positive improvement over 2.2.1 correct? Undoubtedly the devs will knock it out of the park shortly after its released so I could wait for root again but enjoy an update or attempt it on 2.2 and get a look alike. Think im gonna wait and try to learn all I can in the time being. Thanks again all for your info n big thanks to the devs.
Just coming over to the X from a droid incredible I can promise you the dinc is much easier to play with, and a lot more forgiving. Even with the issues I had on the dinc I'd go back to it in a heartbeat if verizon would do it.

I believe the 596 update he is talking about is the most recent gingerbread leak (4.5.596), which so far is not rootable.
All leak versions of gingerbread 591 and before are rootable and have roms in progress. Notably Apex 2.0 beta and Liberty GB v.5 (remember these are works in progess, and still need some refinement)

Since I still have nub status on these forums i will give you some direction without direct links. If you just want to theme, then you can install an update.zip through clockwork that will "deodex" apks (this makes them themeable). Then you can install any theme you want that is compatible with your rom/os through clockwork.
droidforums.net (droid x section) pretty much covers most if not all the major custom roms/themes available for the droid x. droidxforums is another great resource.
If youre looking for froyo roms, I would suggest Rubix, Liberty, or Apex.
Rubix: Super Fast and stable.
Liberty: Fast, stable and compatible with Liberty Toolbox (market app)
-Toolbox Features
1. Easy modding/themeing
2. Overclocking
3. One-step download/update to Liberty GB (only available on donate version)
4. Much more i can't even remember
Apex: Didn't use this on froyo, but i've heard nothing but good things about it. I only mention this one because i love apex for GB.
For Gingerbread...
Apex 2.0 beta: Runs as smooth as i would expect and feels more complete than Liberty GB v.4. Only issue i've found so for is a force close for battery usage under spare parts app.
Liberty GB: I tried up to v.4, but i think most current is v.5 (both of these are available through liberty toolbox). V.4 was really cool and the toolbox was partially functional, most of the stuff i cared about worked atleast. One thing i hated though was i kept getting a notification for an authentication error with one of my imap email accounts, which completely bugged the hell out of me.
TL;DR;
For you i would suggest the liberty path, since the toolbox makes it easy to theme. Also, if you're comfortable with sbf-ing then i would suggest giving liberty GB a try (if you know how to sbf, you can always get back to stock)
Let me just say that I could literally kill Verizon lol. Ok so I waited for the OTA GB. When it released ta-da I could'nt get it of course because Bootstrap blah blah so on, well came across maderstcok's awsome update zip, ran it via clockwork and bam, phone was back to stock no hassle no headache no prob. (mind you I had been sweating bullets that I would botch something and brick my phone). So now all is back and going, everything I have used provided by the Devs here and at Droid Life worked flawlessly. I am excited at this point, cleared all the cache and did all the resets as per instructed, still everything great. Went to about phone and started pulling the OTA GB. REALLY became excited when yes, it downloaded, yes it started installing and yes, it finished and rebooted my phone. ENTER THE PROBLEM lol. I get this nifty looking red M symbol instead of the Froyo white and black M. Like a kid in a candy store I still was excited, the long awaited update was finally...... wait, whats this, bootloader? I didnt tell it to go to bootloader. Hmm, ok, welp, been sitting here now for 20 minutes better go ahead and restart the phone, yay, same thing. So now heartbroken and a bit ticked off im realizing that i now have an awsome looking rock to carry around.. sbf FTW!!! I followed all the instructions and awsome, back to out of the box state. phone works, makes calls, has 3g, camera works everything good now. I have said all of this to say one thing and ask another.
#1 If we were lucky enough to have the great devs and ppl here working for Verizon, well, this organization of individuals would not even be necessary because these guys seem to do it right the first time. I cannot express my gratitude enough.
#2 Now that its back to out of the box (again) should i attempt the OTA again?
Thx in advance all!

No thats not an option when you run into the problem i had because i could not bring up the recovery menu. Regardless of what i pressed held or tried it went straight to boot loader.
I thought that I would give MIUI a go since I have read great things about it. I have been using CM for a very long time now, so I wasn't expecting to be blown away.
Overall I am pretty impressed with a few caveats. The interface is very nice and I especially like how the notifications drop out of the bar up top, like when you get a text message. I don't need to use handcent anymore to say the least. The built in theme manager is cool and overall the think the menus are easier to use then most roms.
Anyways, the main issue is speed and battery. I read great things about speed but I just don't see it. The homescreen lags, apps are slow to open, and things always seem to lock up on me. I didn't restore from titanium backup, I started fresh. I'm running Savaged Zen 2.2 as my kernel, but the speed seems sluggish no matter the kernel.
The battery life isn't as great as it was on CM7 either. I can barely.make it through a day on MIUI.
Any tips for improving performance before I leap back to CM?
I would stay with Miui for a couple of days and I guarantee you that the battery life will get better, also I would try using tiamat, or godmode kernel they are great.

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Download kernel.
Put into root directory of sd card.
Boot into recovery
Nand backup (because you never know)
Wipe cache and dalvik cache
Flash kernel
Reboot
Evo HW 003
MIUI 1.5.27 with Tiamat 4.0.3 sbc
Cut Corners theme
Miui is awesome but the lag just kills me. I've tried every kernel out there and nothing changed lol.

Just flashed miui last night, wanted to see what it was all about. Took me a lil bit to get everything set up but now it's running smooth for me. Lovin it except battery life is killing me, unplugged it just 15 min ago and it dropped 30 percent. Ill probably run this for a week or two then nand back over to synergy or kingdom. Overall though I love the menus of this rom and all the different settings.
Battery dropped another 8 percent in the time it took me to type this.

Try using setcpu with the tiamat 4.0.5 kernel. Maybe your cpu is constantly pegged at its highest frequency so its killing the battery. With set CPU installed I had my Max at 1113 and min at 384 running smartass; I easily got 24 hours with moderate usage. Also download spareparts from the market and make sure your end button has the phone set to sleep.
Here's the free setcpu for xda users.

I've used many kernals (mostly CM and MIUI) as they tend to have the least amount of clutter.
I've been very happy with MIUI (been on it for over 5 months) when I used to flash a new rom almost daily.
I've found MIUI (more than any other rom) has "finiky" issues with installs.
If you've not done it, I'd recommend doing a complete wipe using Caulkin Format All and Format Temp, fresh install of miui (reboot 3 times after you install it, helps get rid of some fo the chinese crap), flash a kernal of your choice (i've been rocking tiamit 4.0.5 sbc) and then configure your phone and set it all up.
I love the fact that you can have folders on your home screen (that show the icons of the content) however, it doesnt hide your status bar (I think it's stupid to have the clock show twice).
I use launcher pro and folder organizer ( available on market) and love it.
I have a very minimalistic layout with everything grouped neatly.
if you've not used MIUI, try it! Stiff is amazing!

Tiamat 4.0.4 is the best i have used on MIUI. Savage have never been smooth for me. Overclock to 1152 and it rocks.

Everything seems to work just fine for me with the latest update. I haven't tried Navigation, but my GPS locks almost instantly, so I suppose it would work just fine. It seems like GPS is the biggest problem.
I still have the bug where the automatic brightness doesn't work correctly. I have just set the brightness somewhere and forgot about it. It seems to work correctly for others though. Guess it might have something to do with the kernel though.

Another easy way is to use Kernel Manager from the Market. He has all the most popular kernels listed there. It is a breeze.
try tiamat kernel 3.3.7 which seems to work the best for most people or try the latest one which is 4.0.5. I'm using the latest one with vipermod which is a tool to lower voltages and it's great.
which is the least memory consuming? Can anyone who has flashed a ICS ROM post a Screenshot of their mem currently used in Settings? Or with any app...
Of course post the ROM you are currently running as well.
Also what you feel are the PROs and CONs of your chosen ICS ROM.
Any other information you feel is relivant is welcomed.

Me too +1 here, its super fast, faster than ipad2 , and has whole lot of fun features now hope to see a stable version to play all the games
Here's mine just as a point of comparison. I'm running Thor's v96.
I have the face lock settings. But i am NOT using it. I set it up the flashed the acer ring. I like the lock screen ring over the face lock.. I hardly ever lock my tablet. I Think for the most part ics is great. the browsers are much lacking CHROME Will often end up dead at a black screen with more then a few tabs open with text tearing. Stock browers has artifacts and some tearing with the same text issues as chrome.. I think the issue is that acer does not have hardware acceleration tweaked correctly. if at all for applications. it seems the browsers are lagging not the os. as in the past it seemed to me it was android.

You are both correct. it only works. WELL KINDA WORKS.. do not get me wrong ITS MAD FAST Compared to stock honeycomb browser. But for me it seems to give me a black screen just at the MOST WRONG TIME EVER. GRRRRRRR. yes frustrating. The stock browser in my opinion is more stable then chrome.but this is from 2-3 days using ICS. it could change.

Good words for the thread! I am aware of Androids operating techniques. I am looking for the rom that from boot runs on the least ram. With no apps going except required apps. Thus leaving more RAM for all of your other desires We are well aware(most) that we have a dual core tegra 2 tab with limitations since tegra 3 is about to drop into stores everywhere... we still have a powerful device and anyway I can free up some space from the start, I will take I like minimalist roms... as well as fully loaded. ICS is proving to be troublesome for random people and I want to be one of the ones that says, "Oh... no SOD here. Just smooooooth butter."

This is totally true . The screen shot i provided was Right after flashing the rom NO Email accounts set up. or nothing.
Android Os lets things sit in memory but sorta static it shows them taking up valuable ram. This allows them to use less cpu cycles to wake up PREVENTING Ram and cpu spikes. Thus using less resources and battery consumption. Yes i nknow techie guys this is not totally exact explanation but its a quick and easy one. With the basic concept.
I will add the above is the reason why task managers that Auto kill aggressively will fight with the android built in memory management. Thou they are good for trouble shooting apps that are rogue.
Sorry if this turned off topic just my screen shot being a fresh install was not totally accurate now im averaging 301 to 320s and it looks to be the average .

Interesting knowledge.
I'm probably not alone in watching this thread with interest...I'm looking forward to ICS, while admittedly happy with 3.2.1. I'm looking less at memory use than I am at stability; since moving to the almost-stock-yet-rooted Honeycomb, I've had close to zero problems I didn't create for myself.
For me, changing ROMs (I often wonder how the OS image got the nickname ROM, which means read-only and implies flashing to EEPROM to old guys like me) is something of a PITA, since there's much about stock Android I rip out by the roots (including Market, BTW, so everything on my tablet is sideloaded), which makes me want to do it once and get to the most stable. So for those of you brave enough to leap into ICS before us, keep posting those reports!

I currently am running Icylicious 4.0.3, works awesome. Really a lot faster then before, I was starting to get frustrated with the lag in between pages... but it's better now! Love the rom, nothing's really wrong with it. Fixed dhcp drop as well as a weird problem I was having with my headphone jack when I'd plug my headphones in (had honeyvillain kernel before.) But yeah works great now! No face-unlock that I could find, but didn't really want it anyway.
Here's mine.

This will be a thread where people can give feedback on my rom for the KF. I was requested to create this because some people can not post in the development section yet. Please give positive feedback as well as constructive criticism in this thread. Also, you can make requests for features. Thank you guys for all of the support and I hope that everyone can express their opinion about CM9 Reloaded on the KF.
Cheers, everyone!

Just wanted to say thank you. I loaded this ROM this weekend and have really enjoyed using it. Once the kernel issues are resolved, I can definitely see this being y daily use ROM.
ROM KF
Hello, I'm using this rom since several days ago and I really like, the only problem is I can not play videos from youtube, for everything else very well.
good speed
the touch screen works perfect
I think it's the best ROM created for the KF, I hope you continue like this.
Thank you.
Wanted to say thanks for all your hard work on this ROM. I've been following your thread in dev but can't post there yet.
I'd definitely suggest anyone with sod problems underclock following lovejoy777's suggestions; doing so has really improved stability for me (though cpu intensive tasks such as games tend to crash now)
I'd agree with those saying it would be best not to include launchers since you can't uninstall them. I'm using apex myself.
If anyone is interested, Swype works great on here. Would have been, almost a deal breaker for me if it didn't
Do you mind if we ask questions in this thread that haven't been addressed in your dev thread, or would that be best served by a new thread?

Any one got Swype working on this ?
mine says something like "screen resolution NOT suported"
by the way your ROM is AWSOME! keep up the good work
I can't remember if you already said it or not, but will you be including the reflective blue soft keys with 1.2, or will you leave it stock? Thanks for the hard work, great ROM

The ROM is beautiful and works very well. Some times the kindle will freeze up and restart, but thats okay. The only thing is adobe flash doesn't work., which results in not being able to watch videos. Even if I download flash from the market it still wont work. That just might be my deal breaker. good work on the rom, though.
EDIT: the flash works but the frequent freeze ups r still a problem

Thanks for a great ROM, I loaded it last night and although it works pretty good, I am getting frequent freeze-ups. Haven't changed the CPU governor yet, to see if that changes anything.
Suggestions?

600 min 12000 Max governor on demand for both wake and sleep. Remember that all kindles handle over clocking differently and these settings may not be perfect for you since you may have a different amount of wear down on certain components such as the thermal protection substance etc. These settings seem to work for about 80 percent of the users with this rom. Some can over clock to 1.3 without freezes or reboot but some just can handle it. This setting again work for about 80% of the users I see using this rom.
Hope this helps

programs freeze and apps disappear after reboot
I love this from and have a hard time imagining messing with any others. I only have a few questions... after installing apps and its not one in particular, I will notice that while running some apps it will freeze and I have to reboot. After reboot several apps will no longer work. The icon will still be on my homepage but not n my app drawer. When I click them it will say app isn't installed. Has anyone found this problem? If so, how did you fix it?
ROM quirks, praise
I'm noticing that high-end games are troublesome. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, for one. It just doesn't seem to work. When I use "Hide My Root", Dead Space works, but it's very crashy, and it disappears upon reboot.
That said, I DO love this ROM. It's the most fluid experience of ICS yet. Thanks, dev!
I can't post in the Development Forum yet, but I wanted to say thank you for this ROM. I was occasionally getting the SOD, but I've found turning off wifi if I'm leaving the Kindle for extended lengths of time has eliminated that issue completely.
Freezes up way too much. Went back to stock.

New developer, working on my own custom rom
I have been using this Rom for a week now and have not had one single issue. OC to 13 stays at 13 not resetting,no SoD, no lag,no nothing. Not had any of the problems others have mentioned. Fast , smooth ,looks great. Followed the step by step instructions.I used Twrp to install Rom and gapps. Fantastic job.

Thanks everyone. I hope that in the future this from can become even more stable.

I'll be happy to give it another shot when 1.2 is officially released. I just had continuous freeze ups and SOD everytime I sent it to sleep.
With that said, I am very appreciative of the effort you guys as devs are putting in, and am confident that once the kernel issues are sorted we will have a great little ICS running Fire.
Great Job
Just wanted to echo the other comments and say how great this ROM is. Been running it for only a day, but no issues and vastly superior to stock.
My only issue is the same one Mao_anguita had with Swype saying it has an unsupported resolution. Probably a Swype problem but I'll keep looking at it.
Thanks again for a great job!
I'm looking for opinions on about three different ROM's for my girlfriend. And I'm only posting this in a new thread because most the other ones I see are 2 years old and therefore highly outdated.
TN Elousions 2, the Team No Name ROM, and Thundershock.
Now, she wants to have a UI fairly close to stock. We tried one with ICS and she hated it. Maybe it was the ROM. I'm not sure. It was all blue and white menus and she said it was difficult to navigate. We went back to stock.
Anyway, she is having constant problems with her phone with reboots, apps not working properly, battery life, etc. She wants to switch to an iFail errr iPhone and I'm trying to convince her that Android is the place to be.
She uses the GPS function on her phone for navigation a lot, so GPS MUST work... She uses other apps such as pinterest, facebook, fitness pal, etc... But GPS is the main thing we need..
So I'm looking for opinions on those three roms or even any others that are stable enough and fast enough to show her that an Android can be improved even when it's 2 years old and counting.

MikG 3.11 offers a UI very close to the stock Sprint ROM but also permits quite a bit of user customization. GPS performance on this ROM is solid. Unfortunately, there has not been any development on this ROM since March 2012; but the ROM is solid. You can download MikG 3.11 at http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?10338-MikG-v3-11-3-9-2012 (be sure to get the Full Wipe version).
I also recommend uding ca1ne's Classic Sense Kernel with SBC for improved battry perfomance. You can download the kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557248 (be sure to get the SBC version).
Be sure to perform a nandroid backup and wipe the cache, Dalvik cache, and system before flashing the ROM. You can flash the kernel as soon as the ROM flash is completed.

Man if you had that in purple I would be all set (she's a huge fan of purple, not so much on pink)! I'll have to show her and see what she thinks...
I think there is if I'm not mistaken

Well if you choose a sense 3.0 there is a nice purple skin I can hook you up with. As nice as tnn roms are I would not suggest it being it is far from stock style. Yet if she is thinking Icrap then it does have that kind of UI.

I have been using Thundershock for about 2 weeks now with very few issues, gps works great (used it quite a bit) .You can always change appearance by using launchers, I use go launcher
I was using InFaMoUs 2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836346) for a while and really liked it. It had a very stock feel to it. I felt like my phone performed faster under most conditions using that rom. The only thing I didnt like about the rom was that i was constantly getting low memory notifications. I think that the sense roms take up a little more space, but i think the real culprit was one of the games that i installed was growing in size every day untill it took up all the room i had left on the phone.
