Android & Netflix... This is exciting! - Streak 5 General

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-14/netflix-shares-jump-on-news-of-android-streaming.html
I'm excited!
Qualcomm, based in San Diego, said Monday that devices running its Snapdragon platform and Google Inc.'s Android software will be able to stream Netflix's movies and television shows
Of course, no time frame!

I can currently stream Netflix, hulu, and many more using playon media server.

Cool information! I was wondering about that... I plan on using my Streak as a wifi tablet until I feel comfortable in the ecosystem. I actually really love being able to stream Netflix over my iphone and would even more excited to stream movies over a 5" screen!

If you read qualcomm's press release, it says "...that future Android devices powered by the Snapdragon™ platform will have access to instant streaming of TV shows and movies from Netflix." because of necessary DRM libraries.
But being the DRM can be implemented via software, I think there is a pretty high chance of it getting modified to run on other devices.

Can you elaborate on that? Is this a paid service? I googled them and found something, but I wanted to be sure.

No u pay 39.99 for the playon media app for u r PC. You must already have a Netflix account separatly to stream Netflix. What playon essentially lets you stream anything on ur PC and other channels that come with the playon subscription. There is no native android app for Netflix. So playon gets u Netflix by using ur media server. It works great well worth the money.

Heads up - Skype is here.

Verizon let go of the deathgrip they had on Sykpe! Free for anyone now!
Android > iPhone. This is a HUGE deal.
Woot that's awesome
No video chat yet.

And you can only do voice chat over WiFi (in the US). Most of the time, that's what I'd be using Skype for, but not always.

Huh? iPhone has had Skype for a long time now. The Verizon deal was only with Android and Blackberry (?).
Pretty useless to me without video chat... thats the only thing I use it for.

Yeah, it most likely will be hacked. It's still sad they don't support it officially.

Yeah.. if you're forced to use WiFi, you probably have a computer around to video chat anyway. Right now this app is pretty useless. Come on Google.. release mobile Gmail video chat already.
I dont get why they wont just add video to gtalk... that'd make EVERYTHING a ton simpler for all of us.

What do you mean? I used Fring to video chat with 2 different iPhone 4 users this past weekend. What death-grip on Fring are you referring to?

What's the percentage of people with phones that have front facing cam? Now what's the percentage of people with a desktop/laptop that has a web cam? There's your answer.
I'm hearing rumblings that Skype for mobile is STILL exclusive to Verizon. They get 3G/WiFi Skype, the rest of us get WiFi.
Yeah its useless thats the point of Skype video chat

if you can put up with the low quality Qik has a desktop client now, Mochiva is also pretty low quality but they have a desktop client, it really is a pain to not have skype going, they announced some new feature that allows a HUGE amount of multicam chat, i forget the number i think they claim 30? anyways its crazy, i know a few programs have multiple cam chat but ive always stuck with skype
Maybe I am missing something?
For those saying Skype only works over WiFi, am I missing something? This is a direct quote from the Skype App "Free* Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G or WiFi"
I haven't tried making a call yet on 3G so are you saying that its not supported on the EVO over 3G? It does say its not supported on the Samsung Galaxy S, but no where says anything about EVO.
I must be doing it wrong. I downloaded Skype from Android Market, and installed it, but it won't let me sign in.

It sucks its just WiFi. I am using the Skype Beta Lite that allows to use on 3G.

Anyway to watch MLB playoffs on evo?

Is there anyway I can watch the giants vs phillies game tonight on my evo? Not to mention I'm going to miss UFC 121 tonight .
Mlb at bat in the market. You can stream live.

If you were rooting for the Phillies I'd give you the answer but based on your location it looks like you are on the dark side.
Actually, I have a slingbox so I can watch anything as long as I have 3G or WiFi.
I know how but it streams in Spanish!!
why dont you just stream the site from the browser? evo plays flash just fine
the app does stream live. you can also find the app for free online. and no i won't say where but it is not hard to find. google is your friend.
Gq wangsta? Simpish
At Bat streams now? It must have recently changed. The Android version did not stream throughout the entire season, but the Apple version did have live streaming.
EDIT: Ah, I see version 2.0 allows for the Postseason.TV streams. Makes sense since it was an extra $10 for the Postseason.TV subscription.

Anybody know how to watch itunes movies on an android? It seems the only way is to pay for a DRM removal but it seems so unfair that I cannot watch movies that I paid for on my device!
but this looks good, great find soloxp!!!

That's why I don't use iTunes. $10+ for a movie you can only use on certain devices, vs $2 or so for the used DVD from Amazon or wherever... The price is just a minor issue, but the fact that they control how you can use your purchase is ridiculous IMHO.

I totally agree, but really this is iTunes issue, not Android issue. DRM is evil - Apple should be the one taking these complaints

Thats correct. You are paying to rent them.
The UI seems nice. I've been using Handbrake on Ubuntu and Windows (and OS X when I had a Mac) (converting to mp4, not mpv).
I'll check this one out next time I'm on that side of the hard drive.

Yea, I know. I don't often buy movies as renting is good but I was given a voucher. It is sad when you you realise that, as the previous poster said, you are just rentig your purchase. There should be some law against this.

Just downloaded netflix and it works

http://www.mediafire.com/?k0iwa8c4tvaxr9s
Just downloaded the file onto my external then used the myfiles to open and install. Works like a charm.
Define "works." Works as in you're able to sign-in to your Netflix account, purchase movies, and then watch them? Netflix has always worked on various phones but no one using an APK version has ever been able to connect to the Netflix servers and actually do anything. It'll be great if it does in fact work on the SGS2.

Stream all netflix content just like on iphone and WP7.
I have been waiting for this for years.
Works like a charm...loving my GS2 more and more each day!
Confirmed working.
Well, holy crap. I'm guessing whatever bizarre DRM requirements Netflix is demanding are built in to the SGS2 already in preparation for inclusion of Netflix on carrier-branded phones. More bragging rights
Works for me as well!
Here's a quick video I did of the Netflix app working on the SGS II.

Hi,
Yep, that's me. Still run misticriver.net although as you can imagine, there is no market for iriver now and PMP's are a thing of the past. Loving the SGS II. Also managed to snag a Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Google I/O so looking forward to playing with that a bit.
Jeff
I did the same, thanks for the tip OP, I was planning on canceling my netflix this month because I couldn't watch it on my phone
